1) i cant seem to pull of dancing blades. i usualy only make it to 2 strokes, and i RARELY get to the end. also, if i try up or down, i end up doing dolphin slash or counter.

how do can i do it?

2) (to be announced as soon as question 1 is completed)

and then it cuts off at 1 or 2 strokes
You're probably doing it too fast, or too slow. Just practice it and find out the timing, it's not that hard. Try it slowly first, and then move up the speed until you can do it well and effectively.
Oh and use the "Ask a quick question, get a quick answer" thread for these things in the future.

What Backlash said. Dancing blade shouldnt be something that is an effort to do. If you cant DB after a while I wouldnt use Marth at all.

Go into training mode and just use the move for an hour until you find the timing and practice it.

sit in training mode until you have it down.

otherwise quit.

if you're giving up after an hour you don't have the dedication for marth.

Err. Dancing blade is probably one of the easiest things to pull off.....and it's vital to know if you ever want to play Marth. You're pressing it too fast or too slow. You can't just press side and B as fast as you can, and it should be 4 consecutive presses of the B button. Practice it. It should take like, 2 minutes to get this down. >_>

whatever feels right. Haha na jk. I usually use forward for the first three and then for the fourth i use up if I want a vertical kill at high % or down if i want to rack up damage. Up sets up for juggling too, which is especially good for marth. THats crazy that it was an effort to do dancing blade. What were you doing wrong?

normally people just have bad tempo and hit the button too fast.

i normally use the side combo for everything just to avoid accidently dolphin slashing or countering if i mess up. i use the up combo if my opponent is horrible in the air and then i proceed to juggle. the side combo also helps get them off the stage.

Are you playing melee? Like, seriously. I have trouble pulling it off there. And I use the side combo most of the time, but 4th hit down is good for poking/weakening shields and edgeguarding.

i never got it first time but its called dancing blades for a reason, you need to try and keep the timing.

lol, I use to have the same problem (not so much anymore) and you're just hitting the B button too fast. Just say "1 and 2 and 3 and 4" as fast as you can in your head, pressing B on each number. The and's should give you enough space in between button presses.

btw, my CPU Marth spams the first two hits of Dancing Blade all the time now because of how much I did that when I sucked or played online (online hurts the timing).

Dancing Blade only using the first 2 hits = you're mashing the B button too fast.

As for the order of dancing blade, I like mixing things up because it's just cool to see all the colors...
Nah, but in reality I use whatever for the first three, then finish with:
Red - When punishing
Blue - To set up for juggles
Green - To rack up damage or eat at shields

I don't think it's called Dancing Blade for that. It is because Marth is being gay and does a little dance with his sword.
Post like this make me wonder if homosexuals are significantly more intelligent than the average heterosexual/typical ignorant person.

*checks yes*

Or maybe since there are significantly more heterosexual people there is a higher chance of an unintelligent person being straight? I'd say thats more likely.

now number 2, how do you decide which direction for each strike of it you should use?
The 4th hit of DB is generally the most important. You'll almost always choose which direction to use based on who you're fighting though. For many characters, you'll use the Up direction because of the enemy's weak or laggy Dair. ROB is a good example of this. His Dair is laggy and makes him vulnerable to juggling. Most of a good Marth-game against ROB consists of Up-directed dancing blade combos. Snake is also someone you should be juggling.

Keep in mind, however, that the 4th hit up has less range than the 4th hit forward. At high percents, Up sometimes misses due to its short range. A solid hit is always better than a whiffed attack that may leave you vulnerable. You'll know which to use once you see how not-very-far the 4th hit up reaches compared to the 4th hit forward.

Down is generally used based on spacing rather than your opponent's character pick. It's multi-hit, so humans can DI out of it. Using Down when you're too far away or too close to the guy usually ends up with you hurt, assuming the guy DI's in the right direction.

Note: the 3rd hit directed Up sometimes sets up for a tipped 4th hit Up at low percents. Snake and ROB don't enjoy this.
