Anyone ever discover if its possible to cancel your charged moves in the air (like needles or giant punch) without airdodging? That one makes me so salty that I can't do it.
I believe some characters can, and it requires you to press R and hold it for exactly 1 frame; 2 frames and it will cancel->Air Dodge

Well you can do any OoS option on the ground but jumping from them I think.
In the air it's not meant to be easy I guess :p (considering you negate your landing lag with them, ITS FAIR)

You can only cancel air dodges with item throws or zairs from what I gather.
But you could do it in brawl. :( "needles are so much better" they said....... lol im kidding btw they are a little better.

What do you mean by "zairs?"

Are Roll Canceled Pivot Grabs practical?
Roll Canceled Pivot Grabs allow your character to use a pivot grab in PLACE instead of sliding.
Generally Pivot Grabs have quite a bit more range than ones standing grab so a Pivot Grab in place is a direct upgrade from a Standing Grab

Standing Grab
-must face opponent
-OoS
-less Range
-In Place

Roll Canceled Pivot Grab
-must face away from opponent
-Can't OoS
-increase grab Range
-In Place

Dash Grab
-Dash toward
-Can't OoS
-Range(lunge)
-movement forward

Pivot Grab
-Dash away
-Can't Oos
-increased grab Range
-Slide away

I think it could be significant to characters whose Dash Grab has them lunge so far you miss such as Captain Falcon
If someone crosses up your shield and shield drop to Dash Grab would whiff I can see the potential in a Pivot Grab while in place.

I know I've been getting some good use out of Lucario's RC Pivot Grab, because his standing grab range is utterly horrible...
It seems practical to me, though due to being a bit low on practice along with how I hold the 3DS I can only reliably RCPivot Grab to the right...
That's how I can tell it's a huge part of my game now, because I screw up punishes and grabs in general when facing left.

some pivot grabs are longer than standing grabs but for the most pivot grabs just seem longer because when executing them, you are turning around and grabbing opposite of your motion, so your characters natural slide stretches the hitbox. In those cases its not actually longer, its just you are putting out the grab then moving away from where you put it.

So I was practicing pivot options from runs the other day and went though the norm of grabs, f-smashes, and f-tilts. During that practice I managed to do pivot jab. I was never able replicate it. Any ideas on how it couldve been done?

I think I remember seeing this before; pretty sure you have to 'Perfect Pivot' (press the opposite direction for exactly 1 frame; you end up standing still facing the opposite direction with no lag) then press A, as you're in a standing position.

It was done during a full blown run and not from a fox trot.

Do Windboxes affect some projectile attacks?
I think in very special cases but not often. I think projectiles that do special stuff on contact can like PK fire but I'm unsure.

Oh items can be affected tho.

So, I noticed while trying to footstool that if you doublejump near someone, you get massive height. It's kind of wierd and seems to happen at random. Any ideas?

I've been having a hard time pivot grabbing in this game. Apologies if this has been asked before, but is it different than Brawl? In Brawl, after you turned around you could immediately do a pivot grab, but when I try it on the 3DS I do a pivot tilt instead. It only seems to work if I do it in the middle of the dash animation.

I've noticed this a few times too. Perhaps some action of the opponent is preventing them you both from going into the "footstooling" animation, but the behavior of the jump feels a lot like having just footstooled off somebody. Was this sort of phantom footstool a thing in Brawl?

Is it possible to get out of a tumble animation without attacking or airdodging? i usually just find myself falling to the ground and teching.

Does anyone have any ideas on if there's a quick and easy way to turn around from a crouch after down tilting?

Seems like everyone is forced to be dealt with their entire standing up animation before they can input a natural turn around if they down tilt. You can otherwise normally crouch in one direction and quickly turn around during your standing up animation into another crouch.

You can obviously do all attacks and physical actions; so you can ftilt in the opposite direction, jump, etc etc. Just not turn around.

Lol, don't even know how I quoted myself wtf.

I knew it was known for awhile, but didn't realize that it created pretty much a pivot grab slide from a standstill. I didn't know whether it had been brought to attention, but at the risk of looking foolish I decided to take a shot and post it lol.

Sorry about that

Are meteor cancels still in this game?
I can't seem to find the timing to them anymore.
Unless 90% of moves are spikes now.

I'm not sure what the big deal is with the roll cancelled pivot grab being able to pivot grab in place. There's a quicker and easier way to do this called the 'instant standing pivot grab' (from memory), though you need a c-stick to perform it. Just hit the joystick in one direction then instantly grab and hit the c-stick in the other direction. I can only assume this is in smash 4, though if someone could check for me that'd be great.

Quick question:
Probably It's just me and my lack of reflexes, but is it posible than you shield faster if instead of holding the shield button you press it exactly when you receive an attack?
I notice it when I'm getting back from a ledge to the plattform, normally I would A > L to shield if I think the other player is going to strike, but I end up getting hit most of the time, but when I try to attack a player that's coming from the ledge like I do, I end up with my attack getting shield. Maybe I just need more practice, I try to come back to the plattform in differents ways so I don't get punished o my opponents reads me everytime, but still

Nope, any shield input works the same.

Quick questions, Sorry but thanks in advance:

Is the Shield-Canceled Dash Grab in Smash 4?

Since Marth's sweet-spot tipper hit-box outprioritizes non-tipper hit-boxes, would this mean that Shulk's Tipper area on his Monado's Beam portion outprioritize in the same manner, or become outprioritized because it's not Shulk's sweet-spot?

Hi. Look, the thing is that since the announcement of Smash 4 I`ve been wanting to develop myself on competitive smash. But being honest, I know nothing about the basics. So if someone could explain me some basics or at least guide me to some tutorials about the most basic techniques on Smash 4 and maybe Brawl and Project M (like L-Canceling, Dodging, ect..) I would be really grateful. Only the techniques that apply to every character, not something fancy like bomb-recovery for example.

I think it's best if you resort to this thread. http://smashboards.com/threads/a-guide-to-becoming-a-competitive-smash-4-player.370561/
#5 has what you're looking for I believe. I don't think there is a direct 'basic guide' as of yet.

How do you do it? At most I can get 3 (maybe 4) dashes before I screw up. Any tips?
