Sakurai literally said that more requests will be granted in the Banjo interview. What if the Mallow or Smithy costume leak wasn’t real all along? Pretty unlikely that Square Enix characters would come with Terry. Or the 5th fighter unless there’s an Akita costume. Anyways... putting the dead horse aside, I've been thinking about what Fatmanonice said regarding the characters being talked about. How most of then have been wanted for a decently long time yet have been discarded by the larger Smash fandom. I've been trying to rack my brain thinking about who those could be (3rd parties, as I'm sure most if not all of the DLC will continue to be that).

Honestly, when I hear characters wanted for a bit, but discarded for reasons, I think of three characters immediately: Geno, Rayman, and Sora. These characters aren't necessarily personal wants of mine, but being objective about what Fatmanonice said, these are the three that fit that description (in my eyes).

What do you all think? Were the three I provided accurate? Do you have any additions to my list? I'm wondering what people think, as I have been suprised to see not many people speculating about this particular comment in here much.

Almost all the big 3rd party requests from the Brawl era are already in Smash's roster excluding Geno, Bomberman, Sora, Crono, and Lloyd.

Lloyd definitely was discarded in the fandom from my understanding. A lot of people wanted him in Brawl, but the support kinda started dying out afterwards. There's still some people who support him, but it isn't as big as before

Also, maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not sure if Sora was discarded? From my POV, I think he only started getting support around 4 and it's grown a lot now in Ultimate's cycle. Could be wrong, but I don't see him as a discarded pick

You could totally be right about Lloyd being discarded, and I may just not know. I will say it is suspect that his Mii Costume hasn't returned and we haven't gotten another Bandai Namco character yet (him or Nightmare from Soul Calibur make sense to me).

As for Sora, I definitely think he has been cast aside a bit in the sense of while he is popular, he also as big detractors that cite Disney as their silver bullet regarding his chances. But he has been popular as of late, so I don't know, this really is up to interpretation what a person would consider "discarded."

Regardless, all the characters we've talked about (Geno, Rayman, Sora, Crash, Lloyd) are all likely candidates. I definitely think we'll get one, if not two of these characters.

1. Banjo-Kazooie is the newest playable third-party franchise.

No, no, I know that they just came out in September, that’s not what I mean. With Bayonetta essentially going full second-party in recent years, the most recent playable third-party franchise in Smash is from a series that debuted just over twenty years ago. SMT and Metal Gear both predate it, even Persona itself does.

It’s not something that you really notice when you see a bunch of recent characters like Joker and Hero, but franchise-wise, that really does turn out to be the case.

2. If you turn the clock back twenty years, there are no returning companies in the Fighters Pass.

The two characters that kicked off the pass that most consider as being from returning companies... technically aren’t. Atlus and Enix were both completely separate companies with their own original game franchises that started far, far before the acquisition and merger respectively, and literally nothing from either company appeared in Smash before Ultimate(I would say “before their DLC” but technically Atlus did have a single #FE spirit).

While I don’t necessarily 100% think that the final character has to follow the above two criteria(being an older character from a company that hasn’t had playable representation in the game yet), here are some revised #5 predictions that follow this setup:

-Master Chief (serves as Microsoft’s introduction, considering Rare separately)
-Digimon Rep (serves as Bandai’s introduction)
-Lara Croft (Eidos)
-Ryu Hayabusa(unlikely due to Sabi’s source, I’m aware, but I’m noting it anyway since it does fit the criteria to a T)
-Crash/Spyro(same as the above)
-Ratchet (Sony, since both Crash and Spyro are Activision now)
-Doomguy (Id/Bethesda)
-Scorpion (Midway)
-Gordon Freeman/TF Class (Valve)
-Reimu (Touhou Project)

The newest characters there are both from 2001, but even then it wouldn’t surprise me if the pick was substantially older. Hell, I’m still not counting out a truly out-of-nowhere retro rep like Space Invaders or Pitfall Harry.

Again, I want to stress that I don’t think that the final character absolutely 100% has to follow these criteria, it’s more of a potential theory.

No I didn't skip over it. I don't think a Capcom or a Namco rep or any rep in general is a lock honestly. Closest thing to a lock from what I could recall was the Inklings as everyone and their mothers knew all the way back in Smash 4 they were going to be DLC in that game or in Smash 5/Ultimate.

I've seen this all over the net and this thread so this isn't explicitly aimed at anyone in particular, the fanboy in me needs to let it out before I pop.

Joker does not represent smt. At all. Persona and smt have nothing to do with each other that isn't shared by literally any other atlus rpg to some degree. Even then he really only represents modern persona with all of his content focused predominately on p5(himself,series icon,stage,spirit board, majority of music and spirits) with some smaller references to 3 and 4 in the music and spirits. Which seems in line with how they want to pretend the earlier personas dont exist but i digress.

This is what I have been wondering. I could see a route reminiscent of the bosses from the game. Pit = Boyer, Metal DDD as Smithy, etc. But I think it would be awesome to have Mario, Peach and Bowser join you in some fights along the way. Mario could be with you for Smithy and the Hands fight.

What is the point of spending your free time on a thread just to tell people not to be hopeful or excited? Things point positively towards Geno coming in as DLC so people are excited about that fact. If it doesn’t work out then that’s disappointing but so what? Fair weather fans will choose to ditch him and bandwagon some other character and the rest of us will just hope he gets in a future installment. So I don’t see why people who explicitly say they don’t even want him in the freaking game make excuses to spend so much time in a character support thread. Like there are perfectly fine general newcomer speculation threads out there where you can do literally the same thing.

If I absolutely HAD to pick who I thought was the best bet for fighter #5, I would say Lloyd. But I still think the rest of Adam's list are very strong contenders for post pass.
