Monitor internet use, warns Keneally
NSW Premier Kristina Keneally has offered her condolences to the family of a young Sydney woman allegedly murdered after befriending two men on Facebook.

Ms Keneally also said Nona Belomesoff's death was a timely reminder for parents to monitor their children's internet habits.

Ms Belomesoff, 18, disappeared last Wednesday after leaving her Cecil Hills home to meet two men she had befriended on Facebook.

She had arranged to meet the pair about 10am (AEST) at Leumeah railway station and planned to return home on Thursday morning after a night camping.

Her body was found on Friday night in bushland near Warminda Oval at Campbelltown.

"My thoughts are with the young woman's family at what must be a devastating time for them," Ms Keneally told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.

"No matter what our age ... we should be careful of the people who we meet online and not assume that they are who they represent themselves to be.

"Certainly for parents, it is a tragic yet timely reminder to be aware of what your children are doing online and who they are talking to."

Ms Keneally said government could not regulate to stop people lying about their identities, electronically or in person.

A 20-year-old Leumeah man has been charged with Ms Belomesoff's murder, and was refused bail at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.

He is due to appear before Campbelltown Local Court on May 20.

Talk about terribad. Poor girl. Although, at the age of 18 you'd think she'd know better. :urg: This is why people need to be careful on who they add on Facebook and who they talk to. It could lead to things like this.

Wow.....

That...well, sucks. At least she went to a public place for their meeting.

She should have brought a real friend with her, too, though, and maybe this tragedy could have been avoided.

She's at an age where she should be responsible enough but I mean...its pretty sketchy. Meeting 2 guys over the internet. Meeting up with 1 guy you met over the internet may be a little sketchy, but meeting with 2 guys...you're pretty much asking for it :/ Even bringing a friend along wouldn't have helped this case much.

That's terrible :/ Sad she didn't know any better, what with all of the stories of things like this happening in the past...

The way the thread was titled, I thought she was killed just for adding them.

My thoughts are with the family.

How do people do stuff like this?

This stuff is just awful. Why do people feel like they need to do this? Why do people WANT to do this? I don't get it at all... It's just really stupid. I hope the family will feel better soon... This is just so awful ;_;

this is the main reason why i don't support myspace/facebook... such a pity
Many people use Facebook to stay in touch with people they know. Choosing to go camping overnight with two guys you don't know is stupid, and has nothing to do with Facebook, per se.

This does not excuse the murderer's actions, by any means, but this story simply highlights the need to be smart and use some sense. It's not a mark against social networking sites.

This is really sad to hear. This is why I am not a fan of meeting people on the Internet and real life after that and why I rarely use Facebook (I only use it because there's a group dedicated to removing live action TV shows from Cartoon Network).
That's why you meet people at Smash Bros. tournaments.
You still don't know most of the people outside of the Internet first. How is that any different then meeting a person outside of the Internet.

Because you can't even see the person if it's over the Internet. They can lie to you. It's a lot easier to lie over the internet than it is in real life, maybe you've noticed?

edit: or maybe not as you sound like you're scared of people in general.

Very.

Which are you more likely to be robbed (or worse) at? An out-of-the-way location at night with only two people who happen to know each other and invite you to come over without anyone else, or a place with 20-30+ people in one room?

I hate to sound insensitive, but I feel like she brought it upon herself. How can you not foresee something bad coming out of this? Meeting (alone) with two people you've never met before? Being 18 years old, you should realize that there's something seriously wrong with this situation. It shouldn't be the parents' responsibility to monitor the internet usage of someone legally old enough to drive, vote, and purchase alcohol.

My thoughts go out to the family, and it still confounds me that people like the men in this story actually would do something like this.

I AGREE AS WELL

I remember seeing a scene in this movie where a lady was alone in a city and a guy comes up to her stating that he and his friends are gonna go out dancing but he doesn't have a dancing partner. The guy convinces her to join him in this so called "dance" only to realize that they have been driving for far too long (not to mention there was like 2 guys in the car and a woman) and parked in a vacant place. These guys didn't want to dance, they wanted to gang **** her and they did.

Moral of my excerpt? This sort of stuff happens in real life too.

Though, it's easier to bait people on the internet since they can't really see you.

In the victim's defense, people who are too trusting can sometimes be that way due to feelings of loneliness or depression or other emotional problems that make them vulnerable to con artists and abusers. Take, for instance, senior citizens, who are at a higher risk of getting scammed than a lot of other demographics. A lot of them have a lifetime's worth of experience, but sometimes they might be more out of touch with current technology, or some people might get lonely after their partners pass on and their kids live too far away, etc. And that can leave a person open to being taken advantage of.

To go so far as to trust two complete strangers she met only on facebook, I have to wonder if this girl was just desperate for friends. Maybe she didn't have that many people irl.

Yahoo screwed up. I don't know what the deal was with camping, but all other news places are reporting that she believed she was going to a meeting about work at an animal welfare organisation.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/05/17/2901537.htm

It is alleged that Nona Belomesoff, 18, believed she was going to work with an animal welfare organisation when she left her home last Wednesday to meet two men she befriended on Facebook.

The man charged with murder allegedly set up a false Facebook profile masquerading as someone who worked with animals. Police say the second man Ms Belomesoff believed she was meeting did not exist.
The general assumption is that she added the guy from somewhere, and then he made a fake account (or two by the sounds of it) and after finding her likes and such, lured her with a job offer.

This is why I think Facebook and Myspace are a waste of time
They're a waste of time because they're pointless and stupidly executed, not because they can be dangerous when misused.

This is really tragic...that the guy tried to dupe her into thinking it was a job opportunity is terrible. She shouldn't have believed some guy on Facebook, but...ugh, that's just terrible.

Fix'd.

Facebook and social networking sites are awesome tools for keeping in touch with your friends after you all move to different colleges. They're really not a waste of time at all when you take like a few minutes to update your status, reply to a few comments, like a few things, and then log out.

I know a lot of you guys are still in high school and can easily meet your current friends, but that changes completely once you graduate high school and move on to college.

Farmville and Mafia Wars can just suck it for all I care. :p

Thing is, before Smash Bros. tourneys, they're usually started up on the Internet, therefore, you have to meet people on the Internet before going to a Smash Bros. tourney. Which means you're meeting people in real life that you first saw on the Internet.

Smash tournaments involve multiple people, normally upwards of 20. Meeting with one person you met over the internet and going to a place with dozens of people you met over the internet are completely different situations.

this.

facebook is pretty convenient once you've moved onto college, or at least out of high school.

This as well. Usually when parents are iffy, they come by and check out the venue themselves.

Wait...so she actually wanted to go camping with these guys? >____>

Yeap! I never used the apps. But I've gotten in touch with some friends to meet up, etc. It's a good way to organize events, too. Only issue is stranges. No need to befriend someone you have no idea about. And if you do think twice about even meeting them in person!
So it wasn't about camping but a job?

I really am on both sides of this discussion to be completely honest... It really depends on how long she's been talking to them/known them, and other factors, too. I've met people I talked to on Facebook plenty of times. But I'm pretty independent, and can defend myself, too. As well as careless? So... I mean...
