I always looked up to Bowser. He has continuous dedication and persistence at achieving his life dreams in the face of adversity over the last twenty years. He fails each time, but picks himself up once again and has another go.

What an inspiration.
**** straight. It's the same situation in smash games haha. I think I'll give him a go in brawl ;)

stubborness.. he should just do the vegeta thing and become an ally to mario.. then he will get peach for sure. + he is still king koopa.
Well he's done the whole anti hero thing a few times now. Still never got much love from the princess XD Closest thing he achieved was getting married to peach in Super Paper Mario so I guess over the past 20 years he has gotten closer to his goal step by step.

So I FINALLY got around to playing this game again (had 7 stars up until about a month ago). Actually went out and got all 242 stars and I've gotta say, the last star was really hard and frustrating. Took me about 3 hours.

Skimmed through the thread a bit and I really lol how Alzi said this game was definitely in the top 5 games of all time. It has some serious camera problems. I actually like SMG 1 and SMG 2 about the same, I liked the stages a bit more in SMG 1.

SMG2 is probably legitly my most favourite game of all time, tied only with SMG1. I honestly can't decide which I enjoyed more.

What are you on about, it has zero camera problems. Which puts it above 100% of all other 3D platformers, and above 100% of other 3D action games.

Last star took me around that long too, except I did it over 3 days or so. Didn't get as frustrated, but was very very annoyed when I failed just at the last boomerang. Loved the challenge the entire way.

SMG2 took the concept of the first game and was asked to come up with 200+ unique, never-before-seen platforming ideas.

90% of the time they don't let you change the camera, and when you can, you can only change it in four directions (sometimes they only let you change it in 2 directions). Didn't sunshine have 360 control with the C-stick?

Also in some stages (Only specific stage I can remember is against some spider boss in SMG 1 and you're in like a circular thing) the camera just completely screws you up. You'll be holding right on the control stick to run and then all of a sudden holding right won't do anything and you'll have to hold down (or up) on the control stick to run.

Also, stars (mainly green stars) will be weird places and you really need to change the camera in order to see where you are in relation to the star and it just won't let move the camera, so you have to jump blindly and hope you touch the star. Just thought, this game would massively benefit from being in 3D because of this problem.

dumb?
dumb for making a game with a camera angle that 1 single person (if he can be called that) in the world has complained about?

I enjoyed SMG1 more. It was actually original. SMG2 was a rip off of one, they used the exact same 'planets' in like 50% of the stages. It felt like a rush job.

1 was fresh new, the mechanics were great. 2 WOULD be the better game if it came first, but as it stands, it wasn't and the material it took from the first was over the top. Even one of the names of the star was the same as one of the first's, except for the fact that in one it was (because I can't remember the name i'll just use numbers) 1 2 but in SMG2 it was 2 1. (now that I think about it more i think in 1 it was called stone cyclone and in 2 it was called cyclone stone) It was rather stupid because it was the exact same 'planet' or 'galaxy' or whatever. (god i really hate how they fkd up what everything was called)

Besides the originality number 1 had, it also had Ice Mario. 2 may have had Yoshi, and it was pleasantly fun. It just felt like an expansion pack than a new game.

Not many people see it my way though, and it could have something to do with the fact I boguht them at the same time and played through 1 and 2 straight after each other, but it allowed me to see the average job done in 2.

That said, I liked 2 a lot. It was great, but it got beat out by it's predecessor.

smg2 was by all standards better. but playing them side by side showed how much smg ripped off smg1 with it's actual content and design. If it came first it would be better than 1, because it's technically better, it's just that 1 did it first. 2 wasn't surprising or innovative compared to the first.

number 1 changed how we saw things. 2 just expanded on it, it didn't revolutionize anything. (imo)

playing them side by side showed that 2 was better. it just wasnt anything new by that stage. it had already been done.

I would have perfered mario to have a new genre instead of doing the same theme again, thats what kinda made it a repeat and made it seem boring for me. There wasnt anything new. But yeah, as scott said, the game would have been alot better if the second one was the first game to come out.

This game has the same camera system as galaxy 1 which is to say it has the worst camera ever. If you disagree then that means you dont know what a camera is.

It was also way too easy, I just finished the "Grand Master Galaxy" on "The Perfect Run" mission since my bro unlocked it yesterday and I give it a 5/10 for difficulty. Super Guide is a good reason why Nintendo should be willing to introduce some stages that are actually difficult, it satisfies the core gamer and allows casual gamers to get past a brick wall in their gameplay. Unfortunately, the only part of this game that can be deemed difficult is adjusting to its bad physics and horrendous camera control.

Coincidentally, while Richard was doing the final galaxy yesterday I was on my 8 hour spree of trying to beat the end boss in FFXIII on an NCU challenge without using Elixers. Eventually I caved in and turned the game off...for the third time. This is the kind of difficulty I crave :)

Yeah I've gotta say, you worded that a bit weird. But yeah I get what you're saying. Only noticed 1 or 2 planets that were re used, but thats probably cus I played SMG 1 ages ago.

Now that I think about it, I probably like SMG 1 more, although the green stars in SMG 2 was better than re doing the WHOLE game just with Luigi.

That’s funny, because almost 100% of the time I didn’t need to change the camera at all. In my experience, the camera was always cleverly planted where Mario was, I always knew where my bearings where, the shots were placed in a way so I always knew where I needed to go next, and on top of that, some sections peeled away to reveal the majesty of the level - Fluffy Bluff comes to mind.

For your Spider boss example, of course, holding up makes perfect sense. You’re now running vertical across the screen. Never had an issue. Some people mentioned that Green Stars were placed off camera. Dude. That was the point. The entire idea was for you to make a leap of faith off a risky area to grab the star based on its sound alone. They were called “hidden” for a reason.

The ‘not original’ complaints are very, very perplexing to me. It never once tried to advertise itself as anything more than the collaboration of hundreds of expanded ideas off the Galaxy framework. For goodness’ sake, it has a TWO at the end (and as you are all aware, Nintendo usually tags a new name on their sequels, not assign numbers). I guess people’s misguided expectations came into play, and wanted a completely new-gen platform experience. Galaxy 1 was all sorts of incredible and Nintendo goes beyond to give you MORE of that incredible-y-ness (not a word aye). It hit the perfect note:

- Here’s a star.
- This star is a brand new idea to platforming that hasn’t been done or seen before.
- Let’s make it super fun and interesting.
- Just before the idea gets boring, we finished the level! YAY!
- (now let's never revisit that old idea ever again and move to MORE IDEAS!!)
- Never get bored, always interested pace, in marvellous joyful worlds.

That is the ‘formula’ of Galaxy 2.

Wouldn’t even say that the planets were reused. They took up one or two stars for each throwback galaxy, and there were honestly maybe three or four tops. That’s maybe ten stars, of one hundred and twenty. Even reuse of Ice/Fire Marios weren’t done too much.

What’s also kind of absurd is the concept that since 1 came first, then 2 coming out made it completely worthless. Despite being more interesting from an objective standpoint. Timeframe should never be used to judge quality in the present. So I’m sorry, both Galaxy games are far more interesting than Mario 64.

As for the complaints of it being easy, I suppose that’s a gaming lifestyle thing. I found the difficulty of Galaxy in perfect balance – kept me motivated enough to keep re-attempting the level, but never got overwhelming to the point where I just said “**** this, not worth my time”. I just don’t have the time or motivation to invest 8 hours in one mundane task to check something off. Galaxy brought a joyous experience, and that’s all we care about, isn’t it?

PS: that FFXIII challenge is a difficulty that you self-imposed. You could easily just place similar restrictions to a platformer. If you had to place constraints like so, then the original game probably wasn’t all that difficult either. Strange to complain about an easy game in one, and give another a pass.

PPS: LMFAO Dekar, that was unexpectedly hilarious. <3

PPPS: holy wow, this is a much longer post than I originally intended.

Yeah I agree with everything Unreon said minus the camera part. Its true the camera shows you where you need to go next but thats not the problem with it. The problem is there are numerous instances where you need to know the depth of an item/star/platform/object/enemy in the third dimension but because the game doesnt allow you to move the camera around, you cant know where it is. This is particularly problematic with the green stars, I saw Richard literally long jump to a star only to go straight past it because he was in front of it since the camera limited his view to the 2D plane.

Example: A 2D view of Mario (M) and the star (S)

-------------
M----------S
-------------

Birdseye View:

-------------S
--------------
M-------------

A smash related example is when you die from a star KO. It looks like in Smash when you get Star KO'd you get knocked into the background and then you fall downwards while getting smaller until you disappear. This is actually a clever illusion and this is not what happens at all. If you turn off camera restrictions you'll find that what actually happens is that from the moment you leave the stages boundries, your character very rapidly is pushed deeper into the third dimension. This gives the illusion that your getting smaller (because your getting further away) and at the same time makes it look like your falling.

The only reason you dont realise that this is the way you from a star KO is because you dont have free movement of the camera. The same exact problem applies to MG2. I honestly dont understand how continuous 360 degree camera control (sunshine) has camera issues whereas the occasional 4 direction/2 direction camera control (galaxy) does not. I never had any camera issues in Sunshine O.O

Great post Unreon :)
lovin' the way you enjoy your games <3

@Corpse: In Sunshine the Camera always gets stuck on things. There was that theme park level where you had to climb up a wall of wire frames to get to some electric thing (thats as descriptive as my memory can remember) and every time you jumped to another wire frame the camera would get stuck o the other side of the wall. I remember that one level was such a massive troll, although at other times the 360 camera was pretty good, but issues like that came along enough to let it down. The camera was pretty stupid :/

Im going to play it right now.

Sunshines one of my favourite games because its so small easy and simple and the atmosphere is so realaxed. I mean the Galaxies might have been more fun and epic and wowowow, but Sunshine is probably one of the most replayable games for me, so good <3

OMG I just put Sunshine in my Wii for the first time ever because Soxxie's bro assured me I would enjoy it. (When I was younger I kind of boycotted the game because it wasn't the 'same' as Mario64.)

Funny timing. Btw Soxxie's brother said the game was amazing EXCEPT for the camera lol.

The thing with the camera in Sunshine is that you have to babysit it.
I mean you can get perfect viewing with it most the time but you have to steer it precisely whilst doing jumps and stuff.
It's actually a pretty bad camera but once it becomes natural to flick up the C stick and spin it or something every time you move at all you get good angles.

Except that level where it always gets stuck on the bloody wall.

I remember that I hated the first world in Sunshine so boring but Ricco harbour and onwards I love it.

Rico Harbour was always my favourite level. Especially when you started climbing grates.

After that it's the theme park level.

FLUDD-less levels were really fantastic and trippy as well.

Sunshine is underrated. Not many people liked it apparently.

EDIT: Yeah I really liked the FLUDD-less levels too.

EDIT: Just wondering if this only happens to me because I'm running the game off the USB or something, but for some of the "Luigi staff ghosts", when you activate it, he'll just run around a bit and then just sleep on the floor.

the luigi ghosts take you somewhere that has a secret. so if you've already got what's there it might just look glitched. unless you already knew that and he's literally not taking you anywhere.

Nah I think its glitched on usb, when I play the level..uhh the one with the massive cogs and such, luigi just runs a little on the spot, backflips on top of the fire near the beginning and hovers there

Okies after playing Sunshine for the last couple of days it's painfully obvious that the camera is the worst part of this game. Otherwise I'm loving this sh**. I want to leave work right now and go home to play it.
