Time for yet another tired discussion point of mine

I know these "how would you change Smash" topics are pretty damn tired, but I mainly wanted to have a discussion about this generally. If you could change anything about Smash Ultimate's DLC, how would you? For me:
  • Add a few DLC characters to the base roster to make it:
    • 70. Piranha Plant
    • 71-72. Pyra / Mythra
    • 73. Bandana Waddle Dee (yes I know this is self-indulgence shut up)
    • 74. Min Min
    • 75. Banjo & Kazooie
  • Fighters Pass Vol. 1
    • 76. Joker (Challenger Pack 1)
    • 77. Hero (Challenger Pack 2)
    • 78. Crash Bandicoot (Challenger Pack 3)
    • 79. Estelle Bright (Challenger Pack 4)
    • Team NEO GEO (Challenger Pack 5)
      • 80. Terry Bogard
      • 81. Iori Yagami
      • 82. Nakoruru
    • 83. Steve (Challenger Pack 6)
  • Fighters Pass Vol. 2
    • 84. Byleth (Challenger Pack 7)
    • 85. Dr. Eggman (Challenger Pack 8)
    • 86. Sephiroth (Challenger Pack 9)
    • 87. Ring Fit Trainee (Challenger Pack 10)
    • 88. Kazuya Mishima (Challenger Pack 11)
    • 89. Sora (Challenger Pack 12)

A Hero scenario doesn't really work here imo
The characters are, well, actual characters with different personalities and they have fairly different builds as well as their own sets of skills that don't entirely work with anyone else.

Jill's acrobatics and dodging can maybe work with Claire but it doesn't really suit the men, Leon is well known for gun-fu, his knife skills and flashy moves like the suplex and roundhouse kick whilst Chris is best known for being a beefcake that can punch things really hard and is more of a military man. Claire doesn't really have a whole lot to herself that she's actually done, she's as basic a survivor you can get at the moment.

Given RE4's status and Leon's sheer popularity, I'd give him the nod above everyone else with Jill not too far behind.
That’s fair, but I still think the Hero situation is feasible if you focus more on the older, fixed-camera style of Resident Evil than 4 and beyond. A lot of the major deviations in characterization that may make the situation not work, such as Jill’s acrobatics and Chris’ boulder-shattering powers, are a product of this era. It’s especially evident with Claire, as she’s been used the least in modern Resident Evil of the series’ original 4 protagonists and, therefore, still has the basic survivalist moveset.

I think it’ll depend on which direction they take the character. If they pull primarily from pre-4 Resident Evil, I think a moveset based around limited mobility, resource management, anda handful of really strong projectiles could be used by multiple characters. If they pull primarily from 4 and onward, the moveset would be based around approaching with projectiles and closing stocks with physical attacks, which would require a more individualized attack animations to a singular character.

I know some may write to me "what are you writing it now after two or three years?", but I am impressed that they brought Piranha Plant as a newcomer to Super Smash Bros Ultimate, but in general I did not expect it like everyone before mentioned it, because the Piranha Plant is an enemy species in the Mario franchise and I generally thought enemies would never put them as newcomers. This was a big surprise then.

It has actually been four years, PP came out in Feb 1, 2019,
I can't believe it's been that long lol.

Can we please stop pretending that Japan cares like, at all about US-based days of mourning based on things that happened two decades ago? There's absolutely no reason they should care lol.

Mario Maker literally released on September 11th and Smash Ultimate released on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. It literally does not matter. Saying otherwise is just...incredibly US-centric.

I wonder if the last Nintendo Direct of 2023 will give us more details and clues about Nintendo's next console and the next Super Smash Bros game as well as the first other games to be released there?

Ooh, that's actually a really good pick. Important to gaming history, but also a good character with a ton of moveset potential.
Yessir! It was legit the first game I said "woah games can look this good?" as I sat down to a COLOR Mac thinking wow these graphics beat the hell outta the nes though they did port it anyway lol. I hated using a keyboard to play and way back then you really couldn't get a Nintendo styles "controller" for computer games but it's definitely an important game and I hope one day we see the Prince of Persia in Smash.

It's cool, for many it's not unlike the Vietnam War, it happened but you just don't feel it like older generations because it was over by the time you were able to think on it. Certainly a day of days.
I was young when it happened, around my early 10s, I believe. No pressure, either way, but I should have remembered it.

Hey, please don't mock me like that, or whatever it is you're doing with that image of my post.
Immortalizing a funny moment. It's not mocking you, it's just the chain from asking the possible holiday in Japan to Swamp's amazingly short and dry "it's 9/11" makes it perfect. A masterpiece.

I see. I thought it was something else, which is why I said "whatever it is you're doing with that image". Still, my bad. Maybe it was because I felt bad for asking that in the first place? Well, no biggie.

But on another note, yeah, I can't see Nintendo caring enough for American events to not announce or air Nintendo Directs on that same day. I mean, it mostly happens with events in Japan, does it not?

Remember that Nintendo Direct being delayed because of an earthquake in Japan in (perhaps) 2018?

Well, yeah but that was something of immediate concern.

We're talking about a 20+-year-old event here, that's quite a long time to be sensitive about.

If you mean the first part of the post I quoted, yeah. I just forgot about that day. I also did not say there was nothing to be sensitive about, I just forgot.

Must have been me anticipating the next Nintendo Direct.

What is everyone here’s favorite character playstyle in Smash? I’ve always really enjoyed the slower, heavy hitters like Ganondorf, Donkey Kong, and Bowser. I’ve mained faster characters like Fox and Pikachu in the past but I can’t seem to get the hang of them these days in the same way I do the powerhouses. Despite really liking the characters, I’ve always kind of struggled playing Lucario, Sheik, Greninja, and Metaknight. I have really been enjoying playing Terry, Kazuya, and Sephiroth as well in Ultimate.

Are there any character styles you feel are underrepresented so far in Smash? Which would you like to see more of and what tweaks would you suggest to help any of these that don’t tend to perform well competitively?

I enjoy playing as Wolf, Sonic and King K. Rool.

Nintendo have announced directs on this date before, notably back in 2017
I have to say good eye there. Good find.

Wolf has a lot of really cool looking moves but I still have a bit of a hard time adjusting to his changes from Brawl. I miss the distance he had with his old forward smash and up special he had back then. Landing his forward special is still challenging. I still try to use him because I like the character and he’s just cool to play as.

I still cant believe they put Joker in the game.

He's the one third party character who sticks out compared to all the others, it still looks kinda weird to see him standing next to the rest of the smash cast. And i love having him here because P5 is one of my favorite games of all time.

I, for one, at really happy both Joker and Piranha Plant made it in. Not only do I enjoy Persona and like several Mario enemies, but it just makes speculation for the future that much more fun and opens up a lot of possibilities we may not have put much thought into before.

I tend to gravitate towards characters who can fight in both close and long-range like Wii Fit Trainer, Palutena, and Robin. I also enjoy more focused zoner characters such as Duck Hunt and Ivysaur.

Ultimate newcomers were kind of hit-or-miss for me. Most DLC characters have been fun but aside from Joker, and Pyra/Mythra, none of them really fit my playstyle.

I don't care about competitive play but a few more grapplers and set-play or trap-focused characters would be fun to see in Smash. I'm also a fan of transforming characters but they're harder to justify than most.

Those first few DLC fighters really set a tone of "Expect the unexpected"

Marth, Ike, Meta Knight, Chrom and Ganondorf.

I'd like to see more uniquely designed kits overall. I think it's time Smash evolve just a bit and make more characters with command inputs. Or in smash tradition everyone gets a qcf button.

As for competitive viability Ganondorf and Little Mac need the most work and then there's several characters who are great, just not as good as the top 20-30, but honestly it's hardly "unfair" because some specialists can really do well in bracket with underdog characters. Even a Ganondorf placed recently lol ... and Peanut is a God with Little Mac.

I suppose it’s hard for me to really know which characters I’m good with. I play Smash all the time and use every character but I pretty much exclusively play against level 7 computers rather than actual people. I’m sure almost everything I do against the AI wouldn’t really translate into matches against other people. There are definitely characters I have more success with against the AI than others. Namely the heavy hitters and characters with strong projectiles like Samus, Sephiroth and Byleth.

Sakurai seems to go for "diferent" types of WTF reps each game, he doesn't double dip for the same concept of WTF character, i think shock value is a part of those character inclusions as well.

G&W: 2D Character
R.O.B: Console accesory
Wii Fit Trainer: Hobby character.
Plant: Generic Enemy

The next WTF rep could be for example:
A very obscure japan-only character like Dion from Marvelous.
A NPC side character from a represented Nintendo series that little to no one requests like Sheldon from Splatoon.
I can't think of more right now.

I think the only one that also sticks out is Bayonetta. Since the other third party characters in smash had something of a "Legacy" factor with their inclusion.

Bayonetta and Joker were just the new guys on the block by comparison when they were added. (Persona wasnt mainstream until 5)

I’m actually a really big fan of Incineroar’s moveset. Which is why I’m already mourning his death :4pacman:

Ah well, K Rool also fits me. And Pyra is surprisingly close to my kinda playstyle, but I can’t use her out of principle.

Yeah, Incineroar is really fun but took some getting used to. I’m a big WWE fan so it’s cool to have a wrestler moveset in Smash. I’d love to see Bugzzy from Kirby join the fight too as another wrestling style character.
