Wiki is pretty amazing, but the source articles are really where it's at.

What is also important to remember is that there is a difference between Smash and the experiments carried out that showed the effect. In the experiments, generally what happens is that people take a test and then are asked to rate how they did on the test, without knowing their results. In Smash (and other games), you basically get the results back instantly when you lose. So it's not directly comparable, but I think a similar principle may apply, because when people judge themselves in things like Smash, they still are drawing on what they remember about their successes/failures in the game and digesting all that into a notion of 'how good.' So I wonder if unskilled people tend to have a more selective memory about their successes/failures compared to skilled people (or vice versa). And of course it's important to remember that these effects are statistical observations, not universals.

But I think the take-away message, like I mentioned earlier, is that the key thing is recognizing one's mistakes and being willing to scrutinize them; someone can be roadblocked either by their inability to recognize a mistake or by some psychological barrier or defense mechanism that causes them to avoid looking at it as a 'mistake.' I have a suspicion that the second is more prevalent and more dangerous. I still have trouble with it sometimes. Turns out that smart people (excuse the candor) are good at justifying things that they came to believe for non-smart reasons.

I don't think I have special talents that got me to the top. I just want is as bad as Rock Lee (thas ma niccuh) so I do whatever I have to to reach the top.

I think sure some of those little kids want it extremely bad and all that and work hard, but I think the top 1-3 just work harder or in a more efficient way.

I don't think I'm as good as I am because of some extra benefit I have from birth, it's more my mindset, dedication, and how I approach this wonderful game.
that's a benefit in itself

people underestimate just how far hard work can take you. that being said quality of practice matters as well

these last 2 pages were a good read, ty much for it, it's motivated me to improve

thanks L, but yeah, kage has a better record. but can you imagine if i didn't live in merced for the past three years and lived in san francisco, san jose, or any other smash populated areas instead. i think my record would match kage's if i lived in a more competitive/smash dense place.

@alan: lol?

i hope everyone has similar taste as you do jr. haha

i guess so alan. just a thought, but smashers should care a lot about their appearance, and for the love of God shower before arriving at the tournament, in order to defy conventional stereotypes. unfortunately some people weren't born as lucky as you. (no homo).

I never said that.

Edit: and Mccain, should I really be taking appearance advice from you? Its clear you dont like Kage simply because hes not 16/has facial hair/his voice doesnt crack.

Bizzarro Flame talking about region is legit. Fun fact: Kage's region is pretty crappy for activity too. Vwins, Bam, PKM, and Chesterr01 (back in the day) all have severe inactivity johns sporadically. I doubt their area is significantly more active than yours. My understanding is that Kage mostly trains with no-names except before big tournaments.

I mean, I'm not gonna dispute that you'd probably pull great results if you traveled or lived in a better place. But Kage doesn't live in the Smash Mecca or anything. Far from it.

Alan and MacD: I need to see Bizzarro before I can objectify him.
