...I feel like I missed something.

Anyway, I've been hearing a lot of rumblings about a possible Direct within the next week or so. I don't want to get my hopes up, but that would be absolutely glorious.

I know a lot of people think that characters like Ridley and K. Rool are better E3 candidates, but I think that Sakurai's selection for these first few newcomers can put those qualms to rest. While Mega Man was an ideal E3 reveal, WFT and (arguably) Villager aren't. On the flip side of things, a lot of people expected Little Mac to be perfect E3 fuel, as well. And then he ended up popping up out of nowhere. So I wouldn't be surprised if K. Rool was announced at E3 or in a Direct.

I'm hoping for the Direct, myself. Call me impatient...but I want to see him now.

One of the reasons I do find it plausible we'd get K. Rool or Ridley not at E3 is because Sakurai seemed to have a mix of newcomers at last E3.

MegaMan the fan favorite.
Villager to prove any character can have a set..
Wii Fit Trainer because... speculate this game now!

Their playstyles are all totally different too, so I can see a variety of characters specifically revealed at E3 to make Smash 4 appeal to as many players as it can. I don't think Sakurai needs K. Rool, Ridley and Mewtwo to accomplish that, he just needs one of them to be the "villain" rep. Not that any are less valued, but he could save the hype for a later time when it's needed.

Middle of April is our best bet for a Direct and thusly a newcomer.
I disagree, mainly because I think that we'll get a veteran in late April. Also, the middle of April IMO is maybe a little too close to E3, especially since I think we'll get 3 characters confirmed before E3 (1 newcomer and 2 veterans), bringing our total characters confirmed at E3 to 27 (or 1 more than Melee). Something about the number 27 before E3 is magical, given how it is more characters than Melee. I think once we reach 40 confirmed characters, that "magical" feeling will increase tenfold.
I don't think it really has much to do with the financial period ending. The main directs are bimonthly anyway.
Well Nintendo always has had something revealed in April or May (remember when E3 was in May?) to make investors feel good. That combined with their "every other month" approach to directs and the fact we haven't gotten a single newly confirmed character of any sorts in a month makes it all seem like a perfect storm. I could be wrong, of course.
But regardless of the timing, I'm placing my bets on Takamaru. Ridley and K. Rool seem more like E3 material.
While I disagree with your conclusion, I see your logic behind it, I respect your logic behind it, and I love the build up to it.

I can't help but think think we're gonna get a "fan favorite" again next, like Little Mac and what Rosalina was being built to be (in part thanks to Mario 3D World). While Takamaru may fit that mold, I dunno, I think we're going to get either a much more popular character, or a much more modern character. Obviously it won't be a 3rd party character and obviously not Miis (that will be for E3). That leaves basically leaves Ridley and K. Rool as 2 of the few characters that I think could easily happen then, as well as at E3. I'd lump Palutena in there too, actually.

On top of that, K. Rool and Ridley, reveal-date and reveal decision-wise, are rather interchangeable in regards to when/how they will be revealed and reacted to. I relate it similarly to the reactions to Peach and Bowser in Melee, or Wario, Dedede, and Diddy in Brawl.

After thinking it over for a bit I don't think characters like K. Rool or Ridley would be the best E3 choices. Yeah they're heavily requested among the core Smash fandom, but with a high-profile event like E3 is it really the best choice to try and appeal to the dedicated Smash fans that were probably going to buy the game in the first place? The Smash site and the Nintendo Directs are there for the people who are closely following the game and hoping for specific characters, so why give them E3 as well when they can use that opportunity to try and draw in a larger audience that wouldn't have cared about the game otherwise? I'd say one character that's popular among Smash fans is pretty much a guarantee, like Mega Man last year, but anybody who expects K. Rool, Ridley, Mewtwo and Palutena to all be revealed at once come E3 is just setting themselves up for disappointment (not talking about anybody specifically in here, but I've seen a lot of this in discussions and it's pretty silly)

I hope you're right. I just know that site reveals have no impact on Direct reveals, in fact there's usually two characters announced right next to each other. I would imagine we'll get another veteran reveal before the next direct and then a newcomer. What's the earliest a Direct has ever been in a month?

Also the "around the world" part is debatable since Metroid is almost unheard of in Japan
Japan's population is shrinking, and with gaming globalizing, Japan now means less in the gaming world than ever. Also, so far we've gotten no clearly "Japan 1st" characters like we did in Melee or Brawl. If anything, we've gotten popular Western characters 1st, like Mega Man and Little Mac, who are far more popular in the West than in Japan.

I think reveals do indicate the timing of the newcomers (we got like 3 veterans in a span of like 4 weeks before Rosalina, and something similar with Little Mac), and I do think they have an impact on Direct reveals. Smash right now is the #2 game behind Mario Kart 8 Nintendo is promoting, and it's not too far behind it. Once June hits, it's Smash 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Zelda, Mario, X, and whatever Retro is working on won't even touch the hype, since those games will probably be out for another year after E3.

As for the earliest Direct, we got the Little Mac one early in February, so there's that. Actually, it was only about 7 weeks between Rosalina and Little Mac.

This is partly why I'm expecting someone like Pac-Man or Mii (or both.) Sakurai would be able to explain such character choices in interviews and go into further details, something he otherwise doesn't seem to do in Nintendo Directs, and I imagine a 3rd party and a customizable character would require some explaining. They'd also surely cause a lot of attention around the web. Meanwhile, there wouldn't be as much to talk about if they showed K. Rool or Ridley, it'd be obvious to everyone why they were chosen, and they mostly catter to the hardcore Nintendo fans too.

Imagine being a typical gamer, someone who likes Nintendo games but doesn't follow them very closely. What article would grab your attention first: "Pac-Man confirmed for Super Smash Bros." or "K. Rool confirmed for Super Smash Bros."? For us it's obvious that we'd love K. Rool the most, but for the general casual audience Pac-Man simply gets the most attention. It's a gaming icon who's going to clash up against other iconic gaming icons. Meanwhile, K. Rool and Ridley are two of the characters which makes us check the website each and every day, it's very beneficial to keep them at bay for as long as possible. So while someone like Pac-Man and Mii might not be the most hype reveals for us hardcore Smash fans, they would be so for the general audience, meanwhile Sakurai will keep toying with us big-time Smash fans for as long as possible until he eventually reveals the characters we're hyped for, because he knows we're going to stay anyways.

Seriously though, it makes me a little more excited that DKL is getting a re-release, even if it means probably nithing for our King.
Sure it does; it means that belly flop maneuver can't be ignored. :troll:

I love you. (No homo XD)

Anyway, I'm still waiting for a NA release date for DKL on 3DS
I really hope it's not like Wario Land 3's wait. No idea why it took so long.

Assuming we do get a Direct next week, I doubt we'll see our King in it. Yeah, it's been discussed as to why saving the characters with the most hype for E3 is not set in stone, but I don't know. If you want to drum up hype, why not do it when the most people are watching? I know plenty of people who want Ridley and K. Rool, but aren't really following the development right now.

No K. Rool moveset is complete without his belly flop.

No, really, it's a versatile move option that could be mapped to a whole handful of inputs. A D-Air, an F-Smash, a running belly flop for a Dash Attack, a throw, or even some Special for a stretch.

Also in relation to Donkey Kong Land, I think K. Rool's size in that game would be a reasonable size for him in Smash as well.

The Smash 4 confirmed roster of characters has had a serious lack of villains and heavyweights. Ridley seems a bit less realistic than K.Rool because of the "scaling size issue". Ridley is huge and although K.Rool is a fatty, he can be adjusted for Smash play. I am expecting him in the game, and will be extremely disappointed if he is not included. I had prayed for him in Brawl and it never happened, also I would love to see Ganondorf return and possibly have another lightweight villain (bowser jr (masked) or girahnim - sorry if my spelling sucks))

I gotta disagree man. We had 3 characters revealed at E3 last year, and only 1 was wanted by fans that don't follow smash that much, and that's Mega Man. I'm a really dedicated Smash fan, and I didn't even know the Wii Fit Trainer existed. That was completely out of the blue.

We got the Villager, who I think is about as well known as the Villager among video game fans and Nintendo fans as K. Rool (Ridley isn't quite as well known as either of them due to Metroid being probably the most underrated series in the history of forever; the fact Super Metroid hasn't sold over a million copies is a disgrace to humanity, especially since every Call of Booty this day does 10 times that).

There's also the fact that at last years' E3, like Brawl's debut at E3 2006, that none of the newcomers were like one another. Meta Knight, Pit, ZSS, Wario, and Snake all aimed at different audiences, and attracted different kinds of fans. The Villager, Mega Man, and the WFT all did that as well. We should expect the same thing at E3 this year.

Quite frankly, I think Miis and Pac-Man are inevitably gonna be confirmed at E3. Miis capture the casual new age Nintendo audience, whereas Pac-Man captures the old school gamer love, fans of Namco Bandai, and maybe the kid fans of his adventure game. So who would the 3rd character be=??? Someone who captures a different audience, and yet, captures the imagination of non-smash fans like smash characters beforehand. Ridley, Palutena, and I think especially K. Rool accomplish that.

I was more adressing the people expecting nothing but highly supported newcomers in the Smash fanbase. One is highly likely, but any more is overkill and we're more likely to get characters like WFT and Villager.

I'd say personally I think Mewtwo is the best choice for an E3 reveal among "The Elite Four (- Little Mac) since he'd appeal to both casual audiences and the core Smash fanbase alike.

Why is everyone saying only 3 newcomers again? Just because there was 3 last year doesn't mean there has to be only 3 this time around.

So! I did a little digging and finally saw this belly flop of K. Rool's in action. I gotta say, it's one of the greatest things I've ever seen. This HAS to be in his moveset.

Of course!

Hm, anyone thinking or hoping K. Rool will be added to the "villains taking over the e-shop" thing when DKL comes out later? Would make sense depending on how long they're gonna have that thing on there.

I've been curious about that. Is it just this short promotional gig, or is it a longer Year of Luigi sort of advertisement?

I don't expect to see K. Rool added to that unless he's confirmed for either Smash or a new DK game, since him being teased would spoil his reappearance somewhere. In comparison, Ridley's presence in Smash and most likely the next Metroid is no surprise to anyone, it's just a matter of what role he'll have.

Could someone show me K. Rool's belly-flop in action? I want to see it in all of it's glory.

Anyways, just wanted to point out that K. Rool would probably be the only character where a level usually associated with him (Gang-Plank Galleon) showed off before any mention of him would make me 100% certain he's playable. Besides maybe the Punch-Out Arena, Pyrosphere and the Mario galaxy stage I feel could of passed off as a predicable Samus/Mario stage respectively. However, with DKCReturns out and about, and with many stages from there to choose from, going all the way back to DKC root's and pulling out Gang-Plank Galleon would be way more then a mere coincidence.

Here's the belly flop in all of its girthy glory. He starts using it about halfway through.

Upon a rewatch, I'd resize K. Rool up just a tad from his size in this video so he's taller than DK. Otherwise, I think this is in the ballpark of the size he should be in Smash.

Ah, I see. that would be a pretty neat addition to his moveset. Though as noted, his size in DK Land is way too small. He does need to be taller the DK (and hopefully a tad taller then Bowser).

I'm curious how K. Rool would stack up next to Dedede girth-wise. Would he be fatter or slimmer compared to? Part of me wants to say slightly fatter but Dedede's pretty much massive in every respect. Cartoonish-ly so.

That reminds me of his size in DKC1. You could fit about 2 DK's worth in that bod.

I actually think if the Smash development team was smart, they'd reveal Mewtwo, Snake, Pac-Man, Miis, and either K. Rool, Ridley, or Palutena at E3 (and probably one of those same 3 before E3), as well as at least a good half dozen veterans (specifically all of the original 12, ZSS, Sheik, and Wario).

That way the Smash d

Last year most people, myself included, thought we would get 2, tops. We were lucky to get 3. If we get 3 we'll be lucky again. Besides, we're inevitably gonna get newcomers confirmed after E3. Heck, most of us thought of the veterans we'd only see Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, and Pikachu, and we got that plus 4 more vets.

Bigger than DK for one thing, and likely as fat or slightly fatter than Dedede. But actually a lot bigger because K. Rool is obviously taller.

He'd be quite comparable to how Bowser looks now, only more defined. That is if Sakurai goes the sane route of emulating his DKC look over the dreadful Paon one.

This is a thing: The King K.Rool cocktail

Ingredients:
1 oz. Crown Royal Whiskey
1.5 oz. Melon Liqueur
1 oz. Sweet and sour mix
Sprite
Lemon wedge

Directions: Mix the whiskey, melon liqueur, and sweet and sour mix in a lowball glass, over ice. Top off with Sprite and a lemon wedge as a garnish.

This nice summer drink is perfect for ruling your kremlings from your pirate ship. Refreshing melon mixes well with the lime flavor and the golden crown gives it a nice kick.
I'd make one myself. But I don't drink. lol

Well, E3 last year was interesting, but E3 2012 was lackluster. I have high hopes for Nintendo this year.

Saving this thread from being below Dixie's. XD :troll:

Hmmm. I've given it some thought, and the release of DKL (and if we're lucky, DKC1) could bode very well for our King. Especially since Dixie isn't in DKL or DKC1.

Not to be "that guy", but if they eventually re-release DKL 2 and 3 as well in addition to the first one (why wouldn't they when they had all three DKC's on VC before?), it'll pretty much bode as well for Dixie too. I guess on that note,

When it comes to Dixie's chances in general, I think she's missed the boat by having solo Diddy again. I just can't see her getting in as her own character with the whole uniqueness thing Sakurai is shooting for. It seems somewhat inconceivable to me that Sakurai would look over the unique attributes all the available DK candidates possess, and pick Dixie over K. Rool. While I'm certain she could have a fun and original moveset, the Kremling king has a lot more potential imo.

To be fair, she was planned to be in Brawl.

To be even more fair, I personally think this franchise has a good chance of getting two newcomers so I don't see Dixie and K. Rool competing with each other, per se.
