I stand by this little tidbit from the update thread:

"By the way to those using the "up until now" as proof:

いままで (ima made) = "until now, so far, up to the present"

eg. "There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series so far, and Lucas is very similar."

Translations can shift the meaning of things."

Plus, it's Sakurai.

Say he's gone all you want - I'll keep that shread of hope burning bright until there's a 0% chance.

And I mean 0%. Not like 0.000000000001%. As long as that 1 is there, I'm still truckin'.

After a some major character victories in Sonic and Dedede, I came to visit the Ness camp to offer my sympathies. You guys backed a highly probably character, and although I never mained or secondaried Ness, I was in favor of his return and Smash will never be the same with him gone. I think this also, whether only slightly by like 1% or almost completley, lessons the chances of Captain Falcon, Luigi, Jigglypuff, Marth, Ganondorf, and Roy. If Ness isnt returning, why should they?

Again, Ness suporters, as you move on to other characters, I hope you have some victories. I have had plenty as a character supporter...the only confirmations I wasnt a heavy backer of were Lucas and Ike, in which I was indifferent. And I am sure you will all have many victories and enjoy the game in February when we can finally Brawl.

*if this post sounds like sarcasm, it isnt*

Because they arent from Earthbound. It comes with loving anything to do with Earthbound, your inevitably going to get s**t on by Nintendo at some point.

It raises Lucas' chances? Because... he's the only other viable Earthbound character? Well, I guess... at least a bit.

Well... uhm. I don't really understand how one could miss Ness so much when Lucas is such a worthy successor and Earthbound gets the representation it deserves... but my condolences, I suppose.

Except...
You would expect people to come up with, oh there's still a 0.00000000000001% of him coming back threads, I on the other hand, don't live in denial.
Dammit! I was so hoping to be able to make fun of you! *shakes fist* :p

LIES! Ness lives :O!

Really though, this guy better be better. >_>.... hehe but honestly "Ness" only sings to my heart because of Melee. Lucas should grow on meh. Hopefully Dsmash and Usmash will be more useful and Fsmash!? The crack of the bat was phat. Needs to be kept.. or I dunno, it must live up to it. KEEP F-AIR!! PLZ THX

Let's see....

This post does not affect Captain Falcon's chances at all since Captain Falcon is the main character in the F-Zero series. Ness was a main character in one game for Earthbound. I really do not understand people that think Captain Falcon is going to be out from Brawl, that makes no sense....

This post does not affect Luigi's chances since he is waaaaayyyyyyyy more popular and known character than Ness ever has been. Whether Luigi returns with his same move set is unknown....

Jigglypuff is not hurt by this post either since it is a popular Pokemon character that has appeared in both Smash games so far with an original move set.

Marth is the first character in your list mentioned that might not be returning, though it is not because of today's post. It would have more to do with Ike being in Brawl. However, I feel that Ike's moves are pretty different compared to Marth, and Marth is a very important character in the FE series, so I would not count him out, yet.

Ganondorf is too popular of a character to not make it in. I think he will be getting an original move set. I have always said that clone characters were not necessarily a lazy way of adding more characters to Melee, but it was an easy way. They have had lots of time to work with Brawl. This post certainly does not mean anything to Ganondorf's chances.

Now Roy is the only character I would say that is affected by today's update as you said. Not as popular or well known, he was a low tier fighter in Melee, Ike is the new powerful representative from FE. Things do not look good for Roy.... but I do not care. Ike looks way cooler anyway.

So there are your reasons why those characters should return.... except for Roy. I seriously think he is done for. But it is not confirmed, so all we can do is wait.....

Actually, I'd say Jigglypuff is kinda affected. Just like Ness, it was rumored that Sakurai didn't want to reuse her in Melee. And the argument that "all the original 8 will return" is now effectively wonky as well.

uhh, I think you might be pushing it too far there Fawriel. Of course the original 12 argument is wonky but did it have any stand ever? Sakurai never said all 12 would return and not enough smash games appeared for trasition to form...

Plus Sakurai actually said he wanted to replace Ness in melee, so he's been plotting on Ness since he made it into smash. The same is not so with Jiggly. I can get what your saying but those two are nowhere connected so we shouldn't try to connect them.

It seems pretty clear that Ness is not coming back. "There’s a character named Ness who has appeared in the Smash Bros. series up until now, and Lucas is very similar. They are from the same family of PK users."

"up until now"...

What makes me sad about this is that Lucas doesn't seem to use any weapons for his A-attacks like Ness did. I'll miss that yo-yo (the 64 one)...

On the plus side...Lucas is certainly much more of a mage-type player than Ness with all of his energy attacks...

I thought it would have been great if they gave Ness an all yoyo attack moveset. Alas, it looks like I won't be doing battle with yoyo's afterall :-(

Literal translation of いままで (ima made): Ima is now, Made is until. The translation "so far" is not very accurate and is often used as a stylistic choice by the translator. "Until now" is the best way to interpret imamade in this case. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I stand by what I said. Although, I have no idea how well-founded the rumor is that Sakurai wanted to replace Jigglypuff with Pit for Melee. Hence why I called it a rumor. But I guess it does have a lower standing than the Ness-Lucas "rumor", which... was actually said on an old Melee site? *scratches head*

And, I never said I believed in the argument that all the original 8 will return. It's silly to state it as a definite rule, but there were people who did, and those people can now pretty much be shut up.
I said it before and I'll say it again, Jiggly's seniority bonus isn't as significant as some people make it out to be. That's all.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Why, Ness, Why?

Please, Sakurai, tell me Ness is at least an alternate costume! He was my favorite character in Melee...

And he's way cooler than Lucas.

Id like to take this opportunity to rub it in vesperview's and cinder405's faces. who was right? I was. and yes I'm going to be a jerk about it because you two (mainly vesper) were jerks to me like "you're not sakurai" and "you can't be sure he's not playable" but I wasn't and I was (in that order) and I am right so bleh.

She is? Where did you find out? IF so then I'll be a very happy person! But, about what Fawreil said Sakurai never wanted to replace Jigglypuff with Pit. It was the other way around. Jigglypuff replaced Pit because of Popularity. Pit is definatly not as popular as Jigglypuff is.

O ya the inderview, I forgot about that.

I'd rather have Ness as a trophy than an alternate costume... it's just... so... shameful.

You know, lack of Ness is the only reason I really despise Lucas. If Brawl comes out & Ness is nowhere to be found... Lucas will raise to the ranks of Diddy Kong & Krystal as one of my most hated Smash Bros characters. Surely they have to include Ness? Even as a tribute to SSB64's original 12? I think Jigglypuff & Luigi will return... but Captain Falcon I'm not even sure about anymore...

Sakurai should have the honour to put in the original 12 :(

Ness... I can't believe he won't be joining us in Brawl. I figured Lucas would fight alongside Ness as another representative from Earthbound, not replace him. I never really used Ness but I surely did want to see him return. My condolences for you Ness supporters. I still hope he might return -- maybe as a complete remake?

This doesn't look good for Ness. :ohwell: Oh well, I guess Lucas is similar enough to Ness I'll get over it.

I dunno if you should count out Ness entirely yet. Just look at the characters here, if they are really going to keep clones from wasting roster space, Then maybe we'll get alternate costumes that actually change the way the character plays.

Think about it, we have Wario in the Warioware get-up, I'll be ****ed surprised if he doesn't get his orginal costume somewhere. if Dr. Mario shows up again I'm pretty sure he'll be an alternate costume as well. It's not like fighting games have never done this before.

Lucas is a color swap, a hat, and a couple animation tweaks away from being Ness, it's not too crazy to think that maybe Ness will indeed be an alternate costume, and yeah, some may consider that an insult, but if he still played the way he did, I don't see what the fuss is about, he'd still be in.

And no matter what, we won't know for sure till we get our greedy mits on the game.

Lucas is far from being similair to Ness.
He has 3 of the exact same moves as Ness. He IS Ness.
I don't know what the big deal is, Sakurai has no problem swapping them, because THEY ARE THE SAME.

EDIT: Lot's of characters have new movesets, Ness is no different. They took off his hat and called him Lucas, then got rid of the crappiness.

OMFG! :embarrass
3 **** moves! And that automaticly makes Ness the same to Lucas? :urg: Bull****!
As you can see in the update, Lucas is more physical than Ness.
May as well say Luigi is the same as Mario..... :ohwell:
