Great secondaries for Zelda?

I wonder what characters would be best to counterpick with as a Zelda user. My personal most troublesome match-ups as Zelda are:

Olimar
Lucas
Ike
G&W
Marth
ROB
Lucario

These are generally the only characters that my Zelda has faced and had genuine issues with. I'm not saying these are all BAD match-ups, but personally, they're annoying.

Now, I personally main Ness and I am learning PT, so I guess I could knock off Lucas and Olimar for sure, but the rest tend to give me issues. It's probably due to my personal playstyle, but anyway...

I need good counterpicks for the last five. I currently use no characters that are genuinely effective vs. the above. Zelda might go even with some of them, but I switch between offense and defense so often in fights that I always lose out somewhere with Zelda.

Sheik... would it just be best to use Sheik in conjunction with Zelda? I just don't see what I could do with Sheik against most of them. (Hint: I am terrible with Sheik, Fox, and other speedy characters.)

Alright, I'm rambling. Who do you believe are good CPs for Zelda? Who are your personal CPs?

Vs. Zelda? I normally throw up a ditto or a ness... my other charcters hate zelda.

as for great secondaries.... shiek is ideal because of the whole "they are connected" thing.... and shiek is good vs. olimar, lucas and ike....

I can't help you much though.... since all of my charcters besides Zelda are generally "bad"... but I play link v. peach before I play Zelda V. Peach normally.

most if not all of those characters zelda can beat you just need practice on them. but if it helps i hve been picking up rob as a 2nd since his dsmash destroys olimar and many other annoying matchups for zelda

Toon Link works well. I find that zelda players love to spam upsmash and projectiles, both things that toon link does well.

Uhhh no. Zelda players use more of their arsenal of moves than most other characters do. You've got fsmash,dsmash,naryus,dtilt,utilt,fair,bair,uair........I hate how everyone says all Zelda players do is spam dins. you really don't want to get me started.

i main link so this might sound weird but, i do believe that if you main zelda luigi would be a beast secondary because he has like no down sides to him lol

or it's just that my luigi is beast and i have no downsides :p

ZSS is a good secondary for Zelda/vice-versa.

First off, she compliments what Zelda lacks: speed and maneuverability (which also brings about the ability to string combos), though at the price of the raw power Zelda has.

Secondly, while her moves are different, many act in the same manner. They both have powerful Up-attacks and dash attacks that keep the character moving while pushing away the enemy. Both have sweeping kicks (Zelda's down-smash and ZSS's down-A) and kicks that make the enemy trip (ZSS's tilted side-A and Zelda's down-A). And don't forget about those awesome B-airs.

Thirdly, a Zelda player is (hopefully) proficient in Sheik as well and ZSS is probably the closest character to Sheik's playstyle (while they're not all that similar).

What I guess I'm trying to say is that Zelda and ZSS are different enough to be more effective against certain characters while retaining enough similarities to not drastically change your intuitive button-pressing. Sweetspots and such will always be different between two characters but it's a good compliment.

Luigi is a beast. My roomie does an awesome weeg and I have to struggle if I want a win against him... but I don't feel like their play styles are similar. Weeg is a very air based combo fighter where Zelda is much stronger on the ground. I really don't counterpick I just keep working at playing Zelda better and making less mistakes and she can overcome anybody.

lol I was gonna say Metaknight too.

How about Dedede, the only real problem character then would be GaW and GaW is a crazy mofo regardless of who you pick.

Snake, Meta Knight and Falco (I'm trying to learn all 3 of these) are very strong secondaries. Mainly Snake.

I might test my Snake out in pools this coming tournament if I feel the time is right.

If you're not good with Sheik then probably shouldn't switch. Don't wanna counter pick with a character that you're not confident with in tournaments.

And as for Zelda I will always do the ditto, but of course most of the top tiers are good against her as well.

Counter picking is very situational. Depends on the stage involved, how well each player knows the match up. If you think about counter picking Snake, but you know that your opponent knows Snake inside and out, then it may be best to stay your best character. On the other hand if the opponent never plays against Snakes (as unlikely as that may be) then Snake might get the job done for you. Finally your current state of mind has a lot to do with deciding on which character to use. Are you focused, distracted, confident, or nervous.

I'm trying to pick up falco myself.... I already play ness, link and jiggly decent enough as secondaries and mainly I counterpick using down+B (shiek)

but, I'd like to have a top teir charcter just to cover some really difficult matchups.

lol, snake isn't hard to use AT ALL.

If you want to know who you should pick up as a counter pick, go to all the character specific boards and find out who they think is a hard match up.

I personally use Peach, Zelda, and Lucario in any tourney setting. I tend to switch depending on how I feel at the moment. I'm working on sheik right now and she's pretty solid. If I had to be really lame to win I'd use snake, maybe I just have natural ability with him. Fsmash walls with lucario are funny.

You're gonna try use Snake next week Sunday? I'm assuming that's not against me (since you said that you'll always go Zelda for the ditto).

Back on topic, picking a secondary is a tough business. I guess MK or Snake are the ways to go if you're trying to pick up a secondary to cover your weaknesses. Sheik helps in the Ike match up, but I doubt Sheik will help much in those other match ups (even if you were good with Sheik).

But honestly, it's more important that you're comfortable with your character and your comfortable fighting against your opponent's character (like you've got some experience). So I'd just pick secondaries that work for you and just try your best to win.

Lastly, on a bizarre side note, I fit into that category of people who never get practice against Snake.

Yeah if I do play you it'll gonna be Zelda ditto. Or if you go Sheik like last time.

Only Snake if the timing is right for it. Again taking my opponents strength against Zelda, and my state of mind into consideration.

Its all about playing who fits your playstyle. My secondaries are Ness & Peach because their playstyles fit me like a glove. I have fun with them, and I know I can do well with them. Its more about finding the potential the character has in your hands, and how creative you can be with them.

yeah... when picking a secondary... it's not ALL about matchups... it also has to be someone you are comfortable using. Just because two characters supposedly have the same matchup against an other doesn't mean you'll get the same results. For some odd reason, I like to take jigglypuff out vs. marths, Link vs. peaches, ness vs. donkey kong, lucas or Zelda and sonic against olimars.... it's probably not the BEST option.... but I really enjoy those matchups for some odd reason... oh... and, of course, shiek covers some of zelda's bad matchups so, if you can play a good shiek... it's really nice to be able to in game counterpick... even if you aren't going to dual main them

Snake? I thought you were "lighting the way for the bottom tiers"?

That sig applys to Melee. Zelda isn't bottom tier in Brawl. I just keep it cause I worked real hard on the picture.

And I'm probably only going to go Snake in pools for fun. If I have like enough wins to pass through already. No need to murder everyone. Unless they ask me to use Zelda then I probably will. Definitely no Snake in brackets though.

learn sheik first since you'll always be able to balance off most of zelda's weaknesses. zss is a good choice for you too and (although i don't want to admit it) any of the top tier characters plus marth will probably be perfect as a secondary. And since i like to play as him as well I'm also gonna recommend luigi.

Good posts everyone.

... I'm off to my first tourney now. Will report results later.

(Gonna just do Zelda as main and Ness as secondary.)
