This looks like a really solid list guys. Not going to really agree with Blood + but the rest looks pretty fair.
I would add something but outside of the usual Key anime I haven't seen anything that I think everyone would like. My taste are a bit odd anyway.
If I were to try and throw a few out there I'd say
Katanagatari (Final Episode Coming out this Friday. Hyyypppeeeeed)
Code Geass (Gurren, Neon Genesis..But not this? D: )
--------- And a list of odd anime I happened to like
Fairy Tale
To Aru Kagaku no Railgun
The Legend Of Legendary Heroes (Ongoing)
Hunter X Hunter
Working!!
@Derp
Depends if you want to include the TV Special.
Ignore the numbers. These may have also already been suggested, it's the Top10 voted anime in Japan. No real order to it AFAIK from where I copied it. (It has an order, but this isn't it)
Anime: (TV = TV Series, Movie is self explanatory)
1. Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV)
2. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie)
3. Laputa: Castle in the Sky (movie)
4. Mobile Suit Gundam (TV)
5. Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (movie)
6. Mushi-Shi (TV)
7. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV)
8. My Neighbor Totoro (movie)
9. Fullmetal Alchemist (TV)
10. Ghost in the Shell (movie)
最終兵器彼女 / Saikano / She, The Ultimate Weapon
Bad summary is bad but here:
Shuuji and Chise are third year student at a high school in Hokkaido. The shy Chise is finally confessing to Shuuji, and finally two of them are starting to exchange diary awkwardly. One day, Shuuji tried to escape from a sudden enemy air raid on Sapporo. While desperately escaping from the air raid, Shuuji saw a scene that he could not forget for his life. He saw Chise, with a huge weapon looking as if it was part of her hand, shooting the enemy fighters down one by one. Apparently, Chise is the ultimate weapon with destructive power which is important for the war.
交響詩篇エウレカセブン (Eureka Seven)
I hate copying plot summaries but I'm lazy:
Renton Thurston is a 14-year-old boy who lived with his mechanic grandfather in a backwater town. Every day he dreamed of being with the mercenary "Light Finding Operation (LFO)" aircraft pilot group "Gekkostate" and riding "Trapar" particle waves-- a sport called "reffing"-- with their charismatic leader Holland, especially when faced with his father's acclaimed past or his grandfather's desire to protect him. When a young girl named Eureka riding the original LFO, the "Nirvash typeZERO", asks his grandfather for a tune-up, she inadvertently brings the attention of the military to the garage; as a result, the garage is destroyed and Renton is forced to deliver a new type of interface-- the "Amita Drive"-- to the Nirvash. After a heated fight in which the Nirvash destroys the military LFOs by unleashing an immense amount of power, Renton is invited into Gekkostate. However, he quickly realizes that behind the facade of a traveling group of mercenaries is a very bitter reality.
A young woman quietly falls to the earth, escorted by a solitary crow. This sort of dream, as many other before have dreamed, comes just before the rebirth as a haibane, a charcoal winged angel.
Rakka is born from a large cocoon into the Old Home, greeted by a group of Haibane with small wings on their backs and shining halos above their heads. Soon Rakka’s own wings grow, a halo is placed on her head. She soon realizes that the town and the entire world they live in are confined behind the Wall, a tall, impenetrable wall that none except the mysterious Toga are allowed to exit.
She awakens into an unfamiliar world with only the dream of falling from the sky as her only memory. Alone and scared of who and what she is, she is cared for by fellow Haibane as they try and search for the meaning of their existence as well as what lies beyond the town's walls.
I'm really not sure whether I think P&S is good, or whether its a piece of crap that should be burned...
@SuSa: I've never seen the anime, but if its similar to the manga version, I don't think I would reccomend Saikano to someone who isn't a fan of anime/manga and that obscure horror/slice-of-life/sci-fi genre in general...
But people have different tastes in anime/manga. I personally gave Higurashi a 10/10. I know people who've given it a 3. And I love Saikano, but then again, I like anime/ manga from almost every genre in existence...
Lucky Star was great, but it spawned a wave of moecrap that plagues the industry now. Plagues. Not that most of the people who watch anime on SWF agree, you all worship KEY and JCStaff. @_@

Most of the anime thread is Moe***s, tsundere/loli***s, and people who watched TTGL and then just discovered the wonders of Gainax, like FLCL and Evangelion.
No love for great stuff like Beserk, Black Lagoon there. Noooooooooooooooooooope.
HINT WATCH THESE THEY'RE GREAT EVEN IF YOU DON'T LIKE ANIME. THEY FEATURE ACTUAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!

Lol! Yeah, it's really funny how it took TTGL (an anime that I didn't that was that great) for people to discover the wonderment that is FLCL and Evangelion.
A must watch in my opinion of Gainax works are Otaku no Video, Nadia, FLCL, Evangelion, Gunbuster, and Diebuster.
Everything else to me was OK or not worth watching. I really like Re: Cutey Honey though. That shiz was fun. The gun scenes screamed FLCL.

I don't know, I never really got why everyone seems to love Lucky Star. I checked it out and found it pretty boring and un-funny.
Plague would be a good word to describe moe, I'm pretty western-minded (I watch anime dubbed and generally prefer action-oriented anime/manga) but I just find it annoying how these days anime seems to be all about this:
It's saying like this that further enforce my stance of feeling that it was an ok anime.
It was honestly FLCL, Evangelion, and DBZ power ups in a blender.
My first run through TTGL I thought the series was going to be in my top 5. Then the
time skip happened
and turned the anime into something I definitely didn't like. It got a lot darker and much more random. Anti-spirals? Where the fack did that come from? Oo hey let's kill all of
Team Dai-Gurren.
Are you kidding me?
The show was definitely pretty and the music was definitely a fun time, but I felt that it didn't show up after half time. I felt as if the show quit on me.
I would love to hear someone's opinion on why it was a good show without using GAR as a reference. =D
Maybe I just need someone to explain the show to me better. I might have missed a key point after watching through it twice and through the movies once.
Gurren Lagann is not special in its themes. Sure, it's a shining example of human resilience in the face of absolute despair, and is the sort of thing that can start to inspire people. Plenty of anime can boast that theme. What is it then? The sheer level of epicness is what a majority of fans harp on about, XXX light-years-tall robots etc etc, but that's not what made it my favourite anime. It's the execution of the themes and the way it ties things together that did it for me.
Anyone can see it's all about humans under stress, and the portrayal of heroes overcoming insurmountable odds - easily relatable to for the modern teenager (lol). The worn-out stereotype of becoming a man through trials is likely the key theme to all of it, and the portrayal is basically what I loved about the anime. Following Shimon's development, with his co-existence alongside Kamina thrown in - that's the thing that made it great for me: I doubt it's the best such example of such development, but I haven't seen anything to rival it. This particular theme is enforced to a huge degree by the level of reliance Shimon has on Kamina, and makes it all the more inspiring that he can go from digging holes meekly to the badass
saviour of the universe
, all while maintaining his sense of identity as a humble digger. The fact that he can surpass the man he so looked up to and yet still hold that same respect for the man he did from the beginning (I've watched the climax a few times, and there are plenty of symbols for it, almost like a literary work of sorts, though of course not as motif-like or subtle). Introducing 'random' elements is hardly anything odd, and if you'd like you can liken it to life throwing random events at you out of nowhere. Maybe I'm being overly interpretive, but the element of sacrifice makes the world of Gurren Lagann that much more relatable, and the resulting
triumph all the more bittersweet
.
You have to go in without any huge expectations - enjoy the show at your pace, not at the internet's GAR-fueled pace, and you'll find plenty of things to like about it.
Even if that didn't give you reason to like Gurren Lagann, just writing it made me feel a lot better about life. There, I'm not just a mindless fanboy who wants to be Kamina.

In no way did I not like TTGL, I think I gave it an 8 or a 9 on my MAL.
To be honest, after reading your post I am only able to relate it to the first part of the series which I LOVE! The sacrifices of the last battle became less and less meaningful because
they all did it one after the other.
You see someone's sacrifice and you are like "damn that was really noble!"
then you see it again...and again...and again...and it becomes less valuable, and in the end completely nullifies the original sacrifice
leaving only a sour taste in my mouth.
Simon's growth to me actually feels a little hollow to me. He doesn't really turn into a man like Kamina, instead he becomes a carbon copy of Kamina, which kinda upsets me. What happened to the Simon that I had grown to love from the first arc? How did the
7 years
turn him into Kamina instead of a man like Kamina. Simon's traits and personality to me felt completely thrown out the window and was rehashed as Kamina 2.0.
Your post also bought up another instance that pissed me off.
At the end Simon ends up being a wandering vagrant? He just ****ing saved the world and his only reward was a dead Nia and wandering around the world for the rest of his days? Come on Gainax...really?
I guess my real question should have been, what about the second arc is good? Like the second arc is honestly my only real gripe with the series.
Veritas is some great manwha, though manwha is as a whole very underexposes. Unbalancex2, Freezing are two examples of manwha artists catering to Japanese tastes, though.
finally people talk about black lagoon, the manga is amazing
i wish the author would go out of hiatus but during his panel someone asked when is he going back to it and his response was "whenever i feel like it." LOL
afterwards, the ova was screened and it was so cash
btw unbalancex2 was originally korean and made to cater the korean community
that's why the main protagonist is so badass, it just got popular in japan and was serialized there too

As this thread seems to be more active, and also seems like nobody (besides JigglyZelda003) is gonna answear this question I made in the Bleach thread...
Should I bother in start reading the manga from where the anime is up to atm?

Well, asianaussie contacted me, and was totally willing and able to update the OP. And judging by his posts in the thread, I think he'd be good at it.
But honestly I have a weird sentimental attachment to this thread, so I am going to be a ******* and just do it myself. I already told asianaussie this over PM. I wouldn't have done anything if aa's PM hadn't spurred me to action, but now that it has I figure I better just get to work. He definitely gets the credit for getting me off my *** on this.
So far, I definitely plan on adding Dennou Coil, Baccano!, Mushishi, Hourou Musuko, Vinland Saga, Ikigami, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Sexy Voice and Robo, and Teppu to the list. There's a bunch more I'm considering adding, but haven't decided on yet. If you guys have any recommendations or anything, I will actually see them now. I plan to comb over the last ten or so pages of the thread for recommendations, too. I won't add any series that I'm not at least somewhat familiar with to the main list, but the Other Recommendations list could use some updating too.
I intend to alphabetize the list and probably make a table of contents listing all the series in a collapse tag. I'm not sure if there's any other format changes I should make. I'm not inclined to color code anything, because I think that the sections are labeled clearly enough anyway. If there's general support for it, though, I'd do it. I'd take suggestions for other format changes too.
Anyhow, my apologies to everyone for not updating for so long, and to asianaussie for stealing his thunder. I figure I should have this thing fully updated within a week, and I intend to keep up with the topic after that.
It'd be good if you Place them in a ranking way instead of alphabetically IMO, so that new introduced pol to the manga/anime world that get into here would know where to start looking at, which anime/manga focus their attention on.
