Every Metal Gear game has a cardboard box (or several cardboard boxes) as an item you can use to hide in so that guards just pass you by and think it's just a box. Boxes are also labeled with locations that they are taken to if put on a cargo truck, so if you're hiding in a box while inside a truck, you'll be taken to whatever location is written on the box.

The box is sort of a Metal Gear signature.
