I never played Octopath, why is it making people talk about one of the best ATs in the game

One of the main characters of Octopath is a large knight so the spirit battle uses Black Knight.

Not gonna lie, I would have really liked for the Black Knight to be playable. I've always liked swords and knights since I was young, and there's never really been a character in Smash that has that "heavily armored knight" appearance. I feel like he would have been one of my favorite characters to play as based solely on design alone.


I think he would have been a great Echo Fighter for Ike, honestly. Thinking about it now, it's sort of a missed opportunity. Oh well. Maybe another character will bring that armored knight look to the roster someday.

that or they just wanted him to be in another spirit fight for the novelty, since certain summons don't get a lot of play in spirit fights
they didn't even add Spring Man's assist into HIS OWN spirit...

Dunno about you guys, but the only character I really, truly want now is Bomberman. The poor guy deserves to be in Smash so badly. Too bad his fanbase pretty much died since he got announced as a AT :/

Kinda thinking they did this to put a bigger spotlight on the Mii costume. Mii costumes in base game do tend to be overlooked (especially since DLC Mii costumes get more of the spotlight).

I'm pretty happy to see Octopath spirit in smash, I didn't really enjoy the game personally, but for being a very good success un sales it really deserve some representation.

Also we had 2 spirits event from Square recently (this and trials) so I hope people will stop the "Square is stingy" meme each time one of their characters is brought up.

Wow, I can't believe that this Spirit event confirmed that canonically, Olberix adopts Primrose, Cyrus adopts Tressa, H'aanit and Ophelia are a couple, as are Therion and Alfyn.

Anyway, kinda curious how exactly the Spirits are assigned to the characters. Black Knight as Olberic, Palutena as Ophelia, Robin as Cyrus, and Therion as Sheik are kinda obvious, but the other four are a bit uncertain to me. Who's H'aanit supposed to be, for example? Villager?

That's historically been a thing for the series, though. The original BD was also heavily advertized by Nintendo, and I think that was also the case for Second. Though a BD character would be fine by me, especially if they go the Hero route with them.

It is funny how Squenix is doing this and was more liberal with DQ's music and yet we're still sitting on two generic tracks for FF. Literally FF, very known for its music! I'm never gonna get over it, I'm afraid.

I mean, if Tekken really is out of the running, I think a Spirit event is fair. At least it could give Tekken fans some content.

Just realized I forgot that one Arcsys event with Kunio. Wonder if we could get one for other franchises? I guess weirder things have happened, with the Warframe spirit and all.

tbh i think the circumstances are as good as they're ever going to be for bravely so it's a real now-or-never moment for its inclusion in FP2

• octopath's stellar sales leading to the immediate development of bravely 2; nintendo spies a clear opportunity to develop a strong exclusive franchise with octopath's playerbase
• bravely 2 getting announced by nintendo and square in front of 45 million viewers at TGA 2019; one of only two switch games (next to NMH3) at the event
• bravely 2 getting a lengthy dedicated segment in the march mini-direct and an immediate demo release
• nintendo pushing said demo in your face in the switch news and NA website at every possible opportunity (even when you've already downloaded and beaten it)
• octopath spirits indicates the smash team has had direct contact with bravely's producers

everything about their current treatment of BD2 reads identically to their treatment of DQ11S, and we saw how that turned out in relation to smash

What's unusual to me is that this event has been pulled but has not officially been advertised yet. Normally you'd think it would be revealed yesterday. It probably means very little but it's definitely strange. I expect it'll be announced tonight. Doubtful they'll hit us with any kind of Smash news this week. Maybe it was delayed because of Tanabata.

I fell like people / you are misinterpreting what that concern actually is

We are not saying that "Square in stingy" so we are not getting another character

That's far the case since it's pretty clear they are more comfy with shilling out for DLC then being in base

However, when we say that "Square in stingy" (which is true outside of Smash btw)

We are just acknowledging that if Square is going to do another DLC, they're a pretty good chance there are going to be some unnecessary caveats

People like to point out how better DQ has gotten then FF, so that means that the whole thing "Square in stingy" was false!

Until you realize that technically, each Hero only got 2 songs :/ The exact same amount that Cloud got, + some gimped versions of the songs too

A before someone screams, "well that was just the composer tho"
The composer works for hand and hand with Square

Even with this spirt event, I fell like there were some unnecessary caveats going behind the scene again, because why in the world did they do "2 for 1" characters again?

So no, I and many others don't think because of Square weird philosophies, means we are not going to get another character, far from it. What we do fear is that (especially for someone like Sora or the kid form TWEWY) will be some sorta catch with them, that will make them not feel "complete" as the other DLC fighters
