If I can't have Geno, I'd absolutely love Sephiroth. But honestly, him being in at this point in time would be weird. Like, imagine telling yourself in brawl when sonic was announced that Final Fantasy of all series would get a second character before sonic. And for the first additional unique character from a third party franchise to be him would just be strange. I would be really hyped if sephiroth made it, but it just seems kind of random.
I'm very afraid that Fatmanonice Fatmanonice 's post was so sarcastic that the hint itself is false, hence the characters suggested are not the ones that were left.

Last post for the night because I need to keep working on reports.

Please remember no one is 100% confirmed, and we need to hype responsibly. We don't want another Grinch leak fiasco, so lets make sure to analyze every character and not rule anyone 100% out. See why each character could work, even if you don't like them and then come to a conclusion from there. Keep in mind yes Nintendo is making the decisions, but Square has an equal voice in the matter. Square is incredibly stingy and they always follow these rules when it comes to their characters being in other games. They represent Square Enix, they are still relevant, they help cross promote. We have not seen Square break these rules before. Its not impossible they could break these rules. However its unlikely due to the fact on how Square is, they don't lend out more than they have to. And they only lend out if its both short and long term profitable for them.

All of this being said hopefully The Game Awards will reveal the first DLC, which its looking like it just might. Best of luck to all the characters and fanbases in the running, and if your character does not get in please remember how much content we already have in Smash Bros Ultimate. Also the Geno thread is awesome you all are the best, I really hope Geno does make it in because of how awesome and loyal you all are!

Happy to get your input buddy! I think we are hyping responsibly at the moment. Can't speak for everyone else, but this has been a pretty calm thread for the most part.

Thanks again!

Geno: JUST PUT HIM IN
Somehow missed this one. No, the assumption is that the third was on standby in case negotiations for the second one fell through but, that's the kicker, no one knows the end result. Boofer and Doofer were the finalists. Doofer got invited into the boss's office. Boofer sat in the lobby and derped on their phone. If Doofer didn't get the job, it's assumed that Boofer did with much smaller possibilities that they both got it or the boss decided that they both sucked and decided to start over.
Do you know who approached who first? If so, can you say?

And I'd hate to see a generic enemy secure a playable slot before my puppet savior, but I believe as Jagger said, you can't always get what you want.
I mean, a lot of people don't like Geno because he was only in one game as side character 20 years ago, so I don't think we are in room to criticize a generic enemy.

Which is a wrong argument by the way, as he was in one game as a main character 20 years ago. People need to get there facts in order, I tell you what.

This. I've seen people claim that he's a late game party member, an npc, and even an optional character that not every player runs into.

The Pikachu (let's go!) spirit pretty much proves that spirits don't mean anything for future DLC, but this is something I already suspected. My worry is that DLC was chosen before the game went gold, and Spirits who were going to be DLC were removed or never added at all. I doubt this is the case, though. Most non-playable characters only have one of spirit of themselves, so it shouldn't be too hard to add another render or artwork and label them as a fighter spirit. I don't know if they would change an existing spirit's status though. That would require removing their battle, which I don't think will happen. I guess they don't really need fighter spirits anyway though.

It mentions that if you link your Let's Go save file to your switch (which is automatic), you get the spirit automatically starting on dec 14th. Not sure if it shows up on spirit board otherwise, but probably.

It says Pikachu (Let's Go) and Eevee (Let's Go). Sorta like that Pit spirit named Pit (Classic). Even if spirits are deconfirmation, that just means they can redesign a character and it'll be completely different from a spirit.
I'm no Japanese expert, but the Twitter automatic translation seems to say they'll be added to the spirit board later.

This is the best news I've heard all week. If I hear someone argue that Geno or Ninten can't be DLC when new spirits can continue to be added I'll have to chalk it up to them being negative just to be negative.
The problem with that, though, is that the spirits with no indiciation that it is a variation is in fact a spirit that can't be a fighter spirit, unless a future update shows that current spirits can be relabeled. For now I still won't come forward and say that the spirit theory is false, bc until now it has consistently been true.

...They could literally just use fighter artwork like Cloud and have it as their classic mode Spirit. That's literally all they have to do.

But the current Geno spirit is listed just as Geno. Nothing else. The problem is not the art itself. It's the labelling

Can we stop with the hype responsibility **** please? We're all adults here. I'm allowed to give up my hopes if I choose to. I survived the Grinch leak; who care's if i get crushed one more time?

This was pretty much me. Also the thing that was bothering me about Spirits wasn't the ones in, it was the ones strangely missing like I said. I didn't mention before, but Piranha Plant was another one gone (which I'm sure people already knew but eh) and obviously he's dlc, so I thought maybe it was all planned before. However, Spirits being added after definitely boost Geno's chances, so that's good

I still would rather have Porky if I had to pick, but obviously Ninten is cool too lol. VGA's will be very intriguing if this Square rep really does get shown

Edit: yeah the naming thing too. I mentioned that, but now that I think about it they could always just rename it to Geno (classic) through a patch if he's added. It all depends if DLC and Spirits were planned before or not. Who knows

Call the new one Geno (Fighter).
But not a single fighter spirit is labelled that way. Again, it MIGHT be possible, but it's completely inconsistent to the system itself.
Not trying to downplay here, just playing devil's advocate so we get to the bottom of this
I'll only believe this is possible if relabelling of spirits is a thing.

They could do that for DLC characters

In a patch, it'd actually only take a few minutes to edit the name of the old Geno spirit to just Geno (Classic) if they needed to. Would take no time at all, really. Or just name the new Geno design's spirit Geno (Fighter).

Renaming a spirit is obviously possible, the only real question is whether or not they'd do it, but... That's such a non-issue? Like, do you really think having to change one line of text in the game is gonna prevent anyone from doing anything?

Mewtwo and Lucas's trophies in Smash 4 were never relabeled. No one cared back then.

We'll have to wait and see.
I find it weird that some major characters don't even have spirits. I think that a massacre would occur because, as much as the DLC deals were finalized a few weeks ago, the planning for them could have been done a long time ago.
Considering Cloud was the last one to get in. This means the deal with S-E had to be done before E3, and I doubt that they would wait a few months to go through the hassle again. I think that signing papers and formalizing stuff would take months, but determining the candidates would be defined way before E3. I think that it is possible that spirits were organized with the candidates in mind. Hence we have characters like Porky and Sylux without any spirits.

But dude, trophies weren't labelled. They aren't spirits. It's a completely different issue.

Again, I understand that the only way this would make sense is if a spirit is relabelled, in this case renaming the classic Geno artwork. But until now we can't say for certain they would do such a thing. I'll believe it if a spirit is relabelled in an update.

Man, this thread is always packed now. It almost never has less than 70 guests now

Porky is represented by a spirit, the absolutely safe capsule, and spirits do not deconfirm, we have long crossed that bridge now, so not having a spirit doesn't increase a character's chances

This is where the action is for anything relating to the potential Square rep, so it's quite understandable why that is.

Panther from Star Fox doesn't have one either. I don't think he's gonna be DLC. Also Sylux didn't have a trophy in Smash 4. His absense is nothing new.

Also Porky is the ASC. This was a purposeful choice by Itoi and Sakurai. It's not a absense of Porky. It's a joke.

Trophies did have names. There are two trophies in Smash 4 called "Mewtwo." No parentheses, nothing.

If this isn't a good place to post this just let me know, but slime does have ample moveset potential. I'd still rather Geno, but to say Slime cant do anything interesting is not remotely close to true.

I'd take a DQ character over another boring FF rep. DQ earned its character slot.

It's just an amazing feeling that Geno is so popular and well known in the Smash community when people claim that Nintendo and Square Enix don't care about him and he is an "obscure" character. Out of all the more well known Square Enix characters, he is one of the seven to be on a list, this is already a feat even if he doesn't make it. I really want him to make it, but even if he doesn't, he has been acknowledged by the creator of Super Smash Bros, he is always seen as the creation of the bonding of Nintendo and Square Enix, he represents the very first Mario RPG, and we wouldn't have gotten the Paper Mario games and the Mario and Luigi games. I don't care if the haters say he didn't make it to Smash because Nintendo didn't care about him, it's obvious that the fans love him, Nintendo acknowledged Super Mario RPG's 22nd anniversary, and he will never be forgotten

I think the main thing is that we won't know until the first DLC is revealed. Slice it however you like, Sylux being gone but the other hunters being there is just weird. Having all Rhythm Heaven characters except Marshal, Tibby and other ones is weird. Porky thing, maybe, but still, he was a boss in Brawl. All other bosses are here as Spirits. Plus why couldn't you still have the Porky Statue? That was a hazard as well. People just don't know, as with Sakurai mentioning Rex Mii costume, it makes it seem as if everything was already planned before. Plus, unlike trophies, Spirits can be used in game. So it's unknown territory. Stuff like Chrom we can assume was added last minute, as he uses the model from Robin's final smash, so that doesn't count. Also Piranha doesn't have one, so is it because they were intended for base, or everything was planned?

We won't know until the first DLC, but I think Spirits getting added post launch can point us to the right direction. Geno still has a pretty decent shot as of now, but we'll know soon enough probably

In my opinion, I don't think spirits matter at all for DLC. Pretty much every fan favorite is a spirit, and if they were to deconfirm DLC characters, then there goes a solid 1,297 potential candidates. They're just pictures added in so that it feels like you're playing as/fighting against a certain character who isn't in Smash, likely to appease everyone because they obviously can't add everyone's requests into the game. I don't think they're meant to be taken so seriously. If, for example, Sakurai wanted to add Geno in as DLC, but didn't know if he could definitely pull it off, then he added Geno in as a spirit just in case.

I don't know just thinking about it, it'd be really silly if Sakurai/Nintendo sat down and thought "you know, this person would be great as a DLC character, but you know they're already a spirit, so clearly I can't do that." Here's an easy solution to the issue: just don't allow DLC characters to be played in Spirits. It's that simple. If you don't want Geno fighting against the Geno spirit then just don't allow him to be playable in Spirits. I feel like this whole debate on spirits confirm vs. spirits deconfirm is sort of silly, because I don't think any of it really matters at all when affecting DLC chances. Sakurai just wanted to implement a way to make everyone happy, appease the crowd. I know this is said time and time again, but they're literally just png images effortlessly ripped from their original games.
