Hot take: while I do agree with Max that it would be awesome to see that... I'm not so sure Sakurai would like it.

You gotta remember that while Sakurai is a big FG nut and an arcade kid, his design philosophy is very much not the same as what you'd expect (or maybe even want) when developing a traditional fighting game.

In fact, an arcade experience where he completely trashed a newbie player at KoF is pretty much one of the things he credits for wanting to make Smash more accessible. So if Sakurai ever went for a traditional fighter, I'm not sure it would be something like CvS. In fact, it's arguably more likely he'd want to develop another beginner-friendly fighter.
So Sakurai will take over developing Play Station All-Stars to finally give Smash some competition for a casual crossover fighter.

If we do happen to get more echos. I find Octoling to be among the most likely.
Shadow, Impa, Dixie, and Tom Nook are others I could conceivably see if they do an echo pass or something.

It's kind of hard to imagine anyone else at Nintendo wanting to follow up Uprising. Kid Icarus Uprising is so unique in that it feels like both a revival and a swan song for the Kid Icarus series. The game not only has incredibly unique gameplay and a ton of content (unique weapons, a trophy mode, online, the AR card thing), but it's story is also staggeringly long. And it's not like it drags out one plot for 25 chapters. Sakurai took like seven unique story ideas and put them all in one game. Uprising goes hard. It's difficult to picture anyone, even Sakurai, trying to surpass what Uprising did.

Agreed. I've been expecting them to be revealed any minute now since E3 2018.

And I kinda wish Melee had more time because, if I were Sakurai, I would've experimented just a teeny bit more and given Gandondorf and Falco unique movesets instead of adding Dr. Mario, Pichu, Young Link and Roy.
Falco is hype af as is, though, and Young Link isn't bad either, especially as played by Axe. I would probably give Falco his sniper rifle and more avian moves or physics, but not if it would ruin the cool **** he can do now.
Especially with the roster being arranged in the order of every character’s debut. Lucina being placed on the roster next to Marth instead of Robin (the character she literally shared a trailer with) is the most mildly infuriating thing ever.
Players should be able to arrange the roster however they want. I bet that can be modded.

Who would take over Smash if Sakurai is not at the helm of director anymore?

Honestly that would be a really neat feature. It'd also be funny to see all the memes of the "perfect roster" with characters like Mario missing. At least, it'd be funny until people stop joking and it just becomes a flame war.

I would personally love that. Being arranged by series always made sense to me. Mario characters in the beginning, third party characters at the end. That’s the way I like it.

I have no idea. All I know is that they would need to find someone. Smash is too much of a staple at this point. Smash is the entire reason the Wii U was able to survive any longer than two years. I had three friends who owned Wii U’s solely as a “Smash machine.”

Honestly though, Sakurai’s built such a good foundation that there has to be a few developers on his team that could competently take over. Heck, if they wanted to, they could just keep updating Ulimate for the next decade. So long as they’re adding new characters and stages, people will be happy.

The Kirby series current director, Shinya Kumazaki would be great. He's given the Kirby series lots of fan service and I think he could do well with Smash Bros.

I don't see Shadow since he's an echo.
You all think he made a mistake and he replies with "Nah. I meant what I said!" and later we get a Shadow echo fighter.

Nah, the TV screen emits light, so it would have to be off for that to be the case, but then the rest of the game wouldn't work.

I know I only got the Switch because of Smash Ultimate, and it's the only 1st party title I currently have.

As for the Developers, Besides Sakurai and his Wife, Most of the employees are from Namco, with some possible exceptions. At this point if Sakurai Retires, Namco might take over completely, with Perhaps Harada at the helm or something like that.

And I agree with a Smash that's built for Updates. I don't think Ultimate is that game, but they might make another Upgraded Port of Ultimate or new game entirely that is focused on adding content for decades and such

I honestly hate the way the characters are arranged on the CSS. It's just confusing, especially so for players who aren't huge Smash nerds so they don't know the order the characters were added in (and then, that gets messed up when echoes are next to the originals). If I had to guess, they probably did it that way so that the DLC characters would be less awkwardly-placed (we would have all Mario characters at the beginning, and then Piranha Plant way towards the bottom) but I'd honestly prefer that because you'd just be able to think, "DLC, so somewhere in the bottom two rows" and be able to find the other Mario characters far easier. I wish we at least had a few more options for how we'd like to organize the roster beyond "echoes stacked or unstacked" (which, imo is kind of a crappy option because that makes the echo fighters difficult to find)

I'm afraid so. Shadow.exe grabbed them through the TV.

But don't worry, Smash Puppy will appear in the next spirit event and we can free them.
I feel like once a .EXE grabs you, your Soul/Spirit wouldn't be that easy to free. I imagine if Smash puppy was in Next Spirit event, we also get Shadow.EXE Boss fight, which would be cool since it shows new bosses are being added

Whoops brainfart. Meant to say assist.
If it makes you feel any better. You're probably right that he wouldn't be in an echo pass because of the assist trophy

Because the Assist trophy might actually show that Shadow was planned as his own character instead... but that's just a theory

A game theory, thanks for watching

anyway, if we did get an echoes pass, kinda want Kasumi as a Joker echo

Doesn't she have a Rapier though? That's gonna be hard to fit into Joker's Current moveset, also I thought the theory with Kasumi was that she was planned as an echo or alt, but scrapped because it would be unfeasible to echofy her

Though I don't know much about her, so I'm not sure

Honestly I could see that working. Ever since he took the helm, Kirby's brought in lots of callbacks and continuity, culminating in a literal god of evil who is also Kirby himself or his dad or something. With a big crossover like Smash, Kumazaki's style would fit perfectly.

I’d love a Joker echo, but it’s kind of hard to picture any character and persona that could replicate Joker and Arsene. Kasumi, Crow, or Yu seem like the best fits, but they would still have to make Cendrillon, Robinhood, or Izanagi fit over Arsene. I’m not sure if an echo would be worth all that trouble.

Y'know it's funny. I'm one of those who fully believes that assist trophies can't be upgraded to playable characters. I'm also somewhat of a general hater of the Sonic franchise in general. But I feel like in the hypothetical scenario that we do get an echo pass, then Shadow will make the cut.

The main reason I feel like assists won't become playable, is that from a marketing perspective, people like new and exciting things. So if they're going to expend the effort to make a full new character, it's not going to be simply re-using assets from an assist and upgrading it, which might make some people feel cheated for paying full price of a character.

An echo DLC would probably be priced cheaper than a full character. Shadow also kind of hits that sweet spot of being hugely popular while also being a relatively easy concept to work onto an echo, just paint sonic black, give him some new run animation and possibly replace his down B with something like Bayonetta's.

Hm

maybe Echoes could be individual dlc?

and they wouldn’t come with a stage but would come with music?
For sure they wouldn't make new stages for echos. More music is always a good thing, but most the popular echo suggestions that people toss around are of characters from franchises who already have a pretty decent music selection in Smash. If echo DLC ever became a thing, I'd probably predict that they'd come alone without a music or stage.

Do you really think people will care outside of the AT apologist bubble when fighters always have a lot more resources put into them? An AT is lucky to even have more than 3 moves while fighters have at least 23.

Most people wouldn't care. But some might, and at the end of the day Nintendo still has tons of options for Smash candidates so why go with the option where there's even a possible issue.

I definitely wouldn't mind being proven wrong on this. There's tons of assist trophies I'd love to play as like Alucard, Zero, Yuri, Skull Kid, and Ashley. But I just don't see it.

SOME might. Just like some might care that Byleth is an 8th Fire Emblem character instead of from a new franchise.

Plus you're not considering that since this is DLC, new mechanics beyond at least 20 more new moves will be added, meaning only the biggest AT apologists will act like this is literally just the AT copypasted onto the fighter roster.

Having an assist promoted to DLC would be a quite interesting concept. An assist trophy like Knuckles does have some moves done and probably wouldn't take as much time to be finished than a full original fighter. But i personally wouldn't count on it, there's a reason for why they're assist trophies at first place.

Any Smash pick will come with some amount of controversy. But I feel there's a distinction between people being dissatisfied with a certain pick because they dislike a character or franchise from people being dissatisfied because they are getting less than what they pay for. I know that reasoning is dumb, and any character they produce would be well worth the money, but there you have it.

But they only barely are getting less than what they pay for. Again, ATs only have a fraction of the moves that fighters have, let alone gimmicky DLC ones.

Furthermore, allow me to list all the internet tantrums that happened when Android 17 became a DLC fighter in FighterZ despite his presence in 18's moveset:

I read somewhere that the code for Royal supposedly indicated that Kasumi shared Joker's dagger and gun at some point in development, although I'm not entirely sure on the validity of that claim and haven't found the code for myself.

Smash fans tend to get more volatile and emotionally involved than fans of other fighting game franchises, I feel. At the very least, the game's huge and vocal playerbase makes it seem that way sometimes. (The fact that Chrom still exists as part of Robin's final smash despite being a playable character triggers me to no end, you have no idea.)

For the record, I never implied it would be a problem. I just said that that sentiment might exist, and Nintendo might be wary of its existence and try to avoid it by going for one of its many many other good options.
