Well glad to the rumours going again. We had a lovely break from the same few characters over and over but now we've rested and we can start pouring over the scraps of info for anything that may show what's next.

That was a lovely break though, after a whole year's worth of back and forth in regards to the Microsoft character and then the Square character shortly after the game came out. It feels like a huge weight has finally been lifted off our chests.

I guess its a good thing we won't have to wait as long until we find out who fighter 4 is at least. Especially when the rumour goers are revving their engines again...

I don't think the last two fighters will leak personally. Square has a history of being leaky and Banjo probably leaked because of the involvement of an English speaking company. If none of the Smash 4 DLC leaked besides Cloud, I think, or would like to think, at least, we are in the clear.

Nope. When Tansut asked about Erdrick, he was given a "Sure why not", which gave me the impression Erdrick was nothing more than a costume. Erdrick is also a virtual unknown outside of Japan. Luminary or Eight both sounded significantly way more likely to be the face from the start, because they were recognizable. The only thing I didn't consider before the reveal of DQXI in general was Luminary as the more likely of the two. I already was sure Luminary or Eight was the face, if we were getting Hero anyway. And then more XI promotion, and Luminary felt far more obvious to me of the two.

Relevancy pretty much was my main reason. I really never believed once Erdrick was the main character alone or the face whatsoever. It never added up. Not for Paid DLC. Base game, sure. Paid DLC, though? No, that requires it to be easy to sell. Erdrick is not a case of that. They're after more than one region, after all. Keep in mind even before Tansut I had a lot of issues believing a Japan-centric character that barely had a presence in the US or UK could be a face alone. Never mind the full out character without alts. It's part of why I considered Slime also more likely, due to vastly more worldwide appeal. Brave being rather vague as a datamined name didn't help either. It could mean just about anything at that point, as the names for Arsena, Joker, and Piranha Plant were all over the place. In the end it turned out to be more or less the exact name of Hero for Japan, not a "codename" like Jack was. So it was never a real hint either, which heavily changed what we know of speculation. We still don't know what happened with Jane either. She might've been cut or become a Mii costume(as they aren't going to ignore the fact they licensed a character. They'd want their money back, and Atlus/Sega wouldn't be happy if they licensed something they never used. Some renegotiations most likely happened to remove Jane's usage, assuming something else didn't happen, like the Mii costume or a Spirit. If somehow she became an Echo, that probably required renegotiations too).

Probably September since it's a decent 3 months wait between June and September.

I think both their names were datamined... I remember reading articles about it back in the day. In fact, I remember people citing this as the possible reason for the codename usage with Joker and Hero.

Someone exploited the data, was able to access them, and started streaming their gameplay on unannounced stages.

It would've been nice to see what the reactions could've been to Ryu, given basically no one expected him prior to the datamine.

Click the smily option in the post maker and you'll see icons for Smash.

The primary source of Erdrick/Hero was a datamine for a character that was named "Brave" which is a direct translation of "Yuusha," the Japanese title for the Hero class in Dragon Quest. There was also Tansut, a Square insider who had previously leaked Cloud, saying he was told a Dragon Quest character would be in Smash, and Erdrick was likely a part of it, but it was unclear if he was the primary face of the character or not. And Vergeben had known about a "Square rep" since... August? A while ago.

I did not really look into his exact posts. So I only know sparse details(if anything, this is how leaks usually are, sparse details). For instance, Verge was never told that Isabelle was a semi-clone. Just that she was playable, and she might be an Echo. He gave that exact information, that he cannot confirm her role other than playable. The only Echo he knew for sure was Ken.

Well, I did predict Luminary being the face with other Hero alts, and I did see a small amount of posts on here saying the same thing. But it wasn't a popular thing to say because it went against Erdrick being the key character(which appears to not be the case).

That said, maybe you can find that one. That'd be good to see. Maybe we had the real leak at some point.

Kyo Kusanagi, from The King of Fighters. You can search for his thread, because people wrote better reasonings than I can on mobile right now, but some points are:

• SNK is one of the last notable japanese companies not in Smash yet
• Franchise is not dead, having received its latest entry around 2 or 3 years ago. Still played competitively and popular, mainly in Asia and Latin America.
• SNK has had a few recent crossovers with other fighting games recently, but they haven't used Kyo as a guest character yet. He's one of the few remaining popular characters from SNK who hasn't been used, in fact.
• Also, Smash is one of the last notable fighting games SNK has never had a crossover with.
• Finally, KOF itself was born as a kind of crossover fighting game for SNK. Sakurai seems to have enjoyed playing it at some point in time according to an old Famitsu column.

I'm far from the biggest KOF fan, but I think Kyo has a decent shot.

Except isn't it agreed at this point every DLC fighter is from a new franchise?

Only ones I can think is Nakoruru and Mai Shiranui given their popularity.

Plus no one would had exceptedof all characters to make the cut. Knowing Sakurai it wouldn't surprise me if hegives us another surprise/dark horse pick.

I can also see the possibility given EVO this year.

This tweet you may be talking about is 1 day before that tweet, the female that looks like a fighting game character that throws weapon projectiles has not yet debunked.

Story of Seasons farmer. I wrote up essentially an entire dissertation on why he is more likely than people give him credit for (which isn't really to say that he's actually terribly likely, just relatively speaking). I would definitely go with them for a dark horse candidate. Not super likely necessarily, but significantly more so than most would first think in my opinion. Because I do legitimately think it's possible. Not too many people seemed interested in discussing the possibility tho.

No. Not everyone agrees with that speculation.

It could happen, but that's just a possible interpretation of a vague statement.

There is always the possibility that Geno is playable but not part of the fighter pass.

Though if there's no Mii costume in the next patch and Glitch theory holds true, keep an eye on Mii Gunner.

The Tag Team mode for Squad Strike also seems to take inspiration from KOF, in my opinion.
