I'm gonna be honest, I can't make any conclusion here. There's a LOT to consider for these two series. Does Sakurai intend to cycle in and out the latest characters? Does he care about the ones he got rid of? What about the fans? What about Ike and Lucario?

There's a lot of ways to interpret what'll happen, but the only thing I'm confident about is that we won't see any other currently existing characters from these two series. No Deoxys, no Sigurd, no Darkrai, no Micaiah. Their chance came and went.

I personally think he'll just bring back Mewtwo and Roy and consider adding a new character to each series. It seems like he just wants to add a new character from each series on top of all the previous ones. I figure that since Jigglypuff is still around long after her moment of glory, Ness is still around despite Lucas being planned to replace him, and both were intended to be in Brawl. Plus, you know, Mewtwo was supposed to be in 64 so Sakurai clearly has a thing for him, and the localization team almost took Roy without Marth in Melee (then decided to bring Marth since it didn't make sense to have one and not the other). They're also both really popular.

Anyway, these two are still up in the air for now.[/COLLAPSE]

I'm gonna go ahead and call it: Mewtwo and Roy will be back, and none of the characters from Brawl will be cut. Every character is at least moderately popular, they all have unique (enough) movesets, and they all fit a niche in the roster. Cutting characters at this point would be stupid and pointless, and I don't think Sakurai is the kind of person that makes stupid and pointless decisions (okay, besides tripping).

@Shorts: Probably not. There's always the possibility, but generally speaking he's probably already got his mind made up on Gen 3 characters.

Meh. I can hope. It's unfortunate. I mean, the third generation brought so much to the series. I mean, at least he realizes that Deoxys is a popular Pokemon, so that's SOMETHING I can cling to.

I mean, I get the whole "1st. Gen is the most popular, and is remembered the most ect". But, the other series have all brought their own peices to Pokemon to make it what it is today, and to see such an important installment like the third series be passed up, just sucks.

A lot of people think the reason he based PT around Gen 1 was because of FR/LG. That pretty much ignores the fact that those Pokemon and Red have always been the most popular. Well, not so much Ivysaur, but you get the idea.

A lot of people are silly then. It's Red, the first playable PT. Of course, adding an alt. Leaf/Blue costume would do a lot of fan service with minimal work involved. Plus All Starters = three of the most popular Pokemon of their generation. End of Story.

Also, I'm assuming cuts are a major option, until given reason to think otherwise, specifically from someone at Nintendo saying "Yeah, no cuts"

@Wavy Gravy: To be fair, he didn't cut Mewtwo and Roy for the fun of it. The only reason it'd be different is if the response from the Brawl cuts encourages him to focus on maintaining the old cast over other content. No promises there.


@Shorts: Well, there's more to the game than playable characters. If you can appreciate all that other content, you probably won't be so bummed out.

Or maybe you will, who knows. I'm still gunning for Castlevania stuff, so I know I'll never be satisfied.


@Clint: Nothing gets me worse than when I make a nickname for someone and they don't catch it. You should be proud too, that's way cooler than Wavy Gravy.


edit @Kuma: I don't think it's necessarily foolish to ignore requests until after he's decided the roster; to do otherwise means to let the most vocal fans call all the shots. Plus, it's not as if those requests have to be related to playable characters (and even then, it works for a landslide winner like Sonic).

Saki's a good bet though, yeah.

Sakurai thinks pretty well of Saki. As far as not including him, it could've been because he wanted the series to have more international exposure, even if S&P2 bombed worse than any other Nintendo game in recent memory.

I have two more questions for Toise. I am curious about your position regarding how likely is Kid Icarus getting a newcomer (or two). Second, I want to know if you see Smash 4 possibly being a no-show at E3 2012 as a result of the delay to Uprsing (which thus makes development for Smash 4 start later, and thus much less likely able to have something to show in time for E3). Starphoenix has postulated that if that does happen, Sakurai will probably just have a CGI trailer that shows off some of the newcomers and possibly new gameplay mechanics. At the very least I expect Smash 4 to have its official name announced at E3 2012.

I can't help but feel he's going to make the exact same mistake. By decided, do you mean "Okay, we have like these many characters, lets try and figure out who works and who doesn't" or something? Because we had seven/six cuts between then and Sonic's inclusion.

Welllllllll, yeah. I like stages. . . Pokeballs just don't cut it for me, or Deoxys. He's a too cool for school Pokemon character that looks similar to a Mother character, like Mewtwo.

mewtwo's kinda disappointing in the sense that when he's balanced for casual play he'll be terrible at the competitive level barring some other gimmick. but.......... I mean yeah mewtwo's low on the tier list in melee... but to people who don't play like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNfMPf_72Vo) mewtwo is actually a perfectly decent character... he's just not easy to use... nor should he be able to wave his hand and kill everything like he could canonically.

It just bothers me a wee bit when people go on about buffing mewtwo.

and sure they could make zoroark and victini and everyone else bad...

though the problem is... since the game is balanced for casual play... certain types character designs will generally be better than others in smash.

Agreed with iblis here, people assume things without backing it up with logic, Sakurai is indeed interested in competative play, why else would he be looking at Ken's hitboxes for inspiration? If anything it's a clear indication that he wants to improve on the mechanics which deals with the competative aspects I believe, so yes, Sakurai will most likely focus more on the competative state of the game since he also has SORA to back him up.
