Saw a few things I wanted to comment on, but mainly on Spirit/AT stuff.
Smash is a character game obviously, but I don't think people should discount the unique abilities they have. It's the classic "stare at the CSS screen" mentality. Surely it's important to add characters people ask for, I agree. However, they've got to be different from one another and stand out, otherwise it's going to be boring.
Gameplay and choice of character, I think, are equally important.

Now, to Spirits and Assists.
I saw the discussion earlier about it, and I think both sides misunderstand each other. Folks who advocate for spirit upgrades are seeking for longtime fan wants to be satisfied despite their determined role in the game. I don't necessarily think it's unreasonable to still want a character when they aren't playable.
The part I don't get is when folks see it as a "likely" outcome, or that Sakurai would change the vision of DLC that he's had for 2 games, the vision that has already led to massive DLC sales, and the one that consistently feeds "the record" he's spoken about. Adding particular characters that don't expand the crossover will please certain people, yes...but why not add brand new content that plenty of folks can also enjoy? It’s not impossible but...why would they happen, and, a step further, likely at this point over more 3rd parties?
It's an idea. But it would be good to have justification besides, "People want characters". People also have shown in polls that they want more 3rd parties.
Like, this idea that the development team would have time to process the "backlash" of character not being playable...I fundamentally disagree with the notion that it'll matter. Let's face the facts: Isaac, for example, went from being entirely absent in Smash Wii U to Assist Trophy, Mii Outfit, and Spirit because of fan demand. Despite fan demand, Isaac is not playable. Geno in the past received a Mii Fighter costume, specifically because of fan demand. Sakurai has also blatantly referenced this in past interviews, that Geno is a popular pick. Despite the fan demand, Geno is not playable.
It's not as if the development team didn't know about these two. They absolutely did, otherwise they wouldn't have had the roles they currently do. It's the same thing with Lyn and Waluigi. They're popular characters, but despite that, they're not playable. I personally think part of the "upgrade" idea is that characters haven't truly "made it" unless they're playable, which is silly. It's like a...weird gatekeeping concept.
I guess my point is: This "backlash" that people think is going to get Geno in? Waluigi? They were given their roles despite the knowledge of popularity. Geno being popular isn't new. Sakurai was completely aware of it, yet didn't make him playable. Therefore, it would make sense to assume that more backlash wouldn't make a difference in terms of their playable status.
tl;dr Spirits probably shouldn't be seen as likely until one of them happens; in which case I doubt the team would only upgrade one character. Nevertheless, I suspect Nintendo will follow the same model that has made them large sums of the money...that being: 3rd parties.
