the close association but not owned really makes me think it may be a Golden Sun CHaracter like Isaac. that still has a strong fanbase, but seems destined to never get playable

The seemingly inevitable TWEWY2 announcement has really had me frightened for Neku to swoop in and steal Geno's spot at the last minute so I would be thrilled to think he's a costume.

I think Tansut said Neku isn't going to be a fighter, at least.

Given that Sony's still doing a presentation of their newest system this week, I've a hard time believing Microsoft and Nintendo wouldn't try to have something themselves this week

I see this rumor a lot but would say it's far from inevitable. TWEWY was a great game but final remix's sales were middling and I struggle to see how TWEWY 2 could reach a broader audience. To extrapolate:

  • I don't think TWEWY 2, as a timed exclusive, would drive much revenue for Nintendo or bring a lot of people to the console
  • I don't think Neku could drive a lot of Smash DLC sales
  • I don't think getting TWEWY 2 as a timed exclusive and promoting it with Neku in Smash is a particularly good deal for Nintendo (although it's a pretty good deal for SE)
I've mentioned before that I'm worried about Geno vis-a-vis Sora and 2B because any Kingdom Hearts port or a Nier:Automata port would be more profitable than anything Geno could be packaged with. I don't have that worry with TWEWY. It's a little fish in a big pond.

Tansut stated that all he knew was more TWEWY is on the way. He indicated that all the way back in October 2019, and then recently after the Anime Expo promotional art featuring TWEWY he again hinted that a sequel may be in works (but he also said that he hadn't heard anything new since October). Since he posted this in the Smash Ultimate thread on RESETERA, people started spreading the rumor that "Neku is confirmed to be in Smash". Tansut later clarified that he hadn't heard anything related to Smash, but he didn't "deconfirm" Neku either.

That said, protoblues protoblues has the right idea. TWEWY Final Remix did not sell all too hot, it did okay for a small scale port of the mobile version with some new content; but it's not like it put the series high up on SE's list.

That said, Nintendo did end up publishing Final Remix in the West; and we have gotten reps based around the time Nintendo helped publish their games (Bayonetta/DQ) but those had other supporting points too (Bayonetta won the "ballot", DQ is DQ). Chances are if TWEWY 2 is a real thing, Nintendo is likely funding it; because a company as stingy as Square likely wouldn't have any interest in a "smaller" selling series. So there is a chance that Neku may get in as a "shill" pick.

But in the end, I view Neku in the same light as Travis. They aren't really all that iconic/well-selling/demanded so aside from a cult fanbase, they really aren't all that likely as full-blown fighters. The most I can see for Travis/Neku are a bunch of spirits and a mii costume with music. The only reason they're being decently discussed is because they're getting more games in the future; thus their only way to get in as a fighter is through "shill" picks.

In my opinion though, the really underrated Square characters are one of Team Asano's characters (Bravely Default/Bravely Second/BD 2/Octopath); unlike Neku/Travis who lack "popularity", these games all are fairly popular and Bravely Default is getting another game soon. Their games have a pretty solid history with Nintendo too. I can totally see a Bravely character as a potential fighter.

So Sony made it offical that the event is thursday, Does that mean we should see something from Nintendo before or after then?

I could honestly see that happening. If you really sit and think about it, Western is the next frontier for major third party icons because Smash kind of already has almost all the really big Japanese ones. You got SEGA, Konami, Capcom, Namco, Square Enix, and SNK and then you even have some of the biggest "secondary" Japanese third parties in the form of Platinum, Atlus, and Armor Project. That's 9 third parties already and all of them have reasonable presence on at least two major company consoles and have for years. That's why I think for the remaining "big" icons that they're going to go Western and you have four that practically dominate the market with notable character driven franchises: Bethesda, Microsoft, Activision/Blizzard, and Ubisoft. Microsoft is, well, Microsoft and Activision/Blizzard is the biggest Western developer in the world but revenue, more reasons why I think these two would be at the front of the line.

You forget that Nintendo generally doesn't upload Directs/presentations on Fridays because it would be Saturday in Japan at the time. If the Direct/presentation happens this week, it's either before or on the same day as Sony's presentation

I think Gordon Freeman and/or a generic Vault Dweller (or just the Vault Boy) have a reasonable chance. I'd like to add some others, but I can't see them getting in.

I feel we are going to get FP7 revealed alongside the Arms rep.

Since Ultimate's reveal we have gotten two big reveals each summer (in 2018 It was Everyone is Here and Ridley and in 2019 Hero+Banjo). It makes sense to do the same this year too.

And before I get warned for chat derail, just gonna say that I feel FP7 will be an assist/Spirit promotion if Min Min happens to be FP6.

I'm being serious when I say this, I'm betting it'll either be Crash or Geno if we get multiple character reveals. Crash has the all-around popularity of Mega Man and Pac-Man while Geno has the Banjo and Ridley levels of fanservice popularity. Wouldn't surprise me if we got both announced as #7 and #8 respectively.
