All this SMRPG talk makes me want to replay it. I wonder what they would've done if they were to do something like Persona 5 Royale for example, expanding on the storyline a bit. I would've added another female fighter who is physical and maybe another animal typed fighter who is faster than Geno, but weakest of the entire team physically

so there’s a big push for Waluigi on this thread, there’s been some good points, but

1. Although not impossible, getting two characters from the same universe seems unlikely if you believe Geno is going to be an actual character in this pass. If this does end up happening I kind of see these two being introduced in the same trailer.

2. He is an assist trophy already, although I don’t believe this disconfirms a character outright, you do have to consider its possible that those characters were intended for a specific purpose. Turning him into a full character, affects the gameplay. It either adds confusion to which player is who, or if by some chance he is not accessible when picked, reduces the amount of assist characters being used.
Personally spirits and costumes seem more likely to get promotions to me in this regard since adding a character doesn’t really upset that balance.

3. Popularity and Competition. Waluigi doesn’t even seem to be all that popular as a character? A character like Geno who hasn’t been relevant for years still ends up on a majority of polls and fan wishlists more often than Waluigi. Maybe he’s seen a surge in popularity recently, but that’s kind of a bad thing since it seems that the second season dlc pack was likely decided on some time ago. Even as far as assist trophies go you have the likes of Shadow,Spring Man, Isaac, Skull Kid, Samurai Goroh, Knuckles,Krystal, etc.. to compete with. There’s even Dixie Kong as well and new Pokémon .

I wouldn’t even go as far to compare him with K Rool, Ridley, and Daisy either. Both K Rool and Ridley have been highly requested for a awhile, it was bound to happen. Daisy got in because she could be easily developed.

Assuming this pass is mostly 3rd party characters like the first and maybe we get 3 Nintendo characters, Waluigi being one of them seems like a pretty low chance of happening.

So, a general Direct and an Animal Crossing Direct? Makes sense. Looking at Nintendo's history, they usually do specific Directs no less than a month out from major releases. This happened last year with Mario Maker 2 and Smash Ultimate the year before that off the top of my head. Like Zippo said, February 20th is literally a month off from New Horizons release so that's probably intentional. Hopefully the general Direct is this week.

1. Actually kinda agree with you on this. People will argue about it but at the end of the day they are still both Mario characters regardless of how different they are

2.Certain pokemon and assist trophies already don't show up on certain stages, it is literally as simple as making it so Waluigi doesn't appear when Waluigi is being played, that is it.

3. I don't know where this whole "Waluigi isn't that popular" thing comes from. Aside from Toad (and whether or not we count him is another question entirely), Waluigi is the most popular and well known Nintendo character not playable in Smash. Him being an assist trophy was made a WAY bigger deal than anyone else, it was all over the place. This isn't just about the Smash community, I'm talking in general here. If any assist trophy gets promoted its him BY A MILE.

I don't even have any faith in him showing up, I don't care about him at all. But I think if we do get another first-party character that isn't a shill pick, it's him.

For everyone saying that Waluigi being made an AT made the biggest waves I'm going to ask if you remember why that was. It wasn't because a large amount of people complaining but because a few users issued death threats and made a comparison of Sakurai to Hitler causing the Smash community to start fighting amongst itself. For a while Waluigi even completely left all talking points due him being a taboo subject because a very small amount of people. I believe looking into it someone stated only two users did the harmful and toxic actions but don't quote me on that. Other ATs also received plenty of attention. When Ashley was AT there was a lot of general disappointment and Isaac's reveal as an AT was booed at the showing in the Nintendo store and those people cheer at freaking everything. Please don't conflate controversy with popularity. Not saying Waluigi isn't majorly popular just there was far more that happened then people just being sad he wasn't in.

Animal Crossing pre-orders in japan will start next Friday I think, so it makes sense to have a General Direct this Thursday 6th, with their own segment of 4/5 minutes.

Then, at 20th we will have a dedicated Animal Crossing Direct, after that, the game will be available to pre-purchase at local eshop.

Yeah I know how you feel. It's been probably over a year so I'm itching to play it once again. Wonder if I should go with a romhack or vanilla... Considering waiting to see if we get an NSO update, as if I wanted to play vanilla, it'd be nice to finally play it on my Switch.

It wasnt on the snes mini so I'm not sure it would make it. That thing is very moldable though so playing it on it is easy

Yes it was. That's kind of one of the main reasons we are speculating it coming to the online in the first place, it, along with Earthbound, Donkey Kong Country, and FFVI, is one of the only games not on SNES Online from the Mini that hasn't had a different port onto Switch already. (Super Castlevania IV, Mega Man X, SSF2T, Secret of Mana, Contra 3)

I have a tradition of playing through the game once a year. I think I'll play it again a week before E3 for good luck.

We will have to wait tomorrow to find out of an announcement for a direct. Nintendo usually post about the direct of general or specific topic 2 days before broadcast

So two Nintendo Directs? Huh One for A general Nintendo Direct and one for Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Sounds awesome I look forward to both if they happen For the general Nintendo Direct I hope, we get information about, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 sequel, maybe stuff about Bayonetta 3, and of course a little about Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

For the Animal Crossing: New Horizons I am looking forward to that. Game is going to be incredible I look forward to more support, for information on the other villagers, and what else you can do on the island.

Wah His name has risen once again wah! Okay all jokes aside I don’t know if it happens I’m not even sure it will But Waluigi. Words couldn’t express how happy I’d be to see him in, this bizarre charismatic, strange plumber is one I’d. Love his move set and want him in.

I don’t know if it’ll happen if it doesn’t I’ll shrug and move on. But if it does I’ll be happy for His fans and happy he’s in.

The second row are the characters for pass 2, and the third row are bonus dlc that can be put in between these pass 2 dlc.
Would you be happy with it?

As tiresome as it would be to wait longer for the general Direct, I think if we are getting two Directs this month than I believe the Animal Crossing Direct is coming first.

That would make 15 DLC characters in total. That many characters if the last 4 include stages would also fill up the stage select screen if I'm not mistaken.

I don’t really understand what you mean by bonus dlc in between other dlc. Pretty sure wave 2 is just going to be 6 characters. And if that’s the case then nah. My preference would be for Geno to get in his own fighters pass.

Oh no, I just reminded, I had a dream were everyone got a facepalm over an Animal Crossing direct, related to placing furniture inside the house, but you could have more than one room, the camera rotates as you walk through the hallways and stuff.
I don't know why I felt dissapointed but it looked so good!

Basically just realized that SMRPG is the only Mario game where Mario has mostly the same energy as Link. He's a silent protagonist but does whatever he wants. Terrifyingly enough, he can jump several times his own height and shoot fire out of his hands. He goes into people's houses without asking and jumps on their roofs, sometimes forcing himself down the chimney in broad daylight. His only way of communication is dramatic pantomime and only vocal sounds are loud grunts and shrill screams. Unlike Link who is predominantly stoic, Mario has virtually no emotional regulation and wildly displays his emotions through sweeping and dramatic actions. SMRPG Mario is pretty much a cryptid but everyone's just kind of cool with it because he's literally the only one that can protect the country.
This isn't really subversive in any way for the time period. It's copy and pasting RPG tropes onto Mario and what he's known for (jumping). Any time this stuff is parodied in Japanese media (just letting the hero go into people's houses and do whatever they want, silent protagonist, etc), it's always a direct reference to Dragon Quest.

I know DQ is big but, I think it's just the genre and not a direct "Dragon Quest" Reference just because the hero can go into people's houses. I mean, it goes deeper than that.

But that's why it's funny. Mario isn't a silent protagonist with a largely blank slate personality. Yeah, Mario isn't exactly the deepest character ever but it's pretty well established the kind of character Mario is. In SMRPG, he takes the tropes you mentioned to extremes. Not only can he go into people's houses but he can jump on people's beds and shelves and even on the roof for most houses. He's silent but instead of just nodding and basic emotions, he's extreme in everything. He even transforms into things to get his point across. It's like Courage the Cowardly Dog. It's funny because it's hyperbolic.

And don't forget Bowser's participation, I love when the bad guy is more than just that, this was the first time we could see some "personality" on Bowser and Peach for the record.

It's RPGs in general, but any time a Japanese product does it, it's directly invoking DQ. The original Final Fantasy, Zelda games beyond 1, virtually every single SNES/PSX era JRPG, etc. Even the deconstructions where you're punished for it (I believe the Glory of Heracles series is the first time that happens but I could be wrong) date back to the late 80s and are confirmed inspired by DQ for those aspects.

It's the same with how any time you see a generic fantasy setting in an anime (especially ones that aren't specifically fantasy so like dream sequences and stuff), it's always invoking Dragon Quest.

But that's why it's funny. Mario isn't a silent protagonist with a largely blank slate personality.
I mean he kind of is. He's expressive, but in the same way Wind Waker Link is canoncially talkative. There was certainly an idea of what Mario should be, but there was also a huge discrepancy between the west and Japan on that front in the 90s thanks to things like the Super Show and other entities that made him his own character. For a US audience, SMPRG released in that weird void between Super Show and Charles Martinet (at least as far as public perception goes since most people were unaware of him until 64).

He's also not even close to the first highly expressive silent protagonist, though a lot of those were unfortunately Japan-exclusive.

Thinking about it now, I wouldn't be surprised if Mario was somewhat based off Crono in that regard as Chrono Trigger released just as SMRPG entered development in full.

Does anyone have any more-recentish polls for wanted Smash Bros characters? Someone I know was saying Geno wasn't very highly requested on the more recent polls but didn't remember where he saw them. I mentioned he has had support for a long time but his point was that Geno wasn't top-of-the-list.

Aight so we got til tomorrow or wednesday for any announcements for the direct. Im under the belief it'll be next week, but hopefully we get it soon. Really want to see if that Crash leaker is right. If he is, it may show some credibility to that mii costume leak earlier last year.

And if they don't for whatever reason show the next fighter this direct... Then uh... Yikes.
