How would you feel if there's a Smash game that only allows one character per franchise?
by u/Infraredtoa7 in smashbros

Stolen from reddit but here's a thought experiment:

How would ya'll feel if there's a Smash game that only allows one character per franchise? To go even further any newcomers to the game can only come from new franchises and would be the ONLY rep of that franchise.

Thoughts?
HUGE PASS. Literally takes one of issues I had with character picks and exacerbates even further. You know this route is just going to be dominated by protagonists and them alone hurts the variety( one of reasons why Sakurai put PP in) and honestly it just limits the game. There's nothing wrong with some ground rules like limit it to gaming or even Nintendo but this too much. If your favourites aren't the main or the most popular protags i.e Shadow, Octolings, Black Mage, Waluigi, Bandana Dee etc you are basically screwed.

Not mention the franchises that need rep most such as Kirby, Zelda, Pac-Man, Sonic are being set back from the slow progress they made or are stagnant even further.

I would not be a fan of this decision

Eeeeww. Talk about stinky! I would hate this. I accept that roster cuts are likely to happen next game, and I'll likely lose some favorites (peep my signature for them) but at least most of them have a good likelihood of returning. This would leave me with like, 3, in addition to removing my favorite kind of character: villain. Kazuya would be the only kinda-one, and I dislike trying to learn and use command inputs so much that I wouldn't play him. Additionally, it'd deconfirm Eggman, Gruntilda, and Geno from the entire newcomer cycle, both base game and DLC. Those are my three most wanteds! Game would somehow have to be an absolute masterpiece for me to justify getting it, cuz otherwise, that's a big fat nope from me! It is fortunate that a roster cut to this extent isn't likely to happen.

As for Ganon, I kinda wouldn't hold my breath tbh. He needs them absolutely, but I feel like he's a K.Rool situation, where their internal data said he was doing 'fine' by looking at their online statistics.
Thing about that is, K Rool has been buffed significantly. Like Ganondorf, K Rool was awful, and would be a contender for worst character in the game had they not buffed him, like, four times. He went from unplayably bad, to finally feeling so good to play. I really wish I could say the same about Ganondorf, which makes it all the more tragic that he's gotten nothing but an Up B lag reduction.

I think I didn't explain myself correctly.

Back when the game launched, I remember an outcry of casual fans calling K.Rool overpowered, to the point that Sakurai actually made a statement that K.Rool was actually under-preforming by their own internal metrics.

It would not surprise me if the team saw Ganon's online performance as just an absolute noob stomper and said "Eh, he's fine".

I think Nintendo is just, alien in regards to how they balance things. Like, most companies nowadays will continue balancing a game for years upon years, whereas Nintendo? "Eh, we're done with it now, finish up and move along."

I don’t know if you guys have heard the rumor that they might be announcing a remake of Chrono Cross soon but that gives me a bit of hope for one of my top two most wanted characters. Chrono Cross was my first ever JRPG I really got into and it made me a huge fan of the genre. I later went back to play older games I missed out on like Chrono Trigger which, in many ways, was even better.

As for my character, I know it’s an extreme long shot, and if any Chrono character made it in it would very likely be Crono himself but Magus does have the distinction of being the only character who was planned to be playable in both Trigger and Cross. I know he eventually became Guile and they cut all connections with Magus but it is still a good sign they had more plans for the character. Who knows, maybe they’ll go back to making the character actually Magus in the remake.

Speaking of JRPGs, I had recently finished FF7 yesterday night. The Original Version of Switch. I would say that Smash have influenced my choices a bit.
Despite the slow start, the janky minigames and lot of backtracking at the second part, it really was a great game. I can really see how it wasbeloved game in the community. The story was fun to go through, the battle system I disliked at the first but came around to appreciate it. It makes grinding fun. The characters were great seeing them grow as people and as team of unlikely and great designs as well.

It also the only game have beaten this year.

Well, off to beat the World of Light for the second time. Such an underrated mode.

Yeah, FFVII was great and probably has the coolest cast of characters in the series. Sephiroth and Vincent are particularly awesome. I’d say it’s my third favorite FF game behind IX and X but all three are amazing.

The final boss with Sephiroth was pretty epic. I did try to get Vincent but that puzzle is just really tedious which is a shame as his design looks sick.

Also Barret's design is also great. A adoptive father with a gun for an arm is pretty based

Yeah, that’s really weird to me too. I’m not complaining since I love both Trigger and Cross and I actually played Cross first. Hopefully (assuming it is true), if it sells well, we can get a remake of Trigger too. Either that or they somehow tie the two together and remake both in the same package.

6 was great too but I could never get the hang of Sabin’s limit break. It might be because I played it on the PS1 port but I had to have a friend beat one of the first bosses that require you to use it. The rest of the game, I had no issues and it was a lot of fun. My Setzer was really overpowered by the time I got to the last boss and he was out damaging the rest of my team combined.

It's basically Street Fighter motions. (one of Sabin's first Blitzes is the Hadoken motion) Plus, it let you do stuff like this:

Yeah, I’m not sure it’s because of the PS1 port or just me being bad but it was never really clear to me exactly when to input the command during that boss fight. It’s been many years since I played it so maybe I could figure it out if I did it again. I’ve successfully done it a few times throughout the game but couldn’t when it was mandatory to proceed.

This year for Thanksgiving I was thankful that people have finally ****ing started to use the term "platform fighter" more colloquially.

Soooooo good to get further away from that bull**** "party game" descriptor especially since it's the completely wrong genre anyways.

What do people think of this?

I'm not really an RPG fan but I do think Smash would make a good RPG.

Though if there had to be particular main character in the game, I'd probably go with Nester.

If they were main characters, I think the miis would be best fit.

And the gameplay and world would be like Kingdom Hearts instead of the traditional turn based.

one problem with the ports was horrible lag but you mentioned the boss battleand there is indeed a battle where even you know aura bolt which is a quarter circle forward you have to hit him with pummel which forward back forward. He’s invincible to everything else but goes down instantly with pummel lol. The hardest move to get consistently for me was bum rush which was a full circle input.

:ultsteve::ultalex::ultzombie::ultenderman: are our first blocky characters in smash what other blocky character would you want in smash the most?
there are Tetromino, Space Invader, Cubivore, Qbby and 2nd Minecraft rep
I really want a TETRIS stage but I don’t know how a Tetromino would work as a character. I think I’ll go with Space Invader. Although I imagine you’d have to take a lot of creative liberties with that one as well.

There’s always Stackattacka and Stonjourner for blocky Pokémon reps as well. Stackattacka in particular could make for a really interesting Smash character.

I'd love to see an overall representative of the Atari 2600 games. Like, it's literally just a 2d sprite that changes form freely to become different things. Aside from that, Tetromino would be amazing, Space Invader could be fun, and I love the idea of a sort of composite 8-Bit Mario getting in.

While I'm on the subject of Chrono, I thought it might be a good time to share my ideas for Magus for the next Smash game. I've still got several more characters to share but I'll try to space them out not to flood the board. With that said, here's what I came up with:
1621088152763.png

Magus (Tarcísio Rezende).jpg

Model by Tarcísio Rezende

Who is Magus? (Chrono Trigger spoilers)

Magus is the lord of the Mystics of the Middle Ages. Depicted as an antagonist for a large part of the game, Magus is eventually revealed to be the older version of Janus, the young prince of Zeal in 12,000 BC. After an encounter with Lavos as a child, he had been sent through a time gate to the Middle Ages, where he was adopted by Ozzie of the Mystics and became their leader. After the fall of Zeal, the player can choose to fight Magus or spare him, allowing him to reluctantly join the party. As the second fight is to the death, Magus will be permanently gone after this fight plays out.

Why should Chrono Trigger get a character?

Chrono Trigger is a classic and beloved JRPG from the SNES era. Even though it has not had a game since the PS1, many people look back on it fondly to this day. Despite Chrono Trigger's great fan reception and legacy, it does have competition within its own company from huge series not yet represented like Kingdom Hearts, Tomb Raider, and NieR. Even though I'm also a big fan of Kingdom Hearts, Chrono Trigger will always have a special place in my heart and is one of my favorite games of all time.

Why Magus specifically over Crono?

This one is mostly personal preference. Magus is one of my all time favorite video game characters and I've never been all that interested in silent protagonists like Crono. Magus also has a ton to offer gameplay wise. He would be the only scythe wielder on the roster and even the only character with a dedicated polearm weapon. He also has a huge variety of skills and magic to utilize. I have come around to Crono as well since I think the partner mechanic could be really fun in Smash if properly implemented.

How would Magus play?

Magus fights using a scythe as well as a combination of all magic types, including his own exclusive "Shadow" magic. Contrary to the other characters, he does not learn any dual techs, and accessories must be found to unlock several triple techs. Because of this, Magus would lean more towards being more of a solo character than the protagonist, Crono, who would focus much more heavily on the partner mechanic of Chrono Trigger. Even though he would primarily fight on his own, I do think he would use one of his triple techs, Eternal Darkness or Omega Flare. As for the rest of his moveset, here is a quick rundown on the solo techs Magus can use:

These are Magus' skills in Chrono Trigger:

Lightning II - Magus attacks all enemies with a massive lightning storm
Ice II - Magus attacks all enemies with giant chunks of ice
Fire II - Magus attacks all enemies with a blazing inferno
Dark Bomb - Attacks enemies in range of a circle. Something like a hugely scaled down StarFox bomb item would work well here
Barrier - Boosts all allies' magic defense
Dark Mist - Attacks all enemies with a dark mist. This one could be similar to one of Palutena's custom moves from Smash 4.
Black Hole - Chance to instant kill enemies within a circle
Dark Matter - Magus' ultimate solo tech. This one deals massive shadow elemental damage to all enemies.

Here is a complete Smash moveset for Magus:

What kind of music could Magus bring?

Chrono Trigger is famous for its amazing soundtrack with many standout classics. Here are a few that I would love to see:

Chrono Trigger Main Theme
Battle
Battle with Magus
Corridors of Time
Schala's Theme
Undersea Palace
Black Omen
World Revolution
Frog's Theme
The Final Battle

What would his stage be?

I think a great idea for his stage would be the final battle with Lavos. Throughout the battle, you are transported thoughout every era so it would be a great way to showcase the time travelling aspect to the game.

1621088352750.png

What would Magus' alternate outfits be?

Magus has to options for alternate costumes. The first is the cloak that he wears to disguise himself as he travels back to his own time period. The second, which is a bit more out there is based on Guile from Chrono Cross. As you may know, Guile was originally planned to be Magus in the early stages of Chrono Cross but the idea was scrapped and Guile was made into his own character. I think it would be a fun callback to reference Guile in one of Magus' alternate outfits. As for palate swaps, one idea is to have one based on his sprite with the blue cape rather than the red one in his artwork.

CC - Guile.jpg

What kind of Spirits could he bring?

The most likely scenario here is that Magus would bring over every playable character as a Spirit, including Crono himself as well as other prominent characters such as Schala as well as his generals, Ozzy, Flea, and Slash.

Lol yeah, that's pretty much what I'll be doing. Thanks. I spend a lot of time on these but it's fun to share my ideas. Most of my support threads never really got much attention anyways so I figured this would be a good chance to show these off in case no one saw the thread when it was up.

One thing I'd like to see in the next Smash is more tracks from Mother - specifically, more battle themes. It strikes me as one of the most bizarre omissions in terms of music when you consider some of the bizarre picks made elsewhere, and there's a ton of remix potential with weirder stuff like Battle Against a Weird Opponent or the like. It's truly a little confounding that there's, well, nothing.

I think there may have been some copyright stuff behind that? Not sure

speaking of, next game needs more F-Zero X and GX tracks. ESPECIALLY GX. most of Ultimate’s F-Zero music selection is SNES stuff and remixes

6 is the best FF.
For what it's worth, Chrono Trigger did get an expanded port on the DS, and later Steam. Also, we can't be sure that they're remaking Cross. It's still just a rumor at this point, but I'd imagine it'd simply be getting the HD treatment.

And yes, FF6 is GOAT.

Very nicely done. I’d love an insect character in Smash. Golisopod is my top pick but Scizor is also in my top 5 favorite bug type Pokémon. I love all the detail with the stage and moveset. I did check out the other movesets you posted earlier and they were all impressive as well.

Yeah, but that is just a port from one 16-bit system to another.

I want a Chrono Trigger remake that looks like Dragon Ball FighterZ!

I'd love to see an overall representative of the Atari 2600 games.
Pac-Man: "Am I a joke to you?"

Scizor has no chance now that Kleavor is here!

Also, Bug/Rock. Two types Smash doesn't have yet.

Yeah, but that is just a port from one 16-bit system to another.

I want a Chrono Trigger remake that looks like Dragon Ball FighterZ!

Pac-Man: "Am I a joke to you?"
That would be amazing. Arc System Works makes the best anime styled graphics in my opinion. You almost can’t even tell they’re 3D models in their recent games. I wonder if it would be too much work to keep that quality in a full JRPG rather than a fighting game.

I actually would have loved the FFVII remake to try to replicate the original Nomura character drawings in its graphical style rather than Advent Children style but I’m in the minority on that it seems.

I’m still not sure how to feel about Kleavor to be honest. I really like certain aspects of its design but others just make it look silly. I feel the same way about Obstagoon most modern starter Pokémon. I much prefer Scyther and Scizor but I’m leaning towards liking Kleavor in its own way. I think I’d probably like it better if it was its own separate Pokémon.
