This is something I think it's time to share with everybody. I am NOT going to give a tl;dr. If you care, read it, if you don't, then don't.
As tons of people know, I love EarthBound. I own two copies of it, one which has never been opened. Ness is one of the greatest protagonists I've ever seen and I value him as a character dearly. EarthBound however, isn't why I main Ness at all. It's way more complicated than that. Please try to understand the situation.
When Smash first came out on the 64, I was so hyped. I saw Ness was in it and freaked out, not believing anybody really well, "cared" about the game he was from. Face it, tons of you guys had no idea who he was at all when you unlocked him. Well, when I did unlock him, I hated him. He was NOTHING like he was in EarthBound. I thought Nintendo ruined him actually. Crazy to think about huh?
Soon after, Melee came out, and I was pretty much not gonna use Ness whatsoever, because of Nintendo screwing him up. I then met someone very special to me. Someone who'd change who I mained forever. His name was Jason, my boyfriend.
We started dating a few years ago, around the time tons of stuff was being released for Brawl, but when Melee was popular. Jason used Melee Ness, and I definitely didn't get why. I told him:
"Why are you using Ness? He's horrible."
He said, "Ness? I thought you liked Ness? Y'know, you just don't like Ness because you don't really understand him. It's not Ness' fault for doing bad. If I do poorly with him, it's my own fault. Once you understand that, you'll know how to be an amazing player."
At the time, I thought he was just talking ****, and didn't think much of him. He even started using a tag (which he'd never done before of "Y1NK"). I asked him what it meant (considering he told me it wasn't a knock off of my own username), and he said, "You'll figure it out."
We continued to get excited for Brawl, and I continued to enjoy Dr. Mario, while he still kicked my butt with Ness. Did I suck? Probably so. Was he a good player though? I'd like to think he was.
A few months passed, and the worst possible scenario happened. Jason was killed in a car accident, and I saw it happen. Some of you might know what that feels like, but for those that don't, it's one of the worst feelings imaginable. Seeing the person you really care about dead...ugh, I hope it never happens to any of you.
Well, more time passed, Brawl was released, and I still had no desire to touch the game. It reminded me of him and it stung. But, eventually I picked up the game and decided maybe I really should reconsider using Ness. I came to the realization that he was right. It didn't matter how Ness was in the game...it was still Ness. I love EarthBound, and I decided I was going to start playing Ness not just for my own love of the series, but for the loss of a loved one.
THAT is why I main Ness. I know this is probably a more...interesting reason for picking a main, but for that I will never stop using him.
As for what "Y1NK" stands for, it took me until maybe 20 minutes ago to figure it out. The Yoshi mains were discussing it with me and one of them stated "You're 1". I went to Europe about 2 years ago. In that time, we had discussed who we were going to use in Brawl. I of course hated Ness, so I thought about using MetaKnight. Jason of course completely disagreed and wished for me to play who I loved. He sent me a letter while I was over there, after I'd told him I was going to main MK.
This is part of the letter (along with the generic "How is it over there? Are you homesick yet?" stuff): " "... yeah, so I don't think you should use MK. Otherwise, I'll end up being your one Ness knightmare. Haha, "knight"mare, get it?"
Do you see it? "Your 1 Ness Knightmare". Isn't that crazy? It might not mean much, but the fact it's so close to my name is amazing to me, and that it's another piece of him I get to carry with me.
Yeah so...that's why I like Ness so much, and what it means to me to play him and stick with him. I do it for someone I love, and for the love of the series. Hope this story wasn't a waste of your time.
