Honestly I was just memeing about people wanting a tiny girl in a cute outfit into Smash. I was trying to hit both the making fun of weebs and the whole 'Hello Police' anime gag in one go without being specific enough to get mods breathing down my neck any more than normal.
Yeah, figures.

So I've been thinking about it and I think this is the potential indie Miis we could get

Hollow Knight (Became highly popular in Japan, one of those few indies like Undertale and Cuphead to get highlighted specifically by Nintendo in a Direct with high praise sung about it)

Cadence (Unlike Rocket League, it was a surprise to see Crypt of the Necrodancer get Nintnedo crossover content. But not cosmetics in a game expansion, but a whole new title. Nintendo never gives that sort of free reign of their properties, let alone Zelda, to an indie company)

MAYBE Ori (the supposed Ori content could just be a spirit, like Lotus)

Freddy Fazbear (Look, if memelord ideas like Sans could happen, Freddy is almost inevitable. It's not like it has no reason either. FNaF does have an audience in Japan, just look at Frantic_Ishii_JP for example, and the games had enough console demand for Switch releases to happen.)

Jacket (Devolver Digital have always had a strong presence with indie showcases from Nintendo, and I think Hotline Miami is one of those indies like Cuphead that Sakurai would gush over, espeically with its parallels to his buddy Suda51's works.)

MAYBE Steve (depends on if Chief happens, or if Doomguy happens first which would lessen Chief's shot. Also depends on if Nintendo would consider Minecraft an indie anymore.)
A nice selection, to be sure. I've made a list of the ones I'd like to see in the Newcomer Thread a while back, so I'll just link it here.
Man, that's a tough one. There are so many good ideas for Sans/Cuphead-esque Mii Costumes... I guess I'll go with these six:
1 - :ultswordfighter: Shovel Knight (Shovel Knight) - "Strike the Earth!"
2 - :ultswordfighter: Miriam (Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night) - "Voyage of Promise" or "Luxurious Overture"
3 - :ultbrawler: Madeline (Celeste) - "First Steps"
4 - :ultbrawler: Yooka & Laylee (Yooka-Laylee) - "Yooka-Laylee Main Theme (Remix)"
5 - :ultswordfighter: Conker (Conker's Bad Fur-Day) - "Windy and Co."
6 - :ultswordfighter: Ty (Ty the Tasmanian Tiger) - "Bull Pen"

And some bonus ones, because why the hell not?
A - :ultbrawler: Freddy Fazbear (Five Nights at Freddy's) - "Circus (Chex Mix)"
B - :ultgunner: Jonesy(M) / Penny(F) (Fortnite) - "Battle Royale Menu Music (Rock Version)" Victory theme when using the full costume is "Default Dance Theme"
C - :ultgunner: Iji (Iji) - "Face to Face"

Here's news for you

hmmmm...
I wouldn't post here otherwise (to legitimately discuss things, at least) the fact that FPv2 has an extra character has got me thinking.

Maybe Geno does have a decent shot. My theory is that they initially planned to finish off Ultimate DLC with another 5 character pass -- with characters that appeal to a general gaming audience, like the first pass -- but when they allocated the time and resources to create each of the fighters, the team found that they had the resources and time to create one extra character, and to decide on who they defaulted on the next Ballot character that they hadn't already included -- which is likely Geno (or Travis, but I think he would have been one of the 5 initially planned characters). Geno's a long shot for DLC otherwise, given that Nintendo corporate probably wouldn't expect a character with a fanbase as narrow as Geno's to be able to make a $5.99 fighter pack turn a profit, but if he's an "extra" pick this way, I can see Corporate approving Sakurai's proposal to add one of the most fan-requested characters.

but it seems hypocritical to mock Touhou fans for supporting KOS-MOS because of a leak that included her and Reimu when plenty of us Geno fans have been guilty of the exact same sort of thing with Doomguy and the Cacomallow pictures/video.
To be fair, a video leak containing high quality models and reaslistic animations in a supposed Development Build is much stronger evidence than a typical text-based leak on 4chan.

Hey all! So if you haven't heard by now, the Legacy XP and TE developers """decided""" to end development on their mods, which is automatically a sketchy situation. On top of this, their announcement was followed by a complete wiping of the mod itself off of their websites, their social media pages, and even their old SmashBoards thread. This raises many red flags, and I think that we can come to the conclusion that this was not a decision from them, but someone else. While many believed that Project M was shut down by Nintendo, it was actually a conscious decision from the developers! If Nintendo was the reason that Legacy XP and TE were shut down, the question is why?

Well, we've had a good history of Nintendo cutting off fan projects that could potentially interfere with their official plans. For instance, the AM2R project, a fan remake of Metroid II with updated graphics, music, and even some new features, was told to shut down by Nintendo. Only a year later, Metroid: Samus Returns was revealed! Super Mario 64 HD was a fan recreation of Bob-omb Battlefield in Unity that gained a lot of fan attention. It was also shut down by Nintendo in 2015, with the reveal of the first open-world Mario title we've had since 2002 being shown off a year later. There seems to be a pattern here!

So, what would be in Legacy XP that would catch Nintendo's eye and potentially shut them off as well? Maybe a certain denizen of the stars and a purple partner to the portly Wario?

Speculation is fun. :kirby:

Soon, we are moving into Next Week to see if a Nindies Direct is showing up. If it does, maybe a General Direct the week after? Not getting worked up on potential info being false, but a chance I'm giving it

Sure, Nintendo's removed projects that could take away from their own stuff, but they do that kind of stuff all the time regardless. Best example would be Kaze Emanuar's SM64 mods. Nintendo's been on his ass for a while now, so does that mean we're going to be getting an SM64/Banjo-Kazooie crossover game? And if that was really the case, then I guess we're also going to be getting a new Earthbound game since the guys behind Oddity, the game formerly known as Mother 4, changed their project's name and removed all reference to Earthbound completely of their own volition.

Question: Does anyone here actually like the Nindies Directs? I don't mind them myself, though I'd be lying if I said most of what they showed interested me.

I don't think I've ever watched one. Is it just indies that have been on PC/X1/PS4 and are now coming to Nintendo/are coming to all including Nintendo? If so, what's the point? Why showcase things that aren't even yours? Why not just throw them in at the end of a direct like that one in September(?) instead of teasing us with a "direct" we've been waiting for forever?

PS: Yes this extends to non-indie third party games too. I've never understood why anything gets showcased if it's not exclusive to *YOUR* platform.

For Kaze, I believe that they specifically targeted Super Mario 64 Online, and during the development of Odyssey, no less.

The developers of Oddity haven't told us why the name has changed, but I found that the name Oddity: Under the Moon was a title that had been leaked as far back as early 2019. It was most likely one of the names that they had on the table, as so much work has gone into it that they wouldn't want to see it sink for something as little as the name. It seems to me that the name change for them was their decision.

I think this might be more suspicious because Nintendo hasn’t really ever went specifically after project m stuff, despite knowing full well of its existence for quite some time.

And that includes the geno mods.

So something about this one feels a bit iffy...

Wynn was just all doom and gloom, with all his "**** Nintendo, they obviously hate us" crap. Icewolff92 Icewolff92 is just a skeptic. And his points are usually pretty well thought out, not just "lol spirits deconfirm" like Wynn.
I know it's just most of the time I feel like he is on the negative side of things. He definitely knows what he is talking about though.

Legacy XP got nuked with no explanation? That sucks...
Wait... WHAT?!!!

Nintendo usually doesn’t bother taking down mods without decent reasoning to do so and also if I recall correctly, Legacy XP has existed for over around a year or two so for it to be taken down now, of all times, is interesting

So... they are killing Legacy XP but not Super Smash Bros Flash? (how that game has survived for so long when they have included Goku and Luffy is beyond me) O.o

Flash isn't a mod but an original game just using various copyrighted characters.

So they're a very different situation. Do note that Nintendo worded their actual agreements(to owning the system itself, starting with the Wii) that you can't use "modifications" at all, to get around stuff like the Gameshark/etc., making them illegal to use. Mods fall under that. That's part of why stuff like this they can take down.

Things like Flash are closer to parodies. Besides that, it doesn't actually use their own game engine but is based around it, and frankly is also not a very good-working game all things considered. Flash 1 was completely awful and broken overall. Flash 2 was definitely better, but it's nowhere near the quality of the regular Smash games, so it's not even competition. Ergo, there's little reason to care as it'll never cause issues for them. However, if they try to make money off of it, they might start caring. It's also possible that other companies just laugh at it and see no reason to care. It's not just Nintendo being affected here either, but quite a few due to various guest characters. How many care about fan projects like this? Does the various characters from Shonen Jump's franchisee owners care? Is it worth pursuing? The game, in the end, is kind of a laughing stock a lot due to anime and OC's(never mind Smash has had legitimate OC's before, but only Giga Bowser, who isn't playable, is a "revision" like Blade is). And Smash doesn't have anime. Flash 2 did remove most anime characters bar a few being kept because they're popular/major characters, as well as removing the cartoon ones too. It's taken only slightly more serious and is highly controversial even then.

I get what you mean and you have a point.. but they kill of fan games constantly. Yet SSF has always gone untouched. Thats what made me so confused. And don't get me started on how Toei is with their properties

More than likely it's due to the 3rd party factors and the fact it's highly different from a lot of fangames. AMR2, for instance, is almost identical to the original Metroid 2, not just an original game loosely based upon it. It's almost identical to a hack in the way it's designed. One thing to note about Flash 2, like Flash 1, uses a lot of original sprites, which is another factor I didn't think of till now. That falls under parody/fanart by all means, so acting upon it might be more difficult than we think.

The Pokemon ones are almost all hacks too(which is why I'm worried for my own).

Toei maybe just doesn't want to mess with something so insignificant? If Flash 2 actually becomes so insanely popular, it could get hit with a C&D. A lot of times popularity plays a role.

Not saying it should or should not be taken down(to be frank, I don't have any issues with hacks/mods as long as they aren't competition or making money itself. That's why my only hack is going to be free and just for fun. Unless I get a giant truckload of cash and buy the IP of the hack, and then license use of the actual gameplay since it's literally Ruby/Sapphire being changed, well... it'll never be sold. So it's safe to say the idea is fun, but I'm screwed either way. The fact that it uses a dead IP as assets might mean it could be shrugged off, but I doubt it. Gamefreak and The Pokemon Company are a thing too. Nintendo might not care as much on their own, especially for unique IP's/not using a Nintendo IP outside of it being Pokemon hacked).

If memory serves, I'm pretty sure they sent C&Ds to the original Project M guys, and that was why they stopped. Don't quote me on that, though.

From my understanding, a Lawyer told them it could go bad and they eventually shut it down to be safe. No actual C&Ds existed.

Being a mod that had actual tournaments, and could technically make prize money, it was clear it was borderline enough anyway. They had legitimate reasons to be shut down overall, but it never happened by Nintendo.

I agree with Icewolff92 Icewolff92 here because Flash 2 has Toei/Shonen Jump characters like Goku, Naruto, Luffy, and Ichigo and that is going into much deeper copyright territory than putting in any Nintendo or 3rd party character in the game.

That was part of my point. It's not Nintendo's job alone to remove it. That's on tons of companies. Yet they don't care. They're using original sprites, which fall under parody.

If they tried to make money off of it, that'd be one thing. But it's completely free and isn't competing with any official games. Thus, the companies barely care. It's not usage of the IP, it's making money off the IP that a lot of issues come up. That's when a lot of companies can act. If people copy/hack an IP(game), they can also act. Parodies don't count any more than fanfiction/fan art. So it's not as easy for any of them to do anything because it isn't doing more than making a fanart of sorts based upon various IP's. It also is based upon the Smash mechanics but does not match them to a T enough. They're very very different in controls, graphics, and the worst issue could be music instead, not anything else. Using music in a game owned by another company, even under parody, tends to be something they can still sue/do something about. Parodying something is protected by the law(this is why parody songs can exist too).

Right now, Super Smash Flash 2 falls solely under parody for all intents and purposes. It's not directly changing a game somebody else made. This is a big reason, if not the core reason, why they do nothing. They probably can't. Even if they could, it doesn't do anything to hurt their IP's or cause them issues(that, and a thing about protecting one's IP's is that, though this may not apply everywhere, you need to do something as soon as possible or not be allowed to. Some can lose control of their IP if they don't act when they're actually able to. This is part of why a lot of Youtube takendowns for playthroughs happened. IP protection isn't just something they can do, but "must" do. Which is... kind of silly, to be honest, but copyright is one of the most nutsy laws there is). So it's complicated.

Another question. If they canned Project Legacy now... Why didn¨t they do it prior to Ultimates release if it truly is connected to something? That¨s the biggest question mark for me (especially concidering it contains the likes of Ridley)

Maybe I'm glad I didn't delete my Legacy XP file just yet. Nintendo or Square Enix really doesn't want anyone playing with Geno :c

SSF2 will always be an incomplete game without the addition of Mr. Incredible.

Another question. If they canned Project Legacy now... Why didn¨t they do it prior to Ultimates release if it truly is connected to something? That¨s the biggest question mark for me (especially concidering it contains the likes of Ridley)
Well Nintendo owns Ridley... But Square-Enix owns Geno so perhaps it has more to do with Square-Enix giving the axe to the mod.

Very unlikely it was really any of SE's own doing. Why Smash Flash 2 still exists but Legacy cannot is beyond me but I don't think it has anything to do with characters involved. Smash Flash is way more of a copyright nightmare to begin with.

Geno fans can never catch a break.

That is true. With Legacy Square-Enix could probably jump on that by themselves because of Geno being their property. But with Flash 2? Yes, it's certainly a copyright nightmare, but as Verde Coeden Scalesworth Verde Coeden Scalesworth has said it's more like it's seen as a parody and the copyright owners don't give two ***** about it and just ignore it.

But wouldn¨t it be Square that officially did it then?
The game had more than just Geno and Waluigi and I think that is what people are mistaking the most. The game included multiple Sonic characters as well as Lucina and a second Ganon

I think what it really comes down to between Legacy XP or PM is that Nintendo views them as altered versions of their own product (Super Smash Bros Brawl) It's why most Pokemon rom hacks never get anywhere. If they are seeing something that the public is going to mistake as a chinese knock off or bootleg, they are going to do what they can to prevent it from gaining any kind of traction or following.

If Nintendo were consistent, they would eliminate Super Smash Flash 2 as well but that will never happen considered it was made from the ground up. It's as relevant as that Mario Gun Game on Flash. (The lack of Geno in SSF2 does annoy me I admit lol)

Very fascinating with the XP mod being taken down. It can mean nothing or something.

We've had Project M being discontinued ... and we got Smash 4. Now we have Smash Ultimate DLC 2 coming out and now, out of the blue, XP/Legacy now going dark. It can mean nothing and just coincidence, but it could mean something.

As for the conversation about ownership ... remember too NINTENDO took down music tracks that didn't "belong" to them, like UnderTale and Banjo Kazooie music ... so this could mean something.

Come on Geno! Dear goodness give us something Nintendo!

But why not remove XP/Legacy before Ultimate is revealed then? That¨s what I don¨t get

Again, the thing we need to remember about all this is the timing.

Project m and legacy have been around for a long time now. More than long enough for Nintendo to have noticed and took action waaaaaay sooner.

Why now? Why now when we’re at the 2nd fighters pass? When lots of speculation is that a character is getting in that fans have been wanting for over a decade, and that said character just happens to be in the legacy mod?

Now this I can agree with. The timing is suspicious overall. It doesn't necessarily mean it'll amount to anything either, of course, but it's worth the speculation, imo.

Timing has played a role in many things. Hell, timing is a core reason for spirit speculation too.

So a Super Smash Bros. Fan project. Got taken down with it’s mods. Sucks but I wish them all the best.

Wonder what’s up?
