Didn't Zhuge Liang kind of allude to Byleth the night before his direct reveal? He didn't mention him by name, but he also said something like "Reactions tomorrow are gonna be fun" and put the Michael Jackson eating popcorn gif from Thriller, which is borderline shorthand for "time to watch the **** fly".

Either way, I think Smash speculation is a lot more fun without leaks. They tend to monopolize the conversation, either by just spoiling who it is outright or through make us fly through hoops for clout. It's a solid video and it does an excellent job exploring multiple options on who the character could be and what gameplay mechanics could come over from ARMS.

You know, with a video Maximilian Dood posted about this game being the Golden Age of Smash and hypothesizing if Smash Ultimate can make it to future consoles, I was thinking about what if this game can reach 100 characters? We so far have 83 (77 of which we know which is just insane...). If you could fill up the remaining spots with characters to make it to 100, who would they be? They cannot be Assist Trophies and you are limited to just one Spirit to be a character. Mine would be something like this (besides the ARMS character):

Mee makes sense. Mi is said like Mee, and Min Min is basically Meen Meen. So they simply did a Japanese sound to make a quick codename.

Or it could be another thing, but that's super logical. Marth is just Mars in Japanese, after all.

...And also, it's her codename in ARMS. My guess is her codename is the Japanese first three letters, but eh.

If “Forest” is meant to refer to Geno it’s a bit too obvious. Only way we found out Brave connected to Hero was due to the Japanese word for Brave being “Yuusha”, what Hero was written as in Japanese. “Master” for Byleth was a direct translation of “Sensei” which can also mean Teacher. Everything else (Jack for Joker, Buddy for Banjo, Dolly for Terry) were a bit more roundabout (still say Dolly refers to Terry’s Fatal Fury home stage of a train dolly car). ...Speaking of, does Duck Hunt have two actual character files? Cause I feel like the Pokemon duo were more akin to them, tied at the hip and not really separate KO's at all.

Yes, that's her codename in ARMS.

I don't think he'd repeat that codename. ...I could be wrong that said.

I think the big two is way more likely than the big four since Spring Man and Ribbon Girl's abilities are complimentary to each other whereas Ninjara and Min Min's abilities would either muddy things up or have to be thrown out completely from a mechanical standpoint. Not saying they won't, but it would be odd to see the character be a fusion of two playstyles, and ignore half the other playstyles and mechanics the character is trying to represent. It'd be like if Hero took clear inspiration from Dragon Quest III and Dragon Quest XI S, but then completely ignored the other two character's games, or if they threw in two other whip wielding Belmonts, but said characters added nothing to the moveset even though Simon and Richter were sharing moves so why would the other two not?

I love the turbo mode idea though, and I think it's the best way to keep true to ARMS's mechanics. Speaking of, I wouldn't be surprised if their Side Special was just a dash that you could hold to charge your ARMS. Doing so would allow you to keep the method of charging your ARMS without tying it to the dodge roll, which wouldn't be great, as it would encourage a degenerate playstyle that the game punishes you for.

I kinda doubt that's true. Unless it works differently than I'm aware of, the duck wouldn't be able to move around as freely if it was attached to the dog. It could be stored in the same file though. I believe this is how character's weapons are typically stored.

I also remember Nintendo owning the Japanese names of those particular franchises, but nothing else.

...Though I'm pretty sure they're two models, but one solid character file? Cause that's a different thing. You can have more than one model but use one file, I think. A good example is Zelda using the Phantom Knight. Or like when King Dedede summons Waddle Dees.

Considering we never got those Spirits it likely means that Nintendo forgot they don't fully own it, as NoJ has ownership or publishing rights iirc, which then got the Spirits deleted when they went "Wait **** we don't actually own these"
