I think my main question is:

Nintendo's been dropping a "big" reveal at a steady pace about once per week since the middle of August, probably to just push out all their stuff that they've had on the backburner.

But looking at this week.... what exactly do they have left? Yes, Pikmin 3 HD is coming, but that's not til October 30th, and it already got a detailed trailer anyway. Yes, Mario 35 launches this week, but that already got discussion in the Mario Direct.

Unless it's Crown Tundra, or we get yet another completely new game dropped on our head like Kirby Fighters 2, there's literally nothing else now. Like, Animal Crossing's update was one of the last big things standing in the way of news, and we got that last week, so... what's this week?

If there's no Smash, or nothing in general, my only guess is either that:

A) We technically got 2 things last week(Kirby Fighters and Animal Crossing), which is the first time that's happened not counting a partner Direct, so maybe that's compensating for a dead week
B) They just stop cold turkey period, and we're left completely in the dark

At that point, I'd have to wonder why they're holding the Smash announcement back. We already know the notifications are ready to drop and considering Min Min's presentation was recorded in May, CP7 couldn't have been that far behind.

So what's with the timing here? Was the character harder to balance? Are they just trying to space things out because of COVID? Or are they waiting for something in particular?

I can't imagine what they'd be waiting for tbh. If it was meant to tie into another game of theirs, well, we've probably seen everything that they have to offer unless there's another smaller title coming that we don't know about.

I thought the logic behind "One reveal a week" was sound, it'd be a way of stretching out what they have to show for as long as they can to buy time between releases, but then we got two things last week, albeit, one was very time sensitive. So at this point, I have no idea what's going on.

We can clearly see the gaps in the notifications, which, to me, says everything's ready to go and is probably nothing more than a push of the button since, ya know, those hidden notifications probably wouldn't even exist if they weren't already made, but.... I just dunno, I can't get a read on Nintendo right now.

I know people don't wanna hear it but, at this point, I would not be surprised if we all just wake up and boom, CP7 on Youtube, no warning, so surprise, **** you and **** covid here you go.

I am begging you Nintendo, PLEASE don't let this happen.
I don't expect it to happen, but at this point, I'll take anything.

If I have to trade a day's build up of excitement for getting CP7 spoiled via Youtube thumbnail, so be it. Like, neither Mario nor Zelda's new game were hyped up at all, one being goddamn Mario's 35th anniversary, something that in the past would have 100% been given at the very least a day's heads up over Twitter to signify it's coming.

****'s weird right now. Throw out what you 'think' you know and prepare for the worst. I don't want a shadow drop, but honestly? Those notifications wouldn't even exist if the character wasn't ready to go I'd imagine. Just drop the damn thing and let us get on with our lives.

Ah the smell of a fresh new week and hopeful minds of finally getting our next character.

Honestly, I feel like the time is near. October is just around the corner and as many have mentioned, outside of potential new (small) games all Nintendo still has is Crown Tundra and Smash. Now would be the perfect time for it before hopping onto promoting Pikmin 3 DX which is the next big release, right?

That we know of, yes. Mario 35 launches this week, but I can't imagine that'd be our 'news' for the week when that was already covered in the Mario Direct.

If Mario 35 doesn't qualify as news, then aside from another "New game out of thin air", then this week is completely dry outside of Crown Tundra blocking our path.

Monster Hunter's current representation in Smash is still really weird to me. They have

  • Rathalos, a boss fight who doubles as an assist.
  • Two songs, one of which is Rathalos' theme.
  • A Rathalos spirit.
  • A Monster Hunter themed area in WoL...with no Monster Hunter spirits aside from the aforementioned Rathalos.

It's really sparse representation, yet Rathalos being a boss is something that stands out compared to most "underrepped" franchises. You'd think that if they really truly wanted to "represent" a franchise as big as Monster Hunter, they'd have more music, more spirits the old mii costumes and maybe a stage. Instead it's just Rathalos and that's it. There hasn't even been a spirit event.

Not that I think this actually points towards anything. If they were holding back content for DLC, we probably would have had to have seen it in FP1.

Eh, I'm probably overthinking this.

I very much agree that the Monster Hunter series' representation in Smash, as it currently is, is really strange. It's like they wanted Monster Hunter to have a much bigger presence in the base game, but they weren't able to include much due to time constraints or other issues, so they just shoved the series' mascot into the base game while still leaving the door open for additional content down the line.

Whether it's a fully playable character who comes with a stage and more music, or just a plain Spirit Event like what Resident Evil got, I think Monster Hunter is bound to eventually get some more stuff in Smash Ultimate.

I think we spend too much time swooning over characters who have recently had games when I'm not even sure that's why Nintendo picks those characters.

Persona 5 has been out for almost 3 years after Joker was announced, Banjo & Kazooie haven't had a new game in years, same with Terry Bogard and Arms has been out for 3 years until Min Min came along. Only Hero and Byleth are directly chosen due to having a recent game and even then you could argue that the Hero alts counter that point.

All I'm trying to say is that it's TIME TO SPLIT!

Given we got two things the last week. What are the chances we could get two things this week? (Crown Tundra and Smash).
Don't know how likely it is, but it's certainly not out of the question, considering Min Min's Sakurai Presents video (June 22nd) was livestreamed the same week as a Pokemon Direct (June 24th, the one that revealed Pokemon Unite, I believe).

It definitely feels like a shadowdrop for a reveal like Age of Calamity or a release ala Kirby Fighters is the bigger obstacle to a Smash release than DLC news, even for Pokémon.

Why would there be a shadowdrop for one of those when they just revealed more info on the former since yesterday and the day before as well as revealing Kirby Fighters last week?

Honestly, with us being 8 months into FP2 and STILL only having 1 character, I'm just tired of the wait for CP7 at this point. I just want them revealed, even if it's in shadowdrop form, so we can atleast finally move onto losing our collective minds over CP8 speculation.

Well I meant a shadowdrop or release similar to those; like Nintendo announcing a game for release later like they did for Age of Calamity or releasing a smaller title like Kirby Fighters.

Indeed. MonHun is just massive. I can count on several kids having pencil cases and book bags of it. There’s also an entire story arc devoted to MonHun in Gintama.

Monster Hunter's big enough that it sounds like Smash benefits more from it being in than the other way around, and that sort of thing probably factors into negotiations. Maybe the Rathalos was all they could afford to license? It's not really like Dragon Quest where it's big in Japan but not the West and would benefit from a push either.

Either that or they blew their budget on MonHun and the rest of the pass is Nintendo-owned characters and whoever else SNK had on hand in exchange for a bag of potato chips.

Still not as great as the Character Popularity Poll Results arc or the Fake Timeskip arc.
Yes, those are real story arcs in Gintama.

Color me skeptical about no other announcements until we hit Wednesday. Crown Tundra could be the big news of he week, but Pokemon is its own beast, and that presentation tomorrow with a reveal by Nintendo specifically for something else either the day after or Thursday does not feel out of the question yet.

I'll gladly take Crown Tundra as this weeks news as I'm super eager to learn more of it, but Pokemon typically does its own thing, we did have Min Min and Pokemon Unite presentations the same week after all. Wed-Fri is still up for grabs, but we'll see.

At least Smash is the only thing left haha!
