To be a top contender? Is it more important to be just a fast/efficient player or is moonwalk with fox/falco, shdl, consistent waveshine/upsmash really important to be a top player?

For the most part so far after training since October I have been playing really fast, I have fast fingers, but I still can't do a lot of those technical abilities. Is the focus more on spacing, fast response, efficient well thought out moves, knowing the ending lag moves, perfect l-cancels, wavedash when necessary or is it vice versca like is it more important to become innovative and do flash moves like waveshine off platforms to bairs or other pro technical advanced stuff like Eggz or Silent Wolf or something?

The more technical you are, the higher the ceiling is for your potential as a player.

Its as simple as that really.

You have to be technical enough to do what your mind tells you to. like "ok, now if I shine back air him, I win" or "if I can drillshine him into the wall I take a stock" you should be able to do it

Well, you certainly have to be able to l-cancel and wavedash 100% of the time (especially l-cancel).
But it does depend on the character you are using.

Basically, what JPOBS said. The more comfortable you are with your tech skill, the more options you have, the more potential you have to be good. Less tech skill = limiting yourself.

If you use Jigglypuff you don't need tech, just smarts. Just kidding. : D

Mindgames is what truly will get you victory. Meaning, adapting. Tech skill will help you adapt, the better it is the more options you have.

It probably kinda depends on what player you ask. I have a super high standard of tech skill more than a lot of people. And there are others with a realativley low standard like azen or something lol. Just play a lot practice and win. :) don't over complicate things. You wasted time posting this instead of practicing ur tech skill or driving to a friends to play some more. ;)

You don't necessarily need the flash exhibited by SilentWolf, Lovage, etc. What you do need is the technical consistency that Mango, M2K (better before brawl), Armada etc. have. Because they are so consistent they are more able to focus on outsmarting their opponents. JPOBS is completely correct as well.

Be 100% consistent with wavedashing, wavelanding, and L canceling.

From there the other tech you need will come naturally if you're looking to maximize your % output.

Also you need a STRONG mindset. And patience in a match for money. ANYTHING goes, even time out.

When you say top contender do you mean like one of the top 10 players in the world?

Mango's fox uses tech skill the most effectively I think. Watch him and you should be able to figure out what you need to be able to do.

Technical consistency is a million times more important than technical skill and being able to read your opponent is a billion times more important than technical consistency.

You only need enough tech skill to be able to punish your opponents how you want to. Nothing more. But to figure out how much that is you need to be able to read them first. So focus on that.

How much tech skill DO YOU need? You need enough to do what you need to do. I don't need much tech skill to play as fox as slient wolf does he plays different, everyone has different amounts needs.

being technical increases your boundaries as a player, but it also depends what character you use. a character like fox will require ALOT of techskill while others like Marth and Peach ehhh not so much...

It's pretty much been covered by the others. I basically think of it like this:

The more tech skill you have, the more flexible you are with your options.

While some things players like SW or Dark do may seem overly flashy, they still have a use in doing them, and the advantage of the things they do being unique makes it unexpected.

Think of playing smash as like building a house. Your construction knowledge and the blueprints are how well you are mentally, at reading, smash experience, etc. while your tech skill are the tools you have on hand to accomplish the task. A nailgun gets things done much more efficiently than a hammer and bucket of nails. Just as important is knowing how to use it correctly.

You need a good balance of tech skill and mental ability to play well.

Tech skill = being able to interact with the game. That means that if you make a decision, you execute it correctly.

You do NOT need a high tech ceiling to be a top player at this game. What you need more than anything is technical *consistency*. When you make a decision, you need to perform it properly. You only need to have enough technical skill to give you the options that will let you deal with the other guy's strategy.

Your options must be versatile enough to handle all situations effectively, and you must be able to rely on them. You need things like short hops, l-cancels, wavedashes, shield grabs, etc. because they open up options that actually give you the opportunity to win. They provide spacing and punishment tools that will allow you to play well and make good decisions.

I'll repeat it: technical consistency is more important than your technical ceiling. It gives you options you can rely on and execute time and time again in tournament. In fact, less complicated technical execution also lets you focus more energy on your decision making and increases the odds you will make good decisions.

Not quite.

An experienced carpenter can build a house using a hammer and a bucket of nails. Of course, it's not going to be as good as when he uses proper tools, but he can build one none the less.

But if you hand a nailgun (and the best tools available) to someone who doesn't know a thing about building houses they you would not be able to build anything. Sure a nailgun is more accurate, but if you don't know where to place the nails to begin with accuracy is useless.

Knowing how to use your tools is a lot more important than having a lot of them available to you.

What's awesome is even the best players usually get by with a near total mastery of only most of the elements of the game (obviously wavelanding, l-cancelling, spacing, and combos / chainthrows where applicable), but no match can ever be played in real time by humans with all perfect powershielding, shield-dropping, stuff like many perfect pivot uptilts, taking advantage of every opportunity like aerial interrupting to platforms, platform-cancelling aerials if the opportunity arises, some key edge cancels, etc - Smash is about your flow, about winning the match with what you're proficient at. So get proficient at controlling your character and making it do what you want to do.

Edit: Wobbles nailed the answer to the OP's question

doing what you want your character to do..control of your character.

some people call me technical but i disagree because i dont have enuff control as i want to.

most people will think that silent wolf is the most technical, but at apex when jman was fighting silent wolf

shiz said " jman is more technincal than silent wolf, way more control them him"

i would post more but brother amsah covered the rest..so did phanna
