Negotiatons take time, assuming development of characters only takes 4 months like Sakurai implied, there's still months of back and forths, checking contracts for licensing, etc before you can even get to development, especially as Sakurai said Nintendo planned a season pass behind his back
An interviewer asked an SNK producer about Smash and he gave a general "yeah I'd be down for it" response. I don't get how this would've deconfirmed Terry. Like what else was he supposed to say?
the SNK guy talks about how hed like to see Poppy in Smash. If SNK knew they had a rep in smash at that time, he wouldnt speak about Poppy.

They're speaking in past tense. It's not the same as a director saying now that they would like a character in Smash.
That doesn't follow. They could negotiate Banjo without having set plans for Terry.
The relevant question isn't when Nintendo chooses a character, it's when the company is knows that Nintendo wants their character.
Eggman would be a pretty darn neat choice for a Sonic newcomer. Don't know if people would have wanted Tails/Shadow more and thus scoff his inclusion, but he is the one big Sonic character left that is only held back by Spirits stuff, not also an Assist Trophy and/or Mii Costume. Plus he was there with Sonic from the start.
He can know Terry is in and still like to see Poppy in Smash.
None of this has to do with THE ORIGINAL ARGUMENT that Tracer isnt on a Smash Pass atm.
I doubt that a dev would highlight a character for smash different from the one that they supposedly already agreed upon
I love this because this normally goes unspoken, but this is pretty much how EVERY game developer feels.
Why?
Imagine Banjo being agreed upon to enter smash behind the scenes, and then later phil spencer talks about how he wants Master Chief in Smash. would not bee a good look

You forgot "irrelevant game bad", "non-Nintendo system bad" and "M-rated game bad", but otherwise yeah.
Even in the interview the SNK guy said Poppy would just be an interesting pick for him personally. Everyone knows Poppy would never get in over someone like Terry. I'm not sure why the SNK guy talking about Poppy as a fun idea would supposedly deconfirm Terry.
Nothing in this three letter tweet precludes contact already having been made regarding the collaboration.

Except there's nothing to prove Gwen's argument is incorrect other than you saying it is incorrect. You haven't provided any evidence other than Phil Spencer being open to Banjo being in Smash, which doesn't say anything at all, especially since Grant Kirkhope said something to the effect of Banjo not being in Smash while he was working on music for Banjo in Smash.
For the record, WO4U is being released on the Switch and PC as well. It just so happened that Playstation's twitter account were the 1s to announce Hayabusa in the game.
Where is the evidence they hadn't planned this then? You're saying it's a fact, meaning you MUST have actual evidence that SNK and Nintendo had no discussions about the matter at that point
if you read anything else, i provided examples of 343 and master chief, cuphead devs, and the kingdom hearts dev.
And I provided an example of a developer explicitly lying to fans that you said nothing about. That speaks volumes about the inability of your argument to refute valid evidence against it.

That's not evidence that it directly means that. We literally have examples of this being used for PR and it works then too
Regardless, he still had an active role in the game and was more than likely working with Nintendo on Banjo content when he said that.
