Also, I wanted to take a quick moment to thank you all for being cool about all this. There have been issues with fans being a little, uh, aggressive towards people like PolarPanda and I'm glad you all are being level headed and respectful (at least so far). Looks good on the fanbase because, Christ on Toast, people are being real a-hole-a-roonies else where. Also, because, you all have been so cool, I'm going to post a TOTALLY REAL AND NOT AT ALL FAKE hint about the two finalists. Take a look:

My reaction to the "hint" and trying to determine if there is some reverse psychology going on:

So can someone recap to me what happened throughout today?
Here are the big takeaways:

-Three on the "list" are real, everyone else is heavily implied to be water cooler gossip.

-One was eliminated early and fairly publically. The creators tried to get Square to change their mind. Square squashed this pretty quick and with some speculating that this made Square a Grumpy Gus and made negotiations more difficult all around.

-There were two "finalists" with it only being known that one had serious negotiations. The end result is unknown, even by people deep inside when it comes to information.

-Based on this, if anyone speaks definitively about any of the 7 aside from the one that was turned down:

-If you've been paying attention, the rejected character has been talked about a lot to the point that just about everyone is comfortable saying "it's not them." People don't even butt heads about it aside from the one guy who's increasingly becoming a loose cannon and people are slowly starting to resent because of sheer carelessness.

-Bottom line based on this information: one's real, one's leak bait, and another is just flat out of the running. Of the remaining two, nobody is totally sure who is real and people have been super careful not to make any strong statement regarding this.

There 3 characters from the list that are important, the rest are gossip

1- The real
2- The leakbait
3- The one who got denied right at the start and the creator tried to convince SE otherwise

atleast its what I know

I feel like they revealed a lot of big guns like K. Rool and Ridley at the start because of leaks. The ENTIRE GAME was leaked two WEEKS before launch, and even without that, Vergeben knew large pieces of the roster before the game even got an official name. (and, for other games, both Brawl and Smash 4 had their entire base roster leaked before launch)

By the time that Vergeben was seen as an extremely credible source (thanks to the Simon reveal, which he had been saying was definitely happening even before E3), the only characters left to reveal were Isabelle (which he had put on the same level as Simon), Ken, and Incineroar.

If they had saved Ridley or K. Rool for the end, then they would have been revealed before Nintendo could show them off, whether it was through Vergeben, the box leak, or the game itself getting put on shelves before the street date.
I agree with your post; here's my schtick: a game should be able to carry itself regardless of leaks. Even if Ridley and Rool were leaked, there still would've been skeptics since it always seemed undoable, but people still would've been happy.

My case in point is if Grinch was real, people still would've been flying high, regardless of it being leaked. Leaks don't ruin games; poor design choices, decision-making, etc. does. I'm sick of the "hype" YouTube reaction culture. Remember when games were able to sell before Nintendo Directs and YouTube reactions? Remember finding out about Melee's roster via the guidebook at Walmart, or the Brawl newcomers via the Dojo, with zero fanfare? That was my era. :shades:

Anyway, I understand I'm in the minority over Piranha Plant, and that most consider it their savior or something; whatever. I get people like it, but I feel like some are feigning over-enthusiasm to rub it in.

Well that's a relief. I'd hate to see a literal pile of goo secure a playable slot in smash bros before so many fan favorites.
And I'd hate to see a generic enemy secure a playable slot before my puppet savior, but I believe as Jagger said, you can't always get what you want.

Is this your way of telling us that it's between Sephiroth and Geno?

I still think Erdrick is the likeliest. Dragon Quest has collaborated with Mario on multiple occasions. I really think it's going to happen.

I unfortunately don't think Square Enix or Nintendo really care about Geno :(
But one of those DQ collaborations was only in Japan, the other two were Mario Sports Mix and Fortune Street. That's not a lot.
My thoughts if this is all true: After everything @Fatmanonice said, I feel really confident about Geno coming. Let's use the process of elimination method: We know that there were only 3 Square Enix characters who were on the table, and they were from the compiled list of names Vergeben was told, meaning we can rule out all the SE characters who weren't on the list, most notably Neku, Lightning, Noctis, Chocobo, and any DQ character that isn't Erdrick, Slime, or Luminary. The other 4 characters on the list were water cooler gossip (lol). One of the 3 SE characters was rejected by Square Enix, and was described by @Fatmanonice as "if you have been following the thread, you will have a good idea who the cut character is."
We've given multiple cons towards a DQ character and a Final Fantasy character, it's definitely got to be one of them.
1. I just don't see a Final Fantasy character because they HAVE to get music for them, and the Final Fantasy composer has been on a hiatus since September due to an illness. We'd be lucky if we're getting Sephiroth because we have another Final Fantasy stage, but I don't think third-parties can two unique newcomers, only echo fighters or multiple assist trophies. I'd actually like Sephiroth in here, but only as a bonus with the Square rep; I hope he's part of the pack because Cloud and Sephiroth are perfect for the Midgar stage.

2. As for a Dragon Quest character, Erdrick is owned by four companies, the composer is a **** that's very anti-LGBT and denies the war crimes of Japan from WW2. We know it's his opinion, but this guy working with Nintendo is going to make Nintendo themselves look bad. There were already people mad about Mr. Game and Watch's "racist" move, but if they are working with him, I guess Nintendo is up for people getting angry at them again. Someone mentioned that the DQ composer is racist, we have to see some evidence first; if he is racist towards the west, then I don't see Nintendo working with this ******* at all. The DQ composer also doesn't like the west having his soundtracks, so he's going to be hard to negotiate with. If we get Slime or Erdrick, we'll have to deal with the d*****bag composer, Armor Project, Heartbeat, and the other company that owns Erdrick. (Forgot the 4th company's name)

3. Sakurai or Nintendo's already got the rights to use Geno in the game as a spirit. The fact that the SMRPG composer herself is already onboard is fantastic and means Nintendo won't have to deal with going to a random composer directly. Geno is completely owned by Square Enix, he's 100% owned by them, he's not owned by multiple companies like Slime and Erdrick are, so Nintendo shouldn't have a problem getting him as a full-fledged newcomer. Geno is also the cheapest, because if they had a hard time getting Cloud, then could you imagine the rough time getting someone like Sephiroth, Slime, or Erdrick? The fact that Geno got his own Mii costume means a lot; if Geno never got a Mii costume, then I can't see it. Back to the Mii costume, that meant a lot! The fact that he's the second most acknowledged Square character means he's got to be up for consideration from Nintendo. Cloud, Geno, and Mallow are the only Square spirits in the game, so there's a lot of evidence going on for Geno as being the next Square rep.

As Fatmanonice pretty much said, as long as you've been here connecting the dots with us, we have our answer.

Leave it to Nintendo to add the first second third-party character from an already represented franchise over a heavy-requested character from their biggest franchise... nothing to see here folks: Mario RPG is dead. People can't handle how great it is.

I already released a high amount of anger when Kencineroar and Pirahna Plant happened, i REALLY do not want SE and Ninty to make me release more.
I mean, I understand Incineroar isn't that hype, but Ken was awesome, and Piranha Plant was surprisingly funny with a cool moveset. You bet this was a character made by an apprentice from Sakurai which he looked at it and actually thought it was very well done. This is kinda a thing among developers who are looking for someone to pass the baton. Sakurai stated in recent interviews that he hasn't found anyone yet to take care of some parts of development to help him out. The man does everything by himself almost.
Ironically, he is the only interactable object in Smash 64, so you could say he was there from the start.
But releasing that ammount of anger is kinda sad m8. Must be boring living under these conditions. :/
Ultimate has so many reasons to be happy and hyped.

Yes, I would imagine the plant was some joke pet project started by someone and just morphed into a playable character.

If that someone was Sakurai and he entirely planned on it from the beginning. Sakurai likes to stretch his creativity, and PP was likely a byproduct of that.

I love Geno but...C'mon.
You can't compare Geno to Sephiroth now in term of iconess or big bang it would made if he made it in.

tbh, I don't really think he's that much bigger; Cloud I understand, but now we're just talking about two characters that only gamers would know.

Not like it's a surprise, but my source was absolutely correct about there being free spirit updates. Yet another thing he heard right.

https://twitter.com/Pokemon_cojp/status/1069033679450718214?s=19
And one of them is literally just Pikachu. Not any specific Pikachu or anything, just Pikachu.
I don't wanna hear anyone say Spirits deconfirm until they remove this and the Pit (Classic) Spirit from the game. In both cases, it is quite literally the same character that is already playable, not even a different form of them, just different art.

See, this is why I think the lack of S-E spirits can be ammended by this.
Very cool to know this

You underestimate the popularity of him. The guy is almost the Darth Vader of FF..
Everyone who sees anything from FFVII usually sees Cloud fighting a guy with long white hair with an evil look.
He is way bigger in that regard.

What did I miss?
So PolarP and gang got more info on the Square list. Apparently there were only 3 characters officially named. All the others are 'water cooler gossip'
They verified this new person and they are legit. The biggest thing is out of the 3 one of them was denied by Square immediately. Apparently said creator of character, rallied to have Square change their mind, but they did not budge.

So 1 is real, 1 is leakbait and 1 was straight up denied.

Take that as you will. If I missed something let me know gang.

Yes. Literally even if spirits are 'deconfirmation', it seems to only be in regards to that exact look/appearance. If it really was that important, they could just rename retro spirits to be named something like "Geno (classic)", or not even change the name at all, just slightly redesign him. He's never even had a 3D appearance in any game to begin with, so... yeah.

I should clarify that this is speculation. But I think this points strongly to spirits not meaning much of anything.

Every time I see your signature I want to play persona 5. I don't have time to do a fourth play through of a 100 hour game right now. I have finals. Why are you doing this to me?
Sorry! Oh you did three playthroughs, huh? I did two.

Well, I do hope they announce the first DLC character at VGA so maybe we can get this over with.

If I can't have Geno, I'd absolutely love Sephiroth. But honestly, him being in at this point in time would be weird. Like, imagine telling yourself in brawl when sonic was announced that Final Fantasy of all series would get a second character before sonic. And for the first additional unique character from a third party franchise to be him would just be strange. I would be really hyped if sephiroth made it, but it just seems kind of random.

Say, the spirit for Pikachu says what in Japanese? Does it specify Pikachu or it states just the name? Bc this is pretty huge news.

EDIT: Never mind. It says "Let's Go". The Spirits theory is still a thing. Specially considering that it isn't labelled as a fighter spirit.
If a spirit's name changes in an update, then I will believe the spirit theory to be false.

So nintendo is now locking content from smash and the only way to unlock this content is by having to play a game i preferably don't want to?
Reading the tweet that says that it will be added later in a free update in the spirit board?
Idk man, doesn't seems to lock content.

If we're talking about the Square character who would make the biggest splash with a 2019 release, it's definitely Sora; I don't think that has much stock in anything anyway.

It mentions that if you link your Let's Go save file to your switch (which is automatic), you get the spirit automatically starting on dec 14th. Not sure if it shows up on spirit board otherwise, but probably.

Say, the spirit for Pikachu says what in Japanese? Does it specify Pikachu or it states just the name? Bc this is pretty huge news.

It says Pikachu (Let's Go) and Eevee (Let's Go). Sorta like that Pit spirit named Pit (Classic). Even if spirits are deconfirmation, that just means they can redesign a character and it'll be completely different from a spirit.

Ha, I think I get it. Nintendo had to keep giving money to Square to get this character.
They keep trying after so long, from going as back as Brawl to Smash 4 and to Ultimate.
It's only one guy, a one-man band... Geno is a one-man character that's only owned by Square, wait, Sephiroth is, too! (I think he is)
HOLY LORD, IT'S ONE THAT'S GETTING ALL THE MONEY; SQAURE IS ONLY GETTING MONEY FROM THIS ONE!
Maybe it's Nintendo that's getting money from people buying this DLC character... it has to be popular, just like Sephiroth and Geno.
It's only one guy... they're happy. IT'S SAKURAI THAT'S HAPPY! YES, IT HAS TO BE HIM!
What the hell's goin' on? I MEAN WHAT THE HELL IS GOIN' ON?!
