WAAAH!!! Mama Mia! I-uh disagree wholefartedly!
The chance of it NOT being Spring Man is about 15% in my estimation. Call it a fan rule, but Smash has ALWAYS gone with protagonists and mascots first to represent their series. Spring Man is both. The ONLY reason I have any doubt whatsoever about Spring Man not getting in is the Assist Trophy dilemma. But even with that doubt in mind, what BETTER way to start off the new pass than to explicitly confirm that NOTHING deconfirms a character as DLC?
Though, to be clear, I think we're getting 4-in-1 with Spring Man, Ribbon Girl, Ninjara, and Min Min. Spring Man is just the default.

It won't be Spring Man because:
1. They wouldn't have made it a guessing game if it were.
2. Min Min and Twintelle are far more popular.
3. Arms is a new franchise, it doesn't have to stick to the same protagonist in the sequel. They can always change mascots as well, other fighting games have done it.
4. They've never upgraded an Assist Trophy in the same game before, and never change in-game content once it's in, besides character balances or fixes.

I don't think your points aside from maybe 1 are good arguments.

Smash had no problem putting in protagonists over more popular characters before. Also just because they can change the protagonist doesn't mean they will and even if they do, it's more likely that Smash will draw more from the first game, like how we got Inklings from Splatoon, not Splatoon 2.

Also, "they didn't do that before so they'll never do it again" isn't concrete proof. There are multiple ways to make Spring Man playable while keeping the Assist Trophy.

No, Sakurai will bring either another Arms fighter with interesting new move style for Smash or Arms and Smash will get an all-knew fighter for promotion.

"Can you imagine the outrage" is a nonargument. Every new character will cause people to spew hate on the internet. That didn't prevent Incineroar, Piranha Plant, Hero or Byleth from getting in.

Hero's outrage was only because they weren't Banjo or Geno while Incineroar's was because it meant the totally absolutely foolproof leak that's super duper credible trust me guys was fake, those criticisms are nothing but whining for the sake of whining

I hope that it's because of Spike Chunsoft that there's no PMD content in Smash. It would just be legal troubles, which is much preferable to the alternative: ignorance or uncaring.

Pokémon's rights issues are already a mess but this would be adding another company into the mix for a sub property Nintendo doesn't even have much control over.

It's that case for most Pokémon spin-offs. The only ones to ever get content (Snap and Detective Pikachu) already had their companies aboard. Hal made Snap and also made Melee. Creatures Inc made Detective Pikachu and they were already part of the Pokémon licensing stuff.

We'll probably get at least Spring Man. I can also see other characters somehow getting in as alts but I don't think they'll skip him just because he's an item.

Note that I'm biased as hell, he's my favorite character. Seeing him being an AT was great but if we're going to get a playable character from ARMS, I hope he'll be included.

So this kind of argument is just stupid... maybe they are pissed that PMD games are generally more beloved by fans than many core games?

I think it’l be Spring Man with either Ribbon Girl as the sole alt at least or a Koopalings/Heroes situation with multiple characters as alts( with each having unique animations to preserve their personalities ) at most.
