played smash casually

watched dbr videos

played smash more seriously

i would guess that this is the most common story (and since it sucks, people who follow it don't post it)

though actually the thing i watched that made me want to play more was ken vs isai at MOAST 3

on a serious note on how i got into smash:

I was part of the srk community from 04 or 05 til 08 in nor cal. When i first saw a brawl trailer from e3 on youtube. when i moved down to IVC, I met DC$ in the game room (I was trying to learn marvel at the time) DC$ whooped my *** really bad. Then he showed me melee can be play competively. I thought he was joking and stuff. I was thinking "a party game that can be play competivtely" he told me something like brawl will be amazing or something (I might be wrong cuz i dont really remember, i think it was something like it)Then i looked up a e3 trailer of brawl, when i first saw it, I was thinking "brawl looks amazing" Then i went to go look up brawl matches (like demo gameplay) late at night and found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4YfJ0DFeoI

I didn't know who is ken, m2k, pc and chillin. as i was watching this, I was amazing by ken combo the **** out of chillin. I stayed up the whole night watching melee matches of ken just doing amazing things like ken combo, reverse up b etc.

Then as Brawl came out, I made a smashboard account named jays0nnn, I spend a year trying to get good in it, along the way I met aznforce, Kira, connor and psychomidget (omg THE psychomidget?!) after a year i realize this game is horrible. what kind of game let the camper win? the purpose of a fighting game is to win by beating the crap out of them not by camping. I believe wintergamefest 08 is the last straw of me. I didn't care about people playing metaknight or take me to gay *** stage, I care about how horrible the game is. Then I met kira and aznforce again after wintergamefest. Aznforce took me to psychomidget house and play melee for awhile. while i was there I met mango (who i didn't know at the time) after psychomidget house. everything about smash was in totally different world to me cuz there was wavedash, l cancel and stuff. I had kira trained me for awhile. then i met zhu who trained me by having tech skill. after a year had passed, I beat jdm in tournament, i also beat the roy that beat tgl, I'm 3-2 against tgl, almost beat s2j in a tournament set -Johnny ***** my last stock on ps- (1-2), **** the **** out of aznforce in 2 mm set (which now i have every right to talk **** about his falco/fox) etc.

The rest is history

P.S. I just watch mike Chaos, Dark Prince, Demon Kyo and other players **** talk

then i watched lovage and zoap then i realize in my head

if it aint srk **** talk, it's done

Since '99 with smash 64, next best thing since goldeneye 64 that I played with a group of friends.

I was hyped for melee before its release and even ran the first tournaments here in L.A. back in the day. (check out my join date!) First ever Ken vs Isai set was played on my front lawn lol

I was around pre-Ken, when west coast played with items and east coast no items. Ken showed up as the "Gamesquare National Champion", no respect from the current pros in NorCal/SoCal (MattDezzie crew), money matches began and Ken *****. Ken won TG4, began his biweekly's, I stopped hosting and became part of Ken's crew. Rest is history....Semi retired since late 2006 and now I just lurk honestly, hard to find time to play. Still play every few months with Pedro (Flesheater), melee is too good.

got smash 64 with my n64 for christmas. was into melee later on like most noobs well until 2006, when I read an article in Nintendo Power about the smash community (yeah that one). decided to google Ken to see what came up. Found some vids on youtube. Jaw dropped. the rest is history.

I posted a story that wasn't four paragraphs long and Jeff told me it was cute.

The first tournament match I ever played was against Zhu and we sat there power shielding lasers back and forth at one another. Then I played Isai in 64. 'Nuff said.

I played smash casually like most people did, with all the rolling, spotdodging, and fully charged f-smashes that came with casual play. Visited the SSBM board on gamefaqs to read up on guides, advanced techniques, and what not. Watched shined blind, learned how to l-cancel etc

sidequest time

At this time I also played RO (Ragnarok Online, korean mmo etc), and happened to be in a guild with Zhu's friend; so one day we happened to talk about smash, and he said that his friend could "waveshine Peach across FD." Of course, being the scrub I was, I was amazed that this feat could be pulled off by a human. I then figured out that his house was 10 minutes from mine, so I went over to play.

I remember back in the day I could manage to take off every third game; fast foward to today, and I'm merely a punching bag for Zhu.

heh

time to go to tourneys again

on a side note, nowadays i find being a punching bag ridiculously more fun than beating up on someone at a decent rate

too bad others feel the same way and don't want to indulge me with regular asswhoopings

i used to go over my friend's house and play smash64 all the time but played it like a noob. this was elementary until middle school. i later stopped playing and forgot about smash.

fast forward a few years, during junior year i didn't have class and had free time before marching band practice. a friend usually brought an xbox and we all played halo all the time. one day he was like "**** halo i'm bringing smash". he brought melee and we played all the time. i chose marth since he was blue and had a sword. eventually, alan (aesis) was in my morning class and took melee and was playing with vince (BoA) and i forgot who else. i asked if i could play and he said ok. alan ***** me. i was amazed by his movements. so then we noobs were playing smash again and scott comes in and decides to play. he ***** us also.

i wanted to know more about the game, so i started learning the basic advance techniques and watch some youtube videos. then all my other friends started to learn also but most decided to quit since it was too advanced. i used to always skip class and play. i graduated.

i went to college no one played melee. i just played here and there practicing and finally decided joined smashboards. kira made a thread and i responded but he ignored me. =[

i went to my first ucla, same one as tgl. brawl came out and i decided to play it. i quit during summer because i hated it. zhu posted about melee in uci and i took advantage of it where i finally met kira. but i still played brawl. eventually at a ucla i quit and went all melee.

my story is simple:

i saw mtv true life one day (one of my favorite shows to this date) and killa OR was on it. had no idea this game had such a devoted following. that was one of the happiest days of my life.

the rest, as they say, is history. (and semantics.)

looking at some of these, i'm pretty glad i've stuck with melee

like, chris' story is basically the reason why i don't get into other games
(i guess people have their different priorities, but melee's mine)

also i'm glad that i got really into the scene as soon as i did, instead of pussyfooting around

my little cousin got melee in 04. he was like 9 at the time, so he would always call me asking for help unlocking all the characters/ stages etc. he lives like 5 minutes away so during the summer i was practically over every day playing melee

my starting character was captain falcon, but after i got to event match 51 my falcon got wrecked and i couldn't finish event mode . i literally went through every character and couldn't beat it, until i chose ganondorf. i became intoxicated with the forward air, and hit my casual friends with that move so many times that they eventually stopped playing melee with me. this cycle continued throughout my senior year of high school, until i got sick of people not wanting to play with me, so i searched for tournaments online.

i remember seeing a topic in gamefaqs about "malva" being the best smash player in the world (at the time), and i was so going to register an account on gfaqs and post a challenge against this guy, but i had dialup at the time and my competitive fire diminished because of how long it took the **** page to load. in fact, the page timed out and i never made the account. now that i look back on it, it was probably better that this happened, because as you all know malva is isai >.>

from there i signed up to some noooooby smash board, but for some reason HugS was posting on that smash forum as well. i came up with whatisfear as my handle (before the stupid game came out), and HugS told me to gtfo that crappy board and directed me to smashboards. he wanted to money match me at mlg vegas, but for some reason i knew this guy was probably good and politely refused.

from there HugS directed me to the ken westminister biweeklies, and i attended them few and far in between. HugS is pretty much the reason i started playing competitively, even lacing me down with the latest in ganondorf technology, aka triforce of power.

in terms of other old school tournaments i've attended some of the luigi garage san bernardino tournaments, went to both champ combos back in the day, and went to mlg anaheim 05 and 06. i've been around for a while, but i never really attended tournaments on a consistant basis. that trend pretty much continues today, where i randomly come out of hiding and give people trouble in tournament if they underestimate me :p

My school was super cool. I used to play lan games there, but one day the school didn't allow it anymore. I picked up melee and learned smash from L, SFAT, PewPewu, sir lolsifer, and bobby siege[by getting ***** until I improved]

I don't know why but my friend and I got super competitive in playing 1v1 melee in hyrule temple.

i borrowed his gamecube for a week so i could train. I was convinced I would beat him after that one week. I went over to his house for a week again and he ***** me in 1v1 hyrule. I was like WTF. I don't exactly know how but we somehow found L cancelling videos made by WAK. **** videos btw. Then I messaged mikehaze to take me to a tournament. He said P was giving him a ride. P gave me a ride to shuffle & cut. I beat P in crew battles LOL. < yaa P my first tournament.

I had four stock and you had two. You got me down to 1. I remember that clearly! But now you four stock me all the time sigh.

then i played brawl because futile was awesome and i got rides with him.

After a while futile said "**** i can't win anymore money in brawl" so we stopped playing brawl all together. They went back to melee and i joined with them. Then he went back to brawl... now i need to find my own rides lol. =(

I'd be playing brawl but... honestly the community is frustrating and not friendly. I love the melee community so much more! I just don't like the attitude of brawl players in general.

oh btw i was becoming decent at brawl. I beat creepyfingers once in like fall 08! Melee is much better though!

I speak truth.

I heard about the blackhole glitches and was directed to smashboards. Then I saw the tournament and the Pac west forums. I learned that Ken was the best in the world and I wanted to be good too so I started playing. I was gonna quit but wanted to prove b!tches wrong and got good.

Now I'm hooked because this game is amazing.
you forgot the "is there any good players in westminster" thread

I don't know how many people care, but I'll tell my story.
I got into smash by playing SSB64 before melee came out and I looked on Gamefaqs to learn about advanced techniques like Z canceling and whatnot. I'm pleased to say I figured out Ness' DJC by myself. :p I think the first players I heard about were Platinum Kirby and Isai.
When melee came out, I got excited and went on IGN and gamefaqs a lot to learn as much as I could about the game because the competitive aspects of games intrigues me. I'm pretty sure one of the first players I've heard about in melee was Tavo on the IGN boards. Most of the stuff I followed was the HRC/BtT/event records though; I wasn't too interested in the tournament scene. The other players I knew about were Tetsuya, Cort, marth1, nismojoe (I used to go on his site all the time) mostly because of their stadium videos. The websites that got me interested in actual matches were AOB's, Captain Jack's, and ssbm.it, but I still didn't care too much about them.

I got bored of the game for a few years and lurked again when FC6 started. After watching tournament videos, I decided to try and get better at this game.

Too bad I didn't join when I first found out about stuff or my join date would be so old school. D:

I thought this would be a dumb thread but why the hell not, I'll post.

I had a long rivalry with a best friend and we'd compete at a lot of different stuff, each having our respective specialties. We played a lot of smash (64 then melee) but eventually I was able to consistently beat him. Since everyone else I'd played pretty much sucked I thought I was da bes' in da worl'.

Then I moved. At the new school they had a gaming club which I got involved in (2007). Melee comes up one day and I win a few rounds, then this guy and his friends come over. We play FFA, these guys would camp the edges and wait for 1 to be eliminated then team up to kill the other. They weren't that great but their team gayness always prevailed (Fox/Falco). They trash talked a lot.

Aggravated at their unfair advantage I look up Melee on the internet. I stumbled across a tournament video and it blew my mind (Ken vs PC). I decided to learn the techs they used because it looked really cool (Plus I'd have an edge over those guys heh). After practice I end up being able to beat their combo, eventually being able to absolutely destroy them.

I taught my friends the advanced techniques and we started to level up, wanting to go to tournaments. Got ***** at my first real tourney in Agoura Hills partly due to nerves but really due to lack of experience. Did better each tournament I attended. TGL's tourney was the last one I went to, and after that I occasionally practiced with some of the known 805 players on SWF and really improved a lot.

Pretty much all of my friends have stopped playing Melee now. Haven't been involved in smash lately, nothing seems to be happening down here anymore lol.

when I was young, I was abandoned by my parents. Alone and scared, my only refuge came in the form of a pack of 805 wolves, they raised me and taught me the ways of tight tech skills. Being wolves their mind games were vastly inferior to mine and I became the alpha male with ease. I then yearned to play with others like myself and scoured the landscape of the nard in search of worthy foes. I stumbled upon a lowly farmer boy named oscar, seemingly normal but hiding a terrible secret, whenever he said the key words 'WOOOO WAHA' he would become the powerful gaurdian of the 805, THE Ultra Luigi.

Few knew of his dangerous double life but I could see through his disguise, I then blackmailed him into teaching me the dark arts of melee. In no time I was ready for my first tournament, so I hopped into the Ultra Mobile and we drove to Luigi's Church, a well known gathering place for the vagrants who made up the young melee community. I faired well enough, went 2-2 and showed off my incredible ability to edge tech falcos dair, earning me the respect of many a lower ranked melee player. I quickly made friends among the community and soon started attending more tournaments than even my friend Ultra Luigi.

The rest is history

So what, I'm supposed to annoy the person by constantly checking? How will I know when things happen if I'm not informed? I want to play, don't understand where you're coming from.

just check smashboards for public smashfests/tournys
since you live in 805, just get a feel for brendan/steven school and work schedules and if you think they're free just text them if they want to smash

you could ask this every night i dont really think they would be annoyed

I've got a fairly simple story.

About 8 years ago, my friends were always talking about melee. I tried to join in, but didn't know anything about the game. About a year later I finally got my own GC and borrowed one of their copies and was interested, but it wasn't until about 5 years ago that I started to really try to play to get good. Then about 3 to 4 years ago Nasanieru became my friend and I started to get into more competitive play. Since then I've been hooked.

I'm not tourney caliber, but am trying to improve. I'm wiling to join Nasanieru when he plays with anyone.

we're obviously not on a forum that publicizes these things

with specific players' AIM in their profiles for even more intimate contact

Inside the hitbox of Falco's Up-Tilt.
ssb64 for fun as a kid. All I remembered when starting melee was that Mario's back-throw was broken.

Some kids (GREV) said I looked like PC Chris (used to have long hiar, and suppossedly I looked like PC Chris).

They called me PC Chris for about a month and always shouted PC for president at me. SO one day, I went with them to watch them play at lunch, i played one round as link in a free for all, and got intimidated so I just only watched from then on.
They said I had to use Falco (PC Chris) so I did.

First YouTube vid I watched: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tuREBIwqbu0

My first tournament was a playntrade brawl tournament, I think Connor won. Then my first real tournament was the last Aznfroce right by my house.

Everyone on SmashBoards liked me because because I looked like PC also, even Mango, he gave me a hug, because who doesn't like PC Chris??? Then I cut my hair and everyone hated me (still, for the most part, actually I don't know, all I know is Kira is cool), and Mango called the cutting of my hair not legit, but at least I got girls cause of it.

I saw HungryBox's puff and all those crazy backairs, so I tried her out once, and I kinda liked her, then I saw King and I liked her more, then I saw Mango and I KNEW I liked her. So I mained her. (Messed around with a lot of other characters after I always kept winning, and I also switched from Falco cause too many people used him between the six of us).

When Ghad and I first got into middle school, we always played melee for fun(items, and all that good stuff), and there was this game room where they had smash 64 and sometimes melee hooked up. We usually got wrecked becuz we had no clue how to really play the game, we just button mashed(I didnt even kno how to do the smash attack). Then one day after 8th grade graduation, ghad threw a graduation party and all these people from school came over, and we played melee on his laggy *** HD-TV. Then my bro(Grila) comes in hours later to tell us some weird **** called wavedashing. When I thought of wave dashing, i thought of some technique similar to a final smash since I thought the name was so cool. Once i found out wat it was, I thought it was gay and useless. But then 9th grade comes and about 3 months into the school year, we find out about this game club where they pretty much only played melee. We thought that they were really good so me and the original Grev (excluding gsub and stab) decided to make a krew becuz the nerdy dudes in there had a crew and we had recently found out about crew battles. And we had been determined to be the best in the school. So then went in there and got ***** but, we got better and everyone but me started winning. Except me, I still havent beaten any of those guys(so sad) I was the last one to figure out how to wavedash, and they hated me for my c-stick rolling habits. Then gsub comes along and he low key hated my guts(but its all good ;] ) He joins smashboards after him and my bro find out about it from the best smasher there at the time and eventually, after being deceived by brawl, returned to melee and went to some aznforce tourney where for the first time I got pwned really bad(By embrace and Larry) and i remember seeing lovage and someone else(maybe replicate?) playing grila and gsub in doubles, I think I remember hearing lovage making some type of a **** comment, becuz they suked so bad, and that was the first time I ever got a taste of the competitive smash scene.
