While those things wouldn't help much now, improving online would be for the future. Not just neccessarily Smash 6 (and beyond) but also perhaps a Ultimate DX or whatever if they commit to that. I know online's been one of Nintendo's weaknesses for a while, but patching up such a weakness would be beneficial even if it takes a lot to do so.Even that wouldn't really help. EVO is a compilation of some of the biggest fighting games in the industry and not a single one of them had good online so they had to be dropped from the main event. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 gets a pass because it preceded online, but still.
Really all fighting game devs should look to the games that actually made it to EVO this year.
The four open online tournaments at EVO are, for reference:
MK11
Killer Instinct 2013
Them's Fightin' Herds
Skullgirls
Those four are the ones with good enough or better netcode (and without weird licensing issues like Power Rangers). The other 8 will be invite-based tournaments. EVO did note "With special exhibitions and content for EVO 2020's Original Lineup" meaning Smash will get something there still - whether it's a trailer or exhibition tournament, whatever.
