I hope whatever he paid you was worth your dignity saying that.
To clarify, he posted that on his own volition. I just NOW discovered that post today LOL.

Also could somebody clarify something for me?

What was the debate regarding the applicants answer to the combo question? I haven't checked this thread in a while.

is it a cop out of you attack the question rather than answering it?

is it a cop out of you attack the question rather than answering it?
Possibly. Or maybe they're all debating the question to possibly get brownie points.

So instead of actually taking a side on the debate they debate about how the question is ultimately bias.

Yup.

I didn't debate for brownie points or to cop out.
I was asked a question and I answered it, as best as I could.

In doing so, that pointed out that the question couldn't be simplified in a "1 or 2" kind of answer, but rather expanded into something more. Answering in the simplified format would leave a lot unspoken and unanswered.
That, and I like getting more in depth with questions.

Smashboards Username: joeplicate
Region: Norcal (Socal sometimes)
Primary Character(s): FOX
Secondary Character(s): Marth, Falco (I guess)

REQUIRED

1. Q. How long have you been playing competitive melee?
A. I started playing and practicing melee with the goal to "get good" spring of my junior year of high school, so about 4 years competitively.

2. Q. How often do you attend tournaments? How familiar are you with your local scene? Your regional scene? The national/international scene?
A. I attend tournaments pretty often, almost all of them that get scheduled. I'm very familiar with the Norcal scene, I know a lot of people around the area really well, I'm good friends with them, and I have played lots of smash with them. Also, from spending different summers/vacations/weekends in socal (where I started playing melee) I know the socal scene extremely well, too. On the regional scale, I've been to tournaments all over California and a handful in Washington state, and I'm well acquainted with players from Arizona, Washington, and Las Vegas. I am not as familiar with the national scene; I've really only been to two nationals (Genesis and Pound 4), and although I know a handful of people from the East Coast, there are a lot of other players that I'm not familiar with on the personal level.

3. Q. How would you classify yourself as a player relative to the current metagame? (beginner, average, high level, pro, etc.)
A. I'd say I'm a high level player. Throughout my smash career, there have been setbacks to my improvement, and my desire to play the game has come and gone. I'm not the best in my region, and occasionally I will struggle with getting consistent results, but I feel like (currently, at least) I have the potential to be a really strong contender in tournaments. I have more experience in smash than I give myself credit for, usually. I'm not a top player by any means, though.

4. Q. Do you think the other individuals in your region would support you being a member of the MBR? Why?
A. I think so. I'm a pretty articulate person, and a lot of people recognize that I'm good at finding the right words to express my thoughts. I'm also well-traveled and I know the Norcal community very well; I have the experience with our scene to validate my opinions. I'm PRETTY sure people like me, at least, LOL. I can be sort of blunt sometimes, which some people might get pissed off at me for occasionally, but I think that's a good thing insofar as the MBR is concerned. I don't pull any punches when I'm expressing myself, and other smashers recognize that about me. Also, I've seen a couple people around SWF saying that I should be in the back room, so I'm cool with that if that's what they think. :)

5. Q. Do you consider yourself a discussion leader? Why?
A. Honestly, not really. I'm not much for mediation because I don't like to put up with other people's BS--I'll usually call them out on it. I think I have valuable input, but I can be slightly impatient when it comes to other peoples' opinions, and I don't consider myself a leader in most cases. I'm very convinced of my own opinion, but I'm usually not interested in homogenizing the opinions of others to present a single, unified platform. If I get in, I will contribute to the threads, but I wouldn't necessarily want to be in charge of a project or the author of a thread.

6. Q. Are you an active Tournament Organizer? If Yes, what are some recent tournaments you have hosted? If No, what are some ways you feel you contribute to your local scene despite not being a TO?
A. I'm not an active TO, although I'm well-acquainted with the tournament-running process. I've managed brackets before, reported matches, called matches, ran pools and reported their results, but I have never hosted; I almost always go to tournaments as a player, rather than making the bracket or running it my main responsibility. (Carpooling with Sheridan has something to do with this, too, because he's usually got things completely on lock :))

I'm also extremely active in my sub-local smash scene, that is in Santa Cruz. I made the Santa Cruz thread, where we all post plans to have smashfests and talk and what not, and I (along with the help of Sheridan and Truman and others) organize smashfests on the UC Santa Cruz campus and try to get new people involved in the community, and bring them to tournaments. We're actually in the works of discussing hosting a tournament on-campus here, which might happen sometime in May (although I have to admit this wasn't my idea =P).

7. Q. Do you feel that the current tier list is accurate? Why?
A. I feel like it's accurate for the most part. Personally, I would put sheik higher and drop jigglypuff so that she's tied with marth. I think fox, falco, and sheik are all essentially tied for first.

What I dislike about most tier lists is that they are liable to change based on a single player's performance, and it seems like they are in constant confusion about what they want to represent. Matchups? Character potential, when played at maximum capacity? The current metagame? When Mango and Hungrybox were at the peak of their game, there were a lot of people sucking jigglypuff's **** (to put it bluntly ;)). Statements like "I'm moving Dr. Mario up the tier list!" arise from an instability in their nature.

In the current description, there's a lot of ambiguity. If we were to "assume top level of play," is this human level play, or TAS-style fox and falco? Is it Lucky playing at his absolute peak, which might only be for a few minutes out of a whole tournament, or is it Hungrybox playing with tournament-winning consistency? What do we mean by "top level," exactly?

So I believe that the current tier list is accurate, as of now, but only because it's impossible to be inaccurate the way the description is worded. The criteria that define our tier list are broad enough to make it hard to object against.

8. Q. Do you feel that the current MBR recommended stage list is fair? Why?
A. Yes, although I do think it's slightly boring. The advantages that come from stage counterpicks are relatively small now, and there are bans for the big ones anyways, so the stages don't lend too great of a hand to either player. The thing I dislike is that, in 3/5 sets, there are far less counterpicks available, and with Dave's Stupid Rule (or DSRM) in effect, I've seen a lot of people just throw up their hands at the last match of a set, and say "Battlefield?"

9. Q. Do you feel that the current MBR recommended rule set is fair? Why?
A. Yes, although partly because I've never known anything else. Honestly, I liked random stage selection a lot because I felt it set the mood for the set better, and I kind of dislike waiting around during stage striking. There was that element of chance (which could still be mitigated with resets) that was really exciting, and I think people played harder on the first match to win the counterpick advantage.

By striving to eliminate any influence a stage can have over a particular matchup, we have a very fair ruleset. I still think it's a little bit bland, though.

10. Q. What is more important to you: Tech Skill or Strategy? Why?
A. Tech skill is more important.

My take on improvement in this game largely revolves around muscle memory. Why is practice important? Because if we were to think of every input we have to do to shield pressure, or to combo, or to bait a move correctly, it would be impossible to accomplish in-game. Improvement in this game is putting more and more situations into your effective muscle memory, until you have a particular scenario practiced so well you can recognize the right time to apply it, and pull it off flawlessly.

Tech skill--muscle memory, and perfect execution which comes from lots of practice--comprises the building blocks for strategy. Say falcon gets a read. "If I dash towards fox, he will tech roll backwards. Then I can dash back and stomp his tech roll." Without having the proper tech skill to execute this plan--dash left, dash right, short hop, stomp, l-cancel, knee--the whole scenario would fall to pieces.

The way we improve, and add new tools to our smash toolbox, is by trying out new tech skill (or sequences of inputs) and looking for different scenarios to apply it in.

11. Q. What is more important to you: Maximizing Punishments (Combos) or Initiating Punishments (First Hits)? Why?
A. I think first hits are more important. There are only so many option trees that a given punishment has, and after mastering all of the possible outcomes, there's not much room to improve. Guaranteed hits are only guaranteed for so long, but I think the real meat and potatoes in Smash lies in first hits, in the push-and-pull aspect.

12. Q. Does SSBM have a limited lifespan as a competitive community due to its age or any other factor? Why or why not?
A. I honestly believe that the only thing that can stop people from enjoying this game is a ****ty attitude or lack of reverence towards Melee spreading throughout the whole community.

There are a lot of tryhards in the smash community; I think the main thing to remember is that we undertook this pursuit to have fun and to improve, in that order. (It also helps that they feed off each other!)

13. Q. What do you think could be done to expand our community?
A. We need to keep things fresh. Fresh faces, fresh tournaments, new rewards or incentives to play (like sponsorships, or free swag, etc), new videos, and new/different forms of exposure. The danger in playing such a stabilized game is that things can get stale. There have been tournaments for 7, 8, or 9 years now? The most important thing in expanding the community is offering a different experience each time, because the same tournament, the same people, and the same game can get kind of boring after awhile.

The game has remain unchanged for 10 years now, but there's still so much to explore in it! Even if we keep the same ruleset, there's still close to infinite depth in this game; there's an endless amount of different playstyles, different perspectives, and different players. The only real danger, I think, is having negative or stale tournament experiences (which happens, just considering the nature of getting experience in a gaming community) and then transferring these negative feelings to Melee itself.

14. Q. What do you think the MBR could do to stimulate the community?
A. I think the strength of the MBR lies in its exclusivity. These are people who have been selected for their knowledgeable opinions, their experience in the game and in the community. I believe the most interesting thing the MBR could do for the common player/SWF-er is to provide insights into the depth of knowledge MBR members have.

If there's discussion about a particular stage, or a particular matchup, the best thing to do would be to SHARE this information, and present it to the public in a way that's easy to digest. Like a youtube video, for example (with gameplay, ideally), or a post with pictures and clear reasoning behind whatever decision. Or, if the MBR needed to ask for input on something, they could create a big post in Melee discussion, outlining their reasoning clearly, and try to stimulate some good conversation.

15. Q. How do you think the MBR would benefit from your input?
A. I think I have a way with words. I know the West Coast melee community extremely well, and I have a lot of experience playing and thinking about the game itself. I'm studying literature and philosophy in college right now, so I read new material, formulate arguments, and express my opinions on the daily. Most people would agree that I'm a pretty good writer, and I am 100% not afraid to call someone out if I think they're wrong, or at least to point out their errors if I think they're operating on false premises. =)

OPTIONAL

1. Please provide up to 5 examples of contributions you have made to the melee community. Links to exceptional, informative posts are highly valued here.
1. Link: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=277921
i. Description: This is a thread I made about practicing tech skill; a lot of my thoughts about improvement and muscle memory are detailed there, and I have a few write-ups about the process of getting better tech skill.
2. Link: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=295057
i. Description: This was a thread I made about Smash Digest, like Reader's Digest except for youtube videos. I did a full write-up of everything that happened during one game of the Don't Go Down There Jeff! finals between Lucky and Jman. Unfortunately, chronicling everything that happens in a tournament match is a LOT of work, and typing it up is even more work, and frankly I wasn't sure that people would enjoy all that information in that format anyways, so I have all but dropped the project.

i. Description: This is a really recent post I made detailing my thoughts on Fox and where he stands in the current metagame. It was pretty well-written, and a few people gave me props for it, so I might as well include it I guess haha.
4. Link: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=253557
i. Description: Another fairly successful thread I made. Talking about negative thoughts in tournament and how to avoid them. I used to have an amazing mindset towards improvement, when I was super gung-ho about playing smash (08/09), but since then my determination has fizzled a bit as my skill has leveled off. =P
5. http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=231189
Desciption: This is the Santa Cruz thread. Disclaimer: It's a regional thread, so don't be offended if there's a bunch of ********-sounding **** in there LOL.

2. List up to three players you feel demonstrate good discussion ability or have outstanding contributions to the community and explain why you think they are a good example.
1. Player: MacD
i. Reason: He's got a TON of experience in the national community, from what it seems. He's a really nice guy, he's really good at smash, and he has lots and lots of connections from going to tournaments. It seems like he enjoys the hell out of himself at big events, and it has showed in his steady improvement. :)
2. Player: Lovage
i. Reason: He's the cutting edge of Fox play right now; he's at the forefront of technical ability, and he's got as much experience as I do. He always posts in a genuine manner, too; his advice is unconventional and amazing, because it's founded in vulpine blood, sweat, and tears, and he's outspoken. Lots of unique opinions and thoughts about the game, and the clout to back it up.
3. Player: Shroomed
i. Reason: YEAH I GUESS YOU CAN PUT DAJUAN IN

3. Have you read Sirlin's theories regarding "Play to Win"? Do you agree or disagree? Why? How do you think these theories affect and apply to the Melee community?
1. Answer: I have, and I'm definitely going to take advantage of the "optional" component on this one!!

My thoughts on competitive play, right now, are as follows:

Find fulfillment in the game you play, and make that the focus of your efforts to improve. Find positive motivation in what you do, take pleasure in your newfound ability, and seek the confidence that stems from happiness; be glad that you're in a community of people who strive to improve themselves above anything else. :)

The first wave of acceptance is happening after some changes are done to the MBR forum structure.

That is the only thing determining the first acceptance date.

So I assume that even though some of these haven't been uploaded to the front page, they'll still be considered?

I have a few questions with this new backroom if you don't show being active with debating rules or just sticking with your idea are you given a warning or are u just kicked out?

An active backroom would be amazing instead of what it was about 3 months ago (read some at friends was rather sad)

Really I want in the backroom to help make the stage list since we only use about 7 stages and of the 7 u get to ban 1 so lowers stages to about 5 stage picks in the end.
