I honestly would just like Mario Party Superstars DLC that'd be sizeable enough to turn it into a more legitimate entry into the franchise and I'd even pay for it. On that note though screw Nintendo and their blatantly disrespectful handling of the Mario Party series during the Switch era. A progression for the series is either to A. Mario Party Ultimate or B. Nintendo Party and Nintendo knows it. I don't think they've hitten a wall creatively but rather they're just worried about losing a cash cow by giving their dedicated audience something substantial for a change and if Super Mario Party sales are an indication of anything then they don't have to worry about that. My hope is that half-assed game cost them a decent bit of brand loyalty. I legitimately just bought Superstars while Super was on sale. Couldn't even give that piece of crap game to me for free. A total disservice to the franchise as a whole and the Super Mario Party branding name.

I'd just take a live-service version of a lot of Nintendo titles at this point that you'd still have to pay to get into. I don't even care. It beats annual sequels that basically do nothing and for everything they add they then take content away from the previous titles. There are exceptions like I think Mario Aces is pretty underrated for all the depth it added to that series but where else is there to go with it now? I would have loved more Mario Aces DLC (and I would have paid for it) but it's basically a non-starter while Nintendo is operating on the annual sequel strategy. I think it's a waste of resources too to keep having Camelot (just an example) keep making these same freaking games over and over again instead of just assigning a team to perpetually update one stellar entry for a systems lifecycle. Then when the next system comes out you just pay again to get access to what would essentially be a superpatch instead of a so-called "new game" and look at that all the content is transferred including all your cosmetics. Good. Great. Awesome. I mean it just sucks because with this annual strategy basically nobody cares about Mario spin-offs like they used to. Everybody but the hardcore get bored because they always release in such pitiful states all so that Nintendo can pretend they're doing you a massive favor by finishing their games a year or so later.

Other than that I'd hope for a title and deep dive into BOTW2. Hope they can throw that pre-order up soon.

Maybe Nintendo should just do what HAL does and release those small Mario spin-offs as budget download-only titles.

We seem to be at the point where they need to start showing some actual stuff about BotW2, so I would guess, hopefully not incorrectly, that it would show up in the next Direct. Which already makes that a good Direct. Assuming it's not just another small snippit without a title.

And there's a lot of smoke about the Prime 1 remake/remaster, so... that will probably be in the Direct too. And they can't reasonably talk about an unannounced Prime game without at least acknowledging Prime 4. Now of course that doesn't mean we'd see anything from it... but it's not outside the realm of possibility that we would.

And just having those two games in a Direct would make it pretty great. Let alone stuff like the unannounced FE game, and, if the time is right, an AW release date and the Goldeneye reveal.

1. Classic Disney/Pixar games on the Nintendo Switch Online. (at least on the western library)
2. SEGA AGES: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles
3. Fire Emblem Heroes: Nintendo Switch Edition (the porting job will be done by Atlus)

Honest question.

Do you think that Game Boy, Game Boy Advance or Gamecube is the most likely to be added to Switch Online next?

Game Boy. But I think GBA will come at the same time.

Unfortunately, I think GBA will be tied to the expansion. GB could go either way. Expansion if Nintendo is desperate, though it really should be part of base.

And I don't think we get a mainline Pokemon game on either at launch, because Pokemon is weird.

Game Boy, then maybe Game Boy Advance, and then GameCube will probably be part of the NSO Expansion Pass.

As much as I love the gameboy and gameboy color, they'd be out of their damn minds if they tried to make you pay extra for those like they did with N64, so I really hope those become part of the normal subscription.

Some games I would want to see added:
-Super Mario Land
-Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
-Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land
-Wario Land 2
-Wario Blast
-Donkey Kong 94
-Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (DX?)
-Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
-Metroid 2: Return of Samus
-Donkey Kong Land 3
-Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters
-Balloon Kid
-Kirby's Dreamland
-Kirby's Dreamland 2
-Kirby Blockball
-Mega Man
-Mega Man V
-R-Type
-Castlevania Adventure
-Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge
-Kid Dracula
-Contra: The Alien Wars
-Mole Mania
-For The Frog The Bell Tolls
-Gameboy Wars
-Game and Watch Gallery
-The Final Fantasy Legend
-The Final Fantasy Legend 2
-Tetris

-Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
-Mario Golf
-Mario Tennis
-The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
-The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
-Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
-The Pokemon Trading Card Game
-Pokemon Pinball
-Pokemon Puzzle Challenge
-Wario Land 3
-Kirby Tilt n' Tumble (switch can do it, right?)
-Game and Watch Gallery 2
-Game and Watch Gallery 3
-Blaster Master: Enemy Below
-Survival Kids
-Metal Gear Solid
-Street Fighter Alpha: Warrior's Dreams
-Resident Evil: Gaiden
-Shantae
-Warlocked
-Legend of the River King
-Dragon Warrior 1 and 2
-Dragon Warrior 3
-Dragon Warrior Monsters
-Tetris DX

I don't expect to get all of those but if they continue this dripfeed crap that would be a good pool to draw from IMO

I think the entire GB family would likely be added at once or around the same time. Likely GB would be on the basic platform while GBC/GBA/Pokemon because lets be real they would make you pay extra for that would be on the big platform. Streaming GC games might not be as easy to do as well, as much as I would love a hypothetical GC/DC streaming addition to NSO.

I mean, wasn't the GBA leaked earlier ? I take them with a grain of salt, but still. Seemed kinda credible. Even if I'd want GameCube more. I've been dying to play some of those games. So far am most happy with the SNES games however, for sort of obvious reasons.

Hey all! On the writing team we had this fun idea for an article, gauging the community on a few characters and seeing what they think of them both in terms of likelyhood and want. Feel free to reply here. https://forms.gle/EhYpSMK8Zrd67GDy7

I plan on doing this series to cover basically every single branch of Smash characters. This one right here is just focused on the Mario sub series and Mario series. I already am planning out which ones to put in the next poll, which should be on Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, and Star Fox.

I'll just say that I think only Captain Toad is likely as a recurring main series character. Waluigi might get promoted (or even same-game promoted) on massive demand despite or because of being "THE spin-off character".

I voted Waluigi as a 6 in likely, 5 in want. Can't deny he's popular and demanded, am just totally lukewarm about the idea of him in Smash. He's popular but easily overshadowed by anyone else from Mario, and it could be any character at this point honestly. A new Mario character is al kat inevitable, but I couldn't answer who it's gonna be even with a gun pointed at my head.

Game Boy and potentially also GBA at the same time.

Could see a setup where GB/GBC titles are part of the regular Switch Online package while GBA requires the expansion.

I think it'll be a while before we see any Gamecube stuff on NSO. Sorry Melee fans

I'm apathetic to all potential newcomers, but the fact that Waluigi has appeared in tons and tons of Mario spin-offs since Mario Tennis 64 could at least count for something. His claim to fame is being THE spin-off man after all.

Results will be updated when we cut off the survey, though I will say right now that with our decent sample size so far, some... interesting data trends have shown up. Two notable outliers in terms of performance from what I generally expected, one in each direction. Data for some characters so far is pretty much on the nose though for what I more or less expected people to think.

In the article I will be sharing my general thoughts, but one thing that I will note is Mario is one of the few series that I think outright has a decent shot of getting more than one newcomer. I think that it is reasonably likely that it just gets one new character, but unless Smash goes in the direction of a super hard reboot, I think two unique mario newcomers is not out of the question.

Perhaps that were true back in Smash 4, but Mario has refrained from introducing new recurring main series characters since IIRC.

Two Mario newcomers is a lot, am kind or curious how you think that's possible. I mean, yeah I could see it if they'd cut down on some characters as Piranha Plant, Dr.Mario and Daisy honestly, but do you include Donkey Kong characters in this criteria too?

I’m talking purely for the Mario franchise. If we are gonna be real, I think most people can agree that most franchises are not going to get more than 1 rep. Mario though I can see getting two new characters even without cuts. It’s their big flagship franchise and there are at least four candidates for the main Mario series I would say are reasonably likely picks.

Keep in mind this doesn’t mean we are guaranteed to get two Mario characters. But when you look at other franchises in smash I think Mario getting two unique newcomers is a much more feasible option than most.

Yes I'll agree there. Mario is always most likely to get a newcomer of sorts, but outside of Captain Toad and Pauline, and maybe Waluigi I really struggle to think of feasible newcomers. Maybe Nabbit? Has he gotten any role recently ?

There's also Paper Mario I guess, but the more games he gets, the less popular he gets. Kind of ironic in a way but mostly sad. Even I myself nearly don't want the character anymore despite Paper Mario being my most wanted Mario newcomer for the longest time.

Personally I also think it's very possible to get two Donkey Kong and Zelda newcomers, even if one of them would be an Echo. These are very overlooked series in terms of newcomers after all, and outside of Pokemon are the biggest flagship series Nintendo has.

I wasn’t counting echos for this, I was just looking at unique newcomers. DK or Zelda or Kirby all imo could easily get an echo and a unique newcomer. You can take this further and do third parties where I think quite a few of them have obvious echo candidates. The main reason I mentioned unique newcomers specifically is that I think echos as a concept will be pursued more in the future. I think that in the next game pending a hard reboot we will probably get at least the same number of echos we got in Ult, but probably more given their positive reception.

Heck, Dry Bowser and Funky Kong were both on the Poll specifically for their echo potential.
Who are those?
Wait for the article :p.

Now that Goku is on Fortnite...
Will Sakurai (or his successor) will rectify by removing that rule for envy?
The first non-video game character will be Woody Woodpecker due to Universal.

Say, remember awhile back when we were debating whether or not Embracer Group was a sleeper pick for a future Smash? Well, they recently bought SEVEN companies (including Limited Run Games of all things), and um...

If this keeps up, then I would mark them as a "maybe".

This'll be exiting!

One character I do want to talk about is Captain Toad. While going into Ultimate I considered him a very likely pick, I don't have nearly as much hope for him Smash 6. He's one of the few non-revolving cast characters where I think his time legitimately passed. 2013-18 was peak Captain Toad, he had a big role in 3D world, got his own spinoff, and that spinoff got ports to both the 3DS and Switch. Along with Isaac and Bandana Dee, I think that if Sakurai had any more room to add characters to base Ult, he would have added Captain Toad, but he didn't and CT had no reason to be added over the characters that made it to base. Other than a low effort DLC campaign for the Switch port of Treasure Tracker in 2019, he really hasn't gotten anything else since (not even a role in Bowser's Fury, an expanded port of what essentially started his career). Unless a Treasure Tracker 2 or something happens in the next few years (which I don't feel is very likely), I can't imagine he'll be added in Smash 6
