Thank you. I love hip-hop to death.

OH hey you're the dude from the other thread!

Because there's a huge difference between hip-hop and rap.
Rap consists of the mainstream club and radio hits. **** *****es get money and nice cars.
Hip-Hop is the movement. Listen to KRS-One talk about it.

"Hip and Hop is more than music
Hip is the knowledge
Hop is the movement
Hip and Hop is intelligent movement
or relevent movement
We're sellin' the music!
so write this down on your black books and journals
Hip-Hop culture is eternal!
Run and tell all your friends.
and ancient civilization will be born again!"
-Hip Hop Lives, KRS-One

AGREED. Hip-Hop isn't mainstream for the most part. I mean you have people like Nas and Eminem who are huge celebrities but still make quality music.

The categories have been there from the beginning. It started as Hip-Hop. Not Hip-Hop/Rap, not Rap. Hip-Hop.

Agreed, then we have Nas and underground artists, etc. etc.

WU needs more fame. <3 Wu-Tang
Yo u should checkout Wu-tang's new song "Dreams"

and also "Oh my" by Redman. They holdin it down 4 realz.

ay yo

tell the story about a brotha named steven
rapped about the lies the indrustry was feedin him
saw an oppurtunity to make more money than the best of the best
so sold out and made a club single that was just like the rest
made 50 g's off that hit, and everyone knew him not cuz of how he spit
but cuz he made a song that was top of the charts
whats popular is fresh he lied, and deep in his heart
he knew that what he did wasn't smart
he lost respect from the heads who treasured the art
of hip hop, pop was not an option they said
so they bagged on him and decided to listen to real stuff instead
and steven wasn't anything special, just another pop star
he rapped about how he was a thug, with bling and nice cars
a big house and all of the fine hoes he digged out
and he was rich now, but had no respect that he once
did, he lost himself in the money he earned,
steven had the money but no music with substance
just lies, lies and more lies came out, never heard
steven rap ever again, spent money on drugs
and booze, eventually put the berretta to his head
prayed for God's forgiveness, and busted a slug

I don't record.... yet, I'm saving money to get a Macbook Pro to record. If there's anything for a PC that's better than Garageband for recording, LET ME KNOW! I could use an alternative.

That Link I just posted is me. It's from last year, but it's still dope. And I made a post with some other songs I've recorded as well.

http://www.smashboards.com/showpost.php?p=10279442&postcount=195
That's cool, what do you use to record? Like what software?

EDIT: Big L is cool too, that song reminds me of Nas a bit...

I like Big L, but I can really feel the passion DMX puts into his music, you know?

I mean he took out all of his anger and puts it in. I mean his mom abused him, then abandoned him, and hella more stuff.

Pop crap? You do realize pop has reigned supream for the past thiry years. Hip-hop fades in and out with the passing years.

We had Madonna, Paula Abdul, Cyndi Lauper, Blondie in the eighties.

The ninties brought back orginal pop with woman like Kelly Clarkson, and we have bubblegum pop and Dance Pop made famous in the united states by britney Spears, Christina Aguilara and Justin Timberlake. Not to mention latin pop became popular with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

Now we have dance and techno mixed pop in the twenty tens! Lady Gaga, Jason Darulo, Justin Bieber. You may hate them, but crap it is not. Each person I mentioned clawed their way into the industy like eminem did. Just because they didnt lie about growing up in a terrible envoirment doesnt mean it was hard. (Yea apperently Eminem's mother is writing/wrote a book on how his childhood was very blown out of proportion)

So hip-hop is fine and Dandy, but Pop is very mucn NOT crap.

LOL. All I have to say is lol.

Pop is popular because a lot of people like it.

Doesn't mean that it's good.

Virtually none of pop has raw emotion and is able to move you to the soul. You can't feel chills down your spine listening to pop.

If you like it, that's fine, but IF you read what I had to say, I meant popular "hip-hop", yet popular rap isn't even hip-hop, it

Eminem's mom has a disease that makes her think that she is sick, she thought her son was sick too.

Drugged his food.

Plus he grew up in the poor area of DETROIT. MOSTLY BLACK PEOPLE. Constantly being trashed on because he's white.

Look, just listen to some of his songs. He pretty much explains it all.

Also, no, not every person you listed "clawed" their way into the industry.
Justin Bieber for example.

He just made videos on youtube, and eventually became popular.

Then he got signed by Usher.

Ooooooooohhh, I feel so bad for Justin Bieber. He had to work insanely hard to get into the industry.

Now take someone who makes good **** and works for it. Like DMX. I won't even go into detail about how terrible his childhood was. But he rapped for 13 years and got ignored by the industry because he was to GHETTO. Seriously, don't believe me? He had a bad rep for being aggressive. He rapped for 13 years! BEFORE HE GOT SIGNED.

Have a nice day, and get the **** out.

Okay, Justin Bieber may have not clawed his way to the top but Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson did. Just because someone has a terrible childhood doesnt make people who didnt have a bad childhoods climb to success easier.

Pop isnt raw negative emotion like rap can be. Pop;s raw emotion is usually described through moments of bliss, or moments of pure joy. Then they have they have moments of loss and depression. The word raw doesnt really fit with pop. Maybe pure emotion. Raw is to unrefined.

In general all I am trying to say is, Pop isnt crap. You just dont like it and probably dont give it the time of day. I like some rap/hip-hop. I like Missy Elliot, Nicki Minaj, and Eve.

Pop is popular for a reason, people like it. What makes something "good"? People liking it. I mean you like things that sound good to you right? Well pop has a lot of people that think it sounds good.

I could really explain how MJ, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga....especially Lady Gaga....got to the top. But you probably wouldn't believe me even if I explained how. Before you had to have talent before you were famous, but now its backwards, and talent no longer is relevant. Rap is the most obvious scapegoat of this principle. A lot of what is considered rap can be classified by pop if you listen to it.

What is considered good is certainly subjective. However, just because it's popular doesn't make it good. In fact, this was popular....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Qkas9mlMgE
Tell me it's good so I can laugh even more. Everything on radio is "popular" in that aspect, but it doesn't mean that it was quality. And that's what this thread is about.

And Nicki Minaj tight?

@ CookieMONster:
I did that song last year at my friends house. He used Adobe Edition, which is the same as the studio I go to now.

Firstly, RAP is not Hip-Hop. Rap is the popular version, Hip-Hop is underground and is a whole movement.
I could go into detail but I won't..

Secondly, Michael Jackson is the only alternative to the "pop is crap stereotype".

And TONS of hip-hop is uplifting!!! For example, listen to "It was a Good Day" by Ice Cube.

Is that negative? No.

Also, pop does not have raw emotion, except in VERY VERY rare cases.
For example, I'm Yours by Jason Mraz. It's the only pop song I like, and even though I listen to 99% hip-hop, this song is great. It has great lyrics, nice beat, and you can feel the emotion put into the song.

However, the rest is complete and utter ****. Pretty much. Justin Bieber doesn't write his lyrics! THERE IS NOTHING MEANINGFUL ABOUT HIS SONGS. SAME WITH TONS OF OTHER ARTISTS.

And utter joy and bliss? What? So California Gurls is utter bliss? And same with Miley Cyrus singing about a party in the USA?

News to me.

Pop isn't good at all.

People like it because it's catchy!

Also, Nicki Minaj, Missy Elliot, and Eve are terrible. I have a feeling that you like female rappers, so do yourself a favor and listen to Queen Latifah's hip-hop albums, and same with MC Lyte.

Plus, I can't stress this enough, in the title I was referring to popular rap, like Lil Wayne, etc. etc. Your whole argument was out of place, yet lucky for you I do detest pop to the fullest extent of my ability.

Have a nice day :)

And Nova. Is that good? I need something really really good to make my stuff.

Does it have royalty free loops?
Can you use virtual instruments to make beats and sounds?
If so, **** YES.

I like that song too.

Yeah, Jason Mraz's music is really good, you can tell the talent he has. But honestly most of pop is utter ****.

I don't think there's anything wrong with liking pop music, but the thing with pop is that it likes to take things from the underground and dilute it to suit the mainstream audience. The product is built on a formula. Mainstream audiences can't stomach the "raw" nature of underground hip hop (or underground anything), and so a popular commercial version is born. It's just a matter of business.

And as cookiemonster said, he was speaking out against popular rap rather than pop music itself.

Again, there's nothing wrong with liking pop or rap or anything. It's just that some people really can't stand it, and they'll call it "crap." And that's just a subjective opinion. Arguing music is like arguing politics; in the end no one's opinion changes. We all hear things differently.

Raw is to unrefined.

Agreed.

I mean it's fine if you like pop, I don't care, but if you say like, "Hip-Hop sucks, the rappers are terrible, it's not music, they're too vulgar" etc. etc, I have to speak up.

The main thing that got me annoyed was saying that Eminem lied about his abuse as a child.
That's true, not a lie.

But yeah, I prefer underground. It's more real, for sure.

And I'm one of the people that can't stand it, if anyone says Lil Wayne or Gucci Mane or whoever is the best rapper, I also have to speak in.

Jajaja?
I see we have a mexican in the building :D
Awesome, one of my best friend is mexican lol.

K, so that's three people. Most pop right now is just people who have these deals handed to them on a silver platter without them having to do ****. Hip-Hop is a lot less forgiving. You catch a bad break, and you're done.

Hip-Hop is real. You can classify it as raw negative emotion, but that's because it tells the truth.

I mean listen to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOuHan9loRs When I say listen I don't mean just write it off as negative before you hear it. I mean actually listen to it. Do you think Mos is trying to say "man the world sucks"? He's portraying what the world is actually like, not sugarcoating it.

In general all I am trying to say is, Pop isnt crap. You just dont like it and probably dont give it the time of day. I like some rap/hip-hop. I like Missy Elliot, Nicki Minaj, and Eve.
I could say the exact same thing about you regarding hip-hop. Listen to some underground stuff before formulating your opinion.

Pop is popular for a reason, people like it. What makes something "good"? People liking it. I mean you like things that sound good to you right? Well pop has a lot of people that think it sounds good.
No, you've got it twisted. People liking something makes it popular. Popular and good are not the same thing. Something that is good will still be good regardless of whether or not people like it. Popularity fluctuates depending on the opinions of the people that listen to the music. Yes, pop is popular. Does that automatically make it good? No.
