This week's theme is giant eyebrows; no new spirits.

So we've done "Round characters", "Pink Character", "Spikey characters" and now......giant eyebrows? They must really be struggling over there.

PS. Rock Lee would be proud.

Kinda off-topic but I thought this was cool. Mario RPG getting at least some recognition.
  • Mario RPG related topic is off topic in the thread about Mario RPG

This thread is weird sometimes.

As for the lack of Luigi's Mansion 3 spirits, I know people want to write it off as a coincidence but the longer this goes on the weirder it looks. Here's a list of every game that Nintendo has published since New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, the entire 2019 lineup til now.
The List.png
Luigi's Mansion 3 looks a little more conspicuous now, doesn't it? Well, let's actually examine the games that didn't get Spirit Events.
  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, licensed game, pretty obvious
  • Yoshi's Crafted World, Crafted Yoshi is already a costume with a spirit in the game, and given that the game was originally set for a 2018 release thats likely why it was included in that way, similar to how Woolly World was in Smash 4.
  • Brain Age, Dr. Kawashima already has two spirits and an assist trophy, not much else they could really do.
  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions, slightly weird it didn't get one, but it was just a port of a Wii U game and it already had two spirits in the basegame
  • Mystery Dungeon, Pokemon Company is really damn weird when it comes to Smash Bros and that's likely why it has never recieved any content in Smash. They won't even let them use the Sugimori Art, save for Sword and Shield which seems to be the first main game where he isn't the art director, just a supervisor.
  • Super Mario Maker 2 : I'll admit this one is weird, buuuuuuut at the same time Builder Mario is already a costume, Mario Maker already has a stage, and mostly everything in the game is already a spirit, save for the interface characters. I'm reaching a bit but it still looks way less weird than Luigi's Mansion 3.
Now compare that to Luigi's Mansion 3. The biggest Nintendo release of last year sans Pokemon, they built up hype, it sold ridiculously well, has plenty of New characters, and has no representation in the game spirit wise, and yet, nothing. It becomes especially jarring when they went back and gave Astral Chain and Ring Fit Adventure spirits. Could they drop an event at anytime? Sure, but all the DLC is out now, so it isn't coinciding with anything, which I suppose isn't new. But still, it's been six months already, where the hell is it?

I think people actually starting to expect a character are getting WAAAAY ahead of themselves, and I will eat a shoe if Nintendo actually does, but something like a Gooigi Mii Hat fits in nicely. We've already seen them release events to coincide with costumes before with Cuphead. Nintendo didn't have any Mii Costumes in the first Pass unlike Smash 4, given that they actually planned DLC this time and added all the costumes they wanted to in the base game, maybe with Pass 2 they'll add some costumes for newer games they couldn't before, new first party mii costumes slot in pretty well with the ARMS rep being first party and all. (That, or it comes with a certain other Mario character, but what did I say about getting ahead of ourselves?)

Well, off-topic in a way since everyone was talking about Luigi's Mansion 3. Which is already off-topic from the thread, so I guess you could say it's off off-topic (if that makes any sense).

*realize Bowyer is deconfirmed* ****.

It would actually be pretty funny. What would be funnier would be him having an extremely tiny sword :4pacman:

Even if personnaly , I don't understand why nobody mention Kefka , the main bad guy of FF6 , a beloved SE RPG on the SNES. I know Sephiroth is more iconic and all , but I would like stuff from other FFs.

I mean, Luigi's Mansion also has a stage and is part of Luigi's moveset, characters like King Boo, E Gadd and Boo have spirits. Both are also offshoots of the Mario series. Luigi's Mansion and Mario Maker both already have a lot of content in the game and I'd say they're more similar than different.

The main difference is what can you add though? One is a level editor with pretty much all of it's aspects already in the game, the other is a brand new sequel with a bunch of new characters. Also should be noted that Nintendo really started ramping up the events around September or so, before then new Spirits were alot less common and generally included in events with other spirits as well rather than just focusing on them, which just raises more questions as to why they would skip over Luigi's Mansion 3 when that was around the time they started doing more events in the first place.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is already represented in Smash anyways. Luigi's Poltergust is clearly based on it.

So what? Labo already had a mii costume and that didn't stop them from doing a Spirit Event for it. The Poltergust being the Luigi's Mansion 3 version isn't really an explanation why they wouldn't do a Spirit Event.

Poltergust G-00 for Luigi Mansion 3 in Ultimate
Poltergust 5000 for Luigi Mansion 2 in Smash 4

Luigi’s Mansion 3 should have a yellow icon, though. Luigi’s Poltergust in the Simon trailer was basically an elaborate hint all on it’s own.

Apart from the unique character ghosts, there's not as much content you can mine for a Spirit Event. That and Gooigi is rumored to be a Mii Costume

I'm talking about Spirits specifically though. Now that I think about it, why would they go through the trouble of including the new poltergust a year before the game came out yet make it one of only two high profile Switch releases since Smash came out not to get any Spirits yet?

I mean for the Animal Crossing event all they did was add Spirits for the new NPC's, there is no reason they couldn't make some spirits for the new portrait ghosts, or atleast Gooigi given how much Nintendo pushed him. As for the mii costume I brought that up in the first post, if they are doing something like that then it make sense why we haven't had the event yet, waiting until the costume like they did with Cuphead.

Agreed. Kefka was great - probably the best villain they made. The NES and SNES era of games never got quite the same long term love as the PS1 games though. I never quite understood that, but then again, I was a Nintendo kid growing up, not so much a Playstation kid when it came out.
Unpopular opinion - I always thought FF7 and FF8 had the...I guess least interesting main cast members?
4, 6, and 9's cast better in my opinion, but it's unpopular because everyone remembers 7 and 8 and most likely 10 better.

Anyways, that's enough off topic.
Besides, we all know there's only one villain that deserves to be on this list for how much of a pain in the neck he was...

Yeah, that's fair. This may be an unpopular opinion but I hope that if Geno gets in, the only SMRPG costumes that come with him are the rumoured Mallow and Smithy ones. I'd be so much more hyped for a Square grab bag, with costumes like Sephiroth, Crono, Tifa, Barrett, Kefka, the return of Chocobo or any of the other IPs Squenix owns- it's a shame we didn't get much the first time round, and the second round was all DQ.

It's hard to imagine any more SMRPG costumes aside from those three so I am kind of in the same boat. A Square-Enix grab bag would be great honestly. On top of Geno getting in, getting content from Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Nier, TWEWY, Tomb Raider would be the best case scenario to include every major Square Enix brand. It's unlikely to happen, but would be a really neat thing to do.

Blocky PS1 Barrett and Tifa would also make for some really good Mii costumes for Brawler and Gunner.

I hear this thrown around a lot and while it could be a possibility, I can't for the life of me imagine Geno randomly coming back as a Mii Outfit. I know we did get one in Smash 4 and it could easily come back in Ultimate, but I just don't see that making any sense. Sakurai made a huge deal about the outfit in Smash 4 and even gave it a splash screen like normal fighters. Why would Sakurai bring back that outfit he made a big deal about when he can simply make Geno a playable character? Geno is such a popular request and I personally feel it would be the biggest slap in the face for us who have been wanting to see him included as an actual character for all these years. Unless Square decides to shill FF7 some more and include Sephiroth or get another one of their iconic characters like Sora or Lara included, then I think it is more likely Geno will be an actual character rather then an outfit honestly.

Do you know which Nintendo game was released even before Luigi's Mansion 3 and doesn't have spirits yet? No? Well, here's a hint:

COULD THIS MEAN THAT WE WILL GET AEON HERO (a.k.a. Galacta Knight) AS A DLC CHARACTER FOR SMASH?!?!?!

Not really, a missing spirit event doesn't mean that "X" character from "X" Nintendo game will get in Smash. Yes, it happened with Byleth but let's be honest, Fire Emblem is an exception, Nintendo has been trying to promote Fire Emblem through Smash since Melee. Also, why not having a spirit event makes it more likely? Look at ARMS for example, ARMS already had spirits in the base game but we are getting an ARMS character anyways...

Could Nintendo add King Boo to Smash to promote Luigi's Mansion 3? Of course, but why would Nintendo try to promote a game that sold THAT well? Wouldn't be better to promote games that had low sales? That's why Nintendo chose FE3H and ARMS, because they can get much more sales promoting these games than promoting a game that already sold well. But that's just my opinion.

TL;DR: No SKC spirits, no LM3 spirits, no spirit event =/= confirmed character for Smash, King Boo still possible (but unlikely in my opinion).

By the way, hi, I'm new here, I have been checking this thread anonymously for the past months but I finally decided to create an account, so hi everyone!

It doesn't matter what Square wants to shill, they can't make Nintendo or Sakurai do anything. If Square doesn't wanna give the rights to Geno due to irrelevancy, then we probably just won't get another Square character, Nintendo doesn't still owe them a spot. We also know Sakurai has gotten older characters from Square in the past even when they suggested more modern ones, he said when he went to Square for the rights to Cloud, they wanted him to include a character from a more modern FF game, but Sakurai got what he wanted in the end. The same would probably happen with Geno, and if Sakurai/Nintendo didn't get what they wanted, then they probably wouldn't get anything at all.

Geno would be lucky to even have a mallow costume in his pack.
Smithy is just a cherry on top.

Anyways, I should try to play through Mario RPG again, as I do really like Mario RPGs. I played it as a kid on an emulator and I’d really prefer not to do that again. Playing on an emulator has always felt weird and off to me. I’m just waiting for SMRPG to appear on Switch online, but they might be waiting for a certain Smash Bros. Tie in before that happens

I actually don't think you're wrong and we could very well not get another Square character. However, I meant that I can only see the Geno outfit coming back IF we do get another Square character that isn't Geno. But I don't see it happening in any other situation.

But it's all good guys, cuz Geno is coming. ;)

In all seriousness, we're now down to 5 weeks (5 weeks exactly from today will be June 10th), give or take a day, for E3's original dates (9th-11th). It's crazy how it feels like recently we were speculating on when the hell the Q1 direct was, and now we're already in May. Hopefully Geno is #7 and will be revealed soon to stop the madness that we've suffered for so long.

Exactly! As long as I know that Geno will get included, then I will finally feel at peace knowing I got two of my three most wanteds [Still hoping for Crash though]

Yeah for sure. BK was my (previous) #2, Geno's been my #1. Getting my #1 and #2 each in their own FPs makes it worth it. I wouldn't care who else comes after (or before in the case of #6), even if it's 4 characters I'm actively against plus a very piss-poor ARMS character.

This. I honestly can't stand it when a new game/character starts making the rounds or when a game gets DLC or an update and everyone immediately goes "HOLY **** IS [X character] FROM [Y new game] COMING TO SMASH?!". Most of these characters haven't even been known about for a day and you're already trying to push them as a potential Smash newcomer? And what's worse is that most of the people saying stuff like this don't actually want these characters in to begin with.

Case and point, when Ultimate was first revealed you couldn't go a few pages anywhere without someone calling an ARMS character for base game. But when base game came and went, nobody seemed to care about getting an ARMS character in Smash anymore. Then when an ARMS character was finally revealed in April, most people didn't really care all that much. "An ARMS character, who wanted this?! WHERE THE **** IS [X character]?! IF THERE'S NO [X character], THIS **** AIN'T SMASH BROS!" And it's the same with Akira Howard, Ring Fit Trainee, a Gen VIII Pokemon, and countless others. People only ever consider these characters because they're considered "safe choices", and that when they get in they can all run around shouting "WOW, I CALLED IT! I KNEW THEY WERE GETTING IN!"

By the way, hi, I'm new here, I have been checking this thread anonymously for the past months but I finally decided to create an account, so hi everyone!

TBH I expected an ARMS rep in base, but I never necessarily *wanted* one. I also didn't think there'd be one after Spring Man got AT'd.

I clicked, I saw the title, instantly downvoted and closed. Anything with "no Geno" is obviously fake. ;)

Same, though I was more neutral to an ARMS character than anything. My speculation often goes towards characters I'd actually really want to see get in, like K. Rool or Banjo. Or Geno.

If Geno does turn out to be FP7 like many of us are speculating, what would you guess to be his exact release date?

Not sure. But I still think religiously hanging onto the idea that Geno is FP7 is not the best idea. I think he has a chance, but I don't want to fall for the coincidence of him being 77 just because lol

SOME GENO MOTIVATION:
-No Mii Costume yet
-Copyrighted songs like Sans & Banjo
-Pattern of 2 songs per Square character
-Also 2 songs that fit perfectly for Geno. Forest Maze for him & Armed Boss for battles.
-“Back to the roots” scenario. Explained well in Terminal Montage video.
-First party being on topic (Geno is kind of a mix: being the ONLY Third Party coming from a First Party world)
-Costumes, Spirits or Assist don’t deconfirm
-More than 2 decades of fan demand
-Acknowledged by Sakurai himself
-Perfect moveset (timed hits)
-Perfect design to have more cartoonish characters
-“Not just recognizable; Fun to play”
-“We will be keep pleasing fans”
-Inkling, Chrom, KKR & Isabelle were from being costumes in Sm4sh to playables in Ultimate. Only missing Geno
-The “Big” are already here: Ridley, KKR and Banjo. Only missing Geno again. (You can add Isaac if you want).

AND NOW NUMBERS REASONS:
-Character #77 is the next, fits Geno.
-Square would repeat their character slot being the second of each Fighter Pass. Hero was the second and Geno will be the second here.

AND DONT FORGET:
-Geno is the second person to join your party in Mario RPG
-Geno gives you the Second Star
-That Star is green, like a Forest, fits Geno’s background image color.
-He is from MARIO WORLD, just imagine him reunited with his old friends + Mallow in some form (I hope a premium costume or part of his Final Smash), and we are done.
-To crossover it more, you can mix Geno with Kirby or Rosalina elements.

It all strengthens Geno’s chances to be playable in Smash. Just wait and see!

ALSO
ONLY 7 DAYS LEFT FOR GENO’s OFFICIAL 24° BIRTHDAY in USA! Hope to see some official news/tweets, SMRPG to the NSO and most important, Geno joining the SMASH PARTY soon! For me he is happening, I have believe and love in Geno since I had my SuperMarioRPG in 1996 and always root for him! He is happening now.
