Inspired by the ganondorf post in the troll thread.

There are so many times I see a player struggling against a player I know they can beat, destroy even. But they are playing against a character that they for some reason have a mental block against. For me I have somewhat of a block against falco and to a lesser extent jigg's. A friend of mine has a mental block against ganondorf. If Im at the top of my game I can four stock him with marth or sheik, but if im just screwing around with ganondorf and spamming fairs I will four stock him with hardly any damage. And I see that happen to him a lot in tournaments as well. And it kinda bugs me seeing a potentially good player get bogged down by a mental block. I tried teaching him the match up but according to him it doesnt seem to help to much. What are your mental blocks or mental blocks of people you know and how , in your opinion, do you overcome these mental blocks.

tl;dr Lots of people have mental blocks against certain characters, In your opinion how does one overcome a mental block.

Learning the match up is more than sitting down and being told some tricks. Learning to integrate them can be really tricky. Best thing to do is to just sit down and play the match up a lot, with people who know the match up telling you what to do.

He needs to use the fury inside of him to break bad habits. It's kinda like therapy, just how many times he can get hit with the fair before he realizes that it's bad to get hit with fair? To me I would get annoyed and frustrated (personal experience), and then simply change my gameplan to change my movement choice or moveset choices to evade it or counter it. One by one with every situation that occured that's what I did, took me a while but eventually there's simply less and less weaknesses for the opponent to exploit. I see it as tempering a sword to make it stronger, just keep on hitting it!! And continue!

Edit: I've also read the anger is a good tool to break bad habits in general in life. It's true if you use it properly and direct it in the correct way.

Also I want to clarify this is not a thread to help him, just a general thread about mental blocks, he mains doc and marth these days, but he hasnt taken the ganon match up with marth yet. But anyway, I think its just a matter of saying enough and moving out of the way when fair comes, or whatever particular move it is you're getting ***** by in that match up.

That would be incorrect, there's multiple ways to approach one particular situation. Finding the best options or the option that suits you best is the key to become a good player. I could as well simply choose to start dashdancing or wait for you to do something to connect the Fair, see? You have to be able to recognize these things, and bait it out.

I didnt literally mean to get out of the way. Let me rephrase, Sometimes enough is enough and you find out how to beat said move or character.

I get dominated by Sheik. I don't really feel like it is a mental block. I just don't know how to play the match up. Offensively I do okay, but I just get the balls comboed off me and suck at shutting down approaches. I'm sure if I practiced the matchup and got some advice I could adapt. Another thing I've found is helpful is using the character you are getting dominated by. When you learn that character's advantages and disadvantages from the playing perspective, it becomes much easier to pick them out when you are playing against them.

I don't really have a 'character' problem, (my worst matchups are my character's worst matchups) but there are a few players that I just can't beat. I can scrounge up a few victories against other players I know that are much better than both me and than this one guy for example, but I have never taken a game off this guy once, I don't know what it is. I guess his playstyle just completely ***** mine.
He's always just *this* far out of reach. He has an unorthodox approach, and he's a really technical Ganon player.

lololol i used to have the same problem w/ ganon. I main marth btw

My friend (whom i knew i could beat) would somehow always win against me. Sometimes, i would be up by 1-2 stocks and at the end, he woudl still somehow pull through.

I think ganon is one of the most intimidating chars in the game and that could be a reason your friend is having trouble against him. For a character like marth who is used to dominating the match w/ his range, getting out-faired or getting hit by extremely powerful attacks can be psychologically devastating.

To fix my problem i did a variety of things. First i knew that i had a problem w/ the matchup itself. To fix this, I started watching m2k vs magus vids and going onto smashboards to look up advice. But this only helped so much. When i played my friend again a few weeks later, i began to notice i could combo him and edgeguard, but the mental pressure was still there and he would win once again.

This psychological aspect is very hard to fix. You can learn tricks, combos, and other things in a matchup but to solve this, you need to figuratively "grow some balls". characters liek ganon are scary to go up against because you know you can combo them all day w/ any character, but at any second, they can pull off a dair or grab-fair and your advantage will be neutralized. To fight ganon's, marths need to be aggressive. Pressuring the ganondorf with your attacks will decrease the opportunities he has to hit you back which will alleviate some of the in-game pressure. Learning the precise spacing of ganondorf's attacks will also help.

I had Marthitis when I was first getting good; it was really frustrating but honestly you just have to keep playing. Don't try harder, try different. Try looking at the opponent.

There is a way around everything in every matchup.
I was just thinking the other day, when I play meta knight in brawl I have this mind set that he can deal with everything thats thrown at him from every character and there is never a need to switch, and thus I find a lot more options against my opponents. Then I relaized, while the top tier character in melee may not be as broken or dominant in comparison they all still have every tool they need to deal with every match up or situation. I've started playing with that mindset to see where it gets me. hopefully far.

I go through a phase of realizing I don't know things against a character when I play against someone who knows what they're doing/how to fight Falco.

Currently on Sheik. Went through Puff, Fox, and Marth earlier.

Peach is like a weird in between.

I beat this stuff by playing against good people who used these characters and came up with ideas, as well as watched those videos as well as those of other good Falcos who fought those characters.

Sucks there aren't many Falco vs Sheik videos besides me vs Tope lol. XD

A friend of mine who plays Falco CANNOT beat my Pichu.

He can beat my Sheik and Marth, goes even with my Ganon, can 4 stock my Fox (admittedly I don't really play Fox), but when I pick Pichu I can usually 4 stock him. I'd probably be JV 5 stocking except... y'know... self-damaging and stuff.

I'm inconsistent against Falcon as well.

Sometimes I 3 stock good players, other times I get Dair'd -> Knee'd repeatedly and *****.

Meh. Not too bad.

This times a million. As a fellow Marth player, it just kills me that I can get three stocked by a Sheik, and then CP puff and not ever die. This is with me barely ever playing puff, mind you.
