Ya know, I have to say this again...since I've been anxiously waiting for MvC2 now for the PS3, I was running through some of my old MvC2 video collections.
Lord and behold, I got the video of Justin Wong vs IFC Yipes at Evolution 2007, where Wong had that monster comeback round. Watching this match up simply got me even more excited to wanting to get my hands on MvC2 now. You have to remember, I no longer have my DC anymore, since I lend it out my cousin, who then lent it out to a friend, and who's friend that now longer lives in town and went off with my DC along with 203498290348 of my DC games...including MvC2.
Was I pissed? Yes, but for some reason, not for long...anyhow, that's another story, and back to the Wong vs Yipes match up.
What do I think of this single round? Well, to be truthful, this is the GREATEST SINGLE COMEBACK in Evolution Tournament History. Yes, we've had alot of exciting ones, Wolfe's Sim wake up super on I believe either Gian or Tokido, forgot it happened in 2007 and it was amazing, since Wolfe was down to a sliver of life. However, I'm probably sure everyone remembers Evolution 2004 right...with Daigo vs Wong and the Chunli SAII Parry into the win.
Some may ask...how could it possibly be the best? Even better then the Daigo Parry at Evo2k4?!
First off, let's break this down shall we...Daigo's full Parry at Evo2k4 was amazing, however it was made better with the crowd and the uproar. However, if you think about it from a gameplay standpoint, it's not very amazing at all. In that last few seconds, Daigo was in fact waiting for the Super Art to come out to Parry, and expecting this, he easily was able to punish Wong for it.
Remember, parrying SAII from that standpoint is not very difficult, it just requires a bit of practice. Heck, during my time, I've parried Chun's SAII for the comeback win, Parried Denjin-Hadouken for the comeback, parried Yun's G-J super high frames to win before. It's nice and all, however the situation and the Parry itself does not make it as appealing.
Wong vs Yipes on the other hand is something on a completely different level in terms of a comeback. You could call Wong's comeback like that a Lion Roar where as Daigo's was that of a wolf howl. The reason being is this...Wong was down to one last character....Cyclops! He was confronting against Yipes nearly full hp MSP.
If anyone has seen, or knows Yipes, his MSP is the Best MSP in the entire World, period, nobody on the face of this green Earth plays Magneto on the same level that Yipes does, nobody! His resets at times look almost in-human and sometimes make you wonder if he's using some program stick or what, however he's completely legit.
Yet here was Wong, not wanting to give up, seeing him double jump, to launch Super to slowly eek away at Magneto. Then a super well placed combos and Magneto's K.O.ed, now this is where it gets SUPER incredible. Because if I was Wong, I would have never done it, however it's just testament to why Wong is regarded as the best overall MvC2 player ever.
Psychic Dragon Punches....yes, Wong was executing Psychic Dragon Punches to punish Storm. Now, I don't care what you try to say, however this is MAGIC, this is what you call, having
CLUTCH. Because for him to do that, when he's down, and still Two characters to One, that's just simply incredible.
Obviously it comes down to a 1 on 1 ST mode Mind Games as the commentator said

, however there was one moment in which Yipes could have potentially won, and that was when he caught Wong with the air combo however wasn't able to execute the Butterfly Super and missed. Obviously when Yipes shot Psylockes projectile, Wong had double jumped right in front, for the "just in case" because people do in fact do this with characters who are capable of doing so.
Then obviously the rest is history, Wong cameback, and won that round. A round that I feel is the greatest ever, you can sit here and try to argue or debate with me that other comebacks from Evo's past like Daigo's were better. However the biggest factor why this one is 10,000,000,000,000 miles ahead of Daigo's was simple.
Unlike Daigo, he was not at a huge disadvantage, and more importantly, he had Parry, the most powerful defensive/Offensive Universal Option in any SF game at his disposal. Wong on the other hand had none of these advantages, and the cup of water clearly favored Yipes in that he still had 3 vs 1.
Wong had to rely upon sheer execution, and a basic no fear mentality, because the turning point for Daigo was when he had guessed correctly once and that was with anticipating the SAII to Parry, while Wong on the other hand, had to guess right like 8+ different times. This is why Wong's comeback in MvC2 is the Greatest Evolution Moment Ever. You can try to dispute, but just look at the facts, and look at how disadvantage he was, look at the mere notion that "if" he would have screwed up just once...Magneto could have easily rommed or reset Cyclops within 3 seconds to his death.
However, Wong put a foot into the Door as to why Marvel vs Capcom 2 is the most amazing FIGHTING GAME to watch at the highest lvls. This is coming from me, a man who kisses the feet that Street Fighter II walks on, yet MvC2 has no equal when it comes to it's hype and madness. This was a true showing as to why Cyclops was the True Leader of the X-Men, and why Xavier gave him the nod. The dude went up against Magneto, Storm and Psylocke and showed everyone the power of the Gene-Splice!
Obviously this may sound like a random rambling with videos that happend like nearly 3 years ago, however Marvel vs Capcom 2 is such an amazing game. People always bash it for it's broken tier listing, however nobody ever seems to realize just how overrated balance is to a fighting game, and that the true bread and butter of the game comes from the gameplay and it's game mechanics.
MvC2 delivers, and when it's out, I'm going to be walking over peeps dead corpses with my own Magneto/Storm/Psylocke Team. Yep, I play MSP, although on occassion, you'll see me play Team ClockWork a team I used to play alot back in the day.
