You're getting excited way too quick my friend. These kind of assumptions were what I made as a Shadow fan during base game and Isaac fans made as well.
Geno certainly isn't the rejected character, yes, but everything else is unknown.

I want to point out we're taking this outsider, as fatmanonice described them, coming in and saying "there's only 3" as gospel WAY too hard. Let's cool it folks; we just don't know yet.
This is all pure speculation, and I think Geno has a really good shot regardless if this is true or not, but if this is true, I'm still feeling pretty good about Geno's chances

I'm still shocked at Shadow being an assist trophy again. I wasn't even a fan and I though he was a lock. It was just so odd that they held back the assist for so long. If there's one thing the base game speculation tuaght me it's that sometimes things we think "wouldn't make sense for them to do" really are just weird business/marketing moves and shouldn't be taken too seriously as evidence.

Not to derail the current topics, but I wanted to see everyones preferences on this.

If you could have any 5 video game characters in Smash which would they be? You can also choose a stage and one song.

For my personal list it would be

1) Noctis(FF15), Insomnia as stage, Apocalypsis Aquarius as the song.

2) Ryu Hayabusa(Ninja Gaiden), Castle of the Dragon as stage, Unbreakable Determination as song.

3) Spyro the Dragon(Spyro), Stone Hill stage, Spyro 1 Theme.

4) Will(Advance Wars Days of Ruin) Rubinelle and Lazuria Battleground, Wills theme song.

5) Master Chief (Halo) Ark (Installation 00) as stage, Halo Main theme.
I’m gonna go into some detail with my response and if it can be ANY video game character I’m gonna assume that means anything like Mii costumes and AT’s don’t deconfirm but For my Personal List it would be:

1) Banjo-Kazooie their play style would be a duo character but more like a traditional duo character so not like how Duck Hunt does it, Banjo would have his own moves but down-B would switch to Kazooie who has her own moves consisting of shooting eggs, Flying and being more of a rush down character while Banjo does the KO’ing. As for Stage it would be The Iconic Spiral Mountain which has appeared in all or most of the B-K Games. For music if I had to choose only one it would be Spiral Mountain as well cause that’s my personal favorite song from the OST.

2) Geno his playstyle would focus on Timing his specials correctly, akin to how SMRPG’s battle system does it. His Stage would be a travelling Stage that explores all of the Iconic areas like Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser’s Castle, Forest Maze Etc. His song would be a remix of Beware the forest mushrooms for Obvious reasons for one it’s the fan favorite song of the OST and one of my favorite songs from the game.

3) Rex & Pyra/Mythra they would be similar to Pokémon Trainer kinda with Pyra and Mythra switching out causing Rex’s playstyle to change depending on who you use. For Example Mythra could be slower but Stronger and Pyra could be faster but Weaker. As for stage and music I would choose Elysium as the stage and Gormott as the song as it’s so calm and happy it’s such a nice son it makes but me feel calm and relaxed.

4) Isaac, Isaac could Use his Dijiin’s and Sword which would be similar to Robin yet very different Robin plays how he plays but Isaac could change Dijiin’s on a fly kind of a mix between Robin and Shulk. His stage could Be Vale or the ending area from the Original GS (can’t think of the name at the moment) with the song being Venus lighthouse cause it’s such a banger.

Last but not least is

5) Skull Kid who could be a floaty Mage with long ranged magic and could also use Tatl and tael along with the Ocarina referencing the beginning cinematic of Majora’s Mask. His Stage would either Be Lost woods or Clock Town and his song would be a remix of Majora’s theme.

Whatever happens next, I just hope the Video Game Awards on december 6th will show us something smash related and if not, lets just keep the ride going till 2019. I may have been utterly devastated at Isaac not making it in, but I will still hold out hope for Geno to make it in. The passion his fans have is incredible and he always was my most wanted character since brawl. You guys are the reason this has been the best thread I have ever been a part of on smashboards besides the Isaac one. Lets keep believing and be prepared for both outcomes. I only can pray square and nintendo both said yes to Geno after Shadow and Isaac got the no.

Not sure how many of you have seen this but
https://twitter.com/BoundaryBreak/status/1068682697365745664
There seems to be an implication that something smash related WILL be happening at the VGA's this year
I still don't see why this has to be something Smash related. People keep throwing this around, but the big thing is, that yes, December 7th is marked by Ultimate's release date. Of course one of the biggest games of the years is going to overshadow The Game Awards completely in the moment and that's the big thing that has to be referenced.

The main implication would just be something Nintendo related, not Smash related, from this video. There's nothing beyond the joke to indicate an announcement for Smash specifically from what I can see.

As for the whole three potential picks, that's interesting if true. Sqaure turning down a big character sounds about par for the course for them, and wouldn't surprise me in the least bit. And I imagine there'd be a whole lot less of a desire to post if Geno wasn't one of the two considered characters, so that's potentially good news. I still really hate how things are going with the whole insider says "X" situation and have this whole Smash cycle, but people in this thread like Polar and Fatmanonice are at least people I've seen on the boards and consistent enough for me to more willingly accept such possibilities of info.

I just wish we could introduce more concrete elements of proof back in to speculation, but I certainly understand why that can be impossible given various elements of the situation. Especially if Square Enix has such a powerful spy network for catching these things (Seriously, world governments have less security on pertinent information than Square apparently has on a goddamned Smash character).

Just caught up with this thread. Jeez, this info drop is making me a bit nervous about Geno. But at the same time excited because the creators for Super Mario RPG don't work at Square any more. Please Sakurai, let there be a miracle from the stars.

What about the third character? We have two described here.
  • One was turned down
  • The second one went to negotiations
  • And the third one...?
Were they briefly discussed then dropped?
Somehow missed this one. No, the assumption is that the third was on standby in case negotiations for the second one fell through but, that's the kicker, no one knows the end result. Boofer and Doofer were the finalists. Doofer got invited into the boss's office. Boofer sat in the lobby and derped on their phone. If Doofer didn't get the job, it's assumed that Boofer did with much smaller possibilities that they both got it or the boss decided that they both sucked and decided to start over.

If this is all true, I think this would be very good for Geno. If true: the 3 Square Enix characters are from the list compiled of what Vergeben was told, Geno is likely not the rejected character, he is not the leak bait character, and he is likely not a water cooler gossip character. Vergeben being told not to take Geno too seriously and Geno only being mentioned once makes him not a leak bait character and likely not a water cooler gossip character. He is likely not the rejected character, so this puts him in a really good position if true

Fatmanonice Fatmanonice Why is it that those in the know believe this outsider? Do they have any particular credibility, or is it just because what they said would explain some things?
I can answer that since it was actually sent to my source. Basically, somebody out of the blue messaged my source claiming to have Enix info. He linked a LinkedIn profile of a SE translator (obviously not going to give names), and provided that info.
Can't necessarily confirm it, but I'm sure it's noteworthy.

I think people need to keep their expectations in check. Remember the November 1st direct.
I can temper my expectations and still end up disappointed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Tbh in the end I'll probably play as whoever the character is and like them even if I don't care about them, but if it's not Geno I'm disappointed nonetheless.

Nobody really expects anything at this point. It's not as if we're running about claiming our guy is a lock. If we seem the slightest bit optimistic, it's because that's the thread for it. We won't be singing the blues until we get a hard deconfirmation.

(This is just speculation, please do not misinterpret this post) Given everything I've been hearing from my contacts and my source, I'm leaning to the Enix rep being Geno, Sephiroth, or DQ. I still personally believe Geno is the most likely given what my source has heard, and hopefully he can get complete confirmation (unless the reveal is at VGAs), but if it's not then it'll likely be one of those 2. The majority of contacts I've spoken to have also heard DQ more, or lean to it for other reasons. Sephiroth was supported by a couple other contacts of mine.

1. They knew he was a highly-requested character
2. They know he's an easy Echo to make
3. They showed off Knuckles as an AT right at the beginning
4. They save Shadow's AT for the very last minute
5. Sakurai is an asshole

The next time someone interviews Sakurai they have to ask him if this kind of stuff is intentional, cause I feel like it is.

It's not, trust me. Remember what my source found out: Nintendo isn't fully aware of the demand. They honestly didn't think the Isaac fanbase was that large, and they ESPECIALLY did not expect hate mail. They're not as informed as we think they are. K Rool and Ridley, so far, are the only characters that reached them (unless Geno did too).

If everyone says "Let's just wait and see" then we have nothing to talk about. It's not your responsibility to tell people what to expect. I'm sorry if this comes out the wrong way. It just gets old seeing people say the exact same thing you just said multiple times every day.

I mean we can but I personally tempered my expectations right before the November Direct and still came out immensely Dissapointed.

Why do some many people want Geno anyway?
Cool character with obscene moveset potential from a criminally forgotten game. Sakurai has vouched for him before... I don't know if that even means anything anymore since he still isn't in the game.

Best case scenario: Sakurai wanted to put him in Brawl but couldn't because of rights, wanted to put him in Smash 4 but rights, wanted to put him as Smash 4 DLC but Cloud would sell better and will be DLC this time around because Square wants that sweet DLC cash.

We actually know an answer for that. Nintendo thought fans liked ATs and have been getting a rude awakening with this game. Phones and email boxes have been blown up because of Isaac and Waluigi alone and Nintendo's kind of beside itself for misreading the fans that much.

Id assume Isaac did pretty well on the ballot as well. Seems odd that only K. Rool and Ridley would be the only ones to reach them.
