How does pools work, exactly?

a preliminary elimination round

groups of players between 4-8 (depending on attendance) play against each other in a round robin format

pools are designed to reduce large amounts of people to fit a smaller bracket (usually 32 or 64 man)

they are also good for large tournaments where everybody can get a placing

the highest set wins make it out (the number of people that qualify is determined by the TO and is based on the size of the pools)

so

shizwiz

are a pool

typically we would have top 2 make it out of this pool (top 1 is stupid and rarely happens)

so if u lose 2 sets u automatically dont make it out, consequently 2 sets won would guarantee you a spot out

the possible scores would be

3-0 (shiz)
2-1 (colbol)
1-2 (me)
0-3 (Nihongo-ookami) lol get *****

with a small pool like this, ties can't happen...but with bigger pools we can see ties

for instance let us add three more to our pool

6-0 (mango)
5-1 (shiz)
3-3(colbol)
3-3 (frames)
2-4 (Nihongo-ookami)
1-5 (mew2king)
0-6 (nubdvs)

so as u can see me and colin are tied and this is a critical spot too; for a 7 man pool they could do top 3 or top 4 depending on how the TO wants to do it...so its very important that we get this figured out

typically TO's will have several different options at this point depending on how they wanna do pools they can

look at our match - how did colbol and i do against each other? if he beat me then he advances (typically this is the most popular way for 2-way ties, however 3 and 4 way ties can be more complicated)

look at match wins - each set that we win represents 3 matches that could have been played so we look at the records for those matches...if my sets are all 2-1 and colins sets are 2-0 then he advances because he has a better record

so we each won 3 sets and lost 3 sets
