Alright everyone, the moment you've all been waiting for.

To get things started, we will be having 6 Prelim matchups. I've previously stated that debates will start on July 9th. I'm going to change this to July 3rd- July 9th. With judging taking place over that weekend, or when the debates are over. The reason, this tournament was larger than i expected, and so we need to get things going. If you are one of the Pre-lim matches and you can't debate till the 9th. I can make an exception. This will be the place to talk about DWYP as well. Make sure you're not posting topics in the DWYP subsection, anyone who posts a topic in here without permission from one of the mods, will be given a warning, and if it happens again, you will be booted from the contest.

Now on to judging.

You'll be judged on a few things. First off, each judge will give some personal comments to each debate for both contestants. They might compliment you on what you did right, as well as give you some constructive criticism on what you could improve on. Each judge will give a letter grade, and say who they thought won the debate. They will be judging on how well you used sources, if the sources are reliable. They will also be judging on how well you present your side. Don't just list your side, but paint a picture with it. Make it to where you're drawing someone into your side. Most of all, don't be jumping around too much, stay with your topic. I also forgot a huge rule. No editing posts, this makes it very hard for the other debater if you're changing what you've said. From here on out, you will get a warning for editing, and after that. You will lose. You can double post in DWYP, so don't worry about it.

So now on to the match-ups.

First off, here is how DWYP will work. You will be given these set of debates. You and your partner, will decide on which topic they wish to debate, once chosen, you will PM myself with your choice, and who is the affirmative for the debate. (Such as Gay's should have the right to Gay Marriage, that' an affirmative) I will post the topic, and the affirmative will beging the debate.

So here are the topics, and below them are the Pre-Lim Match ups. The 6 winners of these will move on to the main 32 man bracket.

Debate Topics:
War
Iraqi Stability as Affected by the War in Iraq
Was the US Right in going to Iraq?
Was the execution of Saddam Hussein just?
Should Canada Pack Up and Go Home?
Was Operation Iraqi Freedom a Success?
Should the U.S. invade Iran?
Should the U.S. pull out of Iraq?

Government
Should the government continue welfare, public school, social security, and Medicare?
Is the Constitution too flexible?
Electoral College vs One Person, One Vote
Has Big Business turned the US to Big Government -Regulations, Restrictions, etc.
What political party America needs right now?
Are Tax Rebates helping the economy?
Do Tax Cuts for the Rich help the economy?
Has the government become corrupt?
Who should be the next president, McCain or Obama?

Religion
Evolution vs. Creationism
Should there be teacher led prayer in Schools?
Should there be prayer in schools period?
Which religion should the US be considered?
Bible vs History

Social Issues
Immigration: Should US have Open Borders
Gay marriage: Should it be Legal
Genetic Engineering: For or Against (Cloning Included)
Capital Punishment: For or Against
Same-Sex Parent Adoption
Should Marijuana be legal?
Should there be smoking bans?
Pro-Life vs Pro-Choice

Environment
Is Global Warming a Serious Threat?
Should the U.S. begin to focus more on different forms of fueling than oil?
Should the U.S. drill in Alaska?

If you can't seriously find one topic out of all these topics that you differ on, come up with your own, but PM me first to make sure.

And here are the matchups

Skylerocon vs Airgemini
Stroupes vs Byronman
Mr. Lombardi vs SSBbo
BFDD vs GhostAnime

Everyone else, you have made the main draw, good luck everyone, and Debate with your POWER.

Once the prelims are done, will the rest of us find out who our partners are?

Also, this is gonna be hella fun.

Can you and your partner only pick a topic no other pair is doing, or can you simply choose whatever? Do the judges decide when the debate is over? Also, how much time will we have for preparatory research?

We can have as many of the same debate as we want. I might start to get picky if we have more than 5 of the same one, but I don't see that as a problem with all the topics. For the most part, debates will go the full week, if the judges feel the debate isn't going anywhere, we'll give a warning that if the debaters can't bring up new points, the debate will end, and will be judged. As for prep for sources. You can start as soon as you and your partner have decided on a topic.

Just a reminder to all the Prelims, thank you for checking in, but be sure to contact your opponent some how. Most of themposted a contact in the sign up thread, so check there, and if all else fails, you can use PMs.

One rule I feel the need to declare now: Wikipedia is banned as a source.

Simply put, there is a category on reliability of sources, and Wikipedia is not reliable. You can use it as a starting point, definitely, but it should not be your source at all. Wikipedia is great because it footnotes everything. Follow the footnotes to the actual site, and make that your source.

Because I am new to the Debate Hall, wasn't I supposed to be in the Prelims? I didn't see myself in the match ups, so I'm just curious.

Won't there be a problem with multiple pairs of people having the same topic, because they could look at the others' debates and get ideas from them?

In the first DWYP, we had multiple topics of the same thing, and it worked out alright. Since people will have to be citing sources for their side, it will be obvious if a certain side is just stealing from another debate if their sources are the same.

I'm looking forward to this hopefully I'm available for it since I'm supposed to go on vacation this weekend. Don't know if I'll have access to an Internet connection or not.

Do I need to check-in yet? If so, here I am!

Also, this is to the people I end up going against in the bracket: I'm basically refusing to debate anything religion related. I hate debating about religion. Sorry.

Hey everyone, checking in is for the Prelimmers, and those checking in NEED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THEIR OPPENENTS AND PM SO YOU CAN START. We need 3 more up, so Im looking at you

Mr. Lombardi vs SSBbo
BFDD vs GhostAnime
MetaKnight63 vs BengalsRZ

I won't be here for most of the day, so if you guys want to PM CK or someone else that would be great. Im sure CK would take 10 mins of his time to get those rollnig. If no one can do it, I'll allow you to post the thread, but be sure it follows the way I set the other 2 up.

EDIT: I also forgot a huge rule. No editing posts, this makes it very hard for the other debater if you're changing what you've said. From here on out, you will get a warning for editing, and after that. You will lose.

I will say the religious topics are really good ones.
Very true. I can't wait for the regular brackets.

Depending on who you're up against, certain people could probably go back to the God thread and just CTRL-F + copypasta the majority of their arguments without actually sparing any effort to type up new ones. :D

Alright guys, I'm extending the deadline for debates till thursday. For all of you slackers who haven't started.

For the rest of the round, you don't have to PM me to get the topic up, just post it yourself, but make sure the affirmative starts.

So by the end of thursday, the debates are done. If there are debates that aren't finished, The person who made an attempt to contact their opponent will advance.
