Brawl's aesthetic was a really weird choice even back then, never understood it. I like it a lot but like wow, it is truly bizarre to me it ever happened.


I love how Jigglypuff manages to stay cute meanwhile Kirby looks like some nightmare creature lol

Brawl absolutely went for a more realistic art direction compared to other Smash games, as is evident by things like Mario's overalls having visible denim. It was likely done in an attempt to mimick the art direction of Twilight Princess, which was the style of the time.

I always thought that it was just meant to one-up Melee. Melee also had a more realistic and "darker" aesthetic in comparison to Smash 64, and Brawl is just that taken to the next level.

Remember that's how Brawl's reveal trailer opened, with Mario, Link, Kirby and Pikachu transitioning from their Melee designs into their Brawl ones.

Trying to come with a character for Valve made me realize how fun Chell could be in Smash. I don’t know who here has messed around with Stage Builder but there’s a teleport square you can put in a stage to warp you around. That could be a fun gimmick for the portal gun to make temporary portals that teleport you, enemies, or items from one space to another. Chell isn’t really a character I’ve ever put much thought into before but now I think she could be fun.

Does anyone else think about potential cool matchups for your most wanted characters with characters already in Smash? For example, I think a Bill Rizer or Sarah Kerrigan trailer paired with Samus would be really fun to see since all three took a lot of inspiration from Alien and Predator. Sub-Zero or Scorpion facing off against Ryu would be an awesome trailer for me too.

Embracer Group actually has a lot of solid options. I personally love Raziel (Soul Reaver) and Death (Darksiders) and Borderlands is a ton of fun too. Lara Croft is a gaming icon. If we get CATS, they need to somehow get the rights to the “All Your Base” Newgrounds remix.

I’m on the fence about buying it. I’ve enjoyed every game since Path of Radiance on the GameCube but the art style and ring polishing kind of putting me off on this one. I might still pick it up at some point.

Well Smashboards don't let me upload the pic for some reason so here's what mine have. I remember filling it a few years ago so for fun I'm going to compare what changed or not (I don't remember exactly when I did the original one but it was before Steve release becasue Steve was there). Some characters changed not because I changed my mind and don't want the old character anymore, but because I've been playing way more game than ever so I discovered a bunch of new franchise.

In order for Waluigi to come as a newcomer in future Super Smash Bros games he needs to have his own game series to have moves based off of that, but since he was made by Camelot Software Planning, unlike the other Mario franchise characters created by Nintendo itself I'd say that's kind of impossible.

Well actually, Ubisoft has Rayman as a spirit and Altair as a Mii costume, Koei Tecmo has Fatal Frame characters as an assist trophy and spirits, and Arc System Works has River City/Kunio-kun characters as spirits.

Anyone enjoying Fire Emblem Engage?

I haven't got it yet but plan to get it soon.

From what I've seen around the net, the story and characters are hit-and-miss (allowing myself to overgeneralize, I think people who want a more serious/mature story are finding it cringe or cliché, but people who are okay with a bit of anime silliness are enjoying it).

Lots of people are telling me that the tactics are top-notch so far and among the best in the series, which is great to hear; I am still personally concerned that the Engage mechanics are way too overpowered, but even if that turns out to be the case, the game should still at least be pretty amenable to challenge runs if you want more difficulty.

The social aspects I have also seen varying opinions on. Apparently they are scaled back and streamlined a bit from TH? Some reviewers knocked that as a "step back" from TH, while others are saying it's better and comes with less mandatory chore. I guess it really just depends on how you felt about TH to begin with and where you land in terms of social aspects in FE in general; those are already longtime hot topics within the fandom.

Overall I have high hopes for the game and am excited to get into it.

still it’s early days they may yet grow on me
