I have no idea if this was intentional or not but this is so great, ahaha. BTW, ya didn't miss anything. In fact... Today was so bad, I think Nintendo might shadow drop something out of pity.
Well in that case let's keep this **** show going!

STEVE IS BETTER THAN BANJO
ERDRICK IS A LITERALLY WHO
THE GRINCH LEAK IS REAL
FIRE EMBLEM ARE ARE GENERIC ANIME SWORDFIGHTERS, ALL THE POKEMON SUCK, NO MORE MARIO REPS
RIDLEY IS TOO BIG FOR SMASH

...So what was the point of this whole discussion? That you want people to stop asking for certain characters?
Not quite. Keep asking for characters all you want. Just realize there’s a pretty good chance that if they’ve been given a non-playable role, things may stay that way until Smash post-Ultimate.

That’s pretty much what I’m saying.

I don't have any strong feelings towards Ezio in Smash, but if he comes with an Italian stage, I can at least die happy knowing that between that and Joker, I can do a decent job pretending there's Jojo content in this game.
If you squint hard enough, the Smash roster has perfect stand-ins for JoJo characters.
  • Jonathan Joestar - Hero
  • Dio - Dark Samus
  • Joseph Joestar - Richter
  • Jotaro Kujo - Bayonetta
  • Muhammad Avdol - Banjo-Kazooie
  • Jean Pierre Polnareff - Meta Knight
  • Giorno Giovanna - Joker
  • Jolyne Kujo - Sheik
Every JoJo is here! ... except Josuke. He can't be in Smash because his hair looks like ****.

I thought it was established that Simon is the Jonathan to Joseph's Richter. After all, we all know that Castlevania and Jojo is the same thing. :p

Everyone says One Winged Angel cuz it's so famous, but I always preferred the cool song Birth of a God that plays in the penultimate fight.

I spent a good few days working on this and some alts.
I know her chances of making it into Smash are practically nil, but I wanted to see what she would be like in 3D.
You can now return to your speculations of Morgan Freeman in Smash.

I'd rather us get another Final Fantasy character. Not from VII. There's so much more to Final Fantasy than just VII and the fact that we haven't gotten ANY music at least, let alone stages or Spirits or bosses, from ANY other FF is downright criminal. Especially with a soundtrack as good as 4 and 6's. As a matter of fact a lot of people wanted Black Mage before Cloud came around so you know what? Why not?

That’s totally fair I’m just in the weird timeline where characters like Cloud and Zack were nothing more than a pipe dream when it came to Smash, now with Cloud in and Zack being perfect material to be an echo fighter I’m just soooooooo hopeful that my favourite FF character gets in along with his pal.

XI or XIV, please. You want a good soundtrack, the latter especially delivers (though both are good).

Tactics... is also acceptable, I suppose (though I'd still whine about them skipping the MMOs)...

The video game character with the best soundtrack potential?
Guitar Hero, obviously.

Random shower thoughts time.

It's funny to me how, when we were all discussing a potential EVO reveal, we all thought it would make the most sense for the fighter to be from a fighting game, given the obvious nature of the event. When nothing came, we all pretty much wrote off the idea of fighter 4 being from a fighting game.

...and then fighter 4 was from a fighting game.

So a bit of a question for you all. Do you think it would have been "smarter" to have revealed Terry at EVO rather than the direct a month after? While the gap for fighter 5 would have been even more agonizing, I think it was very much a missed opportunity. The September direct had MORE than enough to sink our teeth into with Banjo shadow dropping, homerun contest, the meme skeleton, and confirmation that fighter 5 wouldn't be the end of character DLC.

Terry got overshadowed fairly hard by the casual audience. Imagine if he had gotten revealed after grand finals of EVO, the final event of the night, and the "main" game at that. People ACTUALLY freaking out as that invitation slipped by the hands of so many SNK characters. The crowd absolutely ERUPTING. From the community that holds each and every traditional fighter on the same pedestal as each other, at least mostly. I think it would have been absolutely brilliant, and would have gotten a lot of people talking more than the "who?" He got instead. Preaching to the right choir, and all that.

I dunno. What do you think? Would that still have been showing their hand too early?

I think the reason they held Terry off was because Banjo wae still unreleased, and most Smash DLC doesn't get announced before we know when the previously announced characters release, if not the same day. Though Terry was handled pretty poorly in general it seems as his trailer's gameplay section just wasn't shown until he came out

Tbf Terry wasn't overshadowed for no reason, Sans got the most talk about anything in that entire direct so Sans overshadowed literally everything

Contrary to belief, Guitar Hero actually DOES have some covers and new arrangements, despite almost the entire discography indeed being the original masters
take Devil Went Down to Georgia, for example

Do you think it would have been "smarter" to have revealed Terry at EVO rather than the direct a month after?
I do not, as while the FGC as a whole would have appreciated Terry being revealed at one of their big events for the year, they're ironically not the primary audience for who they're marketing Smash to

part of the point of Nintendo having Terry on their hotlist was probably in some way meant to appeal to the FGC, but first and foremost they gotta tell the Nintendo audience, the people that would sit and watch directs at 6, 7, 8 in the morning, that Super Smash Bros. has a new character
it's the same reason why neither Ryu nor Ken were revealed at EVO itself

although like Gwen says, part of why is probably just that Banjo wasn't out yet, and they tend not to confirm new characters until the previous/current newcomer has either already released or had their release dates confirmed, Erdrick and Banjo at E3 being a very special exception

Sakurai just made a tweet that (google) translates to say "Company name + Fighter name. We are always indebted to you." The tweet was in response to a picture of a pharmaceutical company that won a previous Smash tournament Sakurai attended.

I don't understand the specific correlation between the two tweets, but I'm sure I just misunderstand the context. It does seem suspicious that he wouldn't name the company or fighter though... Does Sakurai's tweet have potential of being some kind of hint or is there an explanation that can be made?

If there's potential of this being any kind of hint, Nintendo and Bandai Namco are the first 2 companies that comes to my mind...

I was joking about Guitar Hero being in Smash for it's music.
But technically, Axel Steel, Johnny Napalm, Casey Lynch, etc. ARE video game characters, and I would unironically love them to be playable in Smash. Would be the out of left field move of the century.

Sakurai doesn't hint things, especially not that blatantly.

It's maybe just a thank you tweet. Unless...

I mean, since the DLC was decided like, last year, I doubt that Sakurai would immediately jump the gun with whatever x rep is.

Hmm...Guitar Hero, eh? Good lukc having to deal with every single Western record label just to get the music you need if they ever had a Challenger Pack.

If such a thing were to ever happen, they'd probably just do a bunch of Rock mixes of Nintendo music.

Sorry if I'm being pessimistic, but everyone pretty much knows the game by the mainstream rock music. If we were gonna have that logically, it'll just be part of their respective franchises, and not in this supposed "franchise song list" you theorized.

ARMS didn't "get robbed." A game should have to do more than not suck to get playable representation in Smash.
Really? Cause Ice Climbers doesn't even manage that.

Because, compared to other rpg series out there, TLOZ is pretty...basic.
Well, that's to be expected, what with it not being an rpg series and all.

RPG = Role Playing Game. There are many sub genres. Action, tactical, turn based, so on. Zelda is an 'action adventure RPG'. You're playing the role of a character (Link) on an adventure to save the world and blah blah. It is an RPG.
Cool, so, I'm just playing the role of a plumber on an adventure to save a princess in that classic RPG Super Mario Bros.

ARMs came out 'long enough' before Smash Ultimate (A full year before).
Considering Ultimates roster was decided, like, 2 years before launch, no, wasn't "long enough".

Games like Zelda were called Adventure Games.
And now they're called Action Adventure games.

Nowadays, the term "RPG" seems to encompass anything that involves your character getting upgraded as the game goes along.
Only by idiots. When a game that's clearly not an RPG has leveling and gear added on, it's still the same genre it was before, it just has "rpg elements" now.

Symphony of the Night is still an Action Platformer. But it has rpg elements. God of War is a hack n slash action adventure. With rpg elements.

Fair enough, I could agree if we want to argue in that way. I've always seen Zelda as an RPG because despite the game play, the progression of the game is very much an RPG set up. Do a quest, get an upgrade/mcguffin. The upgrades you get in the form of gear basically are your 'levels' in this stype of game.
Genre is more about gameplay style than it is about progression. I mean, you basically just described a Metroid game as well.

If you want to get technical, Final Fantasy 14 and 7 Remake aren't even RPGs anymore because of their hack-n-slash gameplay.

No seriously, go to any Smash fan who's got a wanted newcomer.
Do you think Midna fans care that the Bridge of Eldin is a stage? Bandanna Dee fans that care about Dreamland 64? How about Isaac or Shadow fans with assist trophies? Maybe their songs got into smash, maybe they get to appear in the background of a stage or hey, maybe they got even a wonky looking mii costume. Is that "satisfactory" for anyone who's a fan of these characters?
Do you think they'd have been happier if they'd got nothing at all?

Conversely, look at people that got their characters in with little to nothing else, for example Roy fans. You think those people care that Roy comes standalone with zero spirits, zero related assist trophies, zero stages, zero anything and like... one music track?
I mean...I was kinda disappointed with the number of Spirits that Hero and Terry got.
