This wasn't exactly clear during the development time of Melee. The Rare buyout just happened and Rare was actually trying to claim the rights to Donkey Kong, and if they couldn't, at least their own created Kong characters of which of course Diddy.

The weirdest thing about Melee was the lack of a Diddy trophy, but Dixie and K.Rool where there. This leads me to believe Diddy was probably planned at some point. Another suspicious detail was Event Match 2 where you fight a Giant Donkey Kong and a small Donkey Kong in the red costume. Might have originally been meant to be Diddy. This is of course a theory. But I don't think am far off, as Sakurai also stated with the Diddy reveal in Brawl that his arrival was late. It's illogical that he'd been one of the planned fighters of Smash 64, that means Melee was probably the "right time" for him to join.
Oh, yeah. As big as Diddy was at that point in (modern) DK's lifespan (Not to mention how Dixie got a trophy, yet he DIDN'T?)? I've always been of the belief that Diddy was TOTALLY considered for Melee as a playable character (and was even close enough to the point that he would have had a set of fighter trophies for himself), but Microsoft's buyout of Rare muddied up those plans, as Nintendo (and especially Sakurai and HAL Labs) wasn't all too sure as to whether or not they would retain the rights to Diddy (and everything else that Rare created for the DK series up to that point in time.)

As you've said, a lot of DK's content in Melee was also very odd in regards to single-player content. Namely Adventure Mode and Event Mode, where it legit feels as though the mini-DKs that show up at various points in Melee were meant to be roles filled by Diddy himself.

the microsoft buyout ruining everything, the story of the post-gamecube era

wasn't there plans at some point for either melee or brawl for a diddy/dixie combo fighter? or was that one of those ''sakurai said this'' claims that has literally zero source
Secondhand sources state it was from a 2008 Famitsu interview, but we'll have to wait for SourceGaming to locate it and translate it.

Pretty sure there were leftover character files in Brawl that were named after Dixie Kong, just like with Mewtwo, Roy, Dr. Mario, and Toon Zelda.

One thing I'd like to discuss is potential SoulCalibur representation. SC was the fighting game franchise of my childhood, and while Tekken is all well and good, I would've been over the moon to see a SC rep. So if there was a SC rep, who would you want?

The obvious answer is Nightmare, considering he's pretty much the face of the franchise. He's pretty much the most likely candidate among them. But for bias I'd probably say Talim (she's a fan favorite after all), or even Cassandra for the sake of getting her legendary Ground Pound. I'd also like them to have a mechanic similar to Min Min in that using Down-B cycles between their different weapons. And of course, they'd have Kazuya-style combos as one of their main gimmicks too.
I’d personally love to see either Nightmare or Astaroth in Smash. Soul Calibur has a ton of awesome characters and it’s probably the fighting game series I’ve played the second most after Smash. Nightmare is basically the equivalent to Scorpion as far as being the mascot of the series and has a consistently awesome design where Astaroth has always been my main and would be a really unique character in Smash being a massive axe wielder but I don’t think he has much a chance at all sadly.

I made a realization:
The Marvel universe has different earths, each one with their respective equivalent to their 616 counterparts. These worlds originated in different kinds of media including video games. And if these versions of the characters that came from a game first and foremost, does that mean that they have a chance for Smash. Maybe this was deconfirmed by Mr. Sakurai himself by mentioning Iron Man, but imagine when the "video game content only" rule is finally broken, Marvel decides to make an agreement with the developers by giving an Earth number to the Smash universe when adding their portfolio of heroes and villains.

Probably the most boring type of question but who do you guys want the most to be in the next game?, I mean like the top of all you wishes sinces most people has more than one character they want.

Mine would probably be Dante, Sol is close but Dante it's most likely.
Depends i would love for Game Boy Link (as seen in my Profile Poc) To be Playable with wepons from the Oracle games i mean the switch hook could be used as a side switching Grab! Also the rocs cape, Bomb Arrows (as a little LA Reffrence), the Magical Boomerang and Bombs held Overhead could make the Character pretty unique and obviously he would be the only young link in that game!

But if im talking about New Characters its gotta be Dark Matter from Kirby!
this would be his main form but for certain attacks he would transform into this:

He (or i guess it) is the Coolest realizable kirby Villain IMO I mean after all i doubt they would ever make Void or Zero Playable
Edit also sorry for replying to a older post!

Which joke you guys want me to make, the "Space Channel 5/Comix Zone for Smash" joke, or the "Sega Cinematic Universe" joke?
Okay, Comix Zone is a.....bizarre choice. To me it comes across as a bit of a random lower-tier SEGA game. But it's certainly something you could make a fun movie out of!

Anyway they should make a Dynamite Deka movie and it's basically just Die Hard but they say it's Dynamite Deka

Comix Zone is one that does makes some sense to me; if nothing else the premise and generally presentation is novel even if the gameplay has its issues. It arguably could work better in the form of an animated/live action hybrid film than a video game.

There also is the leftover Data for Dixie in the game, although idk about how much you can pull from that itself. I do know that out of the seven cut characters for Brawl that we know were worked on, Dixie Roy and Mewtwo had the most work done on them.

That's not totally accurate, from what I remember. When it came to the Forbidden Seven, Mewtwo had by far the most leftover data, having (IIRC) sound and announcer files alongside some ported over Melee data. Roy and Doctor Mario were next, having the ported Melee data Mewtwo had but no voice files, and then Dixie Kong, Toon Zelda, Toon Sheik, and pra_mai had basically nothing beyond their name, to the point where pra_mai even being Plusle and Minun is contentious and some people still believe Toon Sheik was meant to be Tetra despite her name explicitly stating otherwise.

I’m going by what source gaming said on their article of definitive unused fighters. They said those three had the most work so idk.

Here lads

Which translates to (using DeepL):

Actually, Diddy Kong was going to pair up with Dixie Kong. I had created a system that would instantly switch between the two by touching them. Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong would instantly switch places by touching them. But there were a lot of difficulties, so we cut the idea early on. I chose Diddy Kong because Diddy Kong was so popular that people wondered why he wasn't in the game. We were able to create an interesting motion system. This is due to the efforts of the motion designer. The way he runs from place to place like a monkey was well expressed. And the part where he throws the banana peel to make the opponent fall down is very cute, don't you think?
The frustration of not being able to freely use the Barrel Jet Panic, the final trick in the game, is recreated from the Barrel Jet controls in "Donkey Kong 64". I guess it's similar to "Bangerin' Bay" (laughs).

Given that Mario could be argued as a spin-off of the Donkey Kong games (and has more characters in all the SSB titles), spin-offs being more prominent than the origin series seems to be a pattern in Smash Bros from the very beginning.

I would scream of rage if Nintendo retcons the little guy from Donkey Kong 1981 as someone that isn't Mario.
And that comes from the people that first said that Cranky Kong was the grandfather in the original Country trilogy, then his father in 64, and go back to the grandfather in latter games.

The Smash bros. roster should be about fair representation, I dont care if thats what nintendo wants to do, but it would be better in my opinion.
Joker does a really bad job at representing the series as a whole, I know hes really not supposed to, but as an SMT fan who has to deal with people who have only played the modern persona games and say stupid things like
"MAINLINE IS TOO HARD, MAINLINE IS TOO EDGY, I DONT WANT TO PLAY THE OLDER GAMES BECAUSE I CANT PRETEND TO DATE LITTLE GIRLS"
I dont really care, Thats my problem with ultimates roster in general, Is that they dont try to represent anything properly at all.
Persona deserves a rep obviously, but mainline deserves one just as much, The SMT series is heavily tied to nintendo since the NES days, Its popular, its undeniably popular, more popular than many things that did get in.
Persona and Mainline have their own strengths, dont act like one is objectively better than the other based solely on popularity.
Joker does an extremely poor job at representing everything anyways, He represents 3 games total. The same three games that the idiotic modern Persona fandom worships.
Where is Persona 1 and 2? Even as a strictly Persona character he does a awful job.
I get that the new ones are more popular, but by doing stuff like this Atlus and Nintendo basically reinforce the idea that only those three games matter, It would be one thing if Joker brought with him good representation but he doesnt.
Thats what makes Joker one of the worst character additions, the way that he says "screw you" to the wider SMT fandom, but reinforces the toxic growth that is the modern persona fandom.
Example: the SMT and Persona series are all about demons, there are tons of very beloved ones
Jack Frost is the greatest of all.
Joker brings with him 1
Which is both a massive innacuracy to Persona gameplay, but also just really poor representation.
I dont give crap what persona fans say, Jack Frost is and will always be the Atlus mascot, If you add an Atlus character and dont Include Jack Frost in any way, you have failed to represent Atlus well.
Persona is a spin off, It will always be a spin off, It deserves in yes, but its stupid to represent the spinoff and not the main series whatsoever.
If 2B got in thats great, but I expect her to at least represent Drakengard in some form or fashion.
What people dont realise is that the popularity gap between Mainline and Persona had shrunk a lot since when Joker got in, Adding a Mainline rep is extremely neccasary!
Adding a second Persona character like Yu, Can not be good representation. Regardless of how well they represent the wider series.
Add Aleph, Flynn, Demifiend, or Nahobino and with that they can represent both series properly, and everyone can be happy.
It should have been Jack Frost in the first place, but now it needs to be a character that represents purely the main series.

(this probably sounds really winey and stupid, im sorry, I get very emotional about things that dont matter)

FTFY.

Huh, I knew Fire Emblem fans like Shin Megami Tensei, but come to think of it, both sets of fans have pretty much the same problems.

Just replace "mainline" with "older games" and you have the casual vs. elitist debate in Fire Emblem exactly.

You're right. It does sound whiny and stupid. It sounds a lot worse too. You're just insulting people for gaming opinions and frankly accusing some people of some horrendous ****.

You don't have to think Persona representstion is good or anything, but please refrain from making posts that read like drunken twitter posts.

There's definitely some people such as my wife who feel Smash has strayed a bit too far. When I asked her what her opinion was on how the roster has evolved since she started playing way back on the GameCube (she didn't have an N64) her response was thus:

"Smash was meant to answer the ages old question: who'd win in a fight? The Metroid Dude or Kid Icarus?"

Though obviously it was a joke I get it. So I started pressing on character choices. We unpacked Pokemon first. Why Trainer? Cause they're the original starters. Why Pikachu? He's the Mario of Pokemon (though she admitted Charizard would work in this role). Why Mewtwo? Or Pichu or Jigglypuff?

As we "justified" each entry it became clear that the real only hangup was that Nintendo's involvement with the character seemed to be more ... Elusive. Steve? Sephiroth? KAZUYA?

Ah. 3rd parties and especially the Ultimate DLC packs were then identified as the true culprits of her sentiment.

The analysis ended and we played Smash. Samus beat Kid Icarus. All was well.

The point I suppose is that indeed some fans of the series have over the years lost some interest in the game's roster due to this perception that Smash has strayed from its original purpose of pitting Nintendo's icons against each other. Indeed it has made an impact not unlike the more intense change Brawl made to the game mechanics coming off Melee.

"Why is it so slow?" Asked my friends when they first played it.

That change, which is still felt to this day by some who literally just kept playing Melee and never bothered with the new games, cost the series some fans. This other issue of roster decisions though spread out over more games has over time also cost some fans.

My take: sucks to be them! I feel they're missing out on the best Smash has to offer. So much has improved since the original game. But I respect that it's not for everyone. For those who prefer Melee's actual combat, cool. For those who prefer a more Nintendo centric roster, cool.

well you can't deny smash has changed from what it was in the first place. though for me it's the characters who make these games and that's why i have mixed feelings on ultimate cause it's got all the characters i love and all the characters i hate. i got burned by both first and third party and got some pretty cool additions as well. so the end result is i'm a bit unsure how to fell about the game. i still play it and i enjoy it but still i feel a certain amount of dread in the build up to each character reveal now.

I do feel that we smash fans get a bit carried away with speculation and overreact to certain things. but then again can anyone help how they feel?

I don't think you ever accused them of wanting to date minors, so you sound better by default...

Eh, I learned to go with the flow a long time ago. A good chunk of my most wanteds were never likely to begin with, so the least I can do is support others in their wants. Heck, I never played Golden Sun, but I'm still willing to help spread the word of Isaac in Smash, for example.

Let's just report and ignore him.
Im a girl if your referring to me.

Also people saying that im accusing Persona fans of being creeps, Is kind of an exageration of what I said, I dont think that, And that wasnt the point I was trying to make, Its also in quotes for a reason, Its paraphrased but I have heard people say that they only play Persona for the dating sim, I should not have worded it that way (it makes it sound way worse than it really is), It was a mistake and I apologize.

Im also not an SMT elitist, I dont hate the Persona games, I accept them as part of the SMT series, and I enjoy some of them, Persona 4 is a modern Persona game, and I like it. (Not to mention 1 and 2 which are good as well).
I just get frustrated by the way the Persona fandom, as well as Atlus, have treated Mainline Fans in the past.
I dont mind if you like Persona but tried Mainline and it want your thing, Thats fine.
But what bothers me is the people who act like Persona is objectively better, or that Mainline is objectively bad because they dont like it.

Like I said I get very emotional very easily, And sometimes I freak out when people disagree with me, thats just a problem with me.
That last post I did was a mistake in general, I should have calmed down before trying to present my case, Instead it makes me sound very angry and accusatory, And I apologize for that.
