Melee in my opinion is one of if not the greatest game to ever be created. Its deep, complex and requires an immense amount of think. But to the non gamers its just another videogame.

I can't count the number of times I've been taunted, ridiculed and made fun of for, watching a smash video or even talking about it. I by no means talk about it a lot, but still ppl manage to throw there worthless 2 cents in and start talking mad crap like, "why are you wasting your time watching a video of a video game?" or if they see my watching a smashvideo; it's "Woooow really?"

I usually say something along the lines of. "This is something i enjoy, I'm not hurting you or anyone else so get off my nutz." Sometimes I'll even try to explain my love for the game, but it seems like they're to stupid to comprehend someone liking something they don't to such an extent.

How do some of you deal with all the haters?

I don't have that problem. In fact, sometimes when I'm watching a smash video, a random passer by will see it and go "Hey, I remember that game. That was fun". Note that I live in an area with no smash players that I know of, beside my self.

^^^ There's some video on Youtube with some guy beating classic mode with his feet.

I just tell them to play me if there is a setup handy, or I show them a video of a crowd reaction from a big tourney match.

I learned how to make it just hard to make fun of me if you say i'm dumb i'll argee but not for their reasons. If they say it's all about mashing buttons you show them the movements be calm at all times. Make it so they can't hurt you/outsmart you.

play off their words if they say melee is mashing random buttons ask if that;s how shooters are and you can talk about all the jerking at tomes to aim and claim if melee's rnaodm buttons say that's mindless buttons also. Or talk about how you learn most of this stuff from muscle memory soa lot of it is using techs to space and control the match like show in a H box video how he forces them to the side of the stage where they have near no options and then keeps pressuring them till they f*** up.

show why darkrain did what he did. Show habit people do and it will become much more clear.

Most of my friends think smash is the stupidest game ever. And I'm like, "Play it with me!" and they go "Alright."
And then they go "WHOA SMASH IS SO COOL HOW DO YOU MOVE SO FAST?!"

If you think they're worth explaining it to, like if they're friends or something, then explain why smash is great to them.

If they aren't, just ignore them then. What kind of situations are you in anyway where you're watching smash vids in public and random people come and make fun of you?

I've never been given crap about this game.

Anyway just forget them. There are always ignorant morons who know nothing about a game (or genre of music, or anything really) and go on to make stupid, unbased remarks because of their lack of knowledge and sheer stupidity. Don't worry. SSBM is arguably the best game evah

The rebuttals I'm hearing from the posters here fall on deaf ears 90% of the time. Someone who doesn't play the game or care to won't take a money match from you, nor will they care if you use a bunch of our silly made up words (because, let's face it, that's what they are). They don't care if you beat them at it over and over because you've played dozens, maybe hundreds of hours and they haven't. So, even if Melee WAS just a button mashy game, you should be beating them. None of these things will ever convince them.

As Katt Williams says "What do you think a hater's job is? To ****in' hate. Now let them do their god**** job!" Some will "get" it, some won't. Nothing we can do about that accept offer to show them if they're interested.

Edit: In reality, we gotta understand that all (read: most) fighting games have their own form of depth and strategy. Nothing upsets me more than to hear people talk about how, say, Tekken is a great, deep, intense series, but Street Fighter is a crappy, easy, party game. Or, as this kid I know once said, "Soul Caliber?! Don't EVER bring that button-mashing disgrace into conversation in my presence!" Being a hater one way or the other always shows a lack of class and open-mindedness, be it in terms of recreation, politics, religion, or anything else.

I have this problem all the time, in fact I actually lost a friend because he thought something along the lines of "I've grown out of video games" I only know one or two people that actually know why I always play smash or watch videos of it all the time, that is, know why and understand it.

When people ask me why I watch videos of smash, I ask them why they watch sports on tv.
Its one of my common rebuttals, I get the ol' "video games are a waste of time, not at all productive" I usually rebut with "Im developing eye hand coordination and thinking strategies, I'm actually exercising my brain here, when you sit on your *** and watch tv for twelve hours your just zoning out." And this results in them suddenly going quiet and walking away in shame...sooooo satisfying. But seriously, if you get this kind of crap from people just remind them that video games are far more productive than watching tv is. (unlesss your playing heavy rain...thats basically the same thing)

Haters are a lot like trolls, you lose when you get defensive and emotional.

qft

The games themselves might not be complex, but the players will develop a metagame that is competitive and deep.

This

one night when I was at my friends, enjoying some Fat Tire watching the Zhu v Armada matches from Apex, and some god **** texas jock looked and said "I don't know man, I think I'd **** them, they don't look that good", I challenged him to a $50 MM, then he pussed out saying he forgot the controls. I questioned why he was so confident going against some of the worlds best, then got all nervous just playing me. He ended up leaving butt hurt with his girlfriend.

then I remembered I don't have a girlfriend and I cried.

But yeah just offer a MM, usually shuts them up pretty quick.

Every fighting game that has a competitive community is a deep enough game for anyone that's good at it to curbstomp anyone that's not good.

I good thing to do is to draw the parallel between Melee and soccer. A lot of people enjoy watching soccer (or any other popular sport) on TV. This is wildspread and accepted, so just draw the parallel with Melee.

Tell them that in the end it's just watching a game between two players, like tennis. The rules are simple, but every match is different, so it's always entertaining to watch.

If they don't understand past this point you are losing your time.

tbh I try to not advertise the fact that I'm into competitive smash, or at least I try not to watch Smash vids in front of people that have no interest in the game.

I don't rub it in people's faces, but I'm not in the closet about smash or anything...

The trick is to never utter a word about smash around people that aren't interested. It's like talking about football around someone who has absolutely no knowledge or no interest in the sport. You become one of those 'football people'.

But, you make it clear that you play the game a lot, and you're always available to beat so-and-so's annoying friend that thinks they're so good.

That's basically my attitude towards the situation, BEES (By the way, I've always liked your username/avatar. Bees are the ****)

But yeah, my non-smash playing friends know I play and that I'm better than the average joe, but I'm not gonna try to show them Apex vids, nah meen? (I did show them an Isai 64 vid, but it was sort of relevant)

I mean, umad?

theres no such thing as productive time.

your just wasting it doing stuff you dont want to do so you can do what you do want to do.
Yeah, it's funny how people say "Hey that's a waste of time!" But then you realize... hey I'm wasting time by working 8 hours a day. Literally it WASTES.

We shouldn't 'waste' all our lives doing things we DON'T want to do, because that's just a waste of time. lol.

I mean ... **** it's so hard but like your sentence explained everything lol.

Work > get payed > Buy food/stuff you want/music/girl/etc > have fun > go to sleep > go back to work.

It is somewhat equivalent to watching sports, only way less mainstream. On the plus side everyone has the capacity to compete in it themselves.

So if the same person who says "Woow really?!" is a football nut then you could try to make that comparison.

I've wholly avoided this situation by not watching smash videos in public places >__>

Some day I will be good enough to deserve a name this cool.
Bees is an awesome name what you talkin bout???

Also, I can beat people who don't compete... But I don't feel good about that. I Want to do super awesome at tournies lol.

Also sometimes a public place would be better for people with crappy or NO computers.. (a library or college library)

Lol haters?
who hates on melee?

if anyone hated on melee I'd first laugh in their face
then when I regained my composure I'd make sure they weren't 1) ******** 2) joking

if neither is the case
there are an infinite number of aspects of melee you could bring up that they not only couldn't refute, but probably couldn't even understand.

If they're not left flabbergasted, taken aback, and in all around dismay at their ignorance, and are still insisting melee is a bad game. They are real life trolls, and you can punch them in the face. There is no law against punching trolls in the face.

The problem for me with Melee is that it gives off the "nerd" aura. Video games have yet to be accepted as legitimate competitive activities.
