Not anything definite, just Nintendo scheduling their next major round of online maintenance on March 9th, making people cross their fingers for a Direct that week. It's kind of grasping at straws but it's something to talk about.

Nintendo didn't start acknowledging March 10 as Mario day until 2016. It was a Thursday that year, which was the same day as the previous direct on the 3rd, so it's safe to say they missed their chance to take advantage of it that year. It was Friday in 2017, Saturday in 2018, and Sunday last year - so this is the first year since its "official" inception they have the opportunity to take advantage of having a direct on that day.

Oh, come on! Don't be pessimistic. If Maintenance events usually mean a Direct is soon, key word, usually; as Fatman said, then there is a chance something may happen in terms of a Direct.

We've had directs or big updates often associated around the timing of maintenance periods, especially Smash DLC launches so I wouldn't call it entirely unrelated either.
In general I consider Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday to be the direct days. I feel like there have been a few on Tuesday but I just can't be assed to go prove it.

You don't have to. I don't completely believe it, maybe a little, but I guess I will let it slip. Still don't know of a Direct being on Mario day, though.

Hey there, sometimes, you don't need causation to know if things work out. Correlation may not be the same thing, and more chanced based, but I believe it may work, still.
Speaking of Mario day, I am surprised they have more of these than they gave Luigi days, let alone that Year of Luigi back in 2013. I mean, I know the Mario day may cover the Mario franchise as a whole, but still...
I keep saying that I want to do something special leading up to E3; would you all be interested in a formal campaign to support this on behalf of the Geno fanbase? It's an organization that helps with the comfort and care of children in long-term hospital care and it's literally based on stars and wishes. Honestly, how perfect would that be for the Geno fanbase to pool together for a cause like this? We have a collective energy that few other Smash fanbases have so why not do something with it? Why not grant some wishes for some kids who need it most?

I was just thinking about the possibility of a Mario direct actually. We’ve gotten directs for specific series and games before so it’s possible. They could announce dlc for Mario Maker 2 and Luigis Mansion 3, a port of Super Mario 3D World, the rumored Paper Mario game, and end it with Geno announced for Smash.

So originally I was going to let this go because it's really not worth responding too as the answer is simple enough, but it's getting a lot of likes so I feel the need to address this since apparently a lot of people share this opinion.
First off, there is nothing cringy about this. If you look outside of this thread (and even some of the people inside of it) the Smash community is like one big fat spoiled brat that constantly demands more from their Daddy Sakurai and belittles him and insults him whenever they don't get what they want. It's a perfect representation of rich kid status that I have ever seen and it makes it painful to spend time within the community because I'm tired of seeing it.
Proof of purchase? This entire thread was filled with mostly people who ACTUALLY thought that a dev picture taken super early in development (stated by Sakurai himself btw that all these pics are from BASE GAME DEVELOPMENT) meant we were going to get an updated OLD VERSION of a stage we already have that looks way better. It was clear to anyone who wasn't desperate that it was just a picture taken in-game on an old version of Battlefield before the new one was created to be stable enough to use, but the Smash community constantly needs more and more and will cling to any tiny thing that can mean anything when just a SMALL amount of logic disproves that.
Now that it's deconfirmed, what happened? Everyone has given up on a February Direct, and rather than just relax and breathe and have a slow burn until we get a official announcement...MAINTENANCE ON THE 9TH! OMG GUYS DOES THIS CONFIRM A DIRECT ON THE 9TH/10TH?! AAAAAaaaAAAhhhHHHhhhHH~!
We can't go more than a day without somebody desperately clinging onto something and making the whole fanbase look like mindless apes. Anytime ANYTHING that can REMOTELY be tied to Smash, everyone starts hopping up and down like monkeys at the zoo when the feeder comes by. When I call the fanbase pathetic and rabid, this is what I mean.
I see a fanbase that tears one another apart just because of the character they want. I see people in the chat and comments of EVERY SINGLE NINTENDO ANNOUNCEMENT talking about Smash and hoping for Smash content even when it's clearly a Nindies or a Direct dedicated to a single game or after we LITERALLY just got Smash news. I see people saying Sakurai should be fired or should go commit sudoku just because a character they didn't want got in. I see reactors screeching 'IS IT SMASH? IS THIS SMASH?' and people acting like they are losing their minds just because Nintendo hasn't announced anything in a little while. Just because it's longer than it has been doesn't mean you all have to come unglued!
If you want to know what is tearing the fanbase apart and keeping people like my buddy Adam from getting into Smash, it's those of you who act like this. Like Smash Bros is the SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR LIFE and you NEED more news or you will GO INSANE AND DIE. I get tired of coming in here and seeing people latching on to stupid fake leaks and information that means nothing just because you have made yourself so desperate for information on a ****ing video game. Hell, people come in here to flame us for having an opinion and Fatman has been threatened to have his parents's information given to the public over A MOTHER****ING VIDEOGAME!
The sad part of it all is, right here in this thread is the tamest of all this. There are places WORSE than this. This is why I'm so fresh with people here anymore because I can't be bothered to hold back any longer.
Also, you are just flat out wrong. I didn't take an easier route: I took the logical and correct route. Occam's Razor and all that. The simplest answer was that it was an early semi-updated Battlefield that got scrapped but before that Sakurai took a dev pic with it. Just because you took more time to think up of wacky possibilities that were far-fetched doesn't make me in the wrong somehow, especially when I turned out to be right.
I'm not higher than any of you, but I DO consistently think things through and gather FACTS and use LOGIC to come to a conclusion. I did that when it came to us getting more content, and I was right. I did that when it came to the timeline of events for more DLC and we have yet to see if that's the case but it's very highly likely I'm right as Sakurai himself said #6 is ready to launch already. I did that when I stated that a Direct in March is more likely, and where are we looking in those regards? I did that with the Battlefield thing, and I was right.
Literally anyone can do what I'm doing: not jump to conclusions, gather evidence and use your brains to come up with the logical conclusion. Also, I mentioned there was an easy response to this, that is as such: If it doesn't apply to you, then it doesn't apply to you, so ignore it. Don't be so overly sensitive to think that someone is calling you something when they applying it to the majority and you fall in the minority. Much like being offended at insults, that falls on you and not on me. Knowing it didn't apply to you, you could have just ignored it entirely because 'Well, I don't act like that, so he's not talking about ME.' yet you did anyway for whatever reason and now here we are with me pointing out again how silly it was to think that stage coming was even possible while also putting the community on blast for being as toxic as it is.

So us speculating about Smash things on SMASHBOARDS is tantamount to us being entitled? How the **** did you come to that conclusion? Where's the correlation here? How is people speculating on an image anywhere close to similar to demanding something?

And I'm sorry that there are stupid people in this fandom saying and doing stupid things. I keep trying to keep them out, putting out the traps and whatnot, but somehow they just keep getting back in.

Jesus man, I know that strawman is nice and soft and all, but that doesn't give you the right to beat it up this badly. Yeah, fandoms have bad people in them, terrible people even, but they aren't the majority.

Woah, better watch the HELL out, everybody! Rock Lee is takin' off his goddamn weights, he ain't holdin' back any longer! Mr. Mentos is gonna get FRESH with you!

>You guys are a bunch of spoiled, entitled, toxic idiots who act like crazed consumerist apes when you don't get your precious Smash news, who harass Sakurai and eachother over stupid **** and don't use FACTS AND LOGIC when speculating, falling for every fake leak and dumb speculation that you see like the gullible little lemmings that you are
>But I'm not saying I'm better than you or anything
Forget strawmen, you're beating up ****ing hay bales.
First off, if you're not talking about us, why would you post this long diatribe in our thread then? Did you do it for the sake of the one guy out of the 20 or so regulars who fits your broad criteria? Second, it's kind of hard to ignore said diatribe when you don't at least put it behind a spoiler, especially due to it's sheer volume. Nobody wants to scroll past several screens worth of text walls.

This post is the literary equivalent of dropping a nuke on a populated town to get rid of criminals. If other people get radiation sickness from it, or other people feel what you did was overkill and entirely unwarrented, do they not have the right to complain about it or hold you accountable?
and now here we are with me pointing out again how silly it was to think that stage coming was even possible while also putting the community on blast for being as toxic as it is.
Firstly, speculation isn't silly. If that's really what you think then maybe you shouldn't be here anymore. And second, this long-winded rant was completely unnecessary for a variety of reasons, with chief among them being that most if not all of the people here both don't apply and don't really care to hear it, especially considering how broad you are with your criticisms.
I don't remember who it was that was talking about how wild it'd be for Geno to be revealed on March 9 and released on May 13 (the JP and US releases of Mario RPG, respectively) way back when Terry was coming out, but whoever it was, pat yourself on the back, because a situation I thought would be too perfect has suddenly developed potential. Just imagine this scenario:
Nintendo announces a direct on March 9 for March 10 (Super Mario RPG -> Mar10 Day)
Geno revealed to be 6 in the Mar10 Direct
Joker Amiibo releases in April with the re-release of P. Plant, Isabelle and K. Rool
Geno ready to go with 8.0.0 on May 13 (a Wednesday, on which we've gotten 3 out of 5 DLC characters)
Oh my god, galaxy brain time.
- Doomguy is revealed during the VGAs
- Comes out sometime in February
- Nintendo Direct happens on March 9th
- Super Mario RPG and other games come to NSO that day
- Geno is revealed for Smash
- Geno drops on May 13th
March 9th and May 13th are when Super Mario RPG was released in Japan and the US, respectively. IT'S THE PERFECT CRIME!
Yeah, sure. But by will be, I wasn't counting if they broke the record by now, as in, saving the moment until the next Direct comes.
...Even though it already is, of course. Nintendo undoubtedly has broken the record now, even if I meant what I said about waiting for the Direct before saying so.

Agreed, it's a video game, so I'm not gonna bother arguing that my thoughts weren't wacky and farfetched (cuz they're based on my experience, not made up and clearly conflict with your own takes) and that we're not mindless apes cuz I win nothing by doing so.
I recommend you take a vacation from here mate before you have an aneurysm. I don't even mean this in an insulting way. After reading all that you're clearly not happy being here and don't seem far from breaking down.
Take a break, tune in whenever the Direct is, enjoy the new fighters when they drop. Godspeed.
