Now, you are all about to get very jealous. During our 80-minute lunch break, on thursdays, my school has a "Smash Club". That's right. Brawl. Now, I was playing the last singles match of the day against this guy ANDY, who is one of the best at school. Battlefield, 3 stock. I was Sonic, he was Marth. I got the first kill in with a (h)edgehog, which Marth is very suceptable to. He got in the next to kills, but I caught up. I had about 110%, he had about 124%. he tried to ledgehog me as I fell from a fumbled atempt at a Bair stage spike. I almost won, but Sprung instead of HAing, and forgot to aerial during the spring, so I just barely didn't make it. However, both times I did kill him, it was due to (h)edgehogging. Giving Sonic's skill at (h)edgehogging, and Marth's poor vertical recovery, i think Sonic vs. Marth may well be in Sonic's favor.

While I appreciate the input, I don't see how totally relavant it may be. Although your personal experiences do contribute greatly to your opinions on a match-up, this one face-off between you and andy at your school really dictates the odds in the overall match-up. Also, you speak of only one advantage Sonic has, edgehogging. While its very true Sonic can edgehog Marth to his doom, it simply isn't the most reliable method and Marth has his own advantages over Sonic, such as aerial prowess and killing ability. Also, the fact that you guys played this match on battlefield makes me question the choices Andy made. Battlefield's blastlines ae pretty close to the the main platform, so I don't see why his Marth couldn't have recovered without having to grab onto the ledge, by simple DI towards the stage, and using UpB without having to sweetspot the ledge.

Appreciate the contribution, but you're going to need more than that if you want to argue this match-up in Sonics favor. (A match-up by the way, that I personally actually find even or only slightly in marths advantage).

This.
Well, except the neutral bit. From Marth in the tier list upwards, I believe his only neutrals are Dedede and Falco, maybe even ROB (maybe not though)

Point still stands though, winning one match doesn't make it in Sonic's favour.

Marth's poor vertical recovery? You must be joking. It's a fact that Dolphin Slash's nature can cause it to be edgehogged quite often, but the word "poor" is out of the question.

Perhaps poor was the wrong word, yes; a more appropriate word would be gimpable. But sonic is an excellent gimper, and marth's dolphin slash is very easily gimped. I just wanted to put out the concept of some people trying sonic vs. marth and seeing how it goes using a gimpy playstyle.

Eh, IMO as far as gimping, Sonic's at a loss vs Marth on the off stage game slightly. As far as edgehogging, Marth isn't as susceptible to instant hugging as you may think. In some cases he can stall for a second with Double Jump + Dancing Blade.

Shadowlink is funny.
All for the lulz.

@roy:
Oh...
Rob is 55:45 ROB. I originally thought 60:40 but from my experience and from what i have heard Sonic can be a bit of an annoyance. mainly after Overswarm's comment on the matchup as well.

DDD: Not sure. I feel its neutral but it is certainly possible for the fat penguin to have the advantage.

Falco: Falco has the advantage. Duh

Rob and DDD are 60:40 Marth.
Against falco its probably neutral.
ROB and Marth are 50/50

DDD and Marth are 50/50

Falco and Marth is probably 55/45 Marth....

**** 80 min lunch break I want that :(

Players that are from the boards are usually Top Class compared to the non board players, my friend(who mains fox) only uses F-Smash and Fire Fox, and only that, no Dash, no nothing, only Jumps(not sure about this, F-Smash and FireFox, I beat him(by punishing the FireFox, which he aims on me(in ground)and then CG) and he still claims, "you're slightly better than me, but I'm better than you in melee" and I 3 stocked him, I'd probably do that in Melee aswell, also this guy's cousins, brother, dog, whatever either second or main Pikachu, and he also uses the annoying, Thunder, Down Smash spam, which almost beat my Wolf(due to the stage being Corneria, Thunder kills like ****, and I'm not used to the stage), until I played defense.

EDIT: Isn't the Sonic/Falco matchup 60/40 Falco, it said in Slash's Falco guide its 70/30 Falco...

ya dude, good players dont need top tier to win. i know, sounds crazy.

uh... falco really isnt that bad... idk why everyone says he ***** so hard. he dies really low.

he is like mk with bad recovery, and not as good priority. falcos main edvantages are laser spam, and spikes

but.... sonic has no issues wiht laser spam, and none with spikes either... i'd say if anything the matchup is 50/50.

ok shy guys post is currently blowing my mind right now

what are you even talking about lol
To shorten my post, I was saying that Smashers that go to the boards(this site) are usually better than the ones that don't, and then they see as M2K to them....

I'd have really enjoyed it if El and Tenki just ended up talking about this match up.

At this point Tenki is probably the most knoweldgable Sonic and El is pretty much the go to guy for Marth info.

I'd have to say that this match up almost definatly goes to Marth. The only thing Sonic has going for him is that he is one of the few characters that can actually punish the tiny bits of lag Marth has. I think Meta/Sheik/Sonic are the only really effective punishers of a SH Double Fair... but I'm probably very wrong about that.

He has terrible horizontal recovery, and a well spaced fsmash on your part will make him regret virtually everything. Get him off the stage, then dair or HA attack him to get him further out. Drop a spring, grab the edge, gg. Whatever.

Marth is light, and dies easily. This match-up has always been easy for me.

EDIT: Learn to powershield. It seriously makes everything ever unsafe v Sonic. Ever.
