Ouch. I would not have minded Waluigi. Don't think he'll ever be playable unless he makes an appearance outside of spin offs. Poor guy needs his own game already. I still envision him having a weird puzzle game.

Does Mario have anything in his moveset to do with Mario sports spin-offs? No. I think not.

Those games are huge. They are a major part of the Mario franchise.

They deserve far more than just a golf club and a tennis racket in Peach's moveset to represent them in a playable status form.

And this is the first time that I've felt Sakurai's comments have been cold or harsh towards a character's inclusion.

I'm starting to realize I may have been too. I mean, if any more Mario characters are added to the roster, who could they be? Daisy? Bowser Jr.? A swarm of the eight Koopalings? Oh god... not... BIRDO?? Although I'd love them all as Assist trophies.

I really just hope they leave it at Rosalina for Mario's reps though.

I think this is just a warning to those who get caught up to much with speculation/get their hopes up to high rather than addressing a specific fanbase. This isn't the first time Sakurai has made warning about getting to attached/emotional.

Like Sakurai says, keep it clean people. I don't want to start handing out warnings/infractions.

I can agree with this. As a general rule, I'll feel worse for the fanbases whose characters had legitimate claims for getting in, beyond the character being 'cool' or 'representing' some small segment of a series or whatever. Toad was a good example of this, at least before those guys started that whole "Sakurai will change his mind and swap him out because things aren't final yet" phase.

The only people left in the Mario franchise who deserve playable status are Toad, Waluigi and Bowser Jr.

If you don't think Mario deserves any more reps. And can't see how each of them are important to different sides (Classic Titles, Sports Titles, Modern Era Titles) of that franchise. I don't know what to tell you.

Mario is the only franchise that deserves 8 reps. The only one. It IS Nintendo in so many ways.
