This is just 9 tournaments, imagine if it were the other 100+ person tournaments in Melee that occured.

THIS IS JUST A HISTORY LESSON! MAKE YOUR OWN JUDGMENTS!

2007 top 25 tournaments: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=143600
-11 of the 25 tournaments listed were won by Marth
-15 of the 25 tournaments had Marth in the top 3 (or even twice in the top 3)
-Of the 5 tournaments with at least 200 attendants, Marth won 3 and placed 2nd in the other 2

2006 MLG events:
-Of the 6 Regular season (open) events in 2006 for MLG, Marth won 5 of them (minimum attendence 143, maximum attendance 204, rough average attendance about 165)
-Marth was on the winning team for EVERY single event.

---

It is far more interesting to look at the number/variety of characters used in the top 8 then simply to look at who won, because usually the same names will appear frequently and the best players are simply the best players.

For example, HOBO 11 is often used as evidence that MK should be banned, but look at the results again:
1: M2K (meta)
2: Azen (lucario/meta)
3: Lee (meta)
4: DMG (wario
5: DSF (snake/meta)
5: Roy_R (marth)
7: Edrees (peach)
7: Hylian (GW/meta?)

There are 7 characters represented in the top 8.

Lets compare to VLS, the last major Melee tournament in 2007:

1. Azen (Marth)
2. ChuDat (Ice Climbers)
3. KoreanDJ (Sheik)
4. Mew2King (Marth)
5. Drephen (Sheik)
5. PC Chris (Fox/Falco?)
7. Chillin (Fox)
7. Darc (Jigglypuff)
(if any of these players used other characters in top 8 matches please inform me)
That is 6 characters represented in the top 8, maybe less if PC didn't use Falco (need confirmation).
So, should you look at just who won, or should you look at the big picture and the number of characters used in top 8 matches? Marth won the vast majority of 100+ person tournaments over Melee's life time:
In 2004, there were 2 100 person tournaments: Marth won TG6 (cali) ang GO (Virginia)
In 2005, there were 6 100 person tournaments: FC3 (Marth), GS2 (Marth), MLG DC (Marth, MLG San Francisco (need to confirm but I believe Marth), BOMB 4 (IC, but Marth took 2nd/3rd), MOAST 3 (Falcon, Marth second, correct if wrong but IIRC Isai won over Ken)
In 2006, there were 12 100+ person tournaments: (MLG New York (Opener)-Falco 1st, Marth 2nd, MLG Dallas-Marth 1st, MLG Anaheim-Marth 1st, MLG Chicago-Marth 1st, MLG Orlando-Marth 1st, MLG New York (Playoffs)-Marth 1st, FC6-Falco 1st, OC2-Marth 1st, SMYM 6-???, Gauntlet-???)

Marth was in the top 2 or won almost every single 100+ Melee tournament.
Between 2004 and 2005, of the 8 100+ person tournaments, Marth was top 2 in ALL of them, or all but one (need confirmation on MLG San Fransisco). Marth had a 62.5% win rate at 100+ tournaments between 2004/2005 and a 100% or 87.5% top 2 rate.
At least 8 of the 12 100 person tournaments in 2006 had Marth in the top 2, with no data for 2 tournaments (so through those out and make it 8 of the 10 tournaments, until someone says the winners), and Marth won almost every single MLG event (so when the money was on the line, Marth performed), there wasn't a single MLG event that there wasn't any Marths in the top 3.

-
TL:DR version: Marth placed in the top 3 at almost EVERY SINGLE 100+ person Melee tournament, EVER. Of the approximately 30 100+ person tournaments between 2004 and 2007, Marth was in the top 2 at over 20 of the tournaments. In the earliest year that Melee had a national scene, in 2004, Marth won 100% of 100+ person tournaments. Including 2005, Marth win's % barely drops slightly (still won more than 50% of the 100+ person tournaments), but he is top 2 at 100% of tournaments (out of 8 100+ person tournaments between 2004 and 2005).

---

Basically, Marth dominated from day 1 in Melee, and his dominance didn't ever wane. You can say all you want about match ups, I'm just looking at the RESULTS.

Marth used to be dominant that is true.

However... He wasn't AS dominant.
The extent to which he dominated the tournament scene was much lesser in comparison to MK.

In big tournaments it can be said that marth did dominate as much as MK.
Holistically though Marth does not.
Holistically Marth does not dominate anywhere near to the degree that MK has.

I want to see the argument from the SBR.

I dont get the purpose of this thread.

This is barely scratching the surface as to why people would consider MK ban-worthy.

Az the problem is that if you look at win rate then it cannot be said at all as to how each character affects the Metagame.

If I win 9/10 of all matches and my opponent wins 99/100 of all his matches. Who would be considered better?
The latter I am sure.

I mentioned it in my last post. What you are addressing is only the big tournaments which are minor in terms of number compared to smaller tournaments.
So the sample size is much too small.

You have to include all the tournaments of a notable size to be more accurate. Not just the 6 large tournaments.

I don't understand, you asked if people CP'd Marth against Marth.

They did: Azen, Neo, KM, Ken, M2K, Husband, all of them (with very few exceptions), did Marth dittos instead of counter picking.

Hahahahahaha. If they're maining Marth, why would they CP another character in a ditto?

Because that would mean they chose a character with an advantage in the match up.

However, thats okay, I'll C/P your argument anytime I see MK's in the top 3 and people saying there are no counters, I'll simply say "why would they use a counter! They main MK!".

I don't know how else to explain it to you: People who are playing one character and then switching to MK against other MKs ARE NOT maining MK.

I am now done with this thread.

Good job AZ. I've been referring to Melee Marth all the time, when ppl came up with MKs results but nobody would listen ;_;

Either way it's good to see that I'm not the only one who thinks like that.
Also don't forget the "pre-Ken-era"-Sheik

Dominating the tournament scene is only ONE of the reasons to ban MK. Its isnt a sufficient argument unless coupled with the other factors.

This thread is ridiculous.

One thing you are forgetting is the margin of victory.

Metaknight 3-stocks EVERYONE.

Marth matches tend to come down to the last stock, meaning that most of the top tier characters had a decent matchup, and the big difference was player skill.

But when you are Metaknight, 3 stocking EVERYONE you play who isn't Mk, then it's a problem.

MK =/= Melee Marth.

Uhh yeah ok, but you aren't looking at the full picture. There are 26 characters in Melee and 39 in Brawl.

6/26 = 24%
8/39 = 20%

So based on percentage of the total character roster, more characters were viable in Melee.

BUTTTT, the biggest thing you aren't looking at is how OFTEN they appear in the top 8.

There are 2 Marths out of 8, while there are 5 MK's out of 8! The amount of people playing Marth is no where NEAR how much MK is being used. Fact of the matter is, Marth is in the top tier with Fox/Sheik/Falco, he isn't completely dominant.

MK is in a tier of his own, and his tournament placements prove it. Marth might have been dominant from the beginning of Melee's metagame, but it's no where NEAR the level of play MK is getting right now.

Ok, it was a bit of an exaggeration, but MK still beats people much worse than Marth EVER did.

Marth matches tended to come down to the wire a lot, MK matches come down to Aerial-Aerial-Aerial-Aerial-Shuttle Loop-Gimp. **** and repeat.

This is not true.

Look at Marth vids fraom m2k, ken and azen pl0x before saying something like that. The only thing that was different was, that the oponnents were stronger (PC chris, mango, kdj')

Forget Akuma, I wonder what the smash community would say about Yun or Magneto.

It's all just complaining.

I believe that Marth's dominance in 2007 is correlated to the respective decline of top-placing Sheiks. In any case, with regard to both Marth and Metaknight, these are the questions that must be answered:

1) Does Marth have counters (stages, characters)?
2) Does Metaknight have counters (stages, characters)?
3) In both cases, do those counter strategies present a viable path to victory for an opponent facing Marth/Metaknight?

Tournament results reflect trends, they do not inform or start them. To accurately draw a comparison between Marth and Metaknight, the trends have to be understood first. We know that Marth ***** 2007, but why? Is it because Marth is the best character in Melee? That's debatable. We know that Metaknight is ****** 2008, but why? Is it because Metaknight is the best character in Brawl? There's near universal agreement that he is.

That difference right there renders the comparison inaccurate, I think.

Melee matches were also longer than Brawl matches, with more stocks.

Also, have you ever seen Dojo's MK?

There isn't a single character in the game, no matter how good, that could beat him right now. And unless the metagame progresses quickly, they never will.

And with MK being hyped as the broken bisonskie he is, no one will ever use another character.

He's too dominant, both in game and out.

5 MK's in the top places in a tourney? Dominance isn't always just a matter of better characters. Saturation is important too.

I've seen him 3 stocking a sandbagging Santi. What an achievement. Have you ever seen m2k 3 stocking a similarily skilled player consistently?

In Melee he often 2 stocked Pc Chris. And that was at a time, when Melee wasn't evolving as much anymore. There were no "secret tricks" left. They were all found. We knew which players were pros and which not (we don't know yet in Brawl btw, the game is still too young) and PC was one of them.

Ummm, that tournament where he 3 stocked Santi (who wasn't sandbagging), he 3 stocked everyone in that entire tournament he played at least once, including Hylian.

I was there ;)

But this early in Melee's life, Marth was not NEAR as dominant. Mk is off to an early, dominant lead, and unless someone in the cast has a freaking AMAZING secret up their sleeve, MK's metagame will get to be leaps and bounds above everyone else's. He's too prolific in tournaments, so until people start picking up other chars, he will remain in the lead.

I'm afraid, though I don't like to say it, that a ban on MK may be the only way to progress other characters. Then we could un-ban him...

But hopefully it will never happen.

People were saying exactly the same thing about Sheik in early Melee

But this early in Melee's life, Marth was not NEAR as dominant.
There really haven't been many, or any, national tournaments in Brawl. However, in the regional tournaments, we've seen a variety of characters since August, including Wario, D3, Diddy, and Lucario, beating the best MK's from those respective regions.

In the first 8 national/regional (100+ person) Melee tournaments, Marth won or placed 2nd at ALL of them.

For example, HOBO 11 is often used as evidence that MK should be banned, but look at the results again:
1: M2K (meta)
2: Azen (lucario/meta)
3: Lee (meta)
4: DMG (wario
5: DSF (snake/meta)
5: Roy_R (marth)
7: Edrees (peach)
7: Hylian (GW/meta?)

There are 7 characters represented in the top 8.

Lets compare to VLS, the last major Melee tournament in 2007:

1. Azen (Marth)
2. ChuDat (Ice Climbers)
3. KoreanDJ (Sheik)
4. Mew2King (Marth)
5. Drephen (Sheik)
5. PC Chris (Fox/Falco?)
7. Chillin (Fox)
7. Darc (Jigglypuff)
(if any of these players used other characters in top 8 matches please inform me)
That is 6 characters represented in the top 8, maybe less if PC didn't use Falco (need confirmation).
The point you are making, while potentially a valid one, is a straw man argument with these specific results. This is obvious, due to several points

A) you are pointing out how many specific characters are represented in the finals in both tournaments, then going on to laude about how Marth was specifically dominant.

B) What you are NOT doing is taking into account the fact that, while 7 characters are represented in the HOBO 11 finals, there are also 6 metaknight main / secondaries. Compare to VLS, which has a grand total of two marth players. This is a self-defeating argument you set forth.

clarificational addendum: Yes, after looking at the numbers you posted, you could make a point about how Marth was in the top 3 at every large scale tourney in '07. This doesn't, however, deny the fact that, at the top echelon of play, there is potential for other characters to excel, even win. Shiek, Fox, Falco, even Jigglypuff. The current metagame of Brawl more or less demands the use of MK, to battle MK.

Best character =/= ban worthy
Most definitely. Which is why no one reasonable ever called for a ban on Sheik.

However, this has no bearing on the situation with MetaKnight because the potential ban against him does not rest solely on the claim "He should be banned because he is the best." None of the primary supporters of the pro-ban argument have ever stated that a character should be banned simply for being the best, or even for being extremely good. There are many other factors that contribute to MetaKnight being ban-worthy, and Sheik did not have many of these qualities. (Inability to be counterpicked, lack of exploitable weaknesses, and so forth.) All of this has been covered in greater detail in the numerous threads discussing the MetaKnight ban.

The Sheik comparison has already been refuted numerous times.
