Rules:
  1. All posts and topics must stay within the Global Rules.
  2. Please stay on topic even while waiting for the next update. Instead take your discussions to the Smash 4 Social thread or, if it's specific character talk, to the Character Discussion thread.
  3. Please do not make Troll Updates.
If you have any questions or spot something that conflicts with the above rules please contact one of the staff members, or report the post in question. If you disagree with any actions of any of the staff members, please contact them privately, or go to Forum Support.

Sakurai's Newest Screenshot

Daily Pic Notice: The image above uses the daily pic link (http://www.smashbros.com/update/images/daily.jpg). Because the image for that link changes with every update, you should not use the daily pic link when posting the newest screenshot. Instead, you should either get a permanent link, via, Miiverse, or create one with an image hosting site, such as imgur. The reasoning for this is because if any users miss any of the screenshots, they could get very confused on what the image poster is talking about if a permanent link is not used.

Daily Pic Archive: 2014

The following archives all of Sakurai's screenshot posts in 2014. The screenshots are sorted from newest to oldest.

September

9/19

Pic of the day. Well, I'd better post some pictures from the Wii U version once in a while, right? We've brought back the Castle Siege stage from Fire Emblem!
  • Most of the games in the Fire Emblem series have a different unique setting and have fields without much height, so it was hard to narrow down what venues to focus on. Castle Siege and Colosseum are two stages that aren't exclusive to specific games in the franchise.

9/18

Pic of the day. We've improved the Fighter Records window to make it easier to browse through. I'm assuming you'll be building up your records fast once you start playing the game.

9/17

Pic of the day. Here's a glimpse of StreetSmash. Make sure to set this up once you get the game. The more fighters you play against at once, the more loot you can earn.

9/16

Pic of the day. These two are a haunting pair. You can only attack Gastly using items, but the Ghost has a perfect guard and reflects your attacks. When you see a Ghost, make sure you use your grab. If you're playing with Diddy Kong, his Monkey Flip should work, too.
  • Announcement: Originally, the pic of the day was only supposed to continue for about two months, but I've ended up posting pictures until even today. The 3DS version has already been released in Japan, so I would like to talk about how future posts will be handled.

First, I will not talk about hidden features until the game is released overseas. On the other hand, I definitely will talk about them after the game is released abroad.

In addition, I am planning to continue making posts at least until the Wii U version is released. I haven't decided if I'll go by the Japanese version release or the release of versions abroad, but the point is that I'll continue posting for a little bit longer.

Pic of the day won't focus on introducing new information anymore in the near future, but I hope to entertain you with interesting and funny photos like I originally intended to. Thanks.

9/15

Pic of the day. Now that the game is out in Japan, the Conquest mode will be available in online multiplayer in the Japanese version. This is what the title screen will look like for the overseas version. In this mode, the game aggregates global wins among specific teams during a limited time and determines the victor. If you choose a participating fighter from the With Anyone option, you'll automatically participate in Conquest. We'll be running Conquest in beta for a while.
  • Also, Conquest data where players seem to be losing on purpose will be removed from the calculations. And lastly, there's no point in working on this mode too much on your own, so don't overdo it…

9/12

Pic of the day. This is the World Status you can see in Spectator mode. The game isn't released yet so the map looks pretty plain now, but I wonder what it'll look like once it's out? Also, this is where you can see all sorts of stats being tallied up. In Group play and Spectator mode, you can see characters you haven't unlocked yet, so watch out if you don't want to be spoiled.
  • Even if you don't want to be spoiled, it might be wise to select the Online option at least once before you start the game. Your Global Smash Power won't appear until the first time you connect to the internet. Not only that, but there could potentially be a patch available that can resolve potential issues, like the one being released now for the Japanese version of the game. For the package version, updates can be pre-downloaded to your system even before you purchase the game, so make sure you look out for them.

9/11

Pic of the day. The hero from Pikmin 3, Alph joins the battle!! He has pretty much the same set skills as Olimar since he's basically just his variation. He can't use Rock Pikmin either.
  • They are different characters, so they each get their own title treatment on the character-selection screen. See? It says Alph.

9/10

Pic of the day. Users in Japan, you can now download the demo for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS! You can pick among 5 fighters with which to play. The stage is Battlefield, and the rules are fixed. There will be a few items and assist trophies available too. You can battle via local wireless, so have fun battling with your friends. For users outside of Japan, stay tuned for more news about the demo for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Screen shot is from Japanese version.
  • The only mode available on the demo version is Smash, but I also left open a feature called Tips. Just remember to tap that button. You'll figure the rest out once you do.

9/9

Pic of the day. In Classic mode, a roller spins before every stage to determine your reward. Rewards in red are for customization, green ones are trophies, and yellow means precious gold. Of course, if you raise the intensity, the abundance of these rewards will increase quite a bit, too. You can be rewarded in every stage, so in that way this mode might be a little more generous compared to previous games in the series.
  • And here's the results screen. It shows what you gained in each stage, but you won't be rewarded until you clear it all. If you mess up in the middle, you can lose some of them too. The fighter icons are special attacks, and icons like the shield are equipment. The icons that say Mii on them are hats and clothes for Mii characters. Icons that show characters on a stand are trophies, of course, and the coins are gold you earned.

9/8

Pic of the day. This is what the view looks like within the Vault. YourTrophies collection will start off with one randomly selected trophy. In your Album, you can view pictures you've taken of fighters posing. Photos taken with the 3D Depth Slider on will take photos in stereoscopic 3D, and photos will be in 2D when they're taken with that feature turned off.

9/5

Pic of the day. So what is this Games & More option in the menu? I assume that some people may use this mode the most.
  • This is what you see after you click on Games & More. There are many modes to choose from. There's the Options button, too.
  • Futhermore, this is what the screen looks like after you click on Solo. In the Stadium, you can find the Home-Run Contest, various Multi-Man Smash challenges, and Target Blast!

9/4

Pic of the day. Here's one of the final battles in Smash Run, called "Run!" As you'd expect, it involves you dashing toward the finish line. In general, the fighters who are fast by default, equipped with speed-boosting equipment, and powered-up with speed boosts over the course of that Smash Run will have the advantage. However, speed isn't the only factor that will determine who will be victorious...
  • Those red things in the picture are called danger zones, and if you touch one, you'll get penalized by respawning farther back in the stage!! The danger zones disappear after someone else touches them, so fighters following those in the lead will have an advantage. You can still find speed boosts throughout the stage, so it'll be a heated battle 'till the end!!
  • Here's another final battle called "Climb!" Obviously, those that can jump or fly higher will have the advantage, but they also have to avoid the danger zones!! It gets pretty challenging if you've boosted your speed too much, as well. Everyone really gets into this when playing multiplayer.

9/3

Pic of the day. Until now, you were only able to choose from four, or sometimes five or six colors for each character. This time, though, all characters have eight colors to choose from! The first four color schemes for Samus are based off her Varia Suit, Fusion Suit, Gravity Suit from Super Metroid, and the Dark Suit.
  • …And here she is in the color schemes of the Gravity Suit from Metroid Prime, Green Samus (a regular in the Smash series), the Light Suit, and Dark Samus. A total of eight colors.
  • You can choose between four male and four female Villagers to play with. The designs for their faces and clothes are different. And here are the four Villagers we haven't shown you yet.

9/2

Pic of the day. This time, you can challenge every fighter in All-Star Mode from the moment you turn on the game!! This is a survival battle with limited recovery items and no option to continue. However, this mode will be incomplete until you've unlocked every fighter... Until then, you can only play against characters that are already available. This is a picture of the bottom-screen menu, with a padlock indicating that the mode is still incomplete.
  • In these battles, multiple opponents appear in one stage, and you clear the battle by defeating a number of them. The rest area that appears between battles displays the next opponents and the year the characters made their first appearances, and it also holds recovery items and an occasional reward. The characters you fight against appear pretty much in chronological order. Behold, the history of Nintendo games!!

9/1

Pic of the day. The legendary hero Riki appears as an Assist Trophy and in Shulk's Final Smash!! As an Assist Trophy, he uses many arts like Happy Happy, Freezinate, and Yoink! He sounds a bit like Tingle…but don't worry, Tingle will make an appearance too.
By the way, a cursor will appear above Assist Trophies and Pokémon to indicate which fighter is its ally. Now you can tell right off the bat who it belongs to!!

August

8/29

Pic of the day. The mysterious fighting teams that appear in the Smash Bros. series come in many shapes and sizes, but this time even we don't know what all of them will look like! It's said that they copy faces from Mii characters saved on your system and attack in a large throng…!! But wait, they all have big smiles on their faces. Looks like they're having a good time, so show no mercy and launch them all away!!

Pic of the day. From Xenoblade Chronicles, Shulk joins the battle!! He's not the type of character that would usually appear in the Smash Bros. series, but we worked really hard to make it happen. We're very happy with how he turned out. This stage is Gaur Plain.
  • Shulk's sword, the Monado, slashes enemies with a beam when activated, so it can strike from long range. What really makes this weapon unique is that when the Monado Arts are activated, it can change Shulk's features and abilities! Emerge victorious in battle by changing your abilities strategically!!

8/28

Pic of the day. Customize your characters in the Custom section. It sounded better to customize "characters" instead of "fighters," so that's what we went with. There are various ways to customize, but make sure you remember to set up the powers you're bringing with you before playing a round of Smash Run.

8/27

Pic of the day. A panel in the Challenges area will unlock everytime you clear a challenge. When you unlock a panel, you'll see hints for unlocking panels directly adjacent to it on all sides. And this time, each panel will unlock pictures related to the challenge. This is tougher than it looks, you know? The challenges in the 3DS version are a little on the easy side, but the Wii U version challenges might be a bit trickier.

8/26

Pic of the day. Spectator Mode is available even on the compact 3DS version!! In this mode, you can watch players all around the world fight and make bets with in-game gold. Wager wisely by checking out the player names, rules, win rates, odds, fighters, and stage!!
  • Being able to cheer someone on is what really makes spectating matches fun. This time, 1st and 2nd place will get prizes in four-player matches, and spectators can bet the gold they win on Bonus Chances.

8/25

Pic of the day. In Classic mode, you challenge multiple stages en route to a climactic final battle. The more gold you put onto the Fiend's Scale, the harder the battles will be. In return, your rewards will get better and more abundant. The best way to earn gold fast is to win Classic battles on higher intensity.
  • In Classic mode, you can choose your next challenge on the route map. Looks like Master Hand is waiting at the end, but perhaps something might change if you raise the intensity…?!

8/22

Pic of the day. The 3DS version has an excellent Sounds collection! The design looks nice for a sound test screen, doesn't it? The font color for the "Remix" text on remixed songs comes in pink or white. The pink ones are songs arranged for this version of Super Smash Bros., while the white ones are remixes made in earlier Smash Bros. games. This means there are reoccuring songs from past releases.
  • Choose your songs and play with features on the bottom screen. You can listen to character voices, too. One of the new highlights for this feature is the "Play in Sleep Mode" option in the upper right. If you turn this on, you can listen to the tracks with your headphones even when your Nintendo 3DS is closed. The L and R Buttons will let you skip tracks. This means you can use it as a portable music player. Enjoy listening to the tracks you love by putting all songs in loop, shuffle, or selecting your favorite tracks!!
  • In Smash Run, the background music plays randomly from the songs you select from the track list. This means you can customize your own song lineup!! Usually each stage has two tracks-which makes for a lot of songs on its own-but as a bonus, we've added more songs for you to enjoy in Smash Run and in the Sounds area.
  • By the way, here's another music announcement!! You can now listen to some of the tracks on the official website. We're planning to add more tracks a little at a time, so stay tuned.
    www.smashbros.com

8/21

Pic of the day. "No, I'll just beat you within an inch of your life!" Demon Lord Ghirahim makes an appearance in Smash Bros!! He's an Assist Trophy, so he could conceivably back up Link, too.

8/20

Pic of the day. The treasure chests that appear in Smash Run are very important. Not only do they give you stat boosts, but they also give you custom parts (the bag on the right) and Smash Run powers (the bag on the left). You should pick these up and use them in the next battle!!
  • …However, watch out for Mimicuties disguised as treasure chests. Run away! RUN AWAY!!

8/19

Pic of the day. Looking at the number of days we have left for development, it would be an impossible task to create this… That's what I told my staff. But thanks to the determination of her female designer, these Zero Suit outfits got completed in time. From the ending of Metroid: Zero Mission, here's Samus in shorts!
  • Here's a look at the 3DS version. You can use the same outfit variations in both the 3DS and Wii U versions
.

8/18

Pic of the day. Nightmare Wizard appears as an Assist Trophy! He will engulf the stage in darkness, and fighters will need to brawl blindly for a while. Look out for the effect before it goes dark, and play it to your advantage. Blinding and reversal effects even make the computer players mess up.
8/15

Pic of the day. Here's the place you equip powers for Smash Run. Pack a good mix of them like a lunch box, and off you go! You can change how your powers are set up by touching their icons and dragging them.

8/14

Pic of the day. Here's Beat! And Plant Barrier!! These are some of Mega Man's custom special moves. You might also be able to use some signature boss-like moves from the Mega Man series, too.

8/13

Pic of the day. "Looks like there was an impostor in the earlier posts, so I introduced him to my sword!" ...I'll leave it up to your imagination if he really said that or not. The veteran hero, Meta Knight, returns to battle!! We didn't forget the Battleship Halberd either!!
  • Meta Knight's Up Special Move, Shuttle Loop, changed quite a bit in this game. The glide is gone, and the attack slashes opponents twice while spinning in a large loop. This has turned into a highly technical and effective move.

8/12

Pic of the day. If you manage to raise this Special Flag for long enough, an additional KO count will be added to your score in a time match, or you'll get an extra stock for a stock match. When this appears on the stage, the fight for the flag becomes a fierce battle of tactics, which makes things pretty interesting.

8/11

Pic of the day. "Hello! I'm Samus, the intergalactic bounty hunter!" "And I am Meta Knight, joining the battle!!"

8/7

Pic of the day. Here's the trophy gallery for the 3DS version. You can rotate the trophies by drawing circles on the bottom screen. Super Smash Bros. Brawl had tons of trophies, but rumor has it that the 3DS version alone may have more than Brawl. Looks like the Dr. Wily that we made from scratch for the 3DS version is on his knees in disbelief.
  • Here's something new--the trophy shop. If you're having a hard time getting certain trophies, why not just buy them? They sometimes go on sale, too.

8/8

Pic of the day. "♪Ba-ding!♪"
  • If you turn on the 3D effect, it really looks like there's a Game Boy inside the screen.

8/6

Pic of the day. Victini and Xerneas are both support Pokémon. Victini's Victory Star boosts the attack of whoever throws the Poké Ball, and also prevents flinching. Xerneas's Geomancy increases the launch power of all fighters, but exceptionally raises it for whoever had the Poké Ball.

8/5

Pic of the day. Look at these three radiant pieces... Yup, you guessed it! It's another combinable item like the Dragoon-the Daybreak.
  • This is what it looks like when all three parts are combined together. How powerful will its beam blast be? FYI, you can fire shooting items while moving backward and forward. Change direction by flicking the Control Stick or Circle Pad toward the back of the fighter.

8/4

Pic of the day. In this Smash Bros. installment, this little guy is also making an appearance! I…don't know his name, but he's the Prince of the Sablé Kingdom. He's from the Game Boy game Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (translated as The Frog For Whom the Bell Tolls), which was only released in Japan.
  • Here's the trophy of the Sablé Prince. He transforms into a snake or a frog, and unloads multiple attacks on any opponent he catches. Keep attacking your foes when they're trapped in his dust cloud.

8/1

What's up with this bomb? This looks like the stadium for the Home-run Contest, but there's no bat. Once you touch the bomb, it begins to count down. Give it enough damage and launch it at the right time…then once the bomb's countdown hits zero…!!
  • ...It goes BOOOOOM! Not only will the blast destroy targets, but it'll also cause a chain reaction by using shattered walls and bomb blocks--all of which contributes to you getting a high score!! This is a new activity that combines the concepts of Target Smash and the Home-run Contest--it's called Target Blast! Your final score is the total you rack up over two rounds. Of course, your Target Blast scores contribute to your Global Smash Power, too.

July
7/31

Pic of the day. Reshiram appears on one of the stages in the 3DS version! Zekrom and Milotic will appear, too. It's close enough to the launch date, so I don't have to describe this stage to you, right? The design of this stage is based off of the surroundings of someone's castle.

7/30

Pic of the day. If you get caught in the Boss Galaga item's tractor beam, it will carry you away to the top of the screen. You can shoot it down, but it won't join you in battle for double the firepower.

7/29

Pic of the day. For the first time ever in the Super Smash Bros. series, here's a Paper Mario stage! It's made of paper, so strong winds will blow it away.

    • Since the stage is paper, it transforms when it folds over and opens up again. This ship is the S.S. Flavion from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

7/28

Pic of the day. I, Takamaru, have waited many years to appear in Super Smash Bros.! Link, Samus, Pit, and I debuted in the same year! Multidirectional Pinwheel Knife Rook Attack!! (FYI, I'm an Assist Trophy.)

7/25

Pic of the day. For the first time ever, I present to you…the main menu for the 3DS version!! The icons are even animated. The design concept may look similar if you've played other games I've worked on. But we had a hard time making this one because…

    • The bottom screen displays pictures matching each mode! This was quite a task for the UI (User Interface) designers, but they made it happen. Kudos to them! You can tap the screen to look up additional info like how to play--complete with diagrams.

7/24

Pic of the day. This is the Tomodachi Life stage that's exclusive to the 3DS version! The front walls of the apartments disappear so you can see the area within when a fighter overlaps with the room. The rooms are randomly placed and selected from among several types. Planting an X Bomb behind a wall might be an effective tactic.

    • You might run into a Mii living in the room! The Mii characters are taken from the data in your 3DS system, so you could find your friends living in the apartments.

7/23

Pic of the day. In general, there are completely different stages in the 3DS and Wii U version, but we made Wily Castle and the special boxing ring available for both versions! We didn't forget the Yellow Devil either. There may be some small differences in the stages, such as the 3DS stage appearing to be during daylight hours.

7/22

Pic of the day. Here's the Great Fox from Star Fox: Assault. I wonder what missions it will conduct. It'll probably have fighters running around on top of it without the pilot's consent.

7/21

Pic of the day. Robin's Nosferatu is the first ability in the Smash Bros. series that recovers your damage as it gives damage to others. The attack becomes even stronger if you strike from behind! Robin doesn't actually use this ability in the original game, but we added that element to make the character unique. Who knows--the ideas we use in this game may contribute to the original series.

7/18

Pic of the day. Here's a Screen K.O. shot. There are also patterns where players will disappear into the sky for Star K.O.s, but as a match's time limit approaches, those K.O.s will not occur anymore.

7/17

Pic of the day. We have Nintendogs plus cats! How could we forget them!! Just FYI, there are about five dog breeds in this game. This was me, reporting from the 3DS-exclusive stage, Living Room.

7/16

Pic of the day. The Levin sword and tomes are Robin's life lines. The Levin sword can be activated by using smash attacks--you can even activate these moves in midair! However, just like in the original game, the Levin sword can be used only a limited number of times before it breaks, at which point it takes some time to regenerate. When the Levin sword is unavailable, Robin fights using the bronze sword.

    • The way Robin launches Arcfire is kind of crazy—he or she calls down a bolt of flame from above, then launches a pillar of fire! By the way, Robin’s tome changes with each special attack.

7/15

Pic of the day. Along with Robin, Lucina joins the battle!! Her physical ablilites are identical to Marth's--it must be in her D.N.A. However, where Marth's power is concentrated in the tip of the sword, Lucina's attack strength is balanced throughout the weapon, which might make her easier to control. She's also a little bit shorter than Marth.

    • With the Wii Fit Trainers, the male and female Robins, the Villagers, and Little Mac, varying their appearances and voices works just like selecting alternate color variations. However, whenever there is even a small difference in abilities, that character gets an actual roster slot. That is why you can select Lucina individually.
    • By the way…there's probably no chance you'll be able to see this in the game, but Lucina has the mark of Naga in her left eye.

7/14

Pic of the day. Robin, the avatar in Fire Emblem Awakening, joins the battle!! As a master of tomes and the Levin sword, Robin's not like any other swordfighter. You can also select Robin's gender when you play.
  • And welcome back, Captain Falcon!! When are you ever getting a new game of your own?

Pic of the day. In order to make Rayman's trophy, we asked Ubisoft to share their references. We were expecting to receive 2D drawing references for Rayman, but to our surprise, they sent us data of a brand new 3D model that they rendered for this game!! And that was how this trophy was created. It takes a lot of work creating each model, so it's wonderful that the creators contributed their own efforts!!

7/11

Pic of the day. Pac-Man's up taunt is known as Namco Roulette! Namco characters from the 1980s will randomly appear.

    • See? There's a variety of characters. Huh? One of them looks pretty recent.

7/10

Pic of the day. The character farther in the back isn't from the Imperial forces, and the character in the front is not the infamous drum-playing puppet in Osaka. No, Mario is actually wearing an outfit from Family Computer Golf: U.S. Course! NES Open Tournament Golf might be a more familiar title.

7/9

Pic of the day. Just like in the original game, the Dark Emperor can cause status changes based on a fighter's color. Red types generally get powered up. On a different subject, the Mii Fighter is wearing a Mii Force Helmet.

7/8

Pic of the day. I talked about an attack with a far reach in yesterday's post, but it didn't compare to Palutena's up smash attack! No joke, it reaches really far. It reached so far in this shot that even the rocketbarrels got blown up.

    • That said, if we're talking just about range, even that can't beat Palutena's power, Heavenly Light. It has quite a damage field. However, this is a no-flinch attack, which means the opponents won't react to the damage!

7/7

Pic of the day. The Mii Gunner's side smash attack may have the farthest reach of all the side smashes…as should be expected from a firearms expert!! Looks like the attack missed this time, though.

7/4

Pic of the day. Pac-Maze is a stage exclusive to the 3DS version, created in the Pac-Man motif. If you eat 100 Pac-Dots, Power Pellets will appear in your color.

    • If you eat a Power Pellet, the monsters will become vulnerable and you can defeat them just by touching them. An important point is that the monsters will become vulnerable only on your screen, which means that they can still damage your opponents!! This is one of the unique game features only possible in the 3DS version.

7/3

Pic of the day. Mega Man.EXE and Mega Man Volnutt!! They only appear for a split second, but the modeling is so detailed. And if that's the case…!

    • ...How can we not use it for trophy creation?! Today's update is a rare mix of Wii U and 3DS images in the same post.

7/2

Pic of the day. The Mii Gunner in his suit. Looking sharp! The arm cannon's design will change depending on the outfit, but the attacks and projectiles will be the same.

7/1

Pic of the day. The pink sweatshirt looks really cool on Little Mac, so you can use that outfit in this game… How can a pink sweatshirt look so cool?

    • Looks like some of you noticed that this version of Little Mac wasn't shown at E3. There are many things, like Link's Skyward Sword tunic design I posted earlier, that haven't been revealed yet.

June
6/28

Pic of the day. Here's a Poppant, an enemy that appeared in the previous game in this series. Poppants will appear in Smash Run, scampering around as they drop a variety of items.

    • There are other bonus characters that appear in this game, too. Here's an Iridescent Glint Beetle from the Pikmin series. Keep hitting it!! Keep hitting it for gold!!

6/27

Pic of the day. Some of the physical characteristics of Miis get carried over when you use them as Mii Fighters. The smaller ones become speed fighters and the bigger ones are more akin to power fighters.

6/26

Pic of the day. Here's Nabbit, who appears in the Mushroom Kingdom U stage. You can't see him, but Luigi is inside Nabbit's bag.

6/25

Pic of the day. The all-time classic Balloon Fight returns to the modern age, now playable with four players. This is only a small piece of this jam-packed game.

6/24

Pic of the day. Here's Link in an outfit based on his ordinary clothes in Skyward Sword! The art style looks a little different, but the actual clothing model is still his usual tunic.

6/23

Pic of the day. Is this a match made in heaven? Remember, no matter how big you may be, there is always someone bigger.

6/20

Pic of the day. Here's Donkey Kong's third standard special attack, Storm Punch!! Thanks to the customization options, each fighter is stocked with 12 different special moves. The number of attacks is pretty appalling.

    • We've made it so that customization options, including special attacks, will be disabled when you're playing online in With Anyone mode. After all, we have to think about game balance, and it's crucial for anonymous players to be able to use reliable tactics against one another. When you're playing in single player, battling with friends online, or playing locally, you're free to play however you want--with or without customization.
6/19

Pic of the day. Pac-Man's standard special move, Bonus Fruit. As you charge this move, the bonuses will change, and all of them have different characteristics and movement patterns when thrown. The bonuses cycle in the same order as in the original game, and the charge-up period doubles once you cycle beyond the orange.

6/18

Pic of the day. Here's a new mini-game that's quite a bit different from Coin Launcher in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's called Trophy Rush! The details…will be kept secret for now.

6/17

Pic of the day. Here's Dr. Eggman's machine, Eggrobo. It'll appear as a guest character in Smash Run and attack you with laser beams.

6/16

Pic of the day. Here are some weapons the Mii Swordfighter can use: Shurikens of Light, Chakrams, and Gale Strikes. You can control the direction the Chakram is thrown, or even make it stall in midair. The Chakram is also the only one of these tied to the side special move, so you can use one of the other items consecutively with this one.

6/13

Pic of the day. This is quite a line-up of characters for the gaming world. I mean, it's amazing enough that Mario can fight Pikachu. I hope you enjoy this truly unique celebration!!

6/12

Pic of the day. The goddess is up to bat for the Home-run Contest, a returning mini-game on the 3DS version! It's been streamlined with added features here and there, like sturdier glass and doubled speed for long hits. You can also have fun comparing your rankings for this mini-game with your Global Smash Power.

6/11

Pic of the day, and a surprise announcement. A milestone of video-game history--PAC-MAN joins the battle! He's even older than Mario!!
  • How does he fight? Check out the Super Smash Bros. official website for more details. (www.smashbros.com)

6/10

Pic of the day. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is a game where you collect tons of coins. Thus, it's only natural that many coins will appear in this stage… Wait, is this really Super Smash Bros??

    • If you collect 100 coins, you transform into a gold fighter! For a short period of time, your attack power will increase and you won't flinch when you receive attacks. This unique stage's name is Golden Plains and it's exclusive to the 3DS version.

Posting at a not-so-typical time of the day.
An announcement has been made at E3: Mii Fighters are joining the battle!! "You can fight--anyone can fight!"

    • And Palutena is joining the battle! She's using a lot of powers in the video we released, but these are only a few of the powers featured in Kid Icarus: Uprising. For more details, check out the Super Smash Bros. official website.
      www.smashbros.com)

6/9

Pic of the day. Remember the video that introduced Greninja joining the battle? Every Pokémon that appeared in that video will make some kind of appearance in Super Smash Bros! By the way, here's one of the Pokémon that didn't make an appearance in that video--Meloetta. Its vocal attacks reflect off land forms, so they'll be especially effective in a closed environment.

6/6

Pic of the day. Here's Ike, Marth and…a brand-new stage!

    • We've added a familiar setting from the Fire Emblem series, the Coliseum. In the original game, this place is filled with both hope and despair. There is machinery in the ground that activates variable platforms.

6/5

Pic of the day. Brewster brings The Roost back to Smash Bros. Nothing beats watching a battle of famous fighters with a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

6/4

Pic of the day. Here's a new item that we've thrown in--the boomerang. As you'd guess, it'll fly back into your hands after you throw it, and if you keep catching it, its attack power grows with each throw! However, opponents can nab the boomerang out of the air, so it might be an easier item to use in Smash Run.

6/3

Pic of the day. Some stages have been shrunk down and made into trophies, like this one of Tortimer Island for the 3DS version. I wish I could have a figurine like this in real life.

6/2

Pic of the day. Here's a new Wii U stage, Mushroom Kingdom U! It brings to life the worlds of New Super Mario Bros. U.

    • When Kamek casts a spell, the stage transforms drastically! That said, this is not what you would call a moving stage…
…By the way, this stage will be playable in the demo version of the game for E3, a game expo that starts on June 10 in Los Angeles.

May
5/30

Pic of the day. Here's a first look at the bottom-screen display for the Nintendo 3DS. Your name will appear in the area above the accumulated damage. And if you tap one of the fighter displays…!

    • …You can highlight that fighter on your screen. This is useful when you want to get back at a particular opponent. You can also highlight yourself if you need to keep better track of where you are. This is a great benefit to having your own individual screen.

5/29

Pic of the day. You can charge up Ike's Eruption attack by holding the button down, but remember to release it right before it fully charges to avoid recoil damage. Let go of the button at the moment the sword shines!

5/28

Pic of the day. Characters that have heavy damage slowly start to emit steam. When your opponent starts to get nice and smoky, give 'em a solid attack!

5/27

Pic of the day. The rocket belt from Pilotwings lets you fly upward by jumping. This is a really useful item for characters that have weaker recoveries. By the way, is that cape fireproof?

5/26

Pic of the day. Here's a look at the revival platforms. The color of the bottom mechanism changes from yellow to red to warn you how much time you have left before you drop into the fray.

5/23

Pic of the day. Ike, the swordsman of magnificent strength, joins the battle!! Strike your foes down with his powerful smash attacks.

    • For this game, Ike's design is based on the hero that appears in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. His sword deals heavy damage in Smash Bros., so this design suits him very well! Rest assured, he can use Aether as well.

5/22

Pic of the day. In previous games in the series, if you chose the red team in a team battle, your Mario would have been red. But now you can choose any color you want! The color outlining the characters will show their team affiliation.

5/21

Pic of the day. The leg and arm positions of some characters will automatically be mirrored when facing left or right. Mario, for example, will have his chest shown in the foreground regardless of whether he's facing right or left. This was quite a tedious task, but thanks to it we can show the best features of each character even better.

    • Here's another example: in the previous games, you saw the back of Kirby's head when facing left. Now Kirby looks great from any angle.

5/20

Pic of the day. This is the capsule for the Assist Trophies. It may emit rainbow-colored lights, or even blink. Even if there's something like a Color TV-Game 15 inside….

5/19

Pic of the day. Under certain circumstances, the creatures on this planet appear to grow larger and go berserk. The Pikmin and I must be cautious lest we lose our heads to these beasts.

5/16

Pic of the day. You can choose to play as the girl villager too!! How lovely.

5/15

Pic of the day. The unexpected Assist Trophy, the TV-Game 15! Color TV-Game 15 is a home entertainment system that was released in 1977 in Japan before the release of Space Invaders. This is the oldest game to join the Smash Bros. series.

    • Normally, controllers for these types of games had knobs with variable resistors--these allowed the players to control in-game movement by how far they twisted the knobs. The TV-Game 15 used microswitches instead. We've worked a little too hard to reenact the behavior of the original, so the paddles always move in linear paths with the same, consistent speed. We pay attention to such peculiar details!
5/14

Pic of the day. Here's one of my personal favorites, the trophy of Brittany from Pikmin 3. She won't be joining the battle, but her model and expression is well-designed.

5/13

Pic of the day. Here's Charizard's new special attack, Flare Blitz. It's a very powerful attack--however, you'll take recoil damage if you make contact. Pretty true to the original game, huh? Flare Blitz is Charizard's side special move, and Rock Smash is the down special move.
  • And here's Mega Charizard X. This will appear as Charizard's Final Smash.

5/12

Pic of the day. Here's wire frame Little Mac--re-envisioned from the original Punch-Out!! game. The man that actually drew the pixel art wire frame in the original was none other than Shigeru Miyamoto. He said he drew the pixels for the wire frame on graph paper.

5/9

Pic of the day. Uniting three parts will complete the legendary Air Ride machine…the Dragoon! It's back! But we didn't just leave it the way it was, and added some nice touches to the design of the targeting screen. It is, of course, in stereoscopic 3D on the 3DS.
  • Just the target screen felt lacking so here's a pic of the Dragoon itself. I wanna get on it. I wanna get on and ride it.

5/8

Pic of the day. Bullet Bill here is an item. Can you guess what happens when you use it?
  • Answer: You turn into Bullet Bill and go full speed ahead!

5/7

Pic of the day. Fight! The Wonderful 100!! We also made trophies of some of the other Wonderful Ones.

5/6

Pic of the day. Members of the Enemies That Love to Hide Association, here are Octorok and Met. Calmly grab them while they're ducking.

5/5

Pic of the day. You can get up on the lights of this special ring. It's a perfect secret hiding place.
  • And you can attack the lights and have them fall to the ground! That makes things dark. The lights are way up high, but even Little Mac can get up there by jumping off the ropes.

5/2

Pic of the day. We didn't introduce ALL of the Assist Trophies in the Smash Bros. Direct. Here's Dillon from Dillon's Rolling Western!! He may rival Sonic in the art of rolling.
  • Pic of the day. This is his trophy. He may be an animal, and his buckles are definitely on the adorable side, but there's no denying he looks cool!! His Assist Trophy can even do things like a quick charge.

5/1

Pic of the day. The menacing foe, Orne! It inflicts devastating damage--it's even more powerful than the Ultimate Chimera in the last game. RUNNN!!

April
4/30

Pic of the day. With the Super Leaf, any fighter can have ears and a tail. You can also float in the air by pressing the jump button. We're still figuring out whether you'll be able to attack with the tail...

4/29

Pic of the day. Tether recovery? Yes, you can! And from even longer range than before. Multiple fighters can latch on--who actually grabs hold is determined by the same rules as the standard ledge grab.

4/28

Pic of the day. The Assist Trophy, Midna! This is the 3DS version. She's going to grab and throw things all over the place. Her uncontrollable, whimsical nature remains intact.

4/25

Pic of the day.
MegaMan.EXE!
X!
Mega Man!
Mega Man Star Force!
Mega Man Volnutt!
The Mega Man legends, united.

4/24

Pic of the day. Yoshi's Egg Throw now leaves a rainbow trail, and we've improved the pose Samus strikes when she fires the Paralyzer. Every staff member is working hard as we brush up whatever we can.
4/23

Pic of the day. Don't eat him. You can't eat him.

4/22

Pic of the day. Here's a special stage exclusive to the 3DS version, Balloon Fight!! The stage loops on the left and right sides so you can walk off one side and appear on the other.

4/21

Pic of the day. For the first time in the Smash series, Beam Swords will feature graduated colors. The attack item on the left is the Fire Bar. This is a peculiar weapon that becomes shorter after each swing.

4/18

Pic of the day. The 3DS version will have roughly the same types of Assist Trophies and Pokémon. Just roughly…

4/17

Pic of the day. Tac (on the left) steals your charged power. If you've charged up a lot, he might steal a ton of it. Chase after him quickly to get it back!!

4/16

Pic of the day. Ready now? Together with me!

4/15

Pic of the day. This is the final destination version of Gerudo Valley. No more surprise visits from Koume and Kotake, and the bridge is gone. There are no distractions and there's nowhere to run. And the score that plays in the background is "Gerudo Valley."

    • You can make most stages turn into a final destination. Depending on the stage, it might be floating in midair or perched on a cliff.
4/14

Pic of the day. Here's a very, very new fighter in the upcoming Smash games, Greninja. Greninja's sophisticated moves are extremely fun to use once you get used to how it controls!

    • The side special attack Shadow Sneak is a move that makes Greninja suddenly disappear and ambush opponents. If you press and hold the button, Greninja will move a greater distance. Another unique feature is you can move Greninja around freely while charging up.
4/11

Pic of the day. Your character starts a Smash Run as a relatively ordinary fighter. But before the game, you can outfit yourself with certain items that can help power you up early, which will give you a big advantage later on!! These items are much like the Powers you'd find in Kid Icarus: Uprising.
  • For those who are wondering what Smash Run is, check out the Super Smash Bros. Direct. You can find the link on the post two days before this one.

4/10

Pic of the day. Samus and Zero Suit Samus!! How will she match up with her new jet boots?

4/8

On 4/8, at 3 PM PST (8/4 11 PM UK time), we'll be airing a Super Smash Bros. Direct!! There will be all kinds of info about the new Smash Bros. games on this simultaneous global stream that will be delivered "directly" to you, so don't miss it! It's airing at a really late time for some of you, but it'll probably be worth the wait. You can watch the stream from the official site (www.smashbros.com).

4/7

Pic of the day. An insatiable, unidentified extraterrestrial is targeting a certain peaceful town…!

4/4

Pic of the day. Hello fighters! I'll assist you with fresh-picked fruit from my town!♪

    • Congratulations on your appearance Isabelle! I also have another important announcement. On 4/8, at 3 PM PST (8/4 11 PM UK time), we'll be airing a Super Smash Bros. Direct!! There will be all kinds of info about the new Smash Bros. games on this simultaneous global stream that will be delivered "directly" to you, so don't miss it! You'll be able to watch the stream from the official site (www.smashbros.com).
4/3

Pic of the day. Pikachu's Thunder now starts off with a thundercloud that deals a Meteor Smash! From left to right, you can see this combo starting with Pikachu throwing the opponent upward, Meteor Smashing with the lightning strike, and then directly attacking. Foes can dodge, of course, so the attack won't hit consistently, but when it does, it sure feels good!

4/2

Pic of the day. The Gust Bellows can blow opponents away with its powerful wind blasts. When someone drops it, though, the gusts run wild! Out of the new items, more than a few will be from The Legend of Zelda series. We'll take the most interesting and straightforward ones and reformulate them to match the Smash Bros. world.

4/1

Pic of the day. This may look like a side-scrolling action game, but it's actually one of the stages.

March
3/31

Pic of the day. Luigi might be thinking, "Who would've thought I'd get to show off the Poltergust in Super Smash Bros.?!" Wondering if it's going to suck something in? Yeah, it probably will.

3/28

Pic of the day. Here's the Prism Tower stage for the 3DS version! The battle begins on ground level right in front of the tower.

    • You'll have to climb the tower by securing footholds like these moving platforms!
    • By the time you reach the top, the sun is already setting. The view from up there is quite a treat.

3/27

Pic of the day. Oh, Uncle Andross. He really isn't very considerate.

3/26

Pic of the day. Here's a giant attack item, the Ore Club! It's made of minerals mined on the mountain of the gods. This bulky weapon can even unleash tornadoes.

3/25

Pic of the day. Here's a comparison of characters with and without their outlines on the 3DS version. They also give off a different impression in 3D, so customize the look however you like.

3/24

Pic of the day. Never bully Cuccos. Seriously, attacking them is out of the question! This has always been a cardinal rule of The Legend of Zelda series.

3/21

Pic of the day. The most powerful commander of the Forces of Nature, Lightning Flash Phosphora!!

    • …is a Trophy. The detail in her scarf is amazing.
3/20

Pic of the day. The Peanut Popgun now deals a powerful attack when it explodes. It'll be difficult to hit your target, but when you succeed, the explosion will really blow your enemies away. Give it a shot when you break someone's shield.

3/19

Pic of the day. Fallen Rosalina. Strange how calm and nonchalant she looks even when she takes damage. Is it because she's from outer space?

3/18/14

Pic of the day. Here's some info on the Nintendo 3DS stage called Super Mario 3D Land! First, it advances by side-scrolling…

    • Then you continue into the valley--it's in 3D Land, after all. The protruding stone blocks change the angles of the platforms.
    • After that, back to side-scrolling. Now it gets you moving--you'll have to trot downhill here.
    • And finally, you get back on rails to go farther into the stage. It takes roughly two minutes to complete a lap, and at the end you go into a giant pipe that takes you back to the beginning. …I know this sequence goes above and beyond a traditional Pic of the Day, so consider this a little something extra on the side from me.
3/17

Pic of the day. That item that brings victory one step closer...the Smash Ball! Of course everyone wants it! Come to think of it, I haven't introduced any of the Final Smashes yet... Then again, if I introduced every single one, it'd take over a month's worth of posts.

3/14

Pic of the day. Looks like someone's enjoying the bachelor life in this pad.

3/13

Pic of the day. The tiny Motion-Sensor Bomb is hard to see. If you get any closer, it's dangerous. I warned you.

3/12

Pic of the day. Zelda's Din's Fire is now stronger in its core. The farther it's projected, the bigger and more powerful it will be, but you need to hit foes with the core if you want to make them fall.

3/11

Pic of the day. The Prism Tower rises above Lumiose City. Up until a few seconds ago, the fighters were brawling on top of that tower. No, really.

3/10

Pic of the day. This chubby guy is also Little Mac. Burn that fat!

3/7

Pic of the day. Here's a new stage for the 3DS version: Tortimer Island! I've been here countless times to catch bugs.

    • What a beautiful day. On this stage, fighters are randomly placed on a different island layout every time they visit. Yar, come back anytime, will ye?

3/6

Pic of the day. Little Mac's side smash attack is his straight right punch...but it can transform into an uppercut if you tilt diagonally upward, or a body hook if you tilt diagonally downward. The body hook is the most devastating of these moves and it doesn't blast the opponents away.

    • The trick in activating these punches is to avoid tilting the controls diagonally from the get go--instead, tilt up or down right after the smash attack starts kicking in. You can also tilt up or down while you're powering up.

3/5

Pic of the day. So far, which attack can blast away enemies the most dynamically… Is it King Dedede's fully charged Jet Hammer? Nah, it can't beat the K.O. uppercut. You can damage yourself by overcharging this attack, so watch out.

3/4

Pic of the day. The Bumper is back with a detailed new design. This also means there will be no Flippers.

    • Here's the back side of the Bumper. There's way too much detail put into the side you can't really see. The designers really went overboard.
3/3

Pic of the day. The twin grannies, Kotake and Koume, appear in Gerudo Valley! They're definitely up to no good.

February
2/28

Pic of the day. Dedenne's hard at work too.

2/27

Pic of the day. Once again, Waluigi's Assist Trophy joins the collection!! …Which also means he's not a playable character. Just because you try hard doesn't mean you'll make it into the battle.

2/26

Pic of the day. Now consecutive standard attacks will always transition into a finishing move. This is Fox's finishing kick after his standard combo attack.

2/25

Pic of the day. There are actually two versions of the boxing ring stage! This ring is the Smash Bros. version…

    • …and this one is the Punch Out!! W.V.B.A. design. King Dedede really likes fighting in the ring, doesn't he?

2/24

The twin rocketbarrels are back, now with the ability to launch along more horizontal trajectories. They can also come off when opponents hit them mid-boost.

2/21

Pic of the day. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is out now in Europe and North America! ...And to celebrate, Diddy Kong joins the battle!!

    • We've increased Diddy Kong's flexibility this time. This picture shows how far his punches stretch during his strong side attack.

2/20

Pic of the day. As shown in Little Mac's debut video, here is the height difference between Samus and Little Mac. He's used those mighty green gloves to punch out many challengers bigger than himself.

2/19

Pic of the day. This dog is huge… Wait, no, the playable characters are small. The Smash Bros. series doesn't always stay true to scale.

2/18

Pic of the day. Hey look, a bottle!! This is a special item that can even heal fighters who have accumulated over 100% damage.

2/17

Pic of the day. Little Mac can deliver some solid punches while fighting on the ground.

    • ...However, he's not the strongest fighter while airborne. Try keeping his feet on the ground and avoid being blasted into the air when you use him in battles.

2/13 - Update 2

Pic of the day. From Punch-out!!, our boxing challenger Little Mac joins the battle!! To get a glimpse of his fearsome punches, check out the newest video or visit the official web site.

    • His biggest feature is his Power Meter. When this gets charged up, his standard special move changes! It turns into a one-hit-K.O. uppercut.

2/13 - Update 1

Pic of the day. Tomorrow is Valentine's Day...and the day the new Nintendo Direct airs! It will stream in Japan at 7 AM so it's going to be a very early morning for us...!

2/12

Pic of the day. The Home-run Bat in this game is black! And it's so powerful that your eyes might bug out!!

    • And here's a look at a home run exiting the arena.

2/11

Pic of the day. You missed me, because you attacked my illusory copy from my Double Team move!

2/10

Pic of the day. A bored-looking dog staring at the TV… Occasionally, the Super Smash Bros. series really makes me confused about what I'm creating.

2/7

Pic of the day. Housed within the Control Capsule! Protected by Rinkas! Eyeball armed with a Laser Brain Attack!! The massive Assist Trophy Mother Brain joins the collection!!

2/6

Pic of the day. It is said that the cosmos is beneath Rosalina's gown. This was actually featured briefly in her debut video.

2/5

Pic of the day. Palkia appeared in the Spear Pillar stage of the previous game…but now it's coming out of a Poké Ball?! Here's Palkia's signature move, Spacial Rend!

2/4

Pic of the day. When Lucario shoots out Aura from its hands to fly with ExtremeSpeed, you can control its flight direction. If Lucario's Aura is fully charged, it can fly extremely far, so be careful not to accidentally launch out of the area.

2/3

Pic of the day. A size comparison of Lucario's standard special attack, Aura Sphere, in its weakest and strongest states. The attack is faster and more powerful when the Aura Sphere is bigger.

January
1/31

Pic of the day. The heroic Aura Pokémon, Lucario, joins the battle!! We've increased the influence of Aura this time, so a damaged Lucario is truly a force to be reckoned with.

    • Lucario joined the battle for the first time in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which was released six years ago. The production staff of Brawl worked really hard to expand the character roster--without their efforts, Lucario probably never would have joined the battle.

1/30

Pic of the day. Both Link and Pit use bows, but when they fire simultaneously, their arrows meet and cancel out closer to Pit. Besides attack power and projectile speed, there are many elements that affect tactics, such as accuracy, vulnerability after attacking, and even seemingly unrelated features like a character's physical abilities.

1/29

Pic of the day. You can find this statue of the Goddess of Light in one of the stages. She's watching over the arena.

1/28

Pic of the day. The Beetle item from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is a comical item that grabs characters and carries them into the air.

1/27

Pic of the day. Rosalina's down special move, tentatively called the Gravitational Pull, sucks up items and weapons. Weapons will be disabled when using this move, of course. You have to shake the Wii Remote to perform this move in Super Mario Galaxy, but you won't need to do that in this game.

1/24

Pic of the day. When Toon Link joins the battle, Alfonzo is in charge of the train.
Alfonzo: "Leave it to me!"

1/23

Pic of the day. This is definitely not a friendly girls night out…

1/22

Pic of the day. There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges. In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario's grab.

    • Some other changes include:
-Air time and accumulated damage will determine your period of invincibility while hanging on an edge.
-Grab controls will no longer be affected by whether you have above or below 100% damage.

1/21

Pic of the day. This is the Luma Shot, which highlights the different ways to control your Luma. You can switch between controlling the Luma alongside Rosalina or away from her.

    • Today is the 15th Anniversary of the launch of the first Super Smash Bros. There may be some players out there who played it on the Nintendo 64 as kids that have grown into adults.

1/20

Pic of the day. Where am I……??
To be clear, the new Super Smash Bros. games do not feature a story mode like The Subspace Emissary.

1/17

Pic of the day. Don't miss your chance, Zelda--King Dedede is knocked out.

    • Zelda: "Ah--soft and squishy."

1/16

Pic of the day. A group shot of the big guys. How much bigger are they compared to Mario?

1/15

Pic of the day. Who's the girl next door, living in the haunted mansion? You'd better learn my name because it's…

    • FYI, she's an Assist Trophy.

1/14

Pic of the day. Rosalina and Luma's attacks are very different. This screencap shows Rosalina producing a Saturnian ring for her strong up attack.

1/13

Pic of the day. King Dedede uses one of the strongest side smash attacks in all of Smash Bros. Use this attack wisely in battles.

1/10

Pic of the day. Celebrating the launch of Kirby: Triple Deluxe in Japan, King Dedede joins the battle! Check out his evocative facial expressions on the official web site.

1/9

Pic of the day. Watch out for the Shy Guys driving down Rainbow Road.

1/8

Pic of the day. The ropes surrounding the ring. You can actually use the stretchiness of the ropes to do a spring jump. However, you can't pull on them to launch yourself sideways in a lariat attack though.

1/7

Pic of the day. Zelda's strong side attack. It's a slash attack that utilizes her magic to make even a simple slash look sharp.

1/6

Happy New Year!
Pic of the day. There will be trophies in the 3DS and Wii U games, and each version will boast different types and models. The 3DS trophies will be mainly from handhelds and the Wii U version will feature trophies from the home-console games.

Daily Pic Archive: 2013

The following archives all of Sakurai's screenshot posts in 2013. The screenshots are sorted from newest to oldest.

December
12/27

The pic of the day that runs Monday through Friday will be on break starting Dec. 27. I'll be back on Jan. 6, so I hope everyone has a happy new year!!

12/26

Pic of the day. To celebrate the launch of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds in Japan, Zelda joins the battle!! It's great to see so many female characters this time around.

12/25

Pic of the day. Yellow characters.

12/24

Pic of the day. Happy Holidays! Here's a new 3DS stage--Rainbow Road! It can't be explained in one picture, but it's going to be a cruise-type stage.

12/23

Pic of the day. Rosalina's got height! She is seriously tall! However, she boasts an anti-gravity effect, so she's very light.

12/20

Pic of the day. A Luma becomes a star. Lumas are tough, but can also be blown away. Luckily, there's an infinite number of them.

12/19

Pic of the day. Rosalina and Luma can be right by each other or set farther apart. They're both controlled by the player, so a smash attack can be done from far off. Remote control all the way!

12/18

Pic of the day. N-now wait a second, let's talk this through! We don't wanna miss today's Nintendo Direct, right?

12/17

Pic of the day. In the train stage, the rear car can change during battle. It'll detach and move backward, so be careful! This pic features the Linebeck Trading Company, which is being transported for some reason.

12/16

Pic of the day. Uh-oh, someone's observing from afar. That's no good. The Yellow Devil will come flying in from the background.

12/13

Pic of the Day. The breed of the Nintendogs Assist Trophy has changed to a French Bulldog. It looks so real! Tell me that doesn't bring a smile to your face.

12/12

Pic of the day. Dismantle! Unite!! Yellow Devil!!!

12/11

Pic of the day. Yar, I wants to watch some o' that Smash action, too, ye great beast!

12/10

Pic of the day. There weren't a lot of people who used the Shield Breaker to break people's shields, so we've now made it much more powerful. This pic is from immediately after a shield break.

12/9

Pic of the day. Q: "Is this a Steel Diver?" A: "Yes, indeed, that is a Steel Diver." The sub from Steel Diver is now a cute projectile weapon--it launches torpedoes that fly slowly at first.

12/6

Pic of the day. Here's a new Assist Trophy--the Skull Kid! I repeat, it's an Assist Trophy, not a new fighter. The characters announced on the website are the fighters!

12/5

Pic of the day. The Villager's special attack, the Lloid Rocket, is a projectile weapon like no other--you can either launch it or ride on it. When you fire it off, keep pressing the button to hop aboard--you can even control its speed. It's more powerful when you're riding it.

12/4

Pic of the day. Excuse me, sir--a little help with the ball? There was once a game called Mega Man Soccer, by the way.

12/3

Pic of the day. Pop quiz! Who is this monster, and where is it from? The cage may serve as a hint.

12/2

Pic of the day. Turnips are used in the Villager's up-air and down-air attacks. Perhaps because the turnip prices fluctuate depending on the day's market, the number of turnips that appear changes every time. How cute.

November
11/29

Pic of the day. A red-black effect now appears when you're hit by a strong blow. It'll only appear when you have high damage, so when you see this you're in trouble--and you're probably about to get KO'd!

11/28

Pic of the day. A Dark Train goes full-steam ahead.

11/27

Pic of the day. Sonic, failure.

11/26

Pic of the day. Here's the new edition of the Ray Gun. The Smash Bros. mark appears backward because it acts like a stamp. We design the Ray Gun carefully each time to ensure it doesn't look like a real gun.

11/25

Pic of the day. I see some familiar faces.

11/22

Pic of the day. (The back of my neck sure feels warm…)

11/21

Pic of the day. Super Mario 3D World is out today in Japan! To commemorate the occasion I had these four…people(?) come together in a group shot.

11/20

Pic of the day. The giant wind mill in the right-hand side of Windy Hill. It keeps on turning even though it can't fit in the screen, so you'll find yourself in trouble if you're on it for too long.

11/19

Pic of the day. Here's Marth, the sleepyhead.

11/18

Pic of the day. Starship Mario floats up high in the Mario Galaxy stage. Lubba is on board as well.

11/15

Pic of the day. A new stage, Mario Galaxy!! The pull of gravity emanates from the center of the planet, so this will require using brand-new tactics.
  • Here's what happens when you stand by the edges. Vertical jumps and getting hit upward will shoot you up diagonally.

11/14

Pic of the day. The characters' thick outlines are only available in the 3DS version. Only the external outline is thickened and won't appear in instances like when the hands or feet are overlapping. It's got a softness to it and is not just black.

11/13

Pic of the day. The Villager's bug catching net that was shown in the movie is actually a grapple move. It is sort of like Link's Clawshot and Samus's Grapple Beam.

11/12

Pic of the day. Marth's sword has a powerful tip! So we gave his sword slashes a sharp look with an emphasis on its edge.

11/11

Pic of the day. Here are the familiar capsules--these guys deserve a prize for being in every single game. We gave them a cute redesign by shortening their length a bit.

11/8

Pic of the day. We gave Marth a full makeover, giving him design elements from Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and newer games.

11/7

Pic of the day. Marth joins the battle!! Once again, everyone will be overwhelmed by his magnificent sword skills!!

11/6

Pic of the day. Link's downward strike was designed to change to a Meteor Smash when the tip of the sword is aligned just right at the start. However, it will be removed if it's deemed too powerful overall after some multiplayer play tests.

11/5

Photo strip of the day. Plant it, water it, and then timber! It's high maintenance but totally worth the effort! It needs tactics like never before.

11/4

Pic of the day. Is this a spaceship from Hocotate? No-this is a bomb SHAPED like a spaceship. After liftoff, it will drop down when you least expect it.

11/1

Pic of the day. Kid Icarus: Uprising is now available to download via eShop in Japan. By the way, we gave a makeover to Pit's pose when he's shooting his bow and arrow so it looks sharper. Do note that all images are still in development. This and past pics may be different from the finished product. Thanks for understanding.

October
10/31

Pic of the day. The trial version of Wii Fit U is available now! We'd like to share this pic to commemorate the occasion.

10/30

Pic of the day. Is it just me or do I smell something beastly...?

10/29

Pic of the day. Let's try out the obstacle course today!

10/28

Pic of the day. The graphical differences of the Spin Attacks are clear. The way they hit are actually very different too.

10/25

Pic of the day. This one marks the 100th pic of the day! Without further ado, I'd like to introduce Luigi as he adjusts his nose. Hope you enjoy!

10/24

Pic of the day. Sonic: Lost World is out in Japan today! The Windy Hill area can also be seen in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U…but I can't tell you all the details yet!

10/23

Pic of the day. I've got this strange growth on my back lately---which should be impossible, since I'm a robot.

10/22

Pic of the day. Flying through rings actually requires careful maneuvering, so um...would you mind getting off?

10/21

Pic of the day. What a great sound a Meteor Smash makes when it slams on an opponent! …Which, I'm sure, you can't tell by the picture.

10/18

Pic of the day. We have absolutely nothing to announce today regarding Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Really!

10/17

Pic of the day. Looks like your teeth are cavity free, huh?

10/16

Pic of the day. A panoramic view of Skyloft, a location that we've seen since the first announcement of the game. You fight landing on the various platforms.

10/15

Pic of the day. Surpass the speed of sound! Become a star!

10/14

Pic of the day.
Stages like this one are often seen in the New Super Mario Bros series.
It means trouble.

10/11

Pic of the day. Wii Fit trainer is flexible even while sleeping.

10/10

Pic of the day. The shield that can deflect things with a little "clunk!" is still around. There's a slight reaction to the impact this time, so brace yourself.

10/9

Pic of the day. If it's just a missile, a sword can slice it right up. Of course, you could also just use your bare hands.

10/8

Pic of the day. Sonic's standard attack is also known as PPK. He finishes off his move with a side kick.

10/7

Pic of the day. Here's a close-up snapshot of Fox McCloud's Blaster. It can open up.

10/4

Pic of the day. The trio as joint co-stars. Who is the strongest of them all?!

10/3

Pic of the day. Excuse me, but I didn't just hear you say "Sonic joins the battle," did I?

10/2

Pic of the day. Let's compete on the jump springs! Those springs can also shoot out other fighters into the air.

10/1 - Update 2

A REAL pic of the day. Our guest, Sonic the Hedgehog, joins the battle! We also released a short video clip.

10/1 - Update 1

Pic of the day. The Warrior pose. It's not necessary to point that finger.

September
9/30

Pic of the day. The two heroes swing it out with a double Spin Attack! Wouldn't wanna be to the one to get hit.

9/27

Pic of the day. Excuse me sir, did you happen to drop this bomb?

9/26

Pic of the day. Toon Link joins the battle!! Just look at those innocent cat-eyes! The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD is out in Japan today.

9/25

Pic of the day. Luigi's jump now has him paddling his legs. His vertical leap is undoubtedly high!

9/24

Pic of the day. The ring is for whom?

9/23

Pic of the day. The speed and power of Samus's Charge Shot has been drastically improved. However, that could potentially put her in danger on occasion.

9/20

Pic of the day. Pardon us for a sec! Hop!

9/19

Pic of the day. By any chance, are you hiding something from me?

9/18

Pic of the day. Inside the corridor along one of the walls in Pyrosphere, a view that's really not visible in-game. You can't tell from the picture, but it's actually a gigantic open space.

9/17

Pic of the day. The ladies compare their heights.

9/16

Pic of the day. Here's the 3DS version of Captain Olimar and an upside down Link.

9/13

Pic of the day. Here comes my Mario…NOT!

9/12

Pic of the day. Peach joins the battle! We've added 10 pictures of her on the website, but keep in mind that the game is still in development. Her moves may be refreshed by the time the games are released.

9/11

Pic of the day. The Pyrosphere viewed from above. The Morph Ball design is also based on the one from Metroid: Other M.

9/10

Pic of the day. Isn't Kirby drawn with a familiar artsy style?

9/9

Pic of the day. Nothing to see here--just another airplane passing right above town with people fighting on it.

9/6

Pic of the day. Although it'll deal Pit some damage, Thunder Jolt isn't powerful enough to stop the Upperdash Arm!

9/5

Pic of the day. An encounter in the middle of a marathon...?

9/4

Pic of the day. His sliding move was originally used to pass under tight spaces.

9/3

Pic of the day. The Villager has two balloons. They can be popped one at a time.

9/2

Pic of the day. Mario Bros., your days are numbered! Donkey Kong in the current build is super strong…but we'll be looking at the battle records when balancing out the characters, so nobody knows how he will turn out in the end.

August
8/30

Pic of the day. The same name, yet a completely different move. Mega Man's Charge Shot is a chargable side smash attack.

8/29

Pic of the day. Link finishes off his move as Kirby dances.

8/28

Pic of the day. A panoramic view of Wuhu Island. The stage flies around the right-hand side of the mountain.

8/27

Pic of the day. A Reset Bomb has gone off! It's meant to return the surrounding area back to nature.

8/26

Pic of the day. Ahem! You mind not touching my nose?

8/23

Pic of the day. New and old planes makes a miraculous rendezvous.

8/22

Pic of the day. Wii Fit Trainer knocks in a header! This lethal move is based off of one of the Wii Fit Balance Games.

8/21

Pic of the day. I guess we haven't shown the Villager or the Wii Fit Trainer on the 3DS until now. By the way, their outlines can be made thinner or made to disappear completely.

8/20

Pic of the day. Out of the blue, here's a new stage--the Pyrosphere from Metroid: Other M! An enemy from Samus's past may appear at any second…

8/19

Pic of the day. Right back atcha! (everyone can do this)

8/16

Pic of the day. Here's the X Bomb from Kid Icarus: Uprising. Not to be mistaken for the one from Meteos.

8/15

Pic of the day. Isn't it a bit early to be worn out?

8/14

Pic of the day. Takeoff!

8/13

Pic of the day. A BOMB!

8/12

Pic of the day. A big fire breaks out in Gerudo Valley. Epona, help!

8/9

Pic of the day. Oh well…

8/8

Pic of the day.
Take a deep breath…

8/7 - Update 2

A REAL pic of the day--Luigi joins the battle! In prior games, we've never introduced Luigi before release, but why not? This is the "Year of Luigi," after all.

8/7 - Update 1

Pic of the day. Two that are actually not so tall. Kirby's about 8 inches high, Captain Olimar maybe a little over an inch.

8/6

Pic of the day.
This island looks familiar!

8/5

Pic of the day.
A mysterious space warrior appears.

8/2

Pic of the day. Mega Upper vs. Super Jump Punch.

8/1

Pic of the day. Come on out, Cragalanche! (Not really.)

July
7/31

Pic of the day. Dazed…

7/30

Pic of the day. It's easy to overlook town scenery while you're battling.

7/29

Pic of the day. Let's stretch our backs.

7/26

Pic of the day. The impact-launch effect has been powered up. The assigned color makes it clear which player will get points in the event of a KO.

7/25

Pic of the day. The tin lift somehow leaves a lasting impression.

7/24

Pic of the day. Right back atcha!

7/23

Pic of the day.
Viridi, Goddess of Nature, is about to obliterate the humans as they battle, driven by greed.

7/22

Pic of the day.
Close-up of the whistle and the Hocotate Freight logo.

7/19

Pic of the day.
Is that…a boy riding a gyroid?!

7/18

Pic of the day.
The fleeting lives of tiny creatures.

7/17

Pic of the day.
Treasure found!

7/16

Pic of the day.
Beware the double attack!

7/15

Pic of the day.
The S.S. Drake from the planet Koppai arrives at the Garden of Hope.

7/12

Pic of the day.
Pikmin & Captain Olimar have landed!
Congrats on the launch of Pikmin 3 in Japan!

7/11

Pic of the day.
A transforming view of the Mega Buster.

7/10

Pic of the day.
Mysterious solar power.

7/9

Pic of the day.
This shows a traveling stage in the moment just after Bowser got blasted from below in the first trailer.

7/8

Pic of the day.
The reflective shields of the Guardian Orbitars have patterns on them.

7/5

Pic of the day.
Adorable!

7/4

Pic of the day.
This stage appears in a Puzzle Swap panel.

7/3

Pic of the day.
This pic says it all.

7/2

Pic of the day.
New combatants join the fray.

7/1

Pic of the day.
The Yellow Devil appeared in the first Mega Man game, but…?

Her moves are based off her fitness exercises. Move your body. Let's try it together.

6/11 - Screenshot 1

Mega Man 2 seems to be the most popular, so many of his moves are from that game.

Oh nice, we're back up. Hoping for some obligatory Mac information.

Would be nice to see some other characters we haven't seen in a while too.

Just watch it not be Little Mac just because Sakurai is Sakurai. Still, I'd like to see more of what he's bringing to the table. I just hope they don't waste a day discussing his "Counter", it's pretty self-explanatory.

I was thinking Sakurai would show little mac today.
Yknow, change things up a bit.

I wonder what about little mac he'll be showing us, or if he'll be stating the obvious about the stage change.

If not Little Mac, I want to see more pictures of changes to veteran fighters, like Peach’s rainbow. Those kinds of updates are always welcome.

"Pic of the day. Little Mac is little!"

If there is a picture with a size comparison I will flip.

It'll be Little Mac for sure, but whether it contains actually useful info or just something silly and random is 50/50 really haha.

One hundred percent Little Mac. I'm hoping one of these upcoming pictures explains Doc Louis' role. Does he always shout when Little Mac is fighting? Just occasionally? Or was it just for the trailer? Hopefully Sakurai explains soon.

I guess it'll be a picture explaining the Super Armor of Mac or his poor aerial playstyle (since his main feature, the Power Meter, was already explained the day he was revealed). A picture pointing out his short height is possible, though.

I really hope we don't see explanation of the down or up special as from the trailer, it seems pretty self explanatory unless there is something completely unusual we do not know yet about them. I really want more info on the standard special and the ohko meter filling.

Most likely going to be a picture of Little Mac, hopefully explaining his unique mechanics.

I'm hoping for something on the KI arena stage with the Palutena statue.

Little Mac can be in that.

I understand a majority of the rules. The gif and videos not being able to be used in posts seems to be a little overzealous, but whatever I guess.

It's Little Mac tonight.

Nothing here is fun anymore.
Little Mac .
Yeah, there's not much of point to post here. I loved it when a cool or funny pic would show up and everyone would be having a good time for the next hour. Can't now.

Whatever. Don't get your hopes up for anything new guys, it will definitely be an explanation for one of Mac's moves. Peace out.

Little Mac .
I would comment on how I agree with this, but I believe meta-discussion is considered "off topic."
I therefore advise everyone to refrain from such derailing subjects.

Some "Fun and Socially Interactive Digression Alternatives" include:
Pixel-by-pixel analysis of the image
Calculating the angle of bent joints
Naming the characters seen in the picture (but only if it takes up multiple lines, as anything else would constitute a "One-Liner").

Sonic vs. Pikachu. Calling it. And no, I'm serious. I rarely see them, and I always like to think he will throw us for a loop and do something unexpected.

Or Little Mac and Samus. One is abnormally tall, and one is abnormally short. Perhaps a height comparison chart.

What do we do if the pic of the day is just something awful and boring? Do we just not say anything? I don't understand.

It's not a difficult concept to take the banter about the PoTD to the social thread.

Besides, talking about the rules in this thread is kind of derailing it and I'm risking getting penalized just to point this out.
We have a social thread already is all.

Er... Little Mac 2014.

I believe this was already clarified
Pixel-by-pixel analysis of the image
Calculating the angle of bent joints
Naming the characters seen in the picture (but only if it takes up multiple lines, as anything else would constitute a "One-Liner").
I forgot to mention "Naming the Stage that is featured in the picture, but if it isn't named then use it's widely accepted surrogate name to avoid appearing to be 'trolling.'"

Edit: My apologies, I forgot about the presumed llegality of posts contaiting subject-matter relevant exclusively to meta-discussion. Therefore:
I suspect that we will either get two characters, one of whom is taller than Little Mac, the other being Little Mac, standing next to each other so as to make the comparison of there height in a humorous manner using the universal association of being seen as shorter and being immasculated.

You either beat a dead horse or dip.

I don't see why people trip about goin' off topic. If I'm spittin' game at a girl or having a conversation with the homie I'm not gonna just keep repeating what I said; we get it.

Whatever though, I'm just glad I'm not a mod. I would do a terrible (albeit hilarious) job.
