ok improvements as far as Ness go are as follows:

If they made Ness have moves similar to that of which he has in Earthbound, they have to rethink him completely. But if they stick with SSB Ness moves than altering should go like this:

PK Fire remains the same. Any arguments there?

PK Thunder should change all together in my mind. Maybe he could summon random bolts of lightning, just like Earthbound. Or if they keep the same controllable thunder, make it easier to control. Obviously this would require give-and-take. So maybe decrease its power to the length Ness moves upon contact.

PK Flash would be cool if it stayed true to Earthbound. It should cause little damage but blind all of the other characters. A pure status affect move would be awesome.

His shield should recover HP at a faster and higher rate than SSBM. And cooler graphics. Not a green bubble. I am thinking like a holographic box shield.

PK Thunder is fine, except make it better if you run it into yourself and then into another person. Also, do something different with PK Flash. It was basically worthless as it was.

Also, fix his stinkin' yo-yo. His usmash and dsmash were worthless...:(

I wonder though will Lucas be in it as well, but if Ness does come back, I hope he comes back like he was in SSB because in Melee he sucked, and Sakurai needs to do something about his yoyo which sucked

i disagree with ppl who say pk flash and upsmash are useless....

also how does this sound for an upgraded PK Thunder?:

The tail of the thunder never ends....keeps cmoing out of ness' head and basically writes in the air...i would enjoy that^_^

Also, the Franklin Badge update today helps confirm a little.

Ness did weild the Franklin Badge after it was given to him by Paula.

I don't think Lucas got the badge, but I really don't know.

So, its a Ness item, so I can safely predict he is returning.
Lucas did, indeed, wield the Franklin Badge. The Franklin Badge, being announced, makes it a good gamble for any of the MOTHER character's debut (or return) in Brawl. For me, I'm just happy MOTHER is confirmed in brawl! :) :chuckle:

I'll be unoriginal and also admire the picture of Ness with an updated look. I'm really looking forward to a new look. Sure, his concept artwork is a clay figure, but he looked kinda... deformed.

As for changes, as long as they don't completely change his moves to different stuff, buffing him is a simple thing.

In order to make him decent, give him good or at least okay grab range. The one thing that I think made him lousy in Melee is that he could rarely use his one big strength, his throws.

In order to make him good, his recovery should get more range. ...and what Simna said. That sounds fun. \o/
Also, the up- and down-smashes need to actually, like, smash.

I might as well speak up being an Earthbound fan and all.

I really don't know what to say about his special moves. Ness never did learn PSI Thunder, PSI Fire or PSI Magnet. Though at the same time, it's a crucial part of his moveset and playstyle. Another thing that bothers me is, where's PSI Rockin'? It's Ness' unique attack that only he could use. It's possible to combine PSI Thunder and PSI Flash so they could always do something with that and change his B-Up.

I don't want to sound like some narrowsighted casual player though. In all honesty, he could use a yoyo improvement. Sure he got nerfed coming from N64, but his aerial game is still decent. He needs telekentic grab range. Not like he needs to hold the enemy with his hands, right? But this was covered by others through out this topic.

I hope PSI Rockin' shows up in one form or another. If not his basic moveset, most definately his final smash. Though a funny final smash would be having Ness teleport someone to some far off location, beat the crud out of them with his bat, and then teleport their worn carcass back to the stage. That definately won't happen though. :p

In order to make him good, all they need to do is bring him back up to his SSB64 self.

Pretty much 64 self yeah...which includes better UpB survival range, better PSI Fire and better Up and Down Smashes...I personnally like the short grab range though...but true, it should be better because of who he is (telekenetic range grab and all)

My biggest complaint is the yoyo...It still works but...Not as well as it used to and not good enough...

yeah his yo- yo was horrible in melee. I want to see his new updated look. i'd hate if they took him out for Lucas. which im sure and hoping wont happen. Ness was so good in SSB64. I agree with Lunadis for the most part.

Too bad Ness sucks.

SHUT UP
I don't know why you think you're so cool telling everyone to shut up in big red letters, but you aren't.

Anyways I hope to see Ness return. He's a fun character to use from time to time.

Two things. I think it would be strange for them to replace a character that has been around since the beginning of the ss games with a clone. I could see Sakurai including Lucas, but most likely not as a clone and definitely not as a clone in place of ness. But thats just what I think. Oh and the other thing, his usmash was weak, but you can't forget the yo yo glitch :)

Did anyone actually ever manage to use the YYG in a competitive match? Seems about as useful to me as the Warlock Punch...
Not to mention that it's unlikely to reappear in Brawl...

And, I don't think it's weird... hell, in a way, it already happened. It's a different Link now.
Lucas and Ness almost look as similar. *scratches head*

I agree that its probably not gonna be in brawl (hopefully replaced with a better smash attack..) and I'm pretty sure that at least Simna has done it. I've done it a few times, but I don't know what you call a "competative match" I havn't done it in tourneys.

It's my humble opinion that every character from SSB64 should be in Brawl. There is no excuse for eliminating one of the characters that set the foundation for the game. Ness, Cap Falcon, Jiggles and Luigi are left for confirmation. They better be in it.

Since I've now seen the ending of Earthbound and Mother 3, I love Earthbound now, and can't wait to actually play the games. Now, as for the character on SSBB... I'm hoping they make him a bit.... smashier.

its my opinion that LOL YES YYG IS USEFUL

i use it quite often in matches in and out of tournaments
YES!!! I'm not alone!!! I love the YYGlitch. The trick is to only use it once or twice in a four stock battle. Totally throws the game off. "You just used the yoyo, gotta get the box, NOT THERE?" then again "You just used the yoyo, gotta get the box, NOT THERE?" then again "It's probably not there..." - baseball bat to the face. - or - backthrow off the cliff -
Maybe that just aplies to those who know how to "stop" the true effects of it...

If you ask me, Ness (or Lucas, hopefully not) will actually, "purposely" have ticks like that.

That's...not exactly what I meant^_^ I meant using it and getting it right, not shotgunning your yoyos until u get it to work.

Again, I'll say this, the Franklin badge means.....

A. Ness is in.

B. Lucas is in, which is also good since it would mean that Nintendo would have no excuse whatsoever to not bring Mother 3/Earthbound 2 to North American Shores (See: Fire Emblem series coming to America shortly after Marth and Roy were in SSBM)

C. Both are in.

Actually it means neither of those. It doesn't confirm ANYTHING.

Now I'm not saying that Ness or Lucas aren't in, I'm just saying that you can't make such assumptions.

OK, this will be the new official Ness discussion since there hasn't seemed to have been one yet. Assuming the mods don't lock this, just make all of your discussions about anything Ness-related in Brawl here. Sorry if this is duplicate or...something, but we've yet to have an official one.

Better?
hahahah man you kick *** and so does ness i hope he is in it he just needs to changed so that he can be like the n64 version i can't wait to see whtahis final smash will be

I like the cartoonish ness

@SSidna guy: you must've read that wrong...The guy saying "you just used the yoyo!" is the guy your fighting who's spending his time tjhinking about the glitch and getting rid of it. Then when you use it, they don't expect it...
sorry for the confusingly written paragraph lol

I used the glitch at the last tournament I went to. It didn't win me the tournament but it was a tangible experience none the less...

Ness had best be in, I'm 99% sure he will be...but that 1% of doubt looms large in my mind.

If Lucas is in, I needa play some Mother 3.

(Mother 2 = Earthbound too, btw, some people don't seem to know that)

Oh, and that picture SUXXX :confused::urg::grin:

I've always been a fan of low Tier Characters and Ness was my original main simply because I always used to use him in the first Smash. (Yes, I know he was cheap).

Ness in Melee was a character that took some getting used to. I still use him every once in a while, but he is by no means my main anymore. If used correctly though he does have some great combos he can dish out.

The only thing I didn't like was that they nerfed his recovery. It actually takes some skill to pull off, but only goes as far as fox's Up B Recovery. That always bothered me.

I'm all for him coming back though. I wouldn't mind Lucas either.

Cool, this is still around. Anyway, I was hoping for an Earthbound update this week, but I'm not sure if we get one. We've been waiting on Peach forever (since she was shown); we haven't seen anything Metroid-related in forever (yet to see a stage), and we have Earthbound and F-Zero just kind of lingering out there...

Then he just hits us with Trainer and Devil out of the blue. Who knows?

I do think you could shield them. As for reflecting them, well, that is a tough one. See, Samus' beam is larger than Fox, so what would he do, reflect a portion of it? Maybe they won't, cause it would give Ness players the upper hand when it comes to some Final Smashes... well, this is definitely something I'll try AT ONCE.

I hope Ness is fixed a little, too. I love Ness, he is really unique and fun to play. I would love to see more earthbound characters, but Lucas and Ness seem almost too similar - they are both little psychic boys, right? Flint sounds cool, he seems like he could have cowboy moves and such, so it could add some interesting flavors to the fight. I've not played or read much about Mother 3 though, aside from wikipedia.

My main concern with Ness is that his neutral B gets either tweaked or replaced for Brawl. It seems just a little too difficult to use successfully. I wouldn't mind seeing the PSI magnet get a little quicker, either.
